Revamp of The Wave - feedback and suggestions welcome

Since the idea is to grab the attention of someone that isn't acquainted with Laura's work, and probably that someone believes, and thus reads "new age" books, i think a middle ground between the more new age covers and the more sober ones is a good thing, in order to catch the attention of the new age type reader and at he same time to separate the work of Laura which isn't new age at all. With this in mind i think JR's covers and the green cover of the first book are a way to follow.
I also really like the covers with the birds in them, perhaps the bird symbol could be present in the covers, because it transmits a sense of freedom (don't know if this was the intention but i think a bird is a really good symbol for freedom).
Also, perhaps the designs of the covers could tend to be more symbolic, as opposed to more realistic images, because this way, the cover of the book could start to transmit from the "beginning" one important concept, namely, that reality in our level is symbolic.

But just for the sake of beauteousness, this one wins, hands down.

As to the idea of a puzzle, I think it's great! I would suggest that the covers are of the same style but with variations, like JR did on his three designs, and that it's just the spines together that form the "puzzle". When someone gets the whole series, they would see the puzzle come together. I think that would look really cool on a shelf, and maybe it'd attract people to it. ;)

I agree. Plus I got an idea from something I've been reading (Note: the proposition, premisses and conclusion would be a matter of choice): Picture attached to post. Must be logged in to view it.

Explanation of the diagrams:

The overall sguare: the 'whole' class, is divided into an upper half (X) and a lower half (not-X). The overall square is further divided into a left half (Y) and right half (not-Y).

Each quarter is then divided by an inner square, into an inner area (Z) and outer area (not-z).

The red circle represents existence (ex: Some X exists). The gray circle represents non-existence.

When the circles are placed in various compartments a visual representation of a 'proposition' can be made, as well as the premises and conclusion.

When properly utilized, maybe the various false dichotomies that underlie some of the "Us vs Them" propositions can provide a simple, yet powerful method to help younger, less ponerized minds to "snap out of it" a bit easier.

I find it so difficult to comment on these kinds of things such as colours and such!

But I find I really want to support the idea of something on the bottom or in a corner that identifies it as a "wave book" or "Wave book x" to emphasize it is part of a continuity.

Excellent work all!

No worries, Breton. Even though the mock-ups I posted didn't all have that, we do plan on including it, no matter what designs we choose, as I mentioned in the first post. I like the idea for a spine image puzzle as well.

Here are my thoughts so far based on what everyone has said: While all the covers I posted originally are really good, some on their own, and some in tandem with the others, as they are they lack continuity. The Wave 1 earth/grid covers are probably too dated. The birdie covers are very pretty, too, but don't really fit the genre. I'm ordinarily a big fan of this type of design, but it seems more prominent in novels (see _http://covers.fwis.com/feed.xml for examples, also search for the new P.S. editions of Huxley's books) and might be too different from other examples of the esoteric genre. Also, it sounds like faces on covers don't work, unless they are more of the "stock" type, like johnnyradar used.

In fact, I think johnnyradar's covers are a great synthesis of all the ideas and suggestions presented so far, and IMO work perfectly for the series. I agree with the feedback that continuity is a good idea, and the format of the covers allows for both variety and continuity. Any book in the series would be easily recognizable as being in the series on first glance without even any need to read the text. On closer inspection it is confirmed that they are "wave books". The art fits the concepts, is engaging, meaningful, attractive. Also, the combination of colors makes them seem as if they're taking the old one-color-each format to a new level.

I also agree with the feedback about the green Wave1H example. Laura mentioned that she doesn't like green on black, so perhaps the color could be altered and the title text changed. I also had the idea that, if it could be adapted to whatever format we end up using, it could be used as a cover for wave 8, which will have the title Debugging the Universe. The code over the earth and the alchemical images, go really well with that idea.

I'm still looking forward to hearing some feedback from outside the forum, if possible, and if any else wants to give it a go, please do. But I for one am really happy with what JR developed so far!

I vote for this one too.

And this one. They both grabbed my attention. I think they would make people wonder what the book is about and buy it. Beautiful work everyone :)

Wow, lots of incredible work being done. Props to all the artists! I wish I had that skill/talent.

Here's my thoughts/favorite fwiw:

I really like this one, but agree, it seems dated. I like the concept though, perhaps if Stuart could Stuart-ify it we'd have something a bit more up-to-date and visually appealing with the same thematic elements.

This one seems to be popular, but I just had the feeling that there was too much going on, like it was really busy visually.

JR's work here is Really good. I like how he incorporated the same thematic elements from 1B, yet it feels fresh.

This one is awesome. I REALLY dig it, and it gives visualization to the concept of 'soul hacking'.

I really Love the style Stuart has going on here. If i were to pick it up my first thought would be a REALLY interesting fiction work though. I dig the color, the wispy lines, and the shadow-peeps.

This one looks pretty sick too, but I think it'd do well in with red as the primary background instead of blue. The second one is really cool, but I think that empty space in the upper left could do with a bit more shading. I'm not an artist mind you, so take that with a heavy dose of salt.

Overall I think the originals that AI Posted were a bit too artsy. I'd love to hang a few of them on my walls as posters (maybe RPP Should get into the poster biz!) but for book covers they don't really catch my interest and they feel dated.

My 2 cents.

Really spoilt for choice now and I am guessing more to come. Keep it coming people. Networking is just awesome.

Just wanted to say that Johnny Radar's designs are exceptional! Visual consistency is *essential* between volumes, and JR pulls all that off while at the same time incorporating many of the elements discussed so far. I also like the idea of changing the colour palette slightly from one volume to the next (which JR did).

I liked all the other designs also, so if you were one of those other graphic artists, good work!

Yes, I agree - such creativity and more great ideas certain to come! I am leaning towards JohnnyRadar's submissions though (and do like the green a lot - but I am partial to greens!) :D

Wow... lots of comments! I tried to work the suggestions into these, increasing the size of the type and incorporating more of the circle theme. Also, the image on book 1 is changed from the first one to "Earth and the Wave" by Spyraal. It fit really well and portrayed the idea of the wave and cometary impacts more than the one I did, osit. Hopefully he won't mind! :/

Hmm...I have to admit that I like the first version much better. It was clean, straight to the point, and had a serious (scientific?) appeal to it, including incorporating somewhat "mysterious"/metaphysical concepts as well. I also liked how you placed Cassiopaea in the corner, but still as if a part of the rest of the stars. It was smart.

And the new version, well....can't say anything really good about that. ;) That's my opinion, anyway.
