New Forum layout April 2018

There are a couple of keyboard shortcuts / hotkeys.
For example keys 1, 2, 3.. trigger the main navigation items Home, Forums, What's New, etc..
m, comma, dot, pipe (M , . |) trigger the Usermenu, Inbox, Alerts and Search items, but i don't get the pipe/search working with my keyboard layout.
They don't work though, if the editing component is active/focused, which has other shortcuts, like Cntrl+B for bold, etc.

That's interesting mrtn. Did you find this by accident? On iMAC and Safari the number 2 does not do anything. The pipe doesn't go to search for me either. The other keys seem to do as you found. For keyboard shortcut guys this might be useful (even me:-)).

Yes, by accident, probably pressed 1 instead of ESC, wondering about the "redirect" to the front page then.
Apart from some xenForo community forum posts (XF 2.0, XF 1.5) i could not find a real documentation about this. But viewing the page source (cntrl+u in Firefox) and searching for "data-xf-key" seems to show up some of them. For Search it's actually slash (/), but does not work here either. The ones in the editor are shown in the toolbar tooltips.

Since the Forum Search Results only show the first part of matching posts instead of the matching part itself, you don't always see the actual context of the phrase and you have to click the result and search there again. So I tested how well searching via google works:

You can search via Google the phrase 'fizzled' in only the thread 'session-16-july-2009' using the 'site:' keyword:
fizzled site:https://cassiopaea.org/forum/threads/session-16-july-2009.12993

Make sure you don't have a page part in the URL, the following won't find the previous result:
fizzled site:https://cassiopaea.org/forum/threads/session-16-july-2009.12993/page-13

Searching in Subforums doesn't work:
fizzled site:https://cassiopaea.org/forum/boards/the-cassiopaean-experiment.48/

Google might give far less results (3) than searching via the Forum (18). I don't know if this is because Google hasn't crawled all the thread pages and doesn't find all matches, or if there are simply just 3 matching pages in that thread vs 18 matching posts as shown by the Forum Search:
tryptophan site:https://cassiopaea.org/forum/threads/iodine-and-potassium-iodide.13371
(P.S. I think it's the former one, Google just doesn't find/show all occurrences)

You can also search in the whole forum instead of a specific thread:
dionysius site:https://cassiopaea.org/forum

So it's quirky but might be useful in some cases as an additional way to find something.

Today I encountered something weird or at least inexplicable to me.

Yesterday at 7:39 PM I answered to a post of whitecoast . Unbeknownst to me, whitecoast liked the answer but didn't post a written reply.

Today I skimmed through the latest activity pages and didn't find any reply of whitecoast. So I opened the topic again to find out if there was any reaction at all and discovered the like beneath my answer.

Thinking I must have missed his like on the latest activity pages I checked the time stamp of the like (8:49 PM) and went back to search for it.

It's NOT THERE !!!

Would this be a random quirk or is something 'broken' ?

I was wondering if it is intentional that The Swamp area is now visible to members with less than 50 posts? I noticed members with less than 10 post browsing it so I thought I'd run it past you :-)

Yeah. I changed it so that it's not visible to guests, but registered members can see it.

It gets kind of painful having all these specialized permissions for various boards.

Makes sense, thank you for clarifying Scottie :-)

Wow! I admit I haven't been around much for a while, so seeing the new layout, graphics and new features was a bit of a shock (albeit a pleasant one)! Great job and thank you to the "Techie Team"/those who helped make these changes happen!
I also appreciate the "like" feature because, as others have similarly expressed, I feel a bit weird wasting space with one-liner posts basically saying "ditto".
I like the new format very much! Well done.
