Russia Begins Operations in Syria: End Game for the US Empire?
I think so too - Putin being the master strategist he is; is throwing the "first punch" again. I think the Empire probably has been preparing the groundwork for a very elaborate trap for Russia; and here again Putin is being one step ahead them. Interesting timing as well coming right after bombing in Ankara.
Besides the trap being laid out.

If Russia’s partly retreat was part of the negotiations? If this can bring all the parties together. It will mean they will unite against ISIS + AL Nusra etc together with the SAA. Not only that. Now them being together with Assad it is their right as an ally of Russia to also ask for Russian intervention.

It shows 2 things :

1. Russia is sincere with the peace negations. (Trustworthy partner)

2. Russia is sincere in helping all parties who seek peace to defeat ISIS/ Al Nusra but only if they so desire. This can only happen if they ask for Russian support.

As soon as the negotiations are finished. Russia may say. Now that we are all together. Ask, and we will crush your enemies. We are also your partner and ally now.

Just imagine the news. ''Moderate opposition joins Assad and asks for Russian intervention''

It will show Russia not only supports Assad. But all who wants to take part of the peace process. Bringing Syrian unity closer than it was before. But before that can happen. Russia has to proof to them that they are trustworthy. Hence the partly withdrawn. If Russia is fighting for all the parties who want peace in Syria. Than they have to support Syria not only on behalf of Assad request. But all who have a place at the table. This will also show that Russia is seeing them as equals.

Funny how the Russian withdrawal comes as a such a surprise (including myself in there!). Apparently right after starting the campaign, Putin told a reporter the op would last until March. Can't find that report, but I did find this one:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34613514

The air strikes would be time-limited, officials told us - some have suggested three to four months, some six months - but not open-ended.

So even the end-time looks like it was planned. (Not that the Russians would be totally rigid about it, just that they had a solid plan and probably knew how things would go in the next 4-6 months.) What's amazing is how all the 'external' events lined up!

I'm wondering if the reason so many of us were surprised because, in the West, we are used to our "leaders" lying all of the time and nothing they say ever happens? We're not used to a leader stating something and, then, following through with it. So we are all left with our lower jaws flapping in the wind when a leader actually follows through with something he earlier said he was going to do.

This is perhaps the most sensible and accurate write up I've seen so far.

http://www.sott.net/article/314513-Stunning-achievement-Putin-saved-Syria-from-Western-backed-terrorists-and-regime-change

The only thing missing, is the omission of that elephant in the room. (The one near the apex of the Consortium.) Understanding that element, gives us a truer perspective to the underlying motive -- of all regime changes in the Middle East.

And it is that element ... that presents the ultimate challenge to Putin and his team I think. And note Putin's dealings, are exceedingly careful and circumspect in that regard. (I also think they are beginning to "respect" him in turn. As he seems to have divine guidance ... and protection.)

But I could be wrong.

FWIW.

I too was surprised of the timing.

Meanwhile things in Ukraine is heating up, so taking the heat off in Syria, both militarily and politically, makes Russia better prepared for other flash points that could arise and of which they are likely aware. Kudos to the Russian leadership for timing and for setting the opposition on the back seat by being a few strategic steps ahead of them, and also for showing how to respect international law and the sovereignty of nations.

I also have wondered about that for a while now. What Putin and staff accomplished since they came into power over 15 years ago is simply, stunningly and truthfully amazing. Not only in russia but in regards to setting a higher example for the rest of the decent world as well through it. The sheer odds, "coincidences", luck and circumstances they were gifted during that time which helped them to achieve what they did, in such a world nonetheless, is almost uncanny.

What are the odds that something that amazing can work so comparatively good in the biggest country on earth today, for over 15 years now so that all the right pieces seem to fall into place for them over and over again at the right time, without being killed by the empire? To explain that without any kind of divine guidance and/or protection seems impossible to me.

I guess the C's were right when they said when you truly strive higher goals with true faith, that the universe will provide you with everything you need and things falling into place for you.

Thanks for that video share, Pashalis. To me, using the examples that he used, Putin points out quite clearly how those intellectuals lack a basic understanding of how to interpret the reality that's in your face and on the ground.

And those remarks about freedom of speech and being offended... priceless!
[...]As he seems to have divine guidance ... and protection.[...]
I think so to. Putin chanced the timeline and there was nothing 4STS could do about it:
I guess the C's were right when they said when you truly strive higher goals with true faith, that the universe will provide you with everything you need and things falling into place for you.
Putin seems to agree:
You must never cling to things, nor to failure nor to success. If you start thinking about yourself as important and special, it is the beginning of your fall. But if you stay with people, if you think about their interests and make it your mission to make their lives better, God will remain on your side.

Meanwhile things in Ukraine is heating up, so taking the heat off in Syria, both militarily and politically, makes Russia better prepared for other flash points that could arise and of which they are likely aware
Russian planning is superb. They said they would only need a few months to stabilize the situation and they have. Which makes me confident that the Russian have what it takes to take on Erdogan Army without tactical nuclear weapons even when outnumbered in Syria.

Russia Restoring International Law - One Withdrawal at a Time
http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/03/russia-restoring-international-law-one.html

Much is written today about the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria. Patriots are cheering, and so are Russia's enemies ("Putin backed off"). However, no one focused on the beginning of Putin's statement during the meeting with Shoigu and Lavrov. Although usually the beginning of the statement is often the most important message.

So, what did the President say? Here are his very first words:

"In Syria Russia has created a small but highly effective military grouping in a short time".

In principle, Putin could well conclude with that. A more than transparent hint to all the Obamas, Hollands, Erdogans and other Poroshenko's.

However, Vladimir Vladimirovich, who personally mingled with such characters, is well aware of the limited intelligence of Western leaders and their puppets. Therefore he had to expand his thesis in more detail.

"Furthermore - with various forces and means! Including space exploration. Unmanned aerial vehicles. Combat and attack systems of fighter and attack aviation. These are Navy forces, which used the most advanced weapons from the waters of the two seas: Mediterranean and Caspian. From surface ships as well as submarines.”

And so no one has any illusions about a possible response to all of this from the air, for example, by NATO forces, Putin openly said:

"We created a powerful air defense system using the most modern S-400 missiles."

Summarizing, the President said that "the really effective work of our military has created the conditions for the beginning of a peace process."

I.e. the mission of creating conditions for negotiation process in the SAR is completed. Moreover, Putin said: "Overall completed ...". And the key to that completion will be the operation of two military bases in Syria: naval and aviation.

Now lets remember that the President began his short speech immediately after the words of Sergey Lavrov that the UN Security Council has twice formally confirmed its commitment to a peace settlement of the Syrian issue. That representatives of all stakeholders gathered in Geneva, and the difficult negotiations will be conducted. That a committee including all the interested countries is working on resolving the crisis in Syria.

Finally, it is worth recalling Putin's speech at the UN Security Council, where he announced that a unipolar world is unacceptable and detrimental. Where Putin stressed the UN's role in manifesting and a guaranteeing compliance with accepted global norms on conflict resolution between states.

It turns out that since September 2015 when Russia at the request of Syrian government started bombing American mercenary gangs, the President of Russian Federation gently pushed the UN Security Council to agree with his declaration. And forced the Security Council to act in the spirit of a peaceful settlement.

As so the United States does not prevent the UN Security Council from conducting a peaceful policy, as before (see Iraq, Libya, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, etc.), Putin made a guarantee: see his quotes above.

So everything is on course. Russia has successfully played the first act of returning to the norms of international law. Let the international partners scratch their heads: where will the Russian submarines appear next? In the Caribbean, the Gulf of Tonkin or... in the Ukrainian steppes ...

Iran Seeks Russian Help to Destroy Drug Labs in Afghanistan
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13941226000715

Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli in a meeting with Director of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) Viktor Ivanov called for joint efforts in the war on drug trafficking and destruction of labs in Afghanistan.

"With Russia's help we can destory the drug trafficking networks and production labs in Afghanistan," Rahmani Fazli said in Vienna.

He pointed to the Tehran-Moscow cooperation in the ongoing anti-drug campaign, and said, "Bilateral relations in the campaign against drugs is going well, both on regional and international levels."

Ivanov, for his part, lauded the extensive cooperation between the two neighbors in the reigon and beyond, particularly in the campaign against narcotics, and said there should be greater cooperation in this regard.

Last October, Advisor to the head of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service Nikolai Yugrashenkov had supported Iran's anti-drugs measures and vowed that Russia would carry out its duties effectively in the fight against narcotics trafficking by the help of Iran's cooperation.

Army General: Iran Has Evidence of Foreign Military Aid to ISIL
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13941226000792

Deputy Chief Liaison of the Iranian Army's Ground Force General Ali Arasteh said Tehran has documents that show the delivery of 75 vehicles loaded with weaponry to the ISIL terrorist group.

General Arasteh said on Wednesday some governments claim to be fighting ISIL, but at the same time supply the terrorist group with "37 vehicles and 38 trailers loaded with weapons and military equipment."

"We have the images and the documents to substantiate and we will make them public in due time," he added.

In relevant remarks in April, top commander of the Iranian Armed Forces said the US military planes are making regular flights to and from airports ISIL-controlled cities to supply the terrorist group with weapons, money and foodstuff.

"We have received reports that the US planes visit the ISIL(-controlled) airports," Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi told reporters on the sidelines of military parades held in Tehran to mark the Army Day.

"The US shouldn't supply weapons and money to ISIL and then apologizes and says that it has done a mistake. The Americans say that they want to confront the ISIL (but) we haven’t seen any practical measure but reconnaissance and surveillance operations," he added.

Predicting that a cruel wave of terrorism will sweep Europe, the US and all mankind in the near future, Firouzabadi said all the world people, including those in the US and Europe, should try to fight against terrorism in defense of the right of living instead of providing them with weapons and huge sums of money that has made ISIL the best paid militant and armed group in the world.

This is Why Putin is the Most Unpredictable Politician in the World
http://sputniknews.com/politics/20160316/1036405972/putin-syria-withdrawal.html

Two days have passed since President Vladimir Putin's surprise announcement that Russia would begin withdrawing the main part of its military forces from Syria. Volumes of analyses have already been written on the subject, but there's one important thing most of them seem to miss.

On Monday, Putin announced that the Russian air operation in Syria had largely achieved its objectives, and that Russia would begin a withdrawal of its main forces from the country.

"With the participation of the Russian military…the Syrian military and patriotic Syrian forces have been able to achieve a fundamental turnaround in the fight against international terrorism, and have taken the initiative in nearly all areas to create the conditions for the start of a peace process," Putin said, in a working meeting with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

Since then, volumes of analysis have been written, both in Russian and foreign media, on what the move really means.

For his part, Russian television journalist Vladimir Solovyov suggested that what many analysts have missed, and what they should go back and review, is the promise Putin made at the very beginning of Russia's air campaign.

In an interview with Solovyov recorded on October 10, Putin, asked how long the operation would last, offered an answer which some will find eerily prescient today.

The success of the Syrian army offensive, Putin said, "depends above all on the Syrian army itself and on the Syrian authorities. We cannot commit ourselves to more than is reasonable and have never done so. I said from the start that the active phase of our operations on Syrian soil will be limited in time to the Syrian army's offensive. Coming back to your earlier question, our task is to stabilize the legitimate government and establish conditions that will make it possible to look for political compromise."

With a Moscow-Washington brokered ceasefire in place, Syria's government stabilized and Daesh and Nusra Front terrorists on the run, it becomes instantly clear what the president meant when he said that Russia's objectives have been "generally fulfilled."

In other words, Solovyov wryly noted, "it's not by accident that Putin is called the most unpredictable politician in the world, because he constantly does what he says he is going to do."

Riyadh Opposition’s Threats to 'Kill Assad' Violate UNSC Resolutions

A threat made by one of the representatives of the Riyadh-formed Syrian opposition to kill President Bashar Assad is unacceptable, head of Damascus delegation to Geneva talks on the Syrian settlement Bashar Jaafari told Sputnik on Wednesday.

A threat made by one of the representatives of the Riyadh-formed Syrian opposition to kill President Bashar Assad violates a number of UN Security Council resolutions, head of Damascus delegation to Geneva talks on the Syrian settlement Bashar Jaafari told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"Yesterday, the person who represents Jaysh al-Islam made an irresponsible statement in which he threatened to kill the president of Syria. He was inciting to commit a terrorist act. This is a violation of the SC resolution 2253, 2299, 2278, 1989, 1924," Jaafari said.

On Tuesday, Mohammed Alloush, a member of Jaysh al-Islam, which is part of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) opposition group, made a statement in which he threatened to kill the Syrian leader.

Official photo displays strange object in Putin's office
http://www.pravdareport.com/society/stories/16-03-2016/133829-putin_office_kremlin-0/

The recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, at which it was ordered to withdraw troops from Syria, generated a curious discussion in Russia. Many people paid attention to a strange object on one of the photos of Putin's office. Users of social networks assumed that there was an ironing board depicted on the photo. It was later revealed, though, that the picture showed a completely different device.

The press service of the Russian president published official photos of Putin's meeting with the ministers on March 14. On one of the photos, Putin is seen sitting at table listening to Foreign Minister Lavrov.

A strange item, looking like a white ironing board, is seen behind Putin's back. The photo went viral on the Internet, and many started wondering why Putin needs an ironing board in his Kremlin office and why he did not hide it for such an important meeting.

A closer look at the device reveals that the board stands on small wheels and has curved handles on both sides - soemthing that ironing board do not have. It turned out that the "ironing board" was an air-disinfection screen. The bactericidal irradiator is used for disinfecting air and provides he highest level of air disinfection in indoor public places, such as, for example, hospitals.

A Kremlin source told the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper that there are no boards and no irons in Kremlin offices. "As for everything that concerns the decor of the office of the head of state, these things are strictly protocoled by the presidential administration. Every little thing that you can see there is not incidental, everything has its place, and the appearance of all items in the president's office is strictly coordinated with all these departments," the source told the publication.

The source also said that household items can never find themselves in Kremlin offices. "An ironing board, a vacuum cleaner, a mop and a bucket, even a duster - all these items are unauthorized, and therefore prohibitedfor Kremlin offices," said the source.

A Kremlin spokesman confirmed that the photo displayed a bactericidal irradiator. The device protects the president from pathogens when many visitors come to Putin's office for meetings. "In such cases, a bactericidal irradiator is an indispensable thing as it kills 90-99% of air-transmitted organisms in seconds. The device is completely safe for humans," the source also said.

According to the newspaper, there are several UV irradiators in the residence. Kremlin services usually purchase such devices along with shoe-cleaning machines that are installed at every entrance to the Kremlin.

It was also said that President Putin has his clothes pressed outside the Kremlin, at Federal State Unitary Enterprise President-Service laundry in Gorky-10. Shirts and suits are then delivered to the Kremlin, right to Putin's office.

Five Years Ago: The US-NATO-Israel Sponsored Al Qaeda Insurgency in Syria. Who Was Behind The 2011 “Protest Movement”?
http://www.globalresearch.ca/syria-who-is-behind-the-protest-movement-fabricating-a-pretext-for-a-us-nato-humanitarian-intervention/24591

By Prof Michel Chossudovsky

Author’s note - The war on Syria started five years ago in Daraa on the 17th of March 2011.

The following article (below) first published in May 2011 examines the inception of the jihadist terrorist insurgency.

It recounts the events of March 17-18, 2011 in Daraa, a small border town with Jordan.

Media reports have finally acknowledged that the so-called “protest movement” in Syria was instigated by Washington.

This was known and documented from the very inception of the Syrian crisis in March 2011.

It was not a protest movement, it was an armed insurgency integrated by US-Israeli and allied supported “jihadist” death squads?

From Day One, the Islamist “freedom fighters” were supported, trained and equipped by NATO and Turkey’s High Command. According to Israeli intelligence sources (Debka, August14, 2011):

NATO headquarters in Brussels and the Turkish high command are meanwhile drawing up plans for their first military step in Syria, which is to arm the rebels with weapons for combating the tanks and helicopters spearheading the Assad regime’s crackdown on dissent. … NATO strategists are thinking more in terms of pouring large quantities of anti-tank and anti-air rockets, mortars and heavy machine guns into the protest centers for beating back the government armored forces. (DEBKAfile, NATO to give rebels anti-tank weapons, August 14, 2011)

This initiative, which was also supported by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, involved a process of organized recruitment of thousands of jihadist “freedom fighters”, reminiscent of the enlistment of Mujahideen to wage the CIA’s jihad (holy war) in the heyday of the Soviet-Afghan war:

Also discussed in Brussels and Ankara, our sources report, is a campaign to enlist thousands of Muslim volunteers in Middle East countries and the Muslim world to fight alongside the Syrian rebels. The Turkish army would house these volunteers, train them and secure their passage into Syria. (Ibid, emphasis added)

These mercenaries were subsequently integrated into US and allied sponsored terrorist organizations including Al Nusrah and ISIS.

The Daraa “protest movement” on March 17-18 had all the appearances of a staged event involving covert support to Islamic terrorists by Mossad and/or Western intelligence.

Government sources pointed to the role of radical Salafist groups (supported by Israel).

In chorus, the Western media described the events in Daraa as a protest movement against Bashar Al Assad.

In a bitter irony, the deaths of policemen were higher than those of “demonstrators”.

In Daraa, roof top snipers were targeting both police and demonstrators.

Reading between the lines of Israeli and Lebanese news reports (which acknowledge the police deaths) a clearer picture of what happened in Daraa on March 17-18 had emerged. The Israel National News Report (which can not be accused of being biased in favor of Bashar al Assad) confirmed that:

“Seven police officers and at least four demonstrators in Syria have been killed in continuing violent clashes that erupted in the southern town of Daraa last Thursday. … and the Baath Party Headquarters and courthouse were torched, in renewed violence on Sunday. (Gavriel Queenann, Syria: Seven Police Killed, Buildings Torched in Protests, Israel National News, Arutz Sheva, March 21, 2011, emphasis added)

The Lebanese news report also acknowledged the killings of seven policemen in Daraa.

[They were killed] “during clashes between the security forces and protesters… They got killed trying to drive away protesters during demonstration in Dara’a”

The Lebanese Ya Libnan report quoting Al Jazeera also acknowledged that protesters had “burned the headquarters of the Baath Party and the court house in Dara’a” (emphasis added)

These news reports of the events in Daraa confirmed that from the very outset this was not a “peaceful protest” as claimed by the Western media.

Moreover, from an assessment of the initial casualty figures (Israel News), there were more policemen than “demonstrators” who were killed.

This is significant because it suggests that the police force may have initially been outnumbered by a well organized armed gang of professional killers.

What was clear from these initial reports is that many of the demonstrators were not demonstrators but terrorists involved in premeditated acts of killing and arson.

The title of the Israeli news report summarized what happened: Syria: Seven Police Killed, Buildings Torched in Protest

The US-NATO-Israel agenda consisted in supporting an Al Qaeda affiliated insurgency integrated by death squads and professional snipers. President Bashar al Assad is then to be blamed for killing his own people.

Does it Sound familiar?

The same “false flag” strategy of killing innocent civilians was used during the Ukraine Maidan protest movement. On February 20th, 2014, professional snipers were shooting at both demonstrators and policemen with a view to accusing president Viktor Yanukovych of “mass murder.”

It was subsequently revealed that these snipers were controlled by the opponents of president Yanukovych, who are now part of the coalition government.

The “humanitarian mandate” of the US and its allies is sustained by diabolical “false flag” attacks which consist in killing civilians with a view to breaking the legitimacy of governments which refuse to abide by the diktats of Washington and its allies.

London Mayor Calls for Obama to Mind His Own Business
http://www.mrctv.org/blog/

London Mayor Boris Johnson wrote an op-ed piece in The Telegraph concerning President Obama’s future visit to the U.K., where he'll attempt to persuade the British people to stay in the European Union (EU).

Needless to say, Johnson’s words were not complimentary.

In the lengthy statement, Johnson wrote:

Sometime in the next couple of months, we are told that President Obama himself is going to arrive in this country, like some deus ex machina, to pronounce on the matter. Air Force One will touch down; a lectern with the presidential seal will be erected. The British people will be told to be good to themselves, to do the right thing. We will be informed by our most important ally that it is in our interests to stay in the EU, no matter how flawed we may feel that organisation to be. Never mind the loss of sovereignty; never mind the expense and the bureaucracy and the uncontrolled immigration.

The op-ed came two weeks after U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron announced that a referendum will be held on June 23 of this year to determine whether Britain should stay in the EU.

Johnson went on to point out Obama's hypocrisy by explaining how Americans would never accept the restrictions being a part of the EU brings.

Think of NAFTA – the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement – that links the US with Canada and Mexico. Suppose it were constituted on the lines of the EU, with a commission and a parliament and a court of justice. Would the Americans knuckle under – to a NAFTA commission and parliament generating about half their domestic law? Would they submit to a NAFTA court of justice – supreme over all US institutions – and largely staffed by Mexicans and Canadians whom the people of the US could neither appoint nor remove? No way. The idea is laughable, and completely alien to American traditions. So why is it essential for Britain to comply with a system that the Americans would themselves reject out of hand? Is it not a blatant case of “Do as I say, but not as I do”?

He later continued:

In urging us to embed ourselves more deeply in the EU’s federalising structures, the Americans are urging us down a course they would never dream of going themselves. That is because they are a nation conceived in liberty. They sometimes seem to forget that we are quite fond of liberty, too.

A Drawdown Not a Withdrawal: Russians Will Keep Striking Al-Qaeda and ISIS in Syria

http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/drawdown-not-withdrawal-russians-will-keep-striking-al-qaeda-and-isis-syria/ri13406

The reduced Russian forces in Syria will keep waging a war on ISIS and Al Nusra

You've heard about the news that Putin ordered the bigger part of his Syria expeditionary force home, you've read the (correct) interpretations that this includes the actual strike aircraft, and you've seen images from the pilot's actual return to Russia. It all checks out. Russian strike element in Syria is going home.

That is not the entire story, however, because it turns out:

HMEIMIM, Syria, March 15 (TASS) - Russia’s aviation group in Syria will continue delivering strikes on facilities of terrorists, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Nikolay Pankov said on Tuesday.

"Certain positive results have been reached. A real chance has emerged to bring an end to the long-time conflict and violence. However, it is early to speak about the victory over terrorism now," Pankov said.

"Russia’s aviation group has the task to continue delivering strikes on the facilities of terrorists," he told an event marking the accomplishment of tasks in Syria by Russian forces.

...

Pankov reminded that the ceasefire, which came into effect in Syria on February 27, is not applied to the Islamic State and Jabhat an-Nusra "or other terrorist organizations designated by the UN Security Council."

The Russian Deputy Defense Ministry points out there is no truce in place with ISIS or the Al Qaeda affiliated Al Nusra Front and vows to keep delivering strikes against them. Also it is clear that he is not talking about long range strikes from Russian airfields or the Caspian or Mediterranean seas. It's clearly "Russia’s aviation group in Syria" that will continue its war.

It seems now we finally have the full story of the Russian "withdrawal". The withdrawal is real, but is partial. The emphasis will be on monitoring the truce as Russia hopes for a political solution, but meanwhile a reduced strike force will continue at it against ISIS and Al Nusra, albeit possibly at a much lesser intensity and with a lower profile.

In fact Russian aircraft are reportedly continuing to support the ongoing Syrian army offensive against ISIS in Palmyra.

Coupled with the explanation that Russia's land-based anti-aircraft systems are not part of the withdrawal this makes it clear the overall geo-strategic situation has not changed. That is to say that albeit the Damascus government will now enjoy less direct Russian assistance in fighting the jihadis on the ground, it has not been left to the mercy of a possible Turkish or Saudi invasion or strike. (Or a Western "no-fly zone" for that matter.)

Newest Russian Mi-28N & Ka-52 Helicopters Spotted in Syria

http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/03/newest-russian-mi-28n-ka-52-helicopters.html

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
16th March, 2016

The Ministry of Defense of Russia has transferred the latest combat helicopters Mi-28N and Ka-52 to Syria. This is evidenced by video recordings by the TV channel "Zvezda" and the agency Reuters, which was filmed at the Khmeimim airbase.

The Mi-28N helicopter is seen flying over the airbase at around 15 seconds in the video filmed by Reuters. Ka-52 is seen at the beginning of the "Zvezda" video in the background of the su-24 front-line bomber. Ka-52 is without blades, which probably suggests that it was only recently transferred to the base by military transport aircraft.

Previously, the Russian airforce used only the Mi-24 and Mi-35 military helicopters in Syria. At the same time, the Mi-28N, known as the "Night hunter", is used by the Iraq air force against terrorists.

President Vladimir Putin, on the evening of March 14th, gave the order to withdraw the basic part of Russian military contingent from Syria. According to the President, this is due to the fact that the military has completed almost all the tasks set beforehand.

Later, the Defense Ministry reported that the Russian aircraft will continue to strike terrorists in Syria. According to media reports, the front-line squadron of su-24 bombers will remain at the Khmeimim airbase, but also fighter jets and helicopters.

Russia deployed a group of aircraft and supporting units to Syria on the 30th September 2015, where the aircraft were involved in airstrikes on radical Islamist groups. The basis for this operation was an official request for military assistance by the President of Syria Bashar al-Assad.

Hmeimim group of Syrian opposition ready for direct talks with Syrian government

http://tass.ru/en/world/862997

The Hmeimim group of the Syrian opposition intends to prepare a new draft constitution, and they already have a program for overcoming the crisis

GENEVA, March 17. /TASS/. The Hmeimim group of the Syrian opposition is ready for direct contacts with representatives of the Syrian government at Geneva talks, the group’s leader Ilian Masaad told TASS on Thursday.

"We are ready to hold direct talsk," Masaad said. "We have held several meetings with representatives of the Syrian government in the unofficial format," he added noting that "there were never any official meetings."

Half of Syrians support Assad

According to Ilian Masaad, Syrian President Bashar Assad enjoys considerable support in the country, and calls for his resignation are destroying the country.

"Problems with current people from Riyadh [Syrian opposition group formed after the meeting in Riyadh] have been the same over the last five years. They say that Asad should go. But half of Syrians are with him. What are such calls doing? Destroying Syria," Masaad said.

"They think that the US army should come to help them kill Assad while we will get a car, a bureau and a presidential palace. But this option does not exist. It’s fake," he went on.

Elections should be held in order to end the war, Masaad said. "Assad is a Syrian, and he will decide on whether he will take part in the election or not. If he wants to run in the election - it is his right to do so," he added.

New parliamentary election should follow adoption of new Syrian constitution

The Hmeimim group of the Syrian opposition intends to prepare a new draft constitution, and they already have a program for overcoming the crisis which will be presented to UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

"We will present several documents [to de Mistura]," Masaad said.

"We have a program for overcoming this crisis. We have other projects as well. We are trying to decide now how to prepare a draft of the new democratic and secular Constitution that will be suitable for everyone," he added. "Without this, we will not stop the current insane bloodshed," Masaad noted.

The meeting between the Hmeimim group and de Mistura is planned for March 18.

"I am for total decentralization," Masaad said. "Authors of the federalization idea do not explain what they mean. How is it possible to divide Syria in three-four parts? There is something unclear in such proposals, and it is bad," he added.

Masaad noted that the main thing are not terms but their essence. "If someone wants to call it a federation, I have nothing against this," he said. "The main thing is that no one is talking about dividing the country. This means that the climate of war will persist forever," he added.

"Total decentralization is needed - apart from ministries of foreign affairs, defense, central bank, army. There are some spheres where it is impossible," Masaad said outlining his vision of Syria’s future administrative system.

The leader also pointed out that Syrian government’s plans to hold parliamentary election on April 13 do not cancel the need to hold them again after adopting a new constitution.

"The mandate of the parliament is running out, so the government has to hold election [on April 13 as previously announced by Damascus]. If there are no election, it will lose its legitimacy," Masaad said. "However, this does not change anything. When a new constitution is adopted, we will again have to go to ballot boxes," he added.

Masaad leads the delegation of internal Syrian opposition at Geneva talks which became known as the Hmeimim group.

According to TASS, the Hmeimim group includes doctors, lawyers, engineers, journalists, social activities representing the Syrian organization "National Action," "Democratic Action in Syria" movement, "Secular Democracy" organization, "National Youth" and "Syrian Fatherland" parties, as well as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and others.

Ilian Masaad is Doctor of Laws, general secretary of the "National Conference" party that supports unified secular state, democratic activist, official representative of the "Syrian National Workers’ Party.

Nine settlements in Syria join national reconciliation process in Hama province

http://tass.ru/en/world/862994

Self-defense forces do not hand over arms in the framework of the ceasefire regime because they are formed to prevent any influence on residents by terrorist organizations

AYN-ELBET (Syria), March 17. /TASS/. Nine settlements in Syria's Hama province have signed agreements on joining the process of national reconciliation and ceasefire regime, head of the reconciliation group in Hama Lt. Col. German Rudenko told reporters on Thursday.

"Today’s event was attended by elders, leaders of tribal communities. They signed the agreement on joining the ceasefire regime by nine settlements with total population of around 10,000 people," Rudenko said.

He noted that elders agreed for the state authorities to return to their settlements and assist the Syrian government in any possible way at peace negotiations. They also agreed to promote laying down arms and returning to peaceful life among their fellow countrymen on the other side barricades.

"Participants in the negotiations first of all expect social guarantees from the authorities. Many of them have no income or access to medicine. They are waiting for restoration of basic utilities and infrastructure," Rudenko went on.

Syria’s MP Sheikh Marwan al-Asad, who signed one of the application lists, noted the importance of joining the ceasefire regime by the settlements located close to the contact line with militant groups. "I represent the eastern part of this region. My settlements are located in 30 kilometers from the contact line with armed militant groups. We are grateful to Russia and everyone else who helped made our land safer. This is very important for us as we leave in close proximity from terrorist strongholds," he said.

Sheikh Marwan al-Asad noted that residents of the settlements he represents were forced to leave their houses when terrorists from other countries came and thanked Syrian President Bashar Assad for helping to oust them. He also thanked Russia "for the peace initiative from which we all benefit."

"I hope that today’s gathering will become an example for new settlements that will want to embark on the path of reconciliation," he concluded.

German Rudenko also noted that thirty-eight settlements in the Syrian province of Hama have signed the application lists to join the ceasefire regime in the country, and 10 more requests were received over the last week

"Taking into account today’s settlement, already 38 villages have signed application lists to join the ceasefire regime. Some residents of these settlements took part in the activities of opposition groups, but the absolute majority of the population called for them to lay down arms and return to peaceful life," Rudenko said.

He added that after the big people’s gathering last week in the capital of the Hama province, the population and its leaders have significantly stepped up their activities, and more than 10 requests for joining the ceasefire have been received over the last week.

The military official also noted that self-defense forces do not hand over arms in the framework of the ceasefire regime because they are formed to prevent any influence on residents by terrorist organizations. The self-defense forces fall under the jurisdiction of local security committees.

The ceasefire between government forces and armed opposition took effect in Syria at 00:00 Damascus Time on February 27. An hour before the agreement entered into force, UN Security Council adopted a resolution in support of cessation of hostilities in Syria. The inter-Syrian talks resumed in Geneva on March 9.

Putin to present state awards to servicemen for Syria operation

The operation in Syria lasted for five months and 14 days and involved Russia’s Aerospace Forces and Navy

MOSCOW, March 17. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin is due on Thursday to thank personally the servicemen who took part in anti-terrorism operation in Syria, the Kremlin press service said.

The supreme commander-in-chief "will hand out state awards to servicemen and specialists of the military-industrial complex who distinguished themselves when fulfilling tasks in the Syrian Arab Republic," the statement said.

More than 700 soldiers and officers of Russia’s Aerospace Forces, Ground Forces, Navy and also representatives of the military-industrial complex have been invited for the ceremony to be held in the Georgievsky Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace.

The operation in Syria lasted for five months and 14 days and involved Russia’s Aerospace Forces and Navy. Russia’s aviation carried out more than 7,200 sorties from the Hmeimim airbase near Latakia destroying over 12,700 facilities of gunmen.

The support of Russia’s Aerospace Forces helped Syria’s government troops to launch offensive in the provinces of Hama, Idlib and Aleppo. Thanks to Russian strikes, the terrorists lost half of profits from illegally extracted oil on the Syrian territory.

Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Russia’s forces have killed more than 2,000 gunmen in Syria who came from Russia, including 17 field commanders. Russia’s losses were three people, one aircraft and one helicopter.

President Putin ordered on Monday to start withdrawing the main part of Russia’s forces from Syria as of March 15. He said the tasks assigned to the military were generally fulfilled.

Russia began the anti-terror operation in Syria on September 30, 2015 at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Two Russian facilities in Syria - Hmeimim and Tartus - will continue the effort to monitor ceasefire in coordination with foreign partners.

Within two to three days we will complete the assigned task," Bondarev told the Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda in an interview on Wednesday.

On Monday, Putin ordered the withdrawal of the main contingent of Russian forces from Syria, stating that they had accomplished their anti-terrorism mission.

Russia had conducted an aerial campaign against terrorists in Syria since September 30 at President Bashar Assad's request.

Russian Su-24M bomber jets have safely returned from Syria to airbase in Russia's Ural.

A group of Russian Su-24M bomber jets has landed at airbase in Russia's Chelyabinsk region.

On March 14, Putin announced that the Russian armed forces had fulfilled their mission in Syria and their withdrawal would begin the following day.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is starting the withdrawal of its air group from Syria as conditions for internal political process in the country have been created.

"The Russian air campaign in Syria has created all necessary conditions for internal political settlement of the Syrian conflict," Peskov told reporters.

"The pullout schedule is the responsibility of the Russian Defense Ministry," Peskov said, adding that Russia will maintain the airbase in Hmeimim and the naval facility in Tartus in order to continue the monitoring of ceasefire regime.

Russia’s “Mission Accomplished” Moment in Syria

http://journal-neo.org/2016/03/17/russias-mission-accomplished-moment-in-syria/

But unlike America’s in Iraq, Russia actually has accomplished its mission. In what appears to be another carefully planned masterstroke vis-a-vis the US, NATO, and its Persian Gulf allies upon and around the Syrian battlefield, Russia has announced that it is withdrawing its forces after its 5 month long intervention on behalf of the Syrian government in Damascus.

The BBC reported in its article, http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-35807689,that:

In a surprise move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his military to start withdrawing the “main part” of its forces in Syria from Tuesday.

He said the Russian intervention had largely achieved its objectives.

The comments come amid fresh peace talks in Geneva aimed at resolving the five-year Syrian conflict.

In a hamfisted attempt to mitigate the impact of Russia’s statement, US analysts and commentators among many prominent Western news outlets have attempted to frame the announcement as a ‘cut and run’ move made by Moscow after decimating US-backed “moderate rebels,” and leaving the so-called “Islamic State” (ISIS) mainly intact.

Andrew Peek, a former strategic adviser to the top NATO commander in Afghanistan, admitted in his NY Daily News op-ed titled,http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/andrew-peek-putin-pulling-syria-article-1.2564263 — which is not what he said he wanted,” that ISIS has lost some 25% of its territory during the Russian intervention.

It should be noted that Russia’s intervention had begun and ended in a fraction of the time the US has been “fighting” ISIS. The US intervention – a much more lengthy military campaign – had overseen not a reduction in ISIS territory, but the vast and otherwise inexplicable expansion of the terrorist organization before Russia’s arrival in Syria.

West Claims That Russia is out of Money

Another attempt by the West to frame Russia’s announcement as a “failure” for Moscow includes claims that Russia can no longer sustain its operations. Upward estimates of the cost of Russia’s operations in Syria ranged between 1-2 billion USD per year – approximately 1/50 of Russia’s overall annual defense budget.

Again, Western commentators and analysts, in their haste to frame Russia’s latest move as a “failure,” directly contradict their own analysis months ago. Reuters in their article, http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-russia-syria-idUSKBN0UB0BA20151229admitted that:

Three months into his military intervention in Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin has achieved his central goal of stabilizing the Assad government and, with the costs relatively low, could sustain military operations at this level for years, U.S. officials and military analysts say.

Indeed, according to RT itself https://www.rt.com/business/327427-russia-arms-export-2016/, Russia’s defense export agency Rosoboronexport alone pulled in over 15 billion USD in 2015, with another 15 billion planned for 2016. While Russia is undoubtedly feeling the pressure of sanctions and the West’s manipulation of energy markets, providing air support to the Syrian Arab Army was – and still is – a very sustainable undertaking.

What Really is Happening

To truly put this announcement in proper context, it helps to understand just what the battlefield looked like in Syria before Russia’s entry into the war and how it looks now.

In approximately mid 2015, it was clear that US-backed terrorists were openly coordinating with groups including Jubhat Al Nusra, a US State Department-listed foreign terrorist organization. Furthermore, this new combined front, primarily operating in northern Syria from Turkish territory, appeared to be coordinating with ISIS in the east.

In fact, a coordinated offensive in the north where logistical lines were shorter and easier to maintain put significant pressure on Damascus to redeploy troops to this front. At the same time, ISIS surged toward Palmyra from the east. Both operations were large enough to implicate significant planning and staging, perhaps even months head of the coordinated, two-front offensive.

Russia intervened at the height of this shift in which Damascus found itself forced to make a series of strategic withdrawals. While the force Russia brought was relatively small compared to typical Western military interventions, operations were intense and undoubtedly effective. Virtually all of the terrorist gains made during the mid-2015 offensive were rolled back or significantly contested, while logistical lines feeding Western terrorist proxies from Turkey were exposed and destroyed.

With the tide clearly turned, the bulk of necessary combat missions for Russia are indeed over. What is left is monitoring the ceasefire, continued strikes against ISIS, and the ability if necessary to strike logistical lines leading into Syrian territory if they are reestablished.

But because Russia has announced its withdrawal, and because of the West’s eagerness to pounce on acknowledging it, if only to condemn it as a sign of weakness and failure, the West itself will now have great difficulties if it tries to further perpetuate hostilities on the ground.

Of course, the West fully intends to continue training and equipping terrorists along Syria’s borders and sending them into the country – US generals before the US Congress have recently testified saying as much – and of course Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and other US allies in the region plan to continue supporting terrorist groups already operating in Syria – but they all do so in the aftermath of a grand gesture of deescalation by Russia.

And while Russia and even the West have framed this latest move as a “withdrawal,” the reality is that Russia will be maintaining the only two military installations it ever had in Syria.

Russia will continue to maintain enough of a presence to respond effectively to any shift back in favor of the West’s proxies – proxies who are supposed to be observing a ceasefire, and who – if they violate it now in the belief that Russia will no longer respond – will not only expose their own treachery and that of their Western sponsors, but will justify a wide range of retaliatory actions to be taken by Syria and its allies – including Russia.

Russia’s grand gesture is made with the sure knowledge that whatever forces it leaves behind in Syria will be more than adequate to support Syrian troops who are now making huge gains on the battlefield. The initial force needed to reverse the immense, nationwide coordinated offensive undertaken by Western backed terrorists in 2015 is no longer necessary.

Russia will be cutting back on an already cost-effective military campaign, while providing itself and its allies additional credibility during the ceasefire and ahead of peace talks. All the while, it will still be more than capable of responding to any conceivable threat posed to its allies in Damascus.

Putin to Western Elites: Playtime is Over
http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/putin-western-elites-playtime-over/ri761

A longer version of this article originally appeared at the ClubOrlov blog.

Most people in the English-speaking parts of the world missed Putin's speech at the Valdai conference in Sochi a few days ago,
and, chances are, those who have heard of the speech didn't get a chance to read it, and missed its importance.

Western media did their best to ignore it or to twist its meaning. Regardless of what you think or don't think of Putin (like the sun and the moon, he does not exist for you to cultivate an opinion) this is probably the most important political speech since Churchill's “Iron Curtain” speech of March 5, 1946.

In this speech, Putin abruptly changed the rules of the game. Previously, the game of international politics was played as follows: politicians made public pronouncements, for the sake of maintaining a pleasant fiction of national sovereignty, but they were strictly for show and had nothing to do with the substance of international politics; in the meantime, they engaged in secret back-room negotiations, in which the actual deals were hammered out.

Previously, Putin tried to play this game, expecting only that Russia be treated as an equal. But these hopes have been dashed, and at this conference he declared the game to be over, explicitly violating Western taboo by speaking directly to the people over the heads of elite clans and political leaders.

1. Russia will no longer play games and engage in back-room negotiations over trifles.
But Russia is prepared for serious conversations and agreements, if these are conducive to collective security, are based on fairness and take into account the interests of each side.

2. All systems of global collective security now lie in ruins.
There are no longer any international security guarantees at all. And the entity that destroyed them has a name: The United States of America.

3. The builders of the New World Order have failed,
having built a sand castle. Whether or not a new world order of any sort is to be built is not just Russia's decision, but it is a decision that will not be made without Russia.

4. Russia favors a conservative approach to introducing innovations into the social order,
but is not opposed to investigating and discussing such innovations, to see if introducing any of them might be justified.

5. Russia has no intention of going fishing in the murky waters created by America's ever-expanding “empire of chaos,”
and has no interest in building a new empire of her own (this is unnecessary; Russia's challenges lie in developing her already vast territory). Neither is Russia willing to act as a savior of the world, as she had in the past.

6. Russia will not attempt to reformat the world in her own image,
but neither will she allow anyone to reformat her in their image. Russia will not close herself off from the world, but anyone who tries to close her off from the world will be sure to reap a whirlwind.

7. Russia does not wish for the chaos to spread, does not want war, and has no intention of starting one.
However, today Russia sees the outbreak of global war as almost inevitable, is prepared for it, and is continuing to prepare for it. Russia does not war—nor does she fear it.

8. Russia does not intend to take an active role in thwarting those who are still attempting to construct their New World Order—until their efforts start to impinge on Russia's key interests.
Russia would prefer to stand by and watch them give themselves as many lumps as their poor heads can take. But those who manage to drag Russia into this process, through disregard for her interests, will be taught the true meaning of pain.

9. In her external, and, even more so, internal politics, Russia's power will rely not on the elites and their back-room dealing, but on the will of the people.

To these nine points I would like to add a tenth:

10. There is still a chance to construct a new world order that will avoid a world war.
This new world order must of necessity include the United States—but can only do so on the same terms as everyone else: subject to international law and international agreements; refraining from all unilateral action; in full respect of the sovereignty of other nations.

To sum it all up: play-time is over. Children, put away your toys. Now is the time for the adults to make decisions. Russia is ready for this; is the world?

UK Foreign Secretary Acting Like a Violent Drug Addict Says Putin Acts Like a Wife Beater (Video)

Following up Vladimir Putin's decision to begin withdrawing forces from Syria, one would think the West, which has been throwing a fit ever since the first Russian sortie threw into doubt the exceptional status of the Americans and Western Europeans as sole arbiters others' affairs, would be relieved and grateful. We have seen words of cautious optimism from the likes of John Kerry and several European foreign ministers. Not so the British.

A petulant young hobbit which has been allowed to pose as a member of parliament asked a leading question to Philip Hammond on whether they ought to be pleased by Russia's decision to pull back in Syria. Hammond gave a response which in all its brevity, was so laced with total falsehoods and baseless charges, that it beggars belief:

Listening to these arrogant snobs, you suddenly realize Freud knew what he was talking about with his theory of psychological projection.

Let's start with the question: ...any war crimes they may have committed...

Britain's support for the war in Syria is a contravention of the UN charter and every person killed since the beginning of the war is a murder to be laid at Britain's (and America's) doorstep as far as I am concerned.

Now let's look at Hammond.

Somebody goes in to another country, starts bombing civilian populations, destroying hospitals and schools.

What, you mean like the UK did not only in Syria but in Libya and Iraq. And in Serbia....but for the sake of time I suppose I should leave previous centuries of British crimes out of this.

If they decide they have done enough, let's not give them too much praise. It's a bit like 'did he stop beating his wife.

And if the UK ever stops backing barbaric Islamic jihadists in Syria, I guess it'd be a bit like 'did he stop getting high on crack cocaine, savagely and randomly attacking others because of his own paranoid delusions of grandeur and then blaming all of his own violent acts on those around him.'

Yeah, something like that.

The fact they are there in the first place is something we have to continually protest about. We certainly should not give them any credit for simply withdrawing from these illegal activities.

Protest to whom? To the UN? To that vague entity the "international community" which only includes those select nations of the world which excuse Anglo-US crimes?

There are only two sources of legitimacy for military action in Syria (or anywhere) under the current international system the world is supposed to be following: the United Nations Security Council and the government of the country concerned. The Western alliance has approval from neither for what it has done to Syria, which is monstrous.

Russia on the other hand, attacked internationally recognized terrorists (the modern equivalent of pirates or brigands) at the invitation of the Syrian government. What Russia did is 100% totally legal, from any possible perspective.

Everything about Britain's role in Syria is totally illegal and the most egregious violation of international law. The pot calling the kettle black would be an understatement.

The nation whose glorious history of empire includes, among other escapades, two wars to enforce the opium drug trade on China, an invasion of Crimea (then indisputably Russian) in order to make Europe safe for Muslim Turkish occupation, countless brutal suppressions of revolts and movements for freedom and self-determination across the globe, and culminating most recently, in the instigation and support of 5 years of butchery in Syria to remove that country's internationally recognized moderate government and replace it with medieval barbarians - this nation presumes to hold (along with its progeny turned master the USA) the moral heights from which it can judge and propound.

Russia's action in Syria can, if anything, be described as humanitarian and aimed at defending human life -- including thousands of Christians and moderate Muslims being massacred by ISIS which the UK and US have done nothing to stop.

The British government is simply outraged that Russia is able to so cleanly and effortlessly leave a war, while they and the Americans get continually bogged down. That when Putin says 6 months, he means it. It must be infuriating to watch Vladimir Putin once again keep his word, humiliating his opponents (i.e., the immoral liars).

Philip Hammond can congratulate himself that his government drove the wife beater out of Syria. He should award himself a Commander of the British Empire, if he can find it (the British Empire, that is). Or his conscience.

Israel steps up oil drilling in Golan
https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/charlotte-silver/israel-steps-oil-drilling-golan

Israel is moving forward with plans to drill for oil in the occupied Golan Heights, despite warnings that the move violates international law.

For the last year, Afek, an Israeli subsidiary of the US firm Genie Energy, has undertaken exploratory drilling in the Golan. Afek believes there is a vast reservoir of oil under Syria’s Golan that could supply all of Israel’s energy needs.

In September 2015, Afek announced it had discovered its first oil reservoir at one of the sites where it had been drilling.

Last month, the company was granted the go-ahead to conduct more drilling in the Golan by the Israeli authorities.

In response, Palestinian legal rights group Adalah and Al-Marsad, the Arab Human Rights Center in the Golan Heights, wrote to Yuval Steinitz, Israel’s infrastructure minister, demanding that the drilling permits be withdrawn.

In the letter, attorneys Suhad Bishara and Karama Abu Saleh reminded Steinitz that international law requires that residents of the Golan be able to control and benefit from the land’s resources.

Population expelled - In 1967, Israel occupied Syria’s Golan Heights, expelling most of the Syrian population.

Approximately 130,000 Syrians were driven out and most of the Golan’s 200 villages destroyed, according to a 2010 investigation by the Tel Aviv newspaper Haaretz.

Today, 22,000 Syrians belonging to the Druze minority community remain amid a similar number of Jewish settlers. The settlers are spread out across 30 settlements, all of which are illegal under international law.

In 1981, Israel formally annexed the territory but governments around the world, including the United States, consider that annexation null and void.

In 2006, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution that reaffirmed what it called the “inalienable rights” of the Arab population in the Golan over its natural resources.

As the occupying power, Bishara and Abu Saleh write, Israel is “prohibited from altering, transferring or confiscating immovable properties,” as well as looting the Golan’s resources.

The 1907 Hague Regulations, a cornerstone of international law, state that an occupying power must “safeguard the capital of these properties.” Stealing resources from an occupied territory constitutes the crime of pillage.

But in December 2011, Israel’s high court ruled that Israel’s occupation is unique and not bound by the laws against pillage.

Indeed, Israel has already made profitable use of the Golan’s agricultural and water resources.

As journalist Jonathan Cook reported recently, the company behind the drilling expedition may have its own ideological motivations for the oil venture.

“Depths of darkness” The chairperson of Afek is Effie Eitam, a far-right former politician and military general, who is an Israeli settler in the Golan.

[...] The members of the strategic advisory board of Afek’s parent company include Dick Cheney, the former US vice-president, the media tycoon Rupert Murdoch and Larry Summers, the former secretary of the US treasury.

The last year has seen Israel attempt to intensify its grip on the Golan Heights, while Syria is consumed by bloodshed and war.

At a meeting between Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, and Barack Obama, the US president, last November, Netanyahu reportedly suggested that the US change its position on the status of the Golan Heights in light of Syria’s civil war.

According to media reports, Netanyahu argued that because Syria is likely to be divided in the future, Israel’s rule over the Golan should be recognized as legitimate.

Last summer, Israel’s education minister Naftali Bennett, who leads the far right Habeyit Hayehudi (Jewish Home) party, called on “the entire world” to “recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.”

Since 2011, President Bashar al-Assad has defended his rule against rebel factions, including Islamic State and affiliates of al-Qaida.

Israel has assisted the opposition to Assad by attacking areas under his force’s control and providing assistance to Syrian opposition forces, including Jabhat al-Nusra, an affiliate of al-Qaida.
