A large meteorite measuring between one and several meters in diameter broke up and fell over Europe

There are numerous reports of a large fireball flying over Western Europe yesterday, March 8, at around 9 p.m. Moscow time. The flight was accompanied by flashes and sound effects and was captured by numerous stationary cameras and eyewitnesses' mobile phones.

The object moved from southwest to northeast and was visible in the sky over Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Based on the photos received, the brightness of the fireball near the epicenter can be estimated at a magnitude of minus 15 to minus 20, which is hundreds of times brighter than the full moon. Based on the video, the size of the meteorite ranges from one to several (2-3) meters. The rock initially entered the Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of about 80 kilometers and was observed for approximately 10 seconds. At an altitude of 40 to 20 km, the body actively broke up into fragments in the area of the cities of Koblenz and Frankfurt am Main (Germany), accompanied by bright flashes. In Koblenz, one of the fragments, several centimeters in size, pierced the roof of a residential building. Reports of falling fragments also came from other regions of Germany, confirming that the object broke into many small pieces and that some of the debris continued to move after the breakup.

The event evokes many associations with the observation of a similar fireball on October 27, 2025, which flew north of Moscow over the territory of the Vologda, Yaroslavl, Tver, and Novgorod regions, and was also captured on numerous stationary cameras and video recorders, which ultimately made it possible to determine its trajectory and the center of the debris scatter with good accuracy. These are about the same reasons why the Chelyabinsk meteorite, which was also approaching from the daytime sky, was not detected in advance.

The initial size of the fallen meteorite, according to preliminary estimates by the European Space Agency, is several meters. The size of the asteroid 2026 EM, which missed the planet, was estimated to be about 2 meters. Currently, the asteroid has been lost due to its small size and is no longer observed.

The meteorite observed at night flew in the Black Sea about 100 km south of the Crimean Bridge.

Preliminary calculated information has been released on the trajectory and nature of the bright bolide observed last night near the Black Sea coast. Based on the current data, the object's movement was completely above water. The object (meteorite) entered the Earth's atmosphere at approximately 22:35 Moscow time (to be further clarified) in the area of the central water area of the Black Sea, approximately 100-150 km south of the Crimean Bridge. The cameras located on the transport hub, if they have the appropriate spatial orientation, should have recorded the moment of the body's appearance and the entire trajectory of its flight.

The bolide was moving in a northwesterly direction towards the Crimean Peninsula and was observed for about 4 seconds. During this time, the body traveled a distance of 100 to 200 km, which completely excludes its man-made origin. The corresponding speeds in the range from 25 to 50 km/s are available only to objects of cosmic nature. The meteorite is not previously associated with any known large meteor shower and is a small stone that accidentally encountered the Earth — one of those that massively fill the Solar system. On a global scale, as already reported, the frequency of such events ranges from 1 to several episodes per day.

Reports of meteorite sightings from fairly remote locations, in particular in Rostov-on-Don, located almost 500 km from the event site, are associated with the high altitude at which high—speed fireballs glow - from 70 to 100 km. This, combined with the high brightness of the glow and the dark background of the night sky, makes it possible to observe such bodies from very long distances, which sometimes creates the illusion of a body flying in close proximity to the observer.

The solar system asteroid will make its closest approach to Earth at 11:27 p.m. EDT on March 12 (0327 GMT on March 13), when it will pass 197,466 miles (317,791 kilometers) from the southern hemisphere.

At the point of closest approach NASA estimates that the 32-72 foot-wide (10-22 meters) asteroid — designated 2026 EG1 — will be travelling at a blistering 21,513 miles per hour (34,621 kilometers per hour) relative to Earth and will swiftly pass us by, after performing a distant flyby of the moon.

Initial observations following its discovery on March 8 reveal that 2026 EG1 follows a 655-day elliptical orbit around the sun, during which it ranges from an innermost point within Earth's orbit to well beyond the path of Mars.

2026 EG1's next closest planetary approach won't take place until Sept. 13, 2186, when it will pass approximately 7.5 million miles (12.1 million km) from the surface of Mars. The wandering asteroid is just one of over 41,000 near-Earth asteroids currently being tracked by NASA and its partners — a figure that will likely rise significantly thanks to the efforts of the Vera Rubin Observatory, which has already discovered 2,000 hitherto unknown solar system bodies with its initial dataset.
