Show #65: Curing Diabetes and Other Modern Illnesses: Interview With Dr. Antti Heikkilä

Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in our modern world. Millions of people worldwide suffer from type 2 diabetes, and up to one third of the world’s population is pre-diabetic. Caused by disturbances in the metabolism of a hormone called insulin, diabetes is a serious illness affecting the whole body and leads to many complications, even premature death.

Dr. Antti Heikkilä, is a surgeon and orthopedic and traumatology specialist at Eira Hospital in Helsinki, Finland. He strongly criticises the current treatment for diabetes that is based on the use of large amounts of insulin, as well as a diet low in fat and high in carbohydrates. According to Dr. Heikkilä, this officially recommended treatment worsens the condition, by confusing insulin metabolism even more. Insulin is not harmless, it is a poison, and excess amounts cause much damage in the body.

Dr. Antti Heikkilä’s work is based on solid clinical experience of over 43 years, as well as many reliable published studies. Dr. Heikkilä’s recommendation for the treatment of diabetes is a natural and nutritional diet low in carbohydrates. Many of Dr. Heikkilä’s patients have been able to come off their medication or have completely cured themselves with a low carbohydrate diet.

Dr. Heikkilä is the author of Nutrition Therapy for Diabetes as well as dozens of medical papers

Join us and Dr. Heikkilä this Sunday, May 11th 2014, 2-4pm EST (11am-1pm PST, 8-10pm CET) for the low-down on how the modern diet has done so much to create rampant modern diseases like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, etc.

Looking forward to it! (Still working my way through catching up on several previous shows - can't seem to get enough time lately). With a doctor with decades of experience, it will give some much needed weight to what should be a common sense approach to diabetes (low carb diet).

Re: Show #65:Curing Diabetes and Other Modern Illnesses: Interview With Dr. Heikkila

Sounds great! Heikkilä is a well known figure here in Finland, and I've read some of his books. Of course, the medical establishment ignores and ridicules him.

I'm just curious, what prompted you to invite him to the show?

Re: Show #65:Curing Diabetes and Other Modern Illnesses: Interview With Dr. Heikkila

Sounds promising and I'm looking forward to the interview. May you could ask him if he tried to change diet in Type-1-Diabetics as well and what his experiences are?

I had just read an article from him on SotT the other day and thought about suggesting him as a possible guest. Apparently not needed anymore. ;)

Re: Show #65:Curing Diabetes and Other Modern Illnesses: Interview With Dr. Heikkila

I understand Antti Heikkilä (Pronunciation something like this - Antti Hay-k-ila where the "a" sounds like the "a" in "hat", not like "a" in "father") has helped a lot of people where regular medicine has not.

If I understood correctly, he had been treating people for many years as a regular practitioner and found that there were many he could not help. Some came back having cured themselves through diet. That was when he caught on that something was wrong with mainstream medicine. I am sure he can tell his story better himself, I am just writing from my poor memory.

If I bring up his name in conversation here in Finland, I get mixed responses. Some ask, I heard of him is he any good? I think I will take some of his books out of the library. Others say "Oh that Heikkilä religion! Pseudoscience humbug."

I did a quick google search and quickly I found articles in Finnish cutting him down for his position on the effects of too much carbohydrates, and his impatience with the scientific/medical community that resists the idea.

For example:

Pseudotiede ja hiilarimies Antti Heikkilä
On jälleen aika kaivaa hiilihydraattien suurimmaksi viholliseksi julistautunut Antti Heikkilä naftaliinista. Tänään tapetilla kuinka Heikkilän retoriikka kovasti muistuttaa pseudotiedettä, luomisoppia ja salaliittoteorioita

Pseudo scientist and carb-dude (?) Antti Heikkilä

It is once again time to dig out of mothballs that declared arch-enemy of carbohydrates Antti Heikkilä.
Under discussion today is how the rhetoric of Heikkilä strongly resembles pseudoscience, creationism and conspiracy theories.

...

The writer was kind of a moron.

I was curious about diabetes insipidus. It's also metabolic in nature and minerals are implicated but not as widespread as type 2 diabetes. Might Dr Heikkila be aware of some research available on this with respect to nutrition?

Well, sounds good. Looking forward to it :)

Yeah, the blog writer above admits that he has only read a few blog postings from Heikkilä, and has not read any of his books. Some people are turned off by Heikkilä's sometimes colorful language that he uses on his blog, or they latch on to his stance against microwave ovens, or some other less significant detail in order to attack him. Or how he talks about people that he has helped on his web page (anecdotal evidence), instead of referring to tons of studies.

Also the Finnish Diabetes Association (who recommend up to 60% carbs daily for diabetics) does not like him, and describes his methods as "irresponsible and dangerous". Never mind that the neighboring country Sweden has officially reversed their guidelines for diabetes treatment.

That was great! He was so nice and the info was great! Hope he gets more support. Will definitely be reading his book. :read:

It was another great show! Thank you SOTT crew and Dr. Antti! A lot of great information on the diet and how it has helped people with diabetes (and those with other illnesses). As he said himself, his patients have benefited greatly from the diet. He also said that coconut oil is very effective when it comes to viral infections. All in all, a very informative (and funny) show. I'm also looking forward to read his book.

Enjoyed the show this week. Interesting idea on having some of your dinner guests eat their bread out on the porch, but ya know...it wouldn't be long before the neighbors are accusing you of feeding the homeless. Catchy tune at the end, thumbs up.

It was Mother's day, so had to catch the show in rerun a little later. So very much enjoyed listening to Antti, he seemed such a well balanced sort with an important message for people (ideas not new in the forum). What was great was his simple old age observations between the observer, the physician, and those needing help, his patients, and then their acting on old grounded food traditions. I sent this show link out to a number of people and hope they also tuned in and keep Makin' Bacon to better health.

Thanks SotT Talk folks!

Thank you guys for another great show . Kudos to Dr Heikkilä for speaking the truth and exposing the farce that is eating high carb and low fat.

Another great show! To have an "anarchist" doctor to share his knowledge and experience.

Had a good laugh about the "passive carbs" at the end
