Dr. Wilkenson discribes the successes she's had with new, alternative treatments for psychiatric patients using medications that heal the brain on the biological level reducing symptoms. As a psychiatrist for many years she was disappointed in how her patients weren't progressing with standard treatment and began researching for alternatives. She discovered that people who have undergone significant trauma/stress where producing high levels of glutamate in their brains. which led to cell death and a myriad of psychiatric disturbances. She reasoned that if this process could be interrupted and treated patients might be truly helped. Now after years of using 2 medications which are glutamate modulators, Ketamine and Remotagene, she has seen extraordinary results with some of her most severely affected patients. This treatment is being studied now and she expects this will become a breakthrough treatment for psychiatric conditions in the near future.

I belong to a group that meets once a week for a zoom chat and Dr. Wilkenson is a member of this group. She apologizes for the poor quality of the audio in some places and will have a improved version in the months to come as well as updates on this treatment.

As a side note, she has watched all the videos of people having seizures around the world. She gave her background of having treated and seen many seizures throughout her career and the people raising their arm and turning during a seizure is definitely something new and unexplained in her opinion.

 
Treating the psychological issues using the neuroinflammatory model is interesting, but her choice of medicine for that, Lamotrigine and Ketamine is questionable. There are other anti-inflammatory substances that could be used instead.
 
One way to treat neuroinflammation is through neurosteroids, either directly, or indirectly through nutrients. Here are some examples of nutrients increasing the allopregnanolone:

I suspect that the same would be valid for coffee polyphenols, although I couldn't find proof for that. It was hard to find it even for green tea because many studies show the opposite results for some reason.

I am wondering if the positive effects that some people report from coffee enemas result from polyphenols not being destroyed during the digestion. Perhaps green tea enemas would be another option for better absorption.
 
The same guy who claims to had good results from pregnenalone, also claims to had brain benefits from a supplement that has Hyaluronic acid/Chondroitin/Collagen/Vitamin C mix:


Well, that supplement is supposed to reduce inflammation, so perhaps this neuroinflammatory model does have practical usefulness for brain issues.

Cognitive decline with age is a harmful process that can reduce quality of life. Multiple factors have been established to contribute to cognitive decline, but the overall etiology remains unknown. Here, we hypothesized that cognitive dysfunction is mediated, in part, by increased levels of inflammatory cytokines that alter allopregnanolone (AlloP) levels, an important neurosteroid in the brain. We assessed the levels and regulation of AlloP and the effects of AlloP supplementation on cognitive function in 4-month-old and 24-month-old male C57BL/6 mice. With age, the expression of enzymes involved in the AlloP synthetic pathway was decreased and corticosterone (CORT) synthesis increased. Supplementation of AlloP improved cognitive function. Interestingly, interleukin 6 (IL-6) infusion in young animals significantly reduced the production of AlloP compared with controls. It is notable that inhibition of IL-6 with its natural inhibitor, soluble membrane glycoprotein 130, significantly improved spatial memory in aged mice. These findings were supported by in vitro experiments in primary murine astrocyte cultures, indicating that IL-6 decreases production of AlloP and increases CORT levels. Our results indicate that age-related increases in IL-6 levels reduce progesterone substrate availability, resulting in a decline in AlloP levels and an increase in CORT. Furthermore, our results indicate that AlloP is a critical link between inflammatory cytokines and the age-related decline in cognitive function.


Integrating Interleukin-6 into depression diagnosis and treatment

There is growing evidence of a relationship between inflammation and psychiatric illness. In particular, the cytokine Interleukin-6 (IL-6) has been linked to stress-related disorders such as depression and anxiety. Here we discuss evidence from preclinical and clinical studies examining the role of IL-6 in mood disorders. We focus on the functional role of peripheral and central release of IL-6 on the development of stress susceptibility and depression-associated behavior. By examining the contribution of both peripheral and central IL-6 to manifestations of stress-related symptomatology, we hope to broaden the way the field thinks about diagnosing and treating mood disorders.


IL-6 Induced by Social Stress Promotes a Unique Transcriptional Signature in the Monocytes that Facilitate Anxiety

Background: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is elevated in circulation with chronic stress and may contribute to neurobehavioral complications. We have reported that repeated social defeat stress in mice caused recruitment of proinflammatory monocytes to the brain and triggered the onset of anxiety-like behavior. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the role of IL-6 signaling in the peripheral immune response, neuroinflammation, and anxiety following stress.

Conclusions: Here, we show the effects of IL-6 on the transcriptional signature of monocytes in circulation and brain after stress. Overall, robust increases in IL-6 after stress induced a primed profile in monocytes that were recruited to the brain and propagated IL-1-mediated inflammation and anxiety.


So, basically, all kinds of things that can reduce the inflammation in the body could potentially be also used for psychological issues.
