Painting- What I've been working on recently

I've been using oil paints and I love how you can build up layers, and how they just flow with the brush.
Very nicely painted, emotions "screaming" from the picture, (do not get me wrong, it's a positive opinion, means that you provided yourself).
Have you ever drawn a picture with a pencil?
Shading can be obtained very clear contours of the body

I love it, Thorn. Great composition- my eyes circled around... The hand in front is well defined and nice job with perspective!! The subject is right up my alley. I love how the flesh is brightly colored yet the theme is dark and haunting. Very cool, edgy piece!

Thorn, have you tried playing with the edges in Photoshop? From the reference it looks like the top arm has a sharp edge, and the bottom arm is softer.

Thanks for sharing Thorn! I'm always inspired by people doing the things I would like to do. I like a painterly style, not too over-rendered. I'd like to do an oil painting one day while the opportunity still exists. Watercolors have a nice painterly effect too. This is probably the most inspiring painter I've seen: http://alrasyid.deviantart.com/gallery/

Hey 3DS what's stopping you :D? I found youtube tutorials to be really helpful, for understanding how oil paints work, and the best ways to use them.

They are also very forgiving, if you make a mistake, some white spirit cleans it off. Or you just wait for it to dry, and then you can work on top again, like nothing happened

Just checked out that artist, it's beautiful work!

Yeah, I've watched a lot of youtube videos. The problem is appplication, I get caught up in the fantasy of creating something and watch others do it. I'm slowly making progress, doing some drawing occasionally. I have some water soulable oils I could use, and some small panels. I might try doing some quick sketches on them. I like anything with a brush really, inking too.

With oil paints I had a concern of toxicity with mineral spirits and pigments, but you can less toxic solvents called Eco-House extra mild citrus cleaner. People also say that you can just use straight walnut oil to thin and clean brushes. I stay away from cadmium, cobalt, and lead pigments. Just wanted to put that out there for any health conscious artists, fwiw.

I like the painting. There is strength we can feel it in this hand so strong. And also the colors are strong, profound and give a sort of good ambiance, it reminds me some painters of the beginning of the 20 century painting obscure streets in Paris ( I don't remember the names. :/ ). I admire painters, and musicians. It is a very amazing language.

Congratulations! Thanks for sharing.

I don't think you have to apologies for looking out for compliments, and don't feel that there is anything bad about that. That is already very brave that you decided to show work in progress, what tells me that you have a confidence, and you know what you still have to do to finish it.

For me as one artist, it is always a big support through the compliments, not just comments, comments are even better as they can help to improve. We all need that, as most of the time it is very autistic and isolated work, and even though that one can be fully confident of capabilities and have one established careear that none will doubt, for me after 25 years, I still feel when new work is approaching I feel like a total beginner and I need all that too, comments, support, compliments etc ... And sure I am picking those that I want to ask, so I am not asking those that are always just looking for bad things, as that is not realistic, and that will put me down too, what I don't need at the start of new project. I can ask them too at the end for final bits, but I think it is normal that we are looking and asking for support, as artistic work is quite emotional, and we need to feel safe at that ground.

Also yes through Lynda you can learn a lot in digital design, web publishing filmmaking illustration etc ...

For the jobs and all that, it is all actually in our hands, and it is good to improve those skills that you can manage successfully, so that you can have a craft in your hands. For example I am not good in drawing and painting, but due to that I mastered collage, and from that came my passion to stop motion so I mastered that to and did some incredible work with that + thanks to Lynda on line tutorials, and on the other side small project budgets, I had to learn how to work with all digital tools in all visual arts, film making and design professionally, so that I can finish my films books etc.

In our profession actually we have always be ready to learn new things and to look for work and create one by our self and than sell it on the markets or through agents and galleries .. it always depend what you will chose as a main focus - art or applied art, and while still in school, it is good opportunity to use time and resources and support to expand your knowledge and to start to think in more open direction asking more expirienced artists and professors. :)

hope this helped a bit! And don't worry, I think that people will not comment anything that for them don't look good, so I am glad the others also see the good work in your painting!

Alot of people in the creative industry I have spoken to say the same thing, maybe it's because when someone creates something, they may feel like it's part of themselves and who they are, and showing their work is opening themselves up to be seen and judged which is scary!
Maybe it's slightly narcissistic too, for example- "My work is part of ME and if you don't like my work that makes me a bad person"

It has helped solarmind thank you. I was quite worried about the thread, but what you said gave me more perspective. I was judging myself harshly.
At least my worrying has made me a little bit more aware of my behavior, for instance at college I'm beginning to question my motives for using certain words/ tone of voice, when I'm speaking/asking about my work.

I agree, the compliments and comments can help us grow, expanding our knowledge base, experimenting with ideas, making us better 'artists' all round...

thankyou casper:D The drawing in the link you sent is brilliant! I do sometimes draw in pencil, I've recently started using charcoal too which I find quite difficult. Do you like to draw?

No I haven't, I think my perspective is a little off isn't it, it seem quite crammed together compared the the referenced photo. When I get to college tommorrow I'll have a go.

Yep, I can totally relate to the fantasy of creating, being on this course I have to make work so it's abit different. Whereas before when I was working, I'd get an urge to create and then just ignore it and put it off.
Good luck with the sketches :D would love to see them when they're done

Thankyou for the heads up about the health effects, I never even considered it. I use white spirit instead of turpentine to thin my paints, and noticed recently that I was starting to feel abit ill in class, mild headaches. And I hadn't even thought about the pigments!!! So thankyou :scared:

P.S thankyou Loreta and Jodi, I'm glad you like it :D

I drew a long time ago, so for my pleasure, thank you for sharing the link :)
Nice Thorn :)

I know little about 'Art', so fwiw: I like the colours - soft and yet kinda moody, for me - and the touch comes across as gentle.

You appear to have a talent for it - Thanks for sharing

Edit: the colours on the FLICKR aren't so moody ;) and i can see why you enjoy building up the oil paint! :)

Well that can also be one of the hidden patterns, but that depends on how you practice and showing that towards others. I didn't get that feeling form you, but yes I think it is good idea to observe how you asking that, and work on your self to change any that you don't feel sincere and helpfull looking for support and advice.

In artistic world there is tons of narcissistic fellows indeed ... showing up, heating others as they are not crazy about their work, gossiping, been jealous, doing bad things behind the back etc ... that is just not what art is about ;) ... have been through that kind of attacks and non fair play games non stop since I started to work, so maybe I become kind of used to that, and I don't give to it much attention any more.

On the identification with the work on a way that I can get personally offended if someone don't like my work, actually I newer had one, even though I am strongly devoted to the work, even when I take a look at that I can hardly imagine it is done by me ;) ... maybe that also have to do a lot with my multiple interest, don't know ...

Also I agree with you that we always have to question our self, how can we know that we are not narcissistic when we believe in our work? and that is not narcissism but just our confidence in our talent, realistic arguments and final opinion .. there is always a need to that question, I think, so we don't fall in to the narcissistic trap, but that we can be confident at the same time ... as this two things are usually confused

...many questions and thinkings .. for me the best thinking is happening when I am working :)
