I’m starting this thread because some fairly new information regarding the possible Science behind the 2012 Mayan long-count calendar has been released, called The Horizon Project. This group is apparently producing a video series about a cyclic event that will soon take place (within the next 5-15 years).

Apparently some clips of the full video have recently surfaced on YouTube (links are below). The “science" presented seems like it could be legitimate, but because I have a laymen’s knowledge of Astrophysics and Cosmology I was wondering what others thought of the science and info presented in this video. As well as possibly a S.O.S., if the info is true.

Fundamentals proposed in the movie:
========================
The core tenet or principle is that our solar system will soon pass through what they call the “Central Galactic Plain" of our Galaxy and what the Mayans called the “The Dark Rift". When this happens Earth will pass through a strong Gravitational force.

The event would occur approximately every 5,126 years (Our "Age": August 11, 3114 BC - December 21, 2012 AD).

Video Links:
=========
Links to clips of the video are listed below. Apparently only (23 min, 16 sec) of the full (1 hr, 15 min) video was uploaded.

Question: Why do you believe any of this? Just because it is on internet? Please, be sincere.

Well, I’m open-minded and I came across this info (that I had never heard or seen before) that put a "supposed" scientific-spin on the Mayan 2012 calendar. I can’t say that I "believe it" . The science and info presented intrigued me and I’m in the process of trying to do “due diligence" .

I used the term "Fundamentals:" as an attempt to quickly sum up the info presented in the movie, for those who don’t have the time or ability to watch the movie clips… No more. No less.

I am simply in the process of trying to determine if the supposed "science" presented is legitimate. As well if anyone on this forum sees a possible connection to other possible future events?

Did you check credentials of the "scientists" behind this "info?"

It is ALWAYS necessary, before taking ANYTHING seriously. When there are no scientists with proper credentials - it is not "scientific". If there ARE scientists with proper credentials - then it still can be disinformation or wishful thinking. But first thing ALWAYS is to ask this question:

"Sez who?"

It’s a good point, though. I’ll change it to read: Fundamentals proposed in the movie

Yes, I’ve checked the credentials of the "scientist" seen in the video clips (being questioned) and he has questionable credentials (from what I’ve uncovered), but "they say" (the host) that they have/are working with many different scientists from different fields; who so far have gone unnamed and un-presented (although I haven’t seen the full video).

It’s supposed to be a video series so perhaps they will be presented "on camera" in future videos???

And why do you think Mayans knew what is going to happen in the future? Where from? Did they know, or were they guessing? And if they were guessing, why are their guess going to be better than other guesses? For instance better than the guesses of contemporary "scientists", astronomers, physicists etc.

What do you mean by "credentials". Surely you are not talking about formal education. Science is, for the most part, open to anyone who wants to learn about it.

Ark,

You’ve never heard of the Mayans? I guess you’d have to grow up on the American continent for it to be common knowledge...

In a nutshell
=========
The Mayan civilization existed somewhere between 500BC – 900AD in the area of present day Mexico and Central America They were similar to the Sumerians and other Mesopotamian civilizations in that they were pre-industrial; they had hieroglyphic writing, trade networks, art, culture, etc..

Though the Maya barely grasped the significance of the wheel, they somehow acquired advanced knowledge of astronomy and time. Most of their sites had a rudimentary astronomical observatory. The Mayan calendar is reportedly one-ten thousandth of a day more accurate than our most modern-day calendar. Historians are not sure how the Maya acquired they’re deep knowledge of time and astronomy, but the ancient Mayas credited they’re advance knowledge to Kukulcan.

To the Maya, Kukulcan was an all-knowing god-like figure. And although all the Mayans had dark skin and dark hair, Kukulcan was described as been tall, having white skin, long white hair, a white beard, blue eyes, and an elongated skull. The Mayan women used to strap boards onto their infants developing skulls to elongate their skull. Artifacts of the misshaping skulls have been found by archeologists.

Who was KulKulcan? A myth, a man, a king, an alien? Know one knows. Around 1000AD according to the Maya, for reasons unknown he left and went to the sea. Before he left he promised the Mayans that he would return, but he never did. The Mayans and Aztec were later all but wiped out by the Spaniards who sailed to the "New World" .

Calendar Basics
============
Even though it was invented 2,000 + years ago, the Mayan Calendar is one-ten thousandth of a day more accurate than our most modern-day calendar. It consists of three calendars, or wheels, in one, and is able to trace specific dates back into the millions of years. The Mayan Calendar divides history into five Great Cycles. We are currently in the last cycle, which is forecast to end violently on December 21st (the winter solstice) in the year 2012. There several other prophetic-type events (that have happened {i.e. the date of civil war in America etc.}) that are tide to the Mayan calendar cycles but I don’t know that much about them.

The calendars have been known of for a long time, but they have always been looked at as just an oddity: (i.e. Some tribal people who didn’t understand the wheel created these extremely advanced Calendars and cycles based upon astronomy. Strange.. strange… but of no significance.)

Sure, there are a few people who believe that some cataclysm will happen on Dec 21, 2012, but it's based solely on belief. Where as the info that I came across, above, was the first-time I had heard of anyone linking the Mayan calendar to anything of substance(Astronomy and Astrophysics).

More detailed info about the Mayan Civilization and Calendars can be found at the links below:

vzmoore, I think that Ark is simply asking why do you think the Mayans were any more likely than anyone else to "know" what the future holds. He knows who the Mayans are. If you look past all the hype that has surrounded the Mayan calendar - if you look only at the facts, why do you think they would know? Just because we cannot fathom how they came up with their calendar - how does that translate into them having the answer?

He can clarify much more completely than I, but I think that was his general 'gist'.

Anart,

I can’t say that I "believe" the Mayans know the future anymore than anyone else.

I’m a person who is interested in prophecies (period); rather the prophecy is from the Mayans, Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce, Mother Shipton, Egyptians, Religion, ETs, or etc really matters not, to me.

You name the prophecy… I’ve probably heard or read it. Prophecies are like a form of entertainment for me.

For me, if the info presented in the movie is true, it is just an update to my knowledge about the Mayan prophecies.

If someone said "theirs a newly uncovered Egyptian or Edgar Cayce" prophecy I’d be just as interested in learning about.

For example: Did you know that shortly before Hitler committed suicide he "supposedly" predicted that America would be destroyed by China?

I’ve heard ALL types...

I spent a few minutes to check on "Dr." Brooks Agnew, who is listed as the lead scientist in the Horizon Project. In the ScienceDirect database, categories "Earth and Planetary Sciences", "Mathematics" and "Physics and Astronomy", I couldn't find a single publication authored by him despite claims to more than 100 papers and numerous patents. I went to Google and found this:
http:// peswiki (dot) com/index.php/PowerPedia:Brooks_A._Agnew

I think that is enough to move on.

I hope you won't take offence to this, but I don't think your as sceptical about this as you would imply.

After a little interaction you said:

"Well, I’m open-minded and I came across this info (that I had never heard or seen before) that put a "supposed" scientific-spin on the Mayan 2012 calendar. I can’t say that I "believe it" ."

But you intitially said:

"This group is apparently producing a video series about a cyclic event that will soon take place (within the next 5-15 years)."

Now I'm just going off my initial reaction to reading the thread but if I myself was skeptical to begin with I think I would have wrote something like this; "This group is apparently producing a video series about a cyclic event that will "Supposedly" soon take place (within the next 5-15 years).

I deduce you did not use the word imply cause you believe, but then deny believing it, or ?.

Now for the open door - it could just be me reading too much into this, or the fact that I do not know you, nor have I previously read anything else outside of this thread of which you have never written (outside of). Another thing I find strange is your profile is completely empty. No name, no website or anything to give me information of any kind. I "assume" you have been here before, but again that is just going off a hunch.

Indeed, it is true that prodigys pop up in the strangest places. So one need not be educated in an 'acredited' facilty to have a true understanding of knowledge.
Two things come to mind when I viewed this whole post (and saw the videos on youtube.). One: that no scientist who had any idea of what was really going on would be allowed to live (there HAS been a history of the right specialists dying in strange coincedences. Do the research.). The other is that we are so far into what is actually to come, within the next year or two, that it would not make a difference even to the %95 of the modern world mind programmed to believe what the govenrment was saying (go back to sleep and don't forget to shop more.).
4D STS is overconfident in thier enormous power. That is the only advantage STO candidates have. At the breaking point, they wil get soft and information will slip through. It makes no difference to the gluttons. THIER harvest will be fruitful. If a few folk slip through the net, if some flesh falls off the table onto the floor, well they would have been problem cases anyway.

To play Devil's advocate, the scientist in question seems a bit too polished. The sweater and tie, and thinning hair. The books in the background...I haven't attended university in years (thank the God's for that.) but is that the norm to suggest one is a serious scientist?
Most of my professors wore surfing shirts, had long hair and were unruly...and taught me a thing or two about dealing with authority.

The C's say all this will go down, earthquakes and comets, and chaos (oh my!) in or around 2012. Much like the Horizon project suggests. Indeed, I admire a man who is willing to call his own research into question...
