Hi All,
I want to share something bothering me, to release the pressure a bit.
Last Saturday I had an interview for a job and was offered the position. This was excellent in that I have not worked for 2-years now and it is becoming quite a problem. I have hundreds of resumes out there yet this is only the second interview in all that time.
The position would meet my needs though it was falsely advertised. A certain pay scale was advertised, which upon calculating would equate to roughly half of my last salary. In the interview though I discovered that the company offered this "pay" based upon working 50-60 hour weeks and paying overtime, so now it is working twice as hard for half the pay. At an hourly rate though it was 30% of what I previously earned. Still, I was grateful and thought give it a few months, see what happens. The office is 5-minutes from my house and would meet my needs as stated.
Well this was Tuesday, first day of work.
On Wednesday, first thing, arriving 6:30 AM and I am pulled aside and told they are letting me go.
:O
I asked why but the Ops Manager would not say. In discussing I could see his eyes go real big and it seemed like he wanted me to get upset, etc. I was understandably upset but kept my cool in talking to him and merely said "I accept your decision but want to know WHY?" He refused to answer.
So, I left.
It turned out that on Tuesday when I started another lady started that day as well (was not told about her during the interview) and in talking to her it became clear she agreed to accept pay even less than what I reluctantly agreed to. She also mentioned that she recently left Texas "in the middle of the night"with her two children, has an ex-husband and an ex-fiancee, so in a certain sense I feel that her needs are greater than mine and in that respect I am OK with it.
Yet this company is something. A small "environmental management" firm that does landscaping and focuses upon snow and ice management during winter. Clearing streets, parking lots, big corporations, etc. Wal-Mart here local happens to be a client. They also had proposals lying around which I looked through and noticed one to the White House for SIMS (Snow and Ice Management System) - whether they were awarded that contract I do not know, but there was a fishy feeling to it. Like thats not truly what it is about.
This is compounded by the fact that the owner of the company strikes me as a complete and utter liar, extremely narcissistic and based on the feel I got from meeting him would not be surprised at all if he is part of the Scottish Rite here locally. He left me a voice-mail stating he sent an email requesting me to come in for interview, but he never sent that email, so lied, either consciously or unconsciously. Since then I have emailed a couple times requesting him to inform me if he would pay cash or check for the day worked on Tuesday, to which I have received no reply. Its like he is secretive and hiding and wants no paper trail.
I do not know the legality of advertising position as he did and yet basing the advertised annual pay upon working 60-hour weeks, but legal or not it is underhanded and I think they decided to have me and the woman "compete" for the position. She agreed to less money and the job is not rocket science, can easily pick it up in a few days I think.
Well, it turns out, also, that on that first day we were in a training room watching videos (with other people coming and going, talking, distracting attention, but, whatever, your company buddy run it how you want to) and they were listening in on conversations during the day. In fact they "showed" us this by opening the intercom mic at the end of the day so that we were aware they could listen up front when we were in the back.
I never said anything outrageous, which I can be prone to do,
, only commented a bit on HFCS and how I dont drink the stuff, also talked about cutting sugar, wheat, gluten, dairy, etc, etc, in passing conversation.
The other strange thing is that this Ops Manager told me on Saturday he used to be in the Air Force, that the "CIA wanted/recruited him" but he supposedly left and that he regrets that decision. He worked in the Reagan White House and says he met Kissinger.
All that could be purely happenstance, and one way or another it does not matter now I suppose, but I have to say it was quite a shock on Wednesday.
I also feel lied to, in that (1) the pay was falsely advertised; (2) we were listened to without our knowledge or consent (spying) (3) they would NOT state a reason as to WHY!
I guess in the end it is better this way because I do not want to work somewhere that such a lack of trust is ongoing, but, the blow and pressure are intense now.
Thus endeth the rant!
kind regards,
