Plane Crashes and Incidents

What is most ridiculous about this accident is that emergency crews were racing across a busy runway because of a strong odor in another plane. We've gone too far with safety culture. No one's life was in danger, yet life was lost and many injured and traumatized. It's a complete lack of common sense.

Colombian military plane crash

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced in a post on X that at least one person was killed, 77 were injured, and the status of 43 others was yet to be determined.

“The causes of the Hercules plane accident are still unknown. Strength to the families of the young soldiers of the Homeland,” he said.

A video recorded by residents of Puerto Leguizamo (Putumayo) has surfaced, apparently showing the moment when the FAC’s Lockheed C-130 Hercules crashed. The footage shows that the aircraft had barely taken off when it lost altitude and crashed.

Rescue teams and military personnel arrived in Puerto Leguízamo, Putumayo, after a Hercules-type aircraft crashed; there were more than 100 military personnel on board, and so far 20 have been rescued

It seems that the Air Canada/Jazz plane was taxiing after landing, so not travelling at high speed, but still enough to cause this amount of damage:
I believe it was actually landing at the time it slammed into the fire truck, as this footage shows (not the ai bit, the actual footage):
Both pilots killed instantly.

According to Captain Steeve, the early reports are that the Jazz aircraft struck the very large firetruck at about 30 knots but might have been going a little bit faster than that. It just touched the ground and the crash happened at between 1/3 and 1/2 of the runway, which by the way has its own issues too.

VASAviation has more ATC communication records (6 min), with the other emergency going on the same time.

Apparently it was going up to 105 mph (169 km/h) when it hit. Apparently the firemen survived (which is good), but with broken bones. However, the two pilots were killed instantly and I'm not sure about the flight attendant who was ejected from the aircraft (Edit: She was found alive!). This is so sad, for everyone - even ATC who tried to stop the truck after it was given clearance.

FYI but amidst the chaos, something unusual happened in an elevator shaft around the same time at LaGuardia.

strong odor in another plane
The FAA separately issued a ground stop at Newark early Monday morning after the airport’s air traffic control tower was evacuated due to a “burning smell coming from an elevator,” a spokesperson told multiple outlets.

Two planes collided at LaGuardia in October
By Aaron Cooper and Elise Hammond

The fatal wreck between a plane and a fire truck at LaGuardia last night marks just the latest collision at the New York City airport: in October, two Delta Air Lines regional jets collided on the taxiway.

One person was taken to the hospital after that incident late last year, airport officials said.

Both aircraft involved in the “low-speed collision” were CRJ-900 regional jets operated by regional carrier Endeavor Air, according to a statement from Delta at the time.

In the crash yesterday, the plane was landing and slammed into the truck at more than 100 miles per hour, preliminary analysis indicates. The last fatal crash at LaGuardia happened 34 years ago, according to the National Transportation Safety Board’s accident report.

LaGuardia is a major airport that carries tens of millions of passengers each year, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

At least 66 people have died and dozens of others have been wounded after a Colombian military plane with 125 people on board crashed after takeoff in the south of the country, officials have said.

The Lockheed Martin-built C-130 Hercules aircraft went down on Monday shortly after it had departed from Puerto Leguizamo, near the southern border with Ecuador and Peru, strewing burning wreckage on the jungle floor.

Minister of Defence Pedro Sanchez said the plane hit the ground just 1.5km (0.9 miles) away from where it took off, leading to the detonation of ammunition and setting the aircraft ablaze.

There was no indication of an “attack by illegal actors”, Sanchez said.

General Hugo Alejandro Lopez Barreto, the head of the Colombian armed forces, said four military personnel were missing.

“Sadly, as a consequence of this tragic accident, 66 of our military elements died,” he said.

“At the moment, we have no information or indications that it was an attack by an illegal armed group,” Barreto added.

In a video posted on social media, Deputy Mayor Carlos Claros said the victims’ bodies were taken to the small town’s morgue, and that the only two clinics in town treated the injured before they were flown to larger cities.

The updated death toll came shortly after Claros told RCN television that 33 people had died, and that efforts were being made to treat and evacuate dozens of others injured.

Carlos Fernando Silva, the commander of Colombia’s air force, said earlier that two planes, with 74 beds, had been sent to the area to fly the injured back to hospitals in the capital, Bogota, and elsewhere.
