It was a very sad day yesterday, and, I'd say, shameful for Russia.
One of her best army generals, Gen. Ivan Popov, ex-commander of the 58th Army, was sentenced to five years in a low-security penal colony, a fine of 800,000 rubles (about $9,600) and stripped of his rank by Russian Garrison Military Court in Tambov in a highly politically motivated and made up "fraud on a particularly large scale" (of 100 million rubles) and official forgery case hold in full behind closed doors.
After hearing the sentence, Popov who claimed not guilty throughout the whole trial time, replied to a journalist's question with a few lines of a poem:
More than 500 military personnel were ready to speak out in court in defense of the ex-commander of the 58th Army of the Russian Armed Forces. More than 15 commanders of military units participating in a special military operation have testified in court. To no avail.
Yes, it was wrong to get into conflict with his military superiors, especially at that particular time, no matter how right his complains were. As Popov himself admitted having his last word time the day before the verdict, according to media reports:
Oleg Tsarov:
The latter Oleg's link goes to TG channel by Yuri Podolyaka who followed the case very closely since the very beginning. Yesterday, he wrote, quite emotionally:
In January, a lawyer from the Zaporozhe region said at the hearing that the region did not consider itself an injured party, since Ivan Popov did not cause any damage. The metal structures in question in the case were humanitarian aid, and not budgeted expenses.
There were also reports that the said tons of rolled metal still sit in the warehouse untouched. Hard to tell, having everything classified - in a case of alleged metal theft as if there was anything top secret about that.

He wasn't. It's about wrath, not justice. Or so it seems based on what we know.
It's also sadly ironic that it happens 2 weeks before the Victory Day. Some years ago, then chief of staff of the 22nd Army Guard Corps, Colonel Ivan Ivanovich Popov hosted the May 9 military parade in the Crimean capital. It was 2018. He said then:

And even when the storm | Rises up through the water, | Remember, you are the lighthouse.

On which his lawyer Sergei Buinovsky commented, that his client's words were spoken in a specific context: Popov said that everyone makes mistaken, including him, and this was said in relation to his conversation with senior bosses, and not in terms of the charges brought against him.In his last word, Popov noted that he may have made some mistakes in life, made mistakes somewhere, but certainly did not break the law, and always remained faithful to the oath, his people and the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. He also reiterated his innocence and asked the court to make a fair, wise, impartial decision in his case in the deliberation room, to give him the opportunity to be useful to his country in such a difficult time
Oleg Tsarov:
Judging by yesterday's poll results, (Олег Царёв) the majority of my readers believe Ivan Popov is innocent, [so one would think] a jury would very likely acquit him. And despite their belief in his innocence, 77% of my readers remained of the opinion that Ivan Popov would be convicted. This says a lot about people's trust in our judicial system.
It is a pity that the scenario in which he would have been convicted but released did not materialize. In our judicial system, when a person is accused of a criminal offense, but the defendant avoids prison, gets a fine and is released from the pre-trial detention center, it is considered a de facto acquittal.
The probability of such a decision, based on judicial practice, is a fraction of a percent. And Popov did not fall into it. Courts make such decisions when not only do they realize that the prosecution is obviously wrong, but in addition, influential forces have come forward in defense of the accused. In this case, apparently, the influential forces acted in favour of the opposite side.
The latter Oleg's link goes to TG channel by Yuri Podolyaka who followed the case very closely since the very beginning. Yesterday, he wrote, quite emotionally:
The case of General Ivan Popov: Tambov garrison court sentenced itself...
Five years, deprivation of military rank, a fine of 800,000 rubles. This is the verdict of the “court”. Or rather, a trial.
The sentence was to be expected, taking into account that the case was opened on a specific order as a primitive petty revenge of, in fact, a weak man.
Meanwhile, more [law] violations than there were at the trial of the ex-commander of the 58th Army have never happened before in the history of Russian justice.
Just to understand - there is no injured party in the case, no damages, no direct evidence, the overwhelming number of witnesses are in favor of the accused. And he is found guilty, jailed, and deprived of a future. All lawyers tap their temples [a gesture for "crazy"] and say that this cannot happen in a state governed by the rule of law. It can; moreover, a precedent has now been set in Russia.
Only because the CUSTOMER of this disgrace can ensure it. Yes, unfortunately, this is possible in our country. And Russians are now convinced of it. Including hundreds of thousands of soldiers at the front who (I haven't heard any exceptions so far) were waiting for an acquittal. And first of all former subordinates of Ivan Ivanovich, who say that NO ONE cared more about the soldiers and results than Ivan Ivanovich did.
If anyone doubts it, I recommend that you go and check it out.
And the conclusion of this verdict is self-evident: “In Russia, everyone can be sued, even if there is none of the things I listed above."
I hate to write this, but it is a FACT.
But I hasten to upset the CUSTOMER (although he himself already realizes it). He has not achieved and will never achieve the main thing for himself.
Russia will always remember Ivan Ivanovich Popov as a winner who repelled the most powerful blow of the AFU in this war. And he will always be a HERO for Russia.
And now after this verdict he has also made him a martyr. This is all he has achieved at this stage.
And of course, Ivan Ivanovich will pursue justice to the end. All the way up to the Supreme Court. And this very Supreme Court will have to legalize this, as I believe, lawlessness.
And this will carry very great risks for the country. This is a precedent. And it is a very dangerous precedent.
But whatever it is, I believe in justice. And I will do everything I can to make sure that justice prevails in this case.

During the hearing, it was also noted that as a result of the actions of the major general, defensive lines were built, thanks to which it was possible to successfully repel the counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense also does not make property claims against Popov, the newspaper reports.
Let us recall that General Popov led the troops that stood in the Zaporozhye region and were able to contain the Ukrainian counter-offensive in 2023.
Vlad Shlepchenko:
No one is interested in clarifying the circumstances and clarifying the real situation there (in court - ed.). They are interested in getting it right and passing a guilty verdict. Of course, I am not a judge, I can't give final assessments, but in a case in which, according to the investigation, the injured party refused to consider itself an injured party, in which there is no damage, in which the prosecution witnesses retracted their testimony, in which the people who were supposed to accuse and incriminate Popov of committing a crime were thanking the military man for saving them from the Ukrainian occupation - something wrong is going on. This man continues to remain in the pre-trial detention center and under trial. That is, the very course of the case shows that there is a very strong influence of apparatus' games and a very strong influence of the order, which is very difficult to trump with incoming events, data, information and everything else.

I don’t know Popov personally, but I know that he was removed by the Chief of the General Staff for some statements. And that he sold some metal structures there — is complete nonsense. We need to figure it out.
You know what is happening in the Ministry of Defense now: everyone is resigning, someone is being arrested. Army and Ministry of Defense Commander — different things. Sales of metal structures version is unconvincing. ...
I don’t know, metal structures are usually not used, wood, soil and reinforced concrete are used. ...
War correspondent Alexander Sladkov
I won’t swear or condemn so as not to worsen the situation. But I know one thing: Ivan stood at the head of the forces that repelled the enemy’s counter-offensive, unthinkable in tragedy and intensity. I am sure that they will sort it out and not execute.
I would like to see General Popov in service. They forgive lies and losses to the stupid; others, I think, can forgive the ruthless truth. A general like Popov could be forgiven.
