This has been posted on our Putin thread and all over social media so most people may have seen it, but I thought I would post it here in case it has not been seen. I thought this was particularly beautiful and I highly recommend watching it.

I tried to watch this but the video jut says going live soon with only a loud continuous beep sound. A lovely idea though. I just hope it has not been taken off the net - because music - and the concert in itself - proves that Russia cannot be the demon it is portrayed to be. Why would it do a concert if it had been targeting civilians, a they like to portray.

It starts at 25:30 with a speech by the conductor followed by live speech from Putin and then the concert :)

IMO it succeeds in fulfilling it's aim! It really is beautiful. It's mind boggling that not so long ago it was in ISIS control- a destructive dark force, and now it's host to a display of beauty, sadness, gratefulness and hope.
 
We all know that music cures and the symbolism of this concert is not just beautiful but extraordinary: curing the stones of Palmyra, this music is curing also all what Palmyra is for Humanity: our past, our History that many people wanted to erase, and not just Isis. So the music is curing the past, our past that is hurt. Curing this past the music is curing our present, Syrians and part of the humanity, is curing us, giving us hope and energy.

This is really service to others, what this orquesta is doing and what Putin is doing also. :)

The Mariinsky Theater’s symphony orchestra under Valery Gergiyev will give a concert titled ‘Prayer for Palmyra: Music Revives Ancient Walls’ at the world-famous amphitheater later on Thursday.

Palmyra, a historical site featuring on UNESCO’s cultural heritage list, was liberated by the Syrian army at the end of March. Russian military specialists participated in planning the operation and Russian combat aircraft made about 500 sorties during the operation to regain control of the city.

Ancient Palmyra was greatly damaged by the IS militants, who had kept the city under control for nearly a year. Russian specialists at the Hermitage Museum and the Likhachev Research Institute of Cultural and Natural Heritage have expressed readiness to restore Palmyra to its original look.

Two cultural events to be held in the ancient city of Palmyra on the occasions of Martyrs’ Day in Syria and the Victory Day in Russia.

The first event has started amid large popular turnout through the concert of the Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theater, headed by Maestro Valery Gergiev at Palmyra’s Roman Theater.

During the event, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke via TV linkup, thanking the organizers for this “amazing humanitarian event.”

“This celebration is a sign of gratitude, memory and hope – a gratitude to all those who fight terrorism and sacrifice their lives; a memory for all victims of terror regardless of the place and time of crimes committed against humanity; and, of course, a hope to rescue the modern civilization from this terrible plague-the international terrorism,” President Putin said.

He affirmed that any success in fighting against terrorism should be evaluated as a joint victory by everyone, without exception, and then triumph over terror would be possible.

For his part, Russian culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky said “We are against all crimes perpetrated by terrorists in Syria,” considering this event and the restoration of art to historical theater of Palmyra as a message to the whole world that terrorism has no religion or roots.

Syrian renowned director Najdat Anzour said “The Syrians, in cooperation with the Russians, have been able to liberate Palmyra and restore brilliance to its ancient theater,” hoping all Syria would be purified from terrorism.

The second event will be held on Friday under the patronage of President Bashar al-Assad in memory of the martyrs under the title “The Sun Gate.”

The event will be held at Palmyra’s Roman Theater with the participation of Syrian National Symphony Orchestra, Syrian National Orchestra for Arab Music, Orchestra Mary and al-Farah Choir.

A performance by a Russian orchestra in the ruins of Palmyra in Syria on Thursday resulted in an exchange of caustic remarks between Moscow and British diplomats.

While the Western media immediately criticized the event, calling it part of the Kremlin's campaign to trumpet Russia's military triumph in Syria, most foreign politicians remained silent or reserved in their comments.

However, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond slammed the concert as “a tasteless attempt to distract attention from the continued suffering of millions of Syrians,” referring to a recent air strike on a refugee camp in northern Syria, which killed at least 28 civilians. The opposition blamed the strikes on Syrian government forces, backed by Russia.

“It shows that there are no depths to which the regime will not sink. It is time for those with influence over Syrian President Bashar Assad to say enough is enough," Hammond added, Agence France Press reported.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reacted with sarcasm.

“It's very sad that Hammond didn't like the concert. We were all run off our feet to make sure he liked it, everything was done for him,” the ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.

“Now we know that he does not know anything about music, and nobody is interested in his comments anymore,” Zakharova added.

The concert by Russia's famed Mariinsky theater orchestra was performed in Palmyra's Roman amphitheater on Thursday evening to celebrate the liberation of the city from Islamic State militants by the Syrian army.

The performance titled “With a prayer from Palmyra: Music revives the ancient walls,” was led by the conductor Valery Gergiev and also featured President Vladimir Putin's close friend, cellist Sergei Roldugin.

The Russian delegation included Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky and the director of the Hermitage museum Mikhail Piotrovsky.

Putin addressed the concert by video from Sochi. He thanked the musicians and said that he considers the event “as a sign of gratitude to all those who fight against terrorism, even putting their own lives at risk,” the Interfax news agency reported.

The Islamic State is a terrorist group banned in Russia.

The Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre played amid the ancient ruins of Palmyra under the direction of People's Artist of Russia Valery Gergiev. The concerns was called "Prayer for Palmyra. Music revives ancient walls."

Washington found the concert of the Russian world-famous orchestra in Palmyra a positive event. According to US State Department spokesman Mark Toner, the US praised the musical event in Palmyra, but denounced the fact that Bashar Assad's regime replaced the Islamic State in Palmyra.

Russian President Putin appeared in a video address to the people attending the concert in Palmyra. Strangely enough, Western media paid a lot less attention to the liberation of Palmyra and the mine clearance of the ancient city.

Of course the MSM has to perverse something so beautiful just because it doesn't support their imperialistic genocidal agenda in Syria. Just a year ago ISIS beheaded an archaeologist for refusing to coperate with them on that ancient location. That wasn’t worth noticing but somehow this concert is the work of the devil.
 
Music is so important for the soul. Western and specially politicians are crooks. Russians know how important is the soul.

During the Second World War in the cities you had always concerts of music, in the parks, for the citizens because it was good for their life, to give them hope and to calm their spirit. These politicians that criticise Putin are doing what they are criticizing: they are weaponizing this concert. They are psychopaths. Surely we don't need at all this type of men ruling countries. They are really givers of nausea. :barf:

I wasn't aware of the event you described, of an archaeologist being beheaded, although I have come across several news reports, of captives being line up at Palmyra and beheaded on a number of occasions. I would think, the individual - who brings themselves to perform such a monstrous hideous act, has to be "possessed" and totally void of any "spark of life".

Thinking on another level, think of the horror, confusion and depth of fear, the victims experienced leading up to their violent deaths - just because they happened to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time and were selected as a victim? Would their violent death - leave an imprint at the location and cause some souls - to stay earth-bound?

It had been stated, The symphony orchestra concert was titled “Praying for Palmyra". Could the event also be symbolic as a "Spiritual recuse and release of Souls" due to the "intent of prayer" and harmonics of a full symphony orchestra? The tones in the musical instruments, giving recognition to the Souls that were sacrificed there and releasing them into the light, so they can complete their journey?

Maybe, my line of thinking is really "off" for I'm looking at the event, as also including a spiritual intent - to neutralize the energies in that location?

His name was Khaled al-Asaad, 81 years old. He refused to tell Isis where the relics were hidden and remained defiant till the very end. He told them he would ''die standing up'' before he was beheaded.

It was an open execution. Many people where executed there and the population was forced to watch. Whoever tried to leave was killed as well.

Such violent deaths are very traumatic. Music can touch the soul and I hope that for those who couldn’t find peace can do so now. Palmyra has been freed from these monsters. I think you are totally right that this symphony wasn’t only for the living.

The retaking of Palmyra likely means more than we can understand.
 
I always saw the batlle of Palmyra as a battle that concerns all humanity. This city is not just an historical city for tourists. The majority of articles talk about how this city was a big city for tourism and give emphasis on this but the real Palmyra is a city about civilisation, history of humanity, the stones are a part of our history as humans. Putin knows and the Syrian and also I am sure the musicians and evidently all of us that can understand how it is important history and its stones that look at us since the beginning of the times. I see this concert as a gift to heal not just the souls of the victims but to heal the stones of Palmyra, our past, and healing our past we heal this present.
