Russia Begins Operations in Syria: End Game for the US Empire?

Is the U.S. responsible for the rocket mortars that "landed near the RT crew" in the City of Daraa where they were filming?

US Launches Rockets Into Southern Syria From Jordan For First Time
http://www.ibtimes.com/us-launches-rockets-southern-syria-jordan-first-time-2335353?

The U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group fired three land-based artillery rockets into southern Syria from Jordan for the first time, the Pentagon said Friday. The strikes underscore the growing coordination between the coalition and opposition groups based in the southern Syria.

“It’s a good indicator that we can integrate with these southern-based opposition forces. And we fully intend to continue leveraging that,” Army Col. Steve Warren, a representative of the U.S. Defense Department, said at a media briefing Friday. “Six or so months ago, during testimony, the secretary [Ash Carter] talked about how our overall strategy includes strengthening the defense of Jordan. The Jordanians have been very close partners to us in the fight against terror writ large, and certainly, they’ve borne a heavy burden of displaced persons and migrants.”

The opposition groups in the southern areas of Syria have been more successful than those in the northern reaches of the country, largely because ISIS is not as dominant there. The Southern Front is a group consisting of former members of the Free Syrian Army — the original rebels that revolted against President Bashar Assad after the Syrian Civil War began five years ago. They are mostly moderate rebels who primarily focus on fighting the regime in Daraa and Quneitra.

It is unclear how much coordination there is between the U.S. and the Southern Front. Some members of the group were trained under previous U.S. military programs at a base in Jordan, while others were armed under a CIA program that launched in 2013.

In the spring of 2013, the U.S. selected groups of rebels fighting with the Free Syrian Army to participate in a classified CIA-led program, which was formally announced in August of that year. The program allowed for the transfer of U.S.-made weapons to Turkey via other countries’ aircraft. The weapons were then driven into Syria on trucks. The program was partially funded by Saudi Arabia and other wealthy Sunni Muslim states. In 2014, the U.S. ramped up efforts to support the moderate opposition and began training several thousand rebels at a secret base in Jordan.

The emergence of ISIS set the rebels back. They had to fight on multiple fronts with comparatively few resources and dwindling American support. Now, though, it appears the U.S. is ramping up its military support of the rebels.

The rocket launches from Jordan came as international powers and the Syrian regime attempt to solidify a ceasefire agreement and negotiate peace. Although the ceasefire has technically been in place since the end of February, the opposition rebels in the northern part of the country have announced several violations by Russian aircraft. The Southern Front is largely against the ceasefire brokered by the U.S. and Russia because it allows the regime to target the area the opposition rebels control in Darayya, a suburb of the capital Damascus.

RT crew comes under fire while filming in Daraa city, Syria
https://www.rt.com/news/335452-mortars-rt-daraa-syria/

Mortars landed next to where an RT crew was filming in the city of Daraa in southwest Syria, RT's Lizzie Phelan reported from the scene.

"Two mortars [were] fired from opposition turf near where we were filming," Phelan said, reporting from the area close to the border with Jordan.

A mortar shell hit a building near to where RT journalists were working.

No injuries have been reported following the incident.

"We were in the streets of Daraa city talking to local people five years since the war began, and our work there was cut short when a mortar was fired from opposition territory, landing on a building very close to us," Phelan told RT by phone shortly after the incident.

The crew had to cut short the interview, get into the car and leave the area.

"Just a few seconds after we got into the car, another mortar landed in the same area," she said.

??? Combat missiles heading to US found in passenger Aircraft in Serbia
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160313/1036225921/Combat-missiles-heading-US-found-passenger-Aircraft-Serbia.html

Serbian authorities have started an investigation into reports that two air-to-surface missiles, presumably destined for the US, were found in a passenger aircraft.

According to Serbian news agency Tanjug, Air Serbia, the largest air Serbian carrier, has confirmed that an undisclosed "package" was discovered by a sniffer dog aboard a passenger aircraft, "thanks to the strict measures of security control".

Earlier in the day, Serbian media reported two combat missiles, each 1.5m long were discovered aboard the aircraft in Belgrade Nikola Tesla airport. The missiles were reportedly packaged in a wooden case and provided with documents that listed Portland, Oregon as its destination.

The missiles are presumably AGM-114 Hellfire, a universal precision missile that can be fired from ground, maritime or air platform, including predator strike drones. Each missile costs $110,000 and is capable of covering up to 8 kilometers at a speed of 1.3 Mach.

Lavrov Says Russia Has Evidence of Turkish Troops in Syria
http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/breaking-lavrov-says-russia-has-evidence-turkish-troops-syria/ri13328

Erdogan is playing a dangerous game in northern Syria.

Reuters is reporting that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused Ankara of sending troops to Syria -- and that Moscow has proof:

Russia has evidence that Turkish troops are on Syrian territory, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview broadcast on Sunday, accusing Turkey of a "creeping expansion" on its border with Syria.

The comments by Lavrov are the latest confrontation between Moscow and Ankara, after Turkish jets shot down a Russian warplane near the Turkish-Syrian border in November.

"Turkey has started to declare it has a sovereign right to create some safety zones on Syrian territory," Lavrov told Russian television channel Ren-TV. "According to our data, they have already 'dug themselves in' several hundred meters from the border in Syria. ... It's a sort of creeping expansion."

Turkey's continued cross-border shelling of Syrian Kurdish positions has been condemned by both Washington and Moscow. But the presence of Turkish troops on Syrian territory would add a whole new dimension to Ankara's disregard for international law.

The presence of Turkish troops in northern Syria could also create numerous scenarios which could drastically escalate the conflict.

With Syria now trying to navigate a fragile ceasefire, Turkish troops are the last thing that the region needs.

US Embassy Confirms Got Warning About Terrorist Threat From Turkey

http://sputniknews.com/world/20160314/1036233653/ankara-turkey-blast-warning.html

The US embassy in Turkey said it learned from the Turkish authorities about a terrorist threat in Ankara before the Sunday blast and had time to warn the US citizens and Turkish employees of the embassy.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A car bomb exploded late Sunday at a bus stop near Ankara’s central Kizilay square, killing 37 people and injuring over 120.

"Last week, the US Embassy became aware of threat information through a Turkish government warning circulating in social media. After ‎confirming the warning with Turkish authorities, Embassy issued a notice to all American citizens in Ankara — both government employees and private citizens — and to Turkish employees of the US Embassy‎, as we routinely do when we learn of Turkish government information about threats," the embassy said in a statement on Sunday.

On Friday, the US embassy told the US citizens to avoid the Bahcelievler area of Ankara, about 3 miles from the Kizilay square, after receiving information regarding a potential terrorist plot to attack Turkish government buildings and housing located in the area.

The Sunday car bomb blast was the second terrorist attack to hit Ankara since the beginning of the year, after a military convoy was bombed in the Turkish capital in February, killing 30 people.

Three more Palestinians shot dead in occupied West Bank

http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2016/03/14/455596/Israelis-Palestinians-car-ramming-attack-alKhalil/

Israeli military forces have shot and killed three Palestinians in two separate alleged car ramming attacks in the southern part of the West Bank.

Israeli media reported that two Palestinians were fatally shot on Monday morning as they purportedly opened fire on and sought to run over Israeli troopers near the illegal Kiryat Arba settlement on the outskirts of al-Khalil (Hebron), located 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of al-Khalil (Jerusalem), the Palestinian Information Center reported.

An Israeli soldier was injured during the exchange of gunfire between the Palestinian pair and the Israeli forces.

Moments later, Israeli military forces shot and killed another Palestinian youth in the same area as he allegedly tried to carry out a similar car ramming attack. Two Israeli troopers sustained injuries in the second assault.

Meanwhile, a Palestinian teenage boy has sustained serious gunshot wounds during clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli military forces in the central part of the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian sources said violence broke out when Israeli soldiers stormed the village of al-Mazraa al-Gharbiya, which lies northwest of Ramallah, on Sunday evening.

Young Palestinian men hurled rocks and empty bottles at Israeli forces, who shot live rounds, rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas canisters and stun grenades at the youths in return.

Palestinian medical authorities said the teenage boy, identified as 14-year-old Adi Kamal Salamah, was struck in the chest.

Earlier, on Sunday, Israeli forces shot and injured an unnamed 16-year-old Palestinian boy as he was collecting gravel east of Gaza City.

Tensions have heightened in the occupied Palestinian territories due to Israel’s imposition in August 2015 of restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.

Nearly 200 Palestinians, including children and women, have lost their lives at the hands of Israeli forces since the beginning of last October.

At least 2,177 Palestinian children have been injured since the outbreak of the tensions, according to the United Nations. At least 41 Palestinian children have also been shot dead by Israeli forces, according to Defense for Children International-Palestine.

Three Palestinians attack Israelis in West Bank, shot dead: army

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-israel-palestinians-violence-idUSKCN0WG0EL

Three Palestinians carried out back-to-back gun and car-ramming attacks on Israelis near a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank on Monday and were shot dead by the army, it said.

Two of the Palestinians, armed with a handgun and an improvised machine-pistol, were killed after opening fire at civilians and soldiers who were waiting at a bus stop outside Kiryat Arba settlement, the army said. One soldier was wounded.

Minutes later, the third Palestinian rammed a car into an military vehicle at the scene and was shot, the army said. Two soldiers were hurt in the second incident, the army said, adding that two knives were found on the motorist's body.

Since October, Palestinian street attacks have killed 28 Israelis and two U.S. citizens. Israeli forces have killed at least 184 Palestinians, 124 of whom Israel says were assailants. Most others were shot dead during violent protests.

The surge in violence has been partly fueled by Palestinian frustration over the collapse of U.S.-sponsored peace talks in 2014, the growth of Jewish settlements on land they seek for a future state, and Islamist calls for the destruction of Israel.

Bomb-sniffing dog discovers 2 Hellfire missiles bound for Portland
http://www.oregonlive.com/today/index.ssf/2016/03/bomb-sniffing_dog_discovers_2.html

BELGRADE, Serbia — Serbia's authorities are investigating reports that a cargo package bound for Portland contained two missiles with explosive warheads on a passenger flight from Lebanon.

N1 television said the package with two guided armor-piercing missiles was discovered Saturday by a sniffer dog after an Air Serbia flight from Beirut landed at a Belgrade airport.

Serbian media say documents listed the final destination for the AGM-114 Hellfire missiles as Portland. The American-made projectiles can be fired from air, sea or ground platforms against multiple targets.

The Serbian state news agency Tanjug reported that the missiles had been packed in wooden coffins and unloaded at the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, where they were inspected by bomb-sniffing dogs.

This type of missile was originally designed to be fired from a helicopter and was named Helicopter Launched, Fire and Forget Missile -- later shortened to Hellfire.

The AGM-114 model is manufactured by Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Northrup Grumman. It weighs about 100 pounds and costs about $110,000 apiece. Most models use laser to home in on their targets, although one version of the AGM-114 relies on radar.

The FBI in Portland said it is looking into the reports.

"We don't have any information on that yet," Jennifer Adams, an FBI spokeswoman, said Sunday afternoon.

N1 reported Sunday that Air Serbia is helping in the investigation. The Serbian flag carrier says "security and safety are the main priorities for Air Serbia."

Syrian PM’s comments on Assad disruptive to peace: Kerry
http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2016/03/13/455555/Muallem-Kerry-Syria-Daesh-Assad/

US Secretary of State John Kerry has slammed as “disruptive to peace” remarks by his Syrian counterpart who has described President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster as a “red line.”

Speaking after talks with European allies in Paris on Sunday, Kerry said Walid Muallem was “clearly trying to disrupt the process... (he was) clearly trying to send a message of deterrence to others.”

“But the fact is (Assad’s) strongest sponsors, Russia and Iran, have both adopted... an approach which dictates that there must be a political transition and that we must have a presidential election at some time,” Kerry said on the eve of a new round of peace talks in Geneva.

Previous talks collapsed in February, after the so-called High Negotiations Committee (HNC), which is backed by Saudi Arabia, insisted on Assad’s removal as a prerequisite for any peace process.

Muallem told a Damascus news conference on Saturday that “we will not talk with anyone who wants to discuss the presidency... Bashar al-Assad is a red line.”

“If they continue with this approach, there’s no reason for them to come to Geneva,” he asserted.

Russia, Syria 'Absolutely Opposed' to Introducing Federal Gov't in Damascus
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13941223000594

Neither Moscow nor Damascus will back Syria's federalization, which is totally out of line with the concept of territorial integrity,
according to writer and media host Stephen Lendman.

In an interview with Sputnik, writer and media host Stephen Lendman ruled out the idea of Moscow and Damascus supporting the federalization of Syria, which he said is fully out of sync with the principle of territorial integrity.

His remarks came ahead of the beginning of a new round of peace talks between the Syrian government and the opposition, where the possible federalization of Syria is expected to be high on the agenda. The talks are scheduled for March 14.

"I think Russia and Syria are absolutely opposed to this. I cannot imagine Moscow or Damascus will support federal division of Syria," Lendman said.

He remained downbeat about the future of the Geneva peace talks, which he said are very unlikely to resolve the Syrian crisis.

The only way to do that is to cut support to terrorist groups, which are sponsored by the United States and Saudi Arabia, according to Lendman.

An Alliance Against US Hegemony: Russia, China Begin 'Coordinating' Foreign Policy

http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/alliance-against-us-hegemony-russia-china-begin-coordinating-foreign-policy/ri13345

The economic partnership between Russia and China is rapidly developing into a political and military alliance against US ambitions in Asia

We reported yesterday that China has become the first foreign buyer of Russia's most advanced air defense system, the S-400, and noted how the deal is consistent with growing military and political ties between the two countries.

Moscow clearly sees Beijing as a long-term ally if it's willing to provide China with its best military hardware.

If the S-400 deal isn't persuasive enough though, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's comments during his recent visit to Moscow should remove all doubt regarding the China-Russia alliance:

“China-Russia cooperation is not confined to bilateral levels, instead, the two countries have been coordinating and playing active roles in a number of international issues,” Wang said on Friday.

The two countries, as permanent members of the UN Security Council and major emerging economies, have held similar positions on the Syrian crisis, as well as negotiations at the WTO and IMF.

“As each other’s most important and prioritized partners, China and Russia are developing the comprehensive strategic coordination as a strategic principle, rather than any expediency,” the Chinese Foreign Minister added.

This is an incredible statement, and is most likely causing mass panic at the Pentagon. China and Russia are working together on "strategic coordination" regarding "a number of international issues". This is how NATO talks, minus the acronym.

While Yi cites the conflict in Syria as an example of "similar positions" between Moscow and Beijing, we suspect that China realizes it will need help to keep the US out of its sphere of influence. Together, Russia and China are now protesting US plans to deploy new missile defense systems in South Korea. And as the US continues to antagonize China in the South China Sea, Beijing sees Russia as a political and military partner against further western ambitions in Asia.

Let's be clear, though: China is the world's largest (or second largest, depending on the source) economy. Russia falls somewhere in the 7th-9th largest range. As such, many commentators have argued that China does not see Russia as an equal, and we think this view has merit.

And while China may very well view Russia as its "little brother", we don't think this relationship is at all exploitive. Yes, China was a big winner of the Ukraine crisis, allowing Beijing to ink extremely favorable energy deals with Russia: But one can hardly expect China to be altruistic. With the US as a major threat to both nations, it's hard to believe that China is taking Russia for a ride.

Which brings us back to the S-400 deal: China wants military deterrence from US encroachment -- something that Russia specializes in.

Yes, China wears the "economic pants" in this relationship, but Russia more than compensates with its advanced military capabilities and incredible potential for economic growth -- which China is heavily invested in. And as BRICS continues to develop, as well as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Eurasian Economic Union, we predict that China will gradually come to see Russia as an economic equal.

True, China and Russia don't have joint military bases spanning the globe, but NATO is hardly a model for an effective defensive alliance.

The China-Russia alliance against US hegemony: Finally, something to drink to.

Iran FM defends right to use missiles for defense

http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2016/03/14/455725/Iran-New-Zealand-radio-Zarif-missiles/

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has defended the country's right to use ballistic missiles, saying Iran's missiles are a means of defense.

"We spent a fraction of any other country in the region on defense, and missiles are a means of defense that we require," he said in an interview with Radio New Zealand.

He added that the missile tests did not violate a nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), clinched by Iran and the P5+1 countries – the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany – on July 14, 2015.

Zarif said the missile launches were not against the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that endorsed the nuclear agreement.

Resolution 2231 (2015) provides for the termination of the provisions of previous Security Council resolutions on the Iranian nuclear program and establishes specific restrictions that apply to all states without exception.

The resolution calls upon Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.

The United States claims the tests violated the United Nations resolution and is pushing for UN Security Council action on Iran's recent ballistic missile tests.

“We stated when the nuclear deal was approved by the Security Council and during the course of nuclear discussions that we will continue with our defense capabilities and that these defense capabilities have nothing to do with nuclear weapons,” Zarif said.
He emphasized that the missiles were not designed to carry nuclear warheads and said Iran has “provided the best guarantee” that it would never develop nuclear weapons.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) successfully test-fired two more ballistic missiles on March 9 as part of military drills to assess the IRGC's capabilities. The missiles dubbed Qadr-H and Qadr-F were fired during large-scale drills, code-named Eqtedar-e-Velayat.

On March 8, Iran fired another ballistic missile called Qiam from silo-based launchers in different locations across the country.

After Iran and the P5+1 group started to implement the JCPOA on January 16, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the Security Council and the US were lifted. Iran, in return, has put some limitations on its nuclear activities.

Moscow has no information that Iranian missiles are capable of carrying nuclear warheads

http://tass.ru/en/politics/862256

According to Russia's Ambassador to the UN, the UN SC will refer this issue to a special committee tasked to monitor the implementation of resolution 2231 in support to the Iranian nuclear deal

UNITED NATIONS, March 14. /TASS/. Russia has no information that the middle-range ballistic missiles launched by Iran are capable of carrying nuclear warheads, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said on Monday.

"Russia has no information that they are designed in a way to carry nuclear weapons," he said.

He reiterated that Moscow doesn’t consider Iran’s launches as violations of resolution 2231 as it provides for no direct ban on such activities but only calls on Teheran to refrain from it. Apart from that, in his words, the resolution speaks about missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

The Russian diplomat said the United Nations Security Council will refer this issue to a special committee tasked to monitor the implementation of resolution 2231 in support to the Iranian nuclear deal. "It is necessary to find out whether these missiles are capable of carrying nuclear weapons. If there is proof that these missiles can carry nuclear weapons, it will be possible to say that they (the Iranians) have disregarded this concrete call of resolution 2231," Churkin said.

"The most important thing" about today’s discussion at the United Nations Security Council, in his words, was the fact that the members of the Security Council agreed that "this issue has nothing to do with the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action" on the Iranian nuclear deal. The Russian diplomat reminded that last year Moscow initiated a convention on a universal ban on middle-range ballistic missile launches but this initiative found no support.

Sepah News, an official online news site of Iran's Sepah (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), said on March 8 that Iran launched several ballistic missiles as part of the military space force drills. The U.S. Department of State said shortly after that if these reports are verified it will draw United Nations Security Council’s attention to this launch.

US to Continue Pushing for UNSC Response on Iran Missile Tests

http://sputniknews.com/world/20160314/1036275568/us-iran-unsc-missile-tests.html

US envoy to the United Nations Samantha Power said that Washington will continue to push the UN Security Council to assess Iran's recent ballistic tests.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States will keep on pressing to obtain a response by the UN Security Council on the issue of Iran’s ballistic missile tests, US envoy to the United Nations Samantha Power told reporters following consultations on Iran.

"We will continue to push in the Security Council in the [Resolution] 2231 format, bring forward the technical information — that Iran itself has made public — showing that the technology they used is inherently capable of delivering nuclear weapons and thus inherently defying Resolution 2231," Power said.

Power claimed the launches violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which calls on Iran not to engage in launching ballistic missiles that can be designed to carry and deliver nuclear warheads.

She noted that the ballistic missiles Iran recently tested Iran's recent ballistic testswere designed to be capable of delivering nuclear warheads.

"This merits a [Security] Council response. The Council needs to take its responsibility and Russia seems to be lawyering its way to look for reasons not to act rather than stepping up and being prepared to shoulder our collective responsibility," Power maintained.

Definitely a development I look forward to watching unfold.

‘No change of course’: Merkel stays firm on refugee policy despite anti-migrant AfD election success

https://www.rt.com/news/335558-merkel-afd-germany-elections/

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has vowed to keep her course on the refugee crisis despite suffering defeats in two out of three states in major regional elections, in which a surprisingly large number of voters turned to the anti-migrant AfD party.

Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) lost in two states it had placed its hopes on, including Baden-Wuerttemberg, a traditional conservative stronghold of the party. The German media were quick to dub the outcome of the elections a “day of horror for Merkel” and “Black Sunday for the CDU.” The elections were largely regarded as a referendum on Merkel's open-door policy.

Yet, following a night of mixed fortunes, Chancellor Merkel stood firm on her liberal refugee policy, meeting with the three main candidates for her party in Berlin on Monday and making clear that despite election results marking a “difficult day for the CDU,” she won't change her course, convinced there has to be a European solution to the migration crisis.

“I am firmly convinced, and that wasn't questioned today, that we need a European solution and that this solution needs time,” the chancellor stated.

Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, confirmed the decision, saying that “the federal government will stay on its refugee policy course, fully determined, at home and abroad.”

Seibert added that Merkel plans to continue with her strategy of beefing-up security of Europe’s external borders, as well as working on the deal with Turkey to reduce the inflow of asylum seekers.

"The goal must be a common, sustainable European solution that leads to a tangible reduction of the number of refugees in all [EU] member states," Seibert said, as stated by the AFP.

Merkel’s fellow party members say it’s hardly wise for her to change her stance now, especially as the vote also showed there is no obvious successor to the chancellor. “It would be wrong to bring about a change of course [on migrants] now,” Germany's European commissioner Guenther Oettinger, a member of Christian Democrats, told the Funke newspaper.

Right-wing AfD makes gains

The dismal result for Merkel’s party amounted to a resounding success for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), a party only founded three years ago, but which has been gaining in popularity since the migrant crisis enveloped the EU in 2015.

With Sunday’s votes counted, the AfD now has seats in half of Germany's 16 state legislatures and has its sights set on entering the national parliament in elections expected late next year.

Following her party's success, AfD chief Frauke Petry told RT that the results were “even better” than anticipated, and that the country “needs” her party.

“We have fundamental problems in Germany that led to this election result. In the months to come we’ll show that the AfD needs to be here, that Germany needs a new alternative – and that’s us,” she said.

After a record 1.1 million asylum seekers arrived in the country in 2015 alone, many Germans are worried about what will happen to their homeland with these numbers of newcomers. The mass assaults in the German city of Cologne on New Year’s Eve resulted in widespread outrage over the current refugee stance, with 81 percent of Germans claiming that the migrant crisis is “out of control” under Merkel’s rule.

AfD member Hugh Bronson says his party’s success underlines an increasing unhappiness with the current situation in the country: “We [the AfD] have the right answers for the questions the people ask. Merkel’s so-called refugee policy, which in my view is a migration policy, has not been liked by a lot of people. She doesn’t inform the people – she’s just ruling over their heads […] these three local elections were also a referendum about Merkel’s policy – and it’s a clear and decisive ‘no’.”

Another representative of the alternatives, Boris Preckwitz, claims Merkel’s current stance lacks support not just in her country, but in Europe as a whole: “We do not believe in what Merkel is trying to sell as the ‘European solution’. This is something where she is very isolated right now, if you look at the reactions of the other European countries, you see that basically she doesn’t have any other allies or any other countries that go along with her.”

Europe's Faustian Pact with the Sultan

http://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2016/03/14/europes-faustian-pact-with-the-sultan.html

Anyone who haggled about the price of a carpet in a Turkish bazaar knows these guys are more reptilian than Henry Kissinger. They always get what they want by letting you leave with the impression you got what you want for a price way higher than you were initially inclined to pay.

Cue to a bunch of clueless European tourists haggling about a refugee deal with carpet bazaar ace Ahmet Davutoglu – Turkey’s Prime Minister and grand vizier of Sultan Erdogan. Much more than clinching a sleazy deal, the EU may end up selling what’s left of its allegedly humanitarian and democratic «principles», a.k.a. soul, to the carpet man. Did neither of these Eurocrats ever read Goethe’s Faust?

So let’s recap what the EU will get from Ankara’s masterful extortion racket. Instead of paying 3 billion euros for the refugee «carpet», it will pay 6.6 billion euros. It will facilitate visa-free travel for what’s left of the Schengen space to 75 million Turks. It will accelerate the bureaucratic road map for Turkish pre-accession to the EU. And it will comply with Ankara’s demand that for every Syrian re-expelled from Greece back to Turkey – over 2,000 arrive everyday as we speak – one Turk will be allowed to settle in the EU’s austerity purgatory.

This is what the Mob usually dubs «an offer you can’t refuse».

A bunch of European tourists

The Eurocrats thought they had a deal – part of the so-called EU-Turkey Action Plan – before a fateful Brussels summit early in the week, on March 7. EU – and mostly German – absolute desperation was already set in stone; without a deal with Ankara the alternative is the collapse of Schengen (which has already happened anyway) and the erosion of public trust in the EU’s institutions (also already happened).

In Chancellor Merkel’s words, because of the war in Syria and the «geostrategic» situation, a deal with Turkey is «absolutely in Europe’s interest». European Commission President, devious operator Jean-Claude Juncker, added, «this is a real game-changer».

Well, it was a game-changer for the Turks, for sure. Ankara was so dismissive of that bunch of sissy European tourists they raided Zaman, the country’s largest newspaper, took it over, tear gas included, turned it into a pro-AKP rag, and got away with it. Sanctions? That’s for Syria – and Iran. Turkey smashes a newspaper and is rewarded with negotiations on turbo mode for EU membership. So much for «press freedom» and an independent judiciary.

Behaving as absolutely lousy students of history, the Eurocrats were convinced the Sultan and his vizier would take the initial deal because they badly needed EU help in their self-created, nasty confrontation with Russia; extra support along the Turkish-Syrian border (the Sultan’s famous «safe zone» dream); and would be further mollified by NATO ships being used for coast guard patrols.

But then the carpet man pulled a master gambit, and invited his top customer for dinner.

Picture wily Davutoglu running rings around Merkel at the Turkish embassy in Brussels on Sunday evening, March 6. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte – holding the rotating EU presidency – was the other invited tourist.

Davutoglu unrolled a magic carpet ride. Nothing, absolutely nothing that had been discussed for weeks applied anymore. Ankara had a new, much more elaborate «offer you can’t refuse», and the EU summit was scheduled for the day after.

The only thing left for a poor, livid Chancellor was to wake up early on Monday and try to convince everybody else on short notice this was a steal. All hell predictably broke loose. Delegations from quite a few nations openly blamed the Chancellor’s naiveté. In the end there was no consensus, just the Chancellor meekly, vaguely promising that a deal was near.

Grapes of Wrath, the Balkan remix

Brussels has up to the end of next week to seal the deal, during another EU summit. It will be a wild ride. This thing is set to open a can of legal worms/juridical nightmares.

To start with, the «principled» EU may be facing some sort of mass deportation of refugees to countries where they most certainly will enjoy shaky legal protection. So count on EU lawyers to find a loophole; they will elevate Turkey to the status of a «safe third country». Amnesty International is already furious – but who cares?

The one-refugee-for-one-Turk exchange is even more slippery – and there are no loopholes. Only a miracle from Valhalla will convince, among others, the Baltic nations, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Slovenia to accept further refugee relocation inside their own borders. The Balkan Route for all practical purposes went six feet under when Slovenia closed it down. What is Berlin to do? Reopen it with a blitzkrieg?

Moreover, only a miracle from Zeus will convince Greece as well as Cyprus – not to mention France and Italy – that opening the EU doors to Turkey is the right price to pay to ease the crisis.

So assuming a deal is clinched it will open yet another chapter in one of the great tragedies of our time; next it will be a Grapes of Wrath scenario, lost souls plying the Balkan Route – including many families – fighting with their lives not to be deported back to Turkey.

And another «mystery» will remain unsolved; how this mass of refugees got there in the first place.

First they had to sneak around western Turkey – a highly indented coast, with few major cities and only a few local bus lines – on their way to a smatter of Greek islands, mostly Mytilini and Kos but also Chios and Kastellorizo. They would have traveled more than 1000 kilometers from the Turkish-Syrian border – where many had been languishing.

They left because Ankara told them to. They may have even had enjoyed direct and indirect access to some Ankara «help» to get on bus after bus after bus. Picture the Sultan’s network shipping their massive overland blackmail cargo by bus, delivered right on the doorstep of smuggling rings with the right connections, ready to ferry them across the Aegean to Greece.

Talk about a precious cargo. And this cargo is about to make Ankara handsomely profit to the tune of 6.6 billion – plus immense fringe benefits. And still those sorry Eurocrat tourists believe they are clinching the deal of the century; the «carpet» they are taking home is as rotten as they come.

Well I have to say I am totally shocked if Putin/Russia is truly pulling out of Syria. Especially with all the hype about armies amassing on Syria's borders, with US/Nato refusing to give up on dividing Syria - and of course the basis Israel plan from the outset.

What on earth can he know? Perhaps he refuses to involve Russia in what may become a huge explosion of warfare all around the M.E.?
Everything seems to have been hotting up that way, even with Israel beating the drums of invasion of Lebanon, and Turkey going beserk as usual etc etc

OR

Has there been some secret deal/common sense instilled into US/Nato behind the scenes - knowing they are playing with fire?

BUT then, quite rightly as we would assume - that then leaves them carte blanche to carve up and massacre everywhere and everyone ad infinitum. Like apart from Russia and her allies WHO CAN we trust in this scenario??

OR

Is he just, maybe, going to let them all ultimately kill each other through greed and different agendas?

My mind is just - naturally - working overtime, and I am sure I am not alone here. In what purports to us on the sidelines to be a very premature decision. Oooooph C's - please, the suspense is killing me - and I don't hope it will last!!!

Could this even be a political bluff? When could we ever rely on anything being rational (except Russia!).?

Is help on the way? We do know that environmental issues are going to prevent the psycho's getting their way. Perhaps this is the reason Putin et al are getting their ducks in a row pretty fast and getting the ***** outta there? Then that in itself is a good hint to hunker down fast.

I doubt this has any economic elements though as I cannot conceive Syria etc is anywhere near to that. Except that if the blow is coming then Russia et al feel they will have enough dealing with that to not over-stretch themselves in what may become a fools game if it goes south in Syria?

Are y'all scratching your heads like I am? What part of the puzzle did we not see coming down the pipe?
Mystified!! :D :cool2:
What will be will be - the 'explanation' if Putin is allowed to elaborate will be very telling for sure - a change of reality even?

Putin appears to be several chess moves ahead of everybody. We can now begin to figure out, what this tactical-strategic step means.
By pulling the troops out of Syria Putin is keeping Russia from being permanently entangled in a foreign conflict, he is allowing the Syrian government to take full control over their affairs, he is showing how much confidence he has in the Syrian ceasefire and the Syrian government, and he's starting it on the Ides of March.
It seems to me that Putin is indeed playing several moves ahead.

Russia must be careful to use only the right amount of force in this conflict, not too little, not too much. By leaving the battle, Syria will be able to directly deal with the Turkish problem without restraint. Syria is a small country and may use any amount of force when fighting an invasion from Turkey, or anywhere else. If Russia leaves the air defense system in Syria, they can start using it directly and "at will".

It seems to me that with Russia no longer in Syria, Erdogan will think he can do whatever he wishes, and he will do something really stupid. It will be so stupid that the rest of the world will immediately see him for the monster he is, and will take sides with Syria. I think this is part of the equation.

Or maybe Putin is simply acting from a position of decency and truth to his word. They said they'd go in and help Syria fight terrorists. If Russia thinks that objective is largely accomplished, then there's no monkey business - they just move out as they said they would. Then again, I'm sure they considered very carefully what the other side would or could do on both the scenarios of them staying or leaving, and based on that, they chose to leave now for some good reason.

On the other hand, the NATO people must be having some hysterical reactions not knowing how to interpret the latest move of "the new Hitler". I can picture them making phone calls to each other and running from office to office. Because they only understand open aggression or backstabbing, so they probably can't decide which one this is.

Well I have to say I am totally shocked if Putin/Russia is truly pulling out of Syria.

Are you aware that from the outset, he made a remark indicating that it might take 6 months or so to accomplished Russia's aims in Syria. (I can't locate the exact source but my recollection is clear.)

In any conflict, getting out is at least as important (and probably more so) than getting in. I have confidence in this man's farsightedness. And I do not see him as a "cut and quit" type of leader.

Significantly, the airbase stays. And the naval base as well. Any future ramp up (if necessary) is not that hard. (Adversaries -- Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and others know this well. And cruise missiles can come out of anywhere ... as had been demonstrated.)

To be where we are today, was simply unimaginable six months ago. The trend in Syria, has been decisively redirected ... with good chances of a generally acceptable outcome.

But I could be wrong.

FWIW.

I think, this move-out of Russian forces could be 'The Test' - during which western powers can make The Big Mistake: to finally reveal their rotten sickness before the whole world, incorrigible by any damage control. If the US answers with the wrong move, like commanding Turkey to invade Syria, Putin will proceed to perform the checkmate.

Checkmate move speculations for the future:
a.) Assad will point out that several UN agreements has been violated by the Turkey invasion or any major bad response move by the West and Assad will then proceed to ask Russia to please help stop the invading force and restore peace once and for all. In which case Russia will now move in a totally different force lightning fast, prepared exactly for such cases, see major Russian military exercises in past.

b.) Putin will reveal breaking-news secrets about US involvement in organizing terror acts, withheld so far respecting undisclosed 'agreements'

c.) Cruise Missiles shower, secret Russian weapon activation satellite based or permission to deploy undetectable UFO-tech-based drones or piloted super-fast, top-secret prototype crafts compared to which current fighter-jets are like "Neanderthal tech".

I'm out of ideas..
