Phoenix police are investigating possible sex abuse at a nursing facility after a female patient recently became pregnant and gave birth, KPHO reports.

Sources tell KPHO that the alleged victim has been a patient at the Hacienda HealthCare facility for at least a decade after a near-drowning incident left her in a vegetative state. That woman gave birth to a baby boy on Dec. 29.

“None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth,” a source familiar with the situation said.

“How were they alerted to the fact that she was going into labor?” asked reporter Briana Whitney. “From what I’ve been told she was moaning. And they didn’t know what was wrong with her,” the source said.

KPHO also learned that the baby is alive. “There was a nurse that was there and from what I’ve heard she’s the one that delivered the baby,” the woman said.

“What do we know about the baby?” asked Whitney. “From what I know the baby is alive and the baby is healthy,” she said.

The source says the patient required around the clock care and many would have access to her room.

“She had no way to defend herself in this sort of situation?” asked Whitney. “No. None whatsoever. Not even able to communicate the fact that she was pregnant,” she said.

The source said the facility has changed protocol this week.

“I was told that as of now, if a male staff needs to enter a female room, they need to bring in a female employee with them,” she said.

“And as far as you’re aware that is a new policy?” asked Whitney. “Yes,” she said.

Investigators from multiple agencies are saying next to nothing about the case, but at some point last spring or summer, someone sexually assaulted the woman who was in a persistent vegetative state and she became pregnant.

Hacienda HealthCare spokeswoman Nancy Salmon released the following statement after KPHO asked about the case:

"Hacienda Healthcare has been in business in the valley for over 50 years, and has an outstanding reputation providing high quality specialized care for our patients. As a Healthcare provider, we cannot comment on any patient due to Federal and State privacy laws. Additionally, we cannot comment on any ongoing investigations. We can say that our patients and clients health and safety is our #1 priority and that we always cooperate, when asked by any agency, in an open and transparent way."

The Arizona Department of Health Services also released a statement:

"We are aware of this situation and are actively working with local law enforcement in their criminal investigation. Upon learning of the allegation, Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) immediately initiated an onsite complaint investigation to ensure the health and safety of the patients and ensure the facility is in compliance with all state laws and regulations. During this time, the agency has required heightened safety measures be implemented at the facility including increased staff presence during patient interactions, increased monitoring of the patient care areas, and increased security measures with respect to visitors at the facility."
The Arizona Department of Economic Security released this statement:

"The Department has been made aware of these allegations and we continue to work fully with the Phoenix Police Department in their ongoing investigation. Upon hearing of these allegations, we immediately dispatched a team to conduct health and safety checks on all members residing at this health care facility, which has been completed. We will continue to work to ensure the safety of all our members."

Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said "the matter is currently under investigation."

Founded as Hacienda de Los Angeles in 1967, Hacienda HealthCare describes itself on its website as "the leading provider of specialized medical care and social services for Arizona’s infants, children and young adults who are medically fragile or chronically ill, including those with developmental disabilities."

The organization says it offers dozens of programs and services through several nonprofit entities under its umbrella. According to its website, Hacienda HealthCare serves more than 2,500 people throughout Arizona each year.

If they really wanted to get to the bottom of this they'd do DNA test for male staff employed at the facility and males who visited the patient around the time of conception. Visitors to other patients and random service workers who periodically come to the facility (while knowing of the patients condition) are also suspect though.

At any rate that facility is facing a huge lawsuit.

There is a Spanish movie on this very subject: Talk to Her, by Almodovar. In this movie, the birth brings the young woman out of her coma. Strange and complex story.

Based on human nature, evrey one who could as often as possible.

It's disgusting to think that way. That is likely closer to the truth than any other option.

It seems hard to believe that those giving her personal care did not notice that her body shape had changed and, presumably, her abdomen was enlarged. Also her breasts would have enlarged. It would be pretty hard to miss that a fully grown fetus was inside someone's belly that was not there before.

Hmmm, I wonder, why?

If this was not a biblical immaculate conception, I'd first DNA check the sub-contractors. In my line of business, you don't put much faith in the subbies. Come to think of it, in most lines of business you don't put much faith in the subbies. They are most often effective at things far removed from the jobs assigned to them.

That aside, the sheer surprise of her completed pregnancy clearly shows how much attention, let alone protection, this patient would have been given at the institution.

But then again, it happened in Arizona.

Jimmy Saville can't be the only one to haunt hospital wards with defenceless patients. To use Laura's expression, we too frequently sweep these actions and events under the rug. It seems wherever there is a loophole or opportunity it WILL be filled by evil in one form or other.

The article seems to be short on details, even though, other news outlets have picked up on the same story.

This female has been in a vegetative state for about ten years and I'm wondering, if this might be a situation - where the Family could no longer handle the Medical bills and she was "awarded to the State" to manage her healthcare needs? I don't see any mention of family involvement, which is a sad situation, in itself? Even a visit "once a month" would have picked up on this? Arizona State may look into this and investigate but if they are the one's picking up the tab, I doubt any justice will be served? The investigation will go nowhere? The baby - by extension - is probably, also "awarded to the State" and will be put up for adoption. What a hell of a situation!

I hope they pay for their criminal carelessness dearly.

Hmmm, I wonder, why?

Because some US media outlets don't care and for some others two years wasn't enough time to prepare:

US websites block netizens in Europe: Why are they ghosting EU? It's not you, it's GDPR
The finger is pointed at Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which, although it is only just being enforced today, was adopted on 14 April 2016 – meaning organisations have had more than two years to prepare.

GDPR entered into force in May 2018.

There is not so much details about this news even in Spanish. With that information just we can speculate about that.Keeping in mind that the poor woman is 10 years in coma,so i can speculate that she would be a good subject to carry out experiments of how the organism of a woman in a vegetal state develops a healthy baby or not. Only speculations...

In this report, the Phoenix Police Department disclosed how authorities discovered that a woman gave birth to a child at Hacienda HealthCare. Police are now also seeking DNA samples from all male staffers at the facility in a push to identify the father of the baby boy. The Baby, once released from the hospital will be cared for by her Family.

How Police Learned Woman in Coma Had Given Birth: Baby Was Fighting for Life, Mom Was 'Helpless'

On the same day that the baby boy was born, officers responded to a call that an infant had “coded” and was in “distress” with troubles breathing. “The baby was born having issues, that was the nature of the call, that’s what started this on the 29th of December,” Thompson told reporters of how their investigation began.

The mother, who has been in a vegetative state for 14 years after a near-drowning, was “unable to move [and] unable to communicate, in other words, she was helpless and incapacitated,” according to Thompson.

Both the baby, who is now 11 days old, and his mother are currently recovering at a local hospital.

Nurse arrested in Hacienda sex assault case, police say

Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams and Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams held a press conference with the announcement on Wednesday morning.

Chief Williams announced Wednesday that police took the suspect into custody. They identified him as 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland, a caretaker and licensed practical nurse at the facility.

Sutherland was reportedly responsible for caring for the victim at the time the sexual assault occurred. He worked at the facility since 2011.

Police say DNA tests from employees reportedly helped police find a match between Sutherland and the baby. Officials took samples from Sutherland on Tuesday.

He was taken into custody and will be booked into jail Wednesday, police say. He is expected to be charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse.

Earlier this week, the facility announced that two doctors were no longer practicing and the family clarified the victim's condition saying she's not in a coma, but suffers intellectual disabilities.
