need help - nerve pain - neck

Thanks Stevie,

Interesting information. While I did not have any neck adjustments, both the massage and acupuncture included the neck.

After your post, I read up on effects of stimulating the vestibular nerve which can result in all sorts of interesting effects.
Learning is most certainly fun.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Gonzo

Hi Gonzo,

I was thinking about your neck pain and remembered I have a posture pump which I use occasionally to relieve neck pain. Because I like to paint with watercolors I am often in a hunched position for extended periods of time which causes my neck to become very sore. My chiropractor recommended I use a posture pump and it actually relieves my neck pain immediately! I don't know if it would help in your case, but I want to mention it to you just in case it could. Of course, I would recommend consulting a doctor before considering using one.

I bought mine for about $80 on eBay.

Here is the company's website:

Hi Scarlet,

Thanks for the info. Quite an interesting device. It reminds me of how the other day at a doctor's appointment, the nurse was taking my blood pressure with those newer cuffs that automatically inflate and I remarked how wonderful it would feel on my legs when the nerve pain is bugging me.

My current methods of either heating pads wrapped around each leg, fastened with a bandana or having my dog lay across them is nice, but the even pressure of the BP cuff would probably feel even nicer and doesn't bark and kick its legs in the midst of a doggie-chasing-a-squirrel-type dream.

Thanks again,
Gonzo

Hi Stevie,

Thanks for thinking about me. I am doing much better. After a few weeks of massage and acupuncture I have almost complete range of motion in my neck and am spasm free in my neck, upper back and shoulders.

We've hit hard times financially, so I won't be able to order the DMSO for a while.

The last week however, has been such an emotional roller coaster putting significant pressure on my relationship with my partner.

She has been seeing both a counselor and a psychiatrist since she had her breakdown a little while ago and I finally admitted I needed support as well. So today we met with her counselor to help us with some of the issues we are facing and to see if he could get me a counselor as well.

Apparently, since I went off anti-depressants several months ago, I have not been the most pleasant person to be with, which has cause undue additional stress for her. I had noticed I had become increasingly frustrated with relatively minor things. Although such things are part of my step-son's long pattern of irresponsibility and her enabling, my reactions to them are out of proportion and getting worse.

As well, I am having difficulty keeping up at work and having to take that week off when my neck problems started really added to the stress.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out my neck problems are related to stress as well as the more symbolic body language explanations. I certainly have my work cut out for me, Work wise.

I really appreciate the interest and concern.

Gonzo

I'm glad you are feeling a little better Gonzo!

Also in the back of my mind, I was wondering if a symbolic 'pain in the neck' would come up (step-son?). I think having a counselor for yourself might be a great help.

If you have any extra flowerpots laying around, I remember a session when that seems to be a good help for stress relief!

Hi Gonzo. On my 16th birthday, my 'best friend' got me into a car accident. The paramedics had to put leg-length inflatable bags or cuffs of some sort on both of my legs and then inflate them before transporting me to the hospital. So I know someone manufactures them.

Do you know anyone in the [emergency] medical field that could be instrumental in helping you acquire something like that to try it as an experiment?

Hi Dawn, yes thanks for the reminder about the flower pots. I currently only have the cheap plastic ones that plants often come in, but I'm sure I could find a worthy substitute.

Thanks,
Gonzo

Good to hear that you are on the mend. Sorry to hear about your other problems, I guess you are getting a stack of lifes opportunities for learning and growth in advance .

Have you ever looked at Feldenkrais? Dont know if it will help you,I have found some of his exercises usefull for getting to know my body and its stress patterns. theres is a link here , you can find many more in google : http://www.ehow.com/how_2074528_ease-stress-feldenkrais.html. Can I suggest though that if you are going to try anything out that maybe you run them past your therapists to ensure they are not going to work against your therapists treatments, as some seem to need tensions need resolved piece by piece.

One explanation of the mind/emotion/body reaction I read to stress went like this. Stressful life situation -> emotion ->tension. Later the life situtation is resolved but because during it we have suppressed breathing and tensed our mucles we have become a little less sensitive to tension and dont fully let go, so the next time something happens a little more tension is added. and if you think about filling a bath tub then not fully emptying it then there will come a time when it cant hold anymore water and will start spilling over. maybe not the best analogy but it does paint a picture.

All the best

Hi Gonzo,

I have bought one gallon of DMSO and with that quantity, i will have that product for many years.

So if you like, I could send you freely something like 1 liter.

If you are interested, just send me your address by pm.

Update:
For the last week and a bit I have been trying the DMSO generously shared by Gandalf as a topical treatment with interesting results which I will be logging in the thread DMSO - Dimethylsulphoxide (http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=17014.0) a little later on.

The long and short of it is that it has benefited my neck pain, my shoulder pain (which I believe to be neuropathic) as well as reducing the nagging referred pain in my legs from L4/5 and L5/S1 injuries.

Thanks to all for their thoughts and support,

Gonzo

By the way, Stevie, I wanted to thank you for the link to e-how's info on Feldenkrais. This is really fascinating and I certainly will be seeing how I can try to integrate it into my approaches.

Thanks,
Gonzo

Glad you found it of interest Gonzo, Moshe was very influenced by Gurdjieff.

"...the degree of awareness differs greatly between different individuals, far more than the relative distribution of other faculties. Further, there are also great periodic variations in the individual's awareness and its value relative to other aspects of his personality. There may be a low point at which awareness may disappear momentarily or for a period. More rarely there may be a high point at which there is a harmonious unity, with all man's faculties fused into a single whole." In those moments one, "...grasps that his small world and the great world around are but one and that in this unity he is no longer alone." Moshe Feldenkrais from Awareness Through Movement.
