Two planes COLLIDE in midair in Germany - fatalities confirmed

The horror crash took place near Schwabisch Hall Airport, also known as Adolf Wurth airport, aviation monitors AirLive reported this evening. The collision involved “two small private aircraft” and left at least two dead. The death toll could rise, investigators earlier warned. Local media speculated one of the pilots was “blinded by the low sun” as they approached the airport to land.

Newspaper BILD said one of the planes was “torn to shreds”.

Rescuers were unable to approach the crash site for several hours due to fears the planes’ ejector seats could suddenly trigger and injure a member of the emergency crews.

The crash occurred at around 4.15pm local time (3.15pm BST). Rescuers could not access the wreckage until 7.30pm.

The identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed.

Six fire engines and 20 emergency personnel are at the scene.

A police spokesman said: “They were approaching [the airport], I can not say anything more.”

Two pilots are killed as light aircraft collide in mid-air smash over German airfield 'while both trying to land'

At least two people are dead after two small planes collided over an airfield in Germany on Sunday.

The collision occurred above Schwäbisch Hall in the southern state of Baden-Württemberg.

Initial reports said the aircraft - a hobby aircraft and a microlight plane - were trying to land when they smashed into each other.

'They were on the approach, more I can't say yet,' a police spokesman said.

Apparently, the pilot of the single engined aircraft was blinded by bright sunlight on his approach and crashed into the microlight machine. The dead are both pilots.

The microlight erupted into a fireball that was extinguished on the ground by the fire brigade.

The crash site was less than four miles from the local airport and was sealed off by police. Federal aviation authority experts are probing the crash.

MEDINA COUNTY, Texas -
Authorities have identified a pilot killed in a plane crash near the Bexar-Medina county line Sunday morning.
According to Medina County Sheriff Randy Brown, 68-year-old Carl Bray was piloting the plane when it went down around 10:45 a.m. in the wood-covered area behind Texas Research Park off State Highway 211 near Potranco Elementary School.

Brown told KSAT 12 News that the plane slammed into the woods and started a small brush fire.

Bexar County Deputies were first at the scene and had trouble reaching the crash site because of the thick brush.

Brown said Bray had departed from the Freedom Springs Ranch Airport in Bandera County. It's unclear where Bray was headed.

Bray's daughter, Shawn Todd, said her father was a hardworking private pilot who was enjoying retirement.

Bray, Todd said, had proudly served in the Marine Corps and was married to Lynn Bray. He had five daughters, two stepdaughters and a step son.

Todd said she had gone flying with her father often.

1 dead: ‘Chaos all around’ as Southwest jet makes emergency landing

PHILADELPHIA
Passengers aboard a Dallas-bound Southwest Airlines flight Tuesday heard an explosion before seeing oxygen masks drop from the ceiling and a woman sucked toward a broken window in the plane, a witness said.

One person died in the incident, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt. The person has not been identified.

“Everybody was going crazy, and yelling and screaming,” passenger Marty Martinez said of the flight, which left New York and was forced to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

“As the plane is going down, I am literally purchasing internet just so I can get some kind of communication to the outside world,” he said.

The plane had suffered damage to one of its engines, and according to passenger Kristopher Johnson, who was sitting near the front of Flight 1380, debris from the engine flew into the window, breaking it and injuring a woman sitting nearby.

“Shrapnel hit the window causing a serious injury. No other details about that. Several medical personnel on the flight tended to the injured passenger,” Johnson said.

The crew reported damage to one of the aircraft’s engines as well as the fuselage and a window, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

The injured woman’s arms and body were sucked toward the opening in the plane, Martinez recalled in a phone interview. Objects flew out the hole where the window had been, and “passengers right next to her were holding onto her. And meanwhile, there was blood all over this man’s hands. He was tending to her,” said Martinez, who was sitting a row or two away from the woman.

Other passengers began trying to plug the hole with jackets and other objects but to no avail. Those items, too, were sucked out of the plane, he said.

Martinez said he didn’t think he would survive. Nor did his colleague in an adjacent seat who was scrambling to write one last message to his wife and unborn son, he said.

“We could feel the air from the outside coming in, and then we had smoke kind of coming in the window. Meanwhile, you have passengers that were in that aisle, trying to attend to the woman that was bleeding from the window explosion,” he said. “That was just chaos all around.”

The plane descended precipitously, Johnson said, but the pilot regained control and informed passengers the flight was headed to Philadelphia.

“The crew did a great job,” he said.

It was a rough landing, Martinez said, and things were still so chaotic that he wasn’t sure if the plane was going to crash. The jet could have been landing on a freeway for all he knew, he said.

“I didn’t know if we were going to be running into a building. I didn’t know what state the plane or even the pilot was in, if we were in condition to land,” he said. “It was just all incredibly traumatic, and finally when we … came to a halt, of course, the entire crowd was (in) tears and people crying and we were just thankful to be alive.”

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel said earlier that one of the 149 passengers and crew members on board was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Seven others were treated for minor injuries.

“We are in the process of gathering more information,” Southwest said in a statement.

Video from the scene showed the plane on the tarmac surrounded by emergency vehicles. The engine on the left wing was badly damaged.

Philadelphia International Airport said the plane landed safely. Passengers using the airport should expect delays, it said.

The NTSB has sent a team to Philadelphia to investigate the incident. Boeing said it is providing technical assistance in the investigation.

A Delta Air Lines flight from the US to London made an emergency landing in Atlanta, Georgia after an engine caught fire. It comes a day after a passenger died on a Southwest Airlines flight following an engine explosion.

The Airbus A330 left Atlanta bound for Heathrow Airport Wednesday evening, but was forced to return to its airport of departure after crews reported engine problems 20 minutes into the flight, reports KTVU FOX2.
FOX reporter Aiun Nettles, who was onboard at the time of the incident, posted footage showing alarming plumes of smoke coming from the engine.

The aircraft returned to Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta approximately 40 minutes after take-off, and was met by fire crews who extinguished the blaze.

Passengers were put on another flight to London and the Federal Aviation Authority has launched an investigation into the incident.
One person was killed on a Southwest Airlines flight Tuesday after one of the plane’s engines exploded mid-air. Jennifer Riordan, 43, died after being almost sucked out of a window which was smashed during the engine failure. One dead after plane crash HORROR in Tennessee, US - authorities rush to scene

ONE person has been killed after a plane crashed at the Collegedale Municipal Airport in Hamilton County, Tennessee.

Chris Swain, director of the Collegedale Municipal Airport, said one person has died after a plane crash on the runway Friday.

Mr Swain said the plane with a single occupant was taking off when it crashed.

He added: "It's always sad when something like this happens.”

The plane is considered a total loss.

The person involved in the fatal event has not yet been identified.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been made aware of the incident and are on the way to the scene.

Police say the crash happened around 6:30 pm near 5100 Bess Moore Road.

UPDATE: Victim identified in fatal plane crash at Collegedale airport

The man killed in the plane crash Friday evening has been identified as Robert Gillisse, 62, of Ooltewah.

One person was killed early Friday evening in a single-engine plane crash at the Collegedale Municipal Airport.

Airport officials said the pilot, who has yet to be identified by authorities, was alone and taking off when the two-seat plane crashed a couple dozen yards off the airstrip. Emergency responders at the scene put up sheets over a portion of the crash as the body was removed later Friday.

"It's always sad when something like this happens," said Chris Swain, director of operations at the airport.

Details are limited about the circumstances behind the crash, but this is not the first fatal incident at the Collegedale airport. Five other planes have crashed at the airport since 2004 resulting in 11 fatalities.

Three of those deaths came in a particularly tragic incident in 2016 when a pilot tried to recover from a botched landing just before hitting the ground, according to a report compiled by the National Transportation Safety Board. The pilot, Todd Silver, was killed along with his mother and his son. His daughter was seriously injured but survived.

The Times Free Press reported previously that a flight instructor who was flying with a student nearby witnessed the crash. He told NTSB investigators that he saw the plane coming in on a short final approach.

The plane made a climbing turn to the left near the departure end of the runway, about 100 feet off the ground, and then made a steep bank to the right with the nose pulled high.

During that turn, the plane's nose dropped and the whole aircraft rotated as it rapidly descended into the ground.

The plane then slammed into the ground, leaving a 70-foot-long scar in the ground, according to the NTSB.

Swain said both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified about Friday's crash and investigators were expected to work through the night to unpack what happened.

Denise Barnes was at her desk at a construction firm when she heard a boom so loud it shook the building and windows rattled.

"It was horrible," said Denver Goodwin, who works at a wrecker service down the street from the crash. "The ground shook like a bomb was going off. All the people in the building started panicking. It was absolutely horrible."

Mary Hennessy Cogar was at her place of employment, about 4 miles south of the crash, and said she felt the impact.

"Our building shook and the lights flickered. We heard a boom of the crash and then a louder boom of the explosion," she told CNN.

The crash did not occur at the airport but a few miles away, off state Highway 21, airport spokeswoman Candace Carpenter said. Smoke was visible from the airport.

CHICAGO -- A Southwest Airlines flight heading from Chicago to Newark was forced to make an emergency landing in Cleveland on Wednesday, after a window apparently cracked on the plane, according to CBS Chicago. FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory told CNN that Southwest Flight 957 from Midway to Newark landed safely in Cleveland, after a report of an issue with a window aboard the aircraft.

Southwest Airlines said the crew decided to land in Cleveland "for maintenance review of one of the multiple layers of a window plane."

"The aircraft has been taken out of service for maintenance review, and our local Cleveland employees are working diligently to accommodate the 76 customers on a new aircraft to Newark," the airline said in a statement.

Several passengers have shared pictures of the broken window on Twitter.

Just last month, a Southwest jet apparently blew an engine and got hit by shrapnel, smashing a window. One passenger died and seven others were injured. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chairman Robert Sumwalt said it was the first passenger fatality in a U.S. airline since 2009.

CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.

Costly ‘mishaps’ & non-combat deaths in US Air Force prompt day-long pause in operations
Published time: 8 May, 2018 23:05
A rise in accidents has prompted the US Air Force to stage a one-day safety review this month, American officials said. The analysis of aircraft and strategies comes after a military cargo plane fell out of the sky in Georgia.

Prior to May 21, the aerial branch of the US military will carry out a pause of its activities in order to hammer out problems that have reportedly plagued its operations over the course of the past year.

According to Major General John Rauch, the Air Force chief of safety, conditions don’t appear to be up to scratch, with a rise in “mishaps” and numerous fatalities.

READ MORE: USAF may be forced into massive reduction of planned F-35 fleet – report

“The rationale behind [the review] is an increase in recent ‘Class A’ mishaps for manned aircraft, as well as the fatality rates this years,” Rauch said in a press briefing on Tuesday, Military.com reported.

“It gives [units] the chance to identify issues that they can work and elevate up to the major command level and the air staff if necessary,” he added.

A ‘Class A’ mishap, according to the US Department of Defense, is when an accident results in damage to government property in excess of $2 million, usually due to an aircraft being destroyed or a serviceman being severely injured.

More than 16 US Air Force members have died in non-combative aircraft incidents in 2018. Nine people onboard a Lockheed C-130 Hercules lost their lives on May 2 when it came down on the outskirts of Savannah, Georgia.

While the cause of the crash has not yet been determined, video footage showed how the military cargo plane took a nosedive from the sky into the ground near a busy highway.

On Tuesday, the US Air Force top brass announced the day-long break to address safety concerns, with the service’s chief of staff warning they cannot afford to lose people or military hardware to such accidents.

“I am directing this operational safety review to allow our commanders to assess and discuss the safety of our operations and to gather feedback from our Airmen who are doing the mission every day,” said US Air Force chief of staff General David Goldfein.

“We cannot afford to lose a single Airman or weapons system due to a mishap that could have been prevented,” he added.

“Our men and women have volunteered to give their last full measure for America’s security. My intent is to have commanders lead focused forums with their Airmen to help identify gaps and seams that exist or are developing, which could lead to future mishaps or unsafe conditions.”

State police say a man is being treated for injuries sustained when the small aircraft he was piloting crashed in Virginia.

A news release Monday from Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya says the ultralight personal aircraft crashed in Northampton County just after 3 p.m. Sunday. It says the aircraft's engine cut off, causing it to drop, clipping a power line as it descended. It struck the ground in a field.

Anaya says the male pilot, 67-year-old Barry Y. Maggio, was being treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.

Engine Failure Caused US Air National Guard Plane Crash, Footage Shows (VIDEO)

A US military pilot experienced in flying the country’s C-130 transport planes say that based on surveillance camera footage of the C-130 that crashed in the US state of Georgia in early May, the cause of the lethal accident appears to be engine failure.

"It looked like a critical engine failure," said Dusty Cook in a Sunday interview with military.com. Cook piloted C-130s for more than a decade as a US Marine.

The video, captured on a nearby shop's security camera, seems to show "the number one engine" failing and causing the plane roll over. "It looks like it lost lift and it lost power on the left side, and that's why I'm assuming it was the number one engine," the veteran aviator noted.

On May 2, an Air National Guard C-130 Hercules crashed near Savannah, Georgia, killing all nine service members aboard the aircraft. The US military has initiated an investigation into the tragedy but a formal publication of the investigators' findings is not expected for several months.
