Show #53 - Protest Songs for the Revolution

Since artists like Korn, Eminem & Public Enemy have been brought up, I think the band Tool deserves mention (I've seen a couple topics about them in this forum). Technically, the music is amazing. They use unique time signatures and frequently change tempo in the middle of a song. Frontman Maynard James Keenan references numerous esoteric subjects in his lyrics. For example:

Jungian psychology and evolution in Forty-Six & 2
Cosmic catastrophes (comets, earthquakes, tidal waves) in Ænema
Sacred geometry, personal power, etc. in Lateralus
Life as a holy gift, the divine spark, being present in the moment in Parabola
Clash of ideologies, communication breakdown, crumbling society in Schism
Negative emotions, 'soul smashing', alchemy in The Grudge
Area 51, military-industrial complex, extra-dimensional beings in Faaip de Oiad

Faaip de Oiad is Enochian for "Voice of God." This interstitial track includes audio from the now infamous Area 51 caller on Art Bell's Coast 2 Coast radio program.

The band members almost never appear in their music videos, and their live concerts tend to put video screens as the main visual element instead of the performers themselves, with Maynard singing in a darkened corner of the stage. They rarely speak in overt terms about the meaning behind their music, preferring instead to joke around and let listeners decide for themselves. The result of all of this is a wholly refreshing approach to this art form that is plagued by egotism and excess in the mainstream.
