Starting on the ketogenic diet

The Force is Strong With This One
I was wondering where I would begin on the ketogenic diet?.

Is there a forum post on going step by step onto the diet?.

It might sound funny, but is there also a place where I can get an idea of what to budget?, and a basic weekly food list?.

thanks

The most important thing before jumping into the diet is to understand the problems that can happen during ketoadaption and how to deal with them. Otherwise, you can find yourself in a very uncomfortable place. Generally this means reading at least one book, although most books leave out some useful information that's in other books. One way to start is with the recommended reading list on health:

https://cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php/topic,33092.0.html

The first two books may get you through ketoadaption, assuming you don't have any really unusual problems, but more than likely you'll want to keep up with what others are doing with the diet in order to keep it flexible with day to day living and social situations.

Additionally what monotonic said there is Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation? thread where were discussed a huge amount of questions and problems during transition to ketosis. I understand that there are many pages but one's reading would be a good decision. Eventually the more you know the more protect you have.

Along with the forum thread mentioned above, Keto-Adapted: Your Guide to Accelerated Weight Loss and Healthy Healing by Maria Emmerich is the way to go.

Just doing some basic forum searches and googleling....

Ive found this sample three day diet and was wondering if anyone had issues with it??....

Excerpt below:

The Leafy Green Salad recipe:

This is a recipe for a basic very low carb salad with lots of flavor. It’s great to add to any high-protein, high-fat meal.

Spinach, lettuce and/or mustard greens.
Red peppers
Tomatoes.
Optional raw onions.
Optional green beans raw.
Balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing with salt and pepper. Use lemon and lime very sparingly if you add it. The vinegar actually reduces the glycemic index of this salad (and other foods).

Below I have outlined three days with a total of 9 meals that you can mix and match as you like. At the end I include a list of Ketogenic-safe ingredients you can add or subtract as you like. Remember the key is to have a high fat, high-protein and no-carb or very low carb diet. That means absolutely no sugar.

Day 1
Breakfast: 2 eggs done any way with yolks. Sausage containing no carbs or sugar. Bacon.
Lunch: Chicken with as much skin and oily gooey bits as possible. Steamed spinach or broccoli.
Supper: Steak with cheese. Fried mushrooms. Leafy green salad.
Before bed 1 glass of wine with a slice of cheese.
Day 2
Breakfast: 2 egg omlette with friend mushrooms, cheese and chopped parsley.
Lunch: A whole duck breast if you can get it or chicken again with as much fatty skin as possible. Leafy green salad.
Supper: Hamburger made with high fat mince without the bun. The mince can contain the usual paprika, chopped onions and garlic if you like, but absolutely no syrup or sugar. Add Cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and any other leafy low-carb greens you like.
Before bed 1 glass of wine with a slice of cheese.
Day 3
2 eggs done any way with bacon and usual no-carb sausage.
Steak with cheese. Leafy green salad.
Salmon (or other fish) fried and served with Bok Choy and your leafy green salad.

You can mix and match the meals above and get a good Ketogenic burn going where you will notice rapid weight loss.

Eat as much as you want ingredient ideas:

Beef,
Steak,
Hamburger,
Prime Rib,
Filet Mignon,
Roast Beef,
Chicken,
Duck (awesome if you can get it because it is very high fat),
Any Fish, Tuna, Salmon, Trout, Halibut,
Lamb,
Pork,
Bacon,
Ham,
Eggs,
Shrimp,
Crab,
Lobster,
Butter,
Oils (Olive Oil, Flaxseed oil, etc.),
Salt, Pepper, Soy Sauce,
Spinach,
Lettuce,
Mustard Greens,
Celery,
Cheeses,
Oysters,
Abalone.

Add for variety but in moderation:

Read the ingredients (if applicable) and make darn sure they contain no sugar:

Avocadoes
Mustard (with no sugar or carbs),
Tea no sugar with milk
Coffee black no sugar
Heavy Cream
Broccoli,
Cabbage,
Bok Choy,
Kale,
Asparagus,
Mushrooms,
Cucumbers,
Olives,
Celery,
Green Beans,
Brussel Sprouts,
Peppers (Red, Green, Jalapeno, Habanero),
Onions,
Nuts preferably almonds,

You absolutely must avoid all sugar on this diet because it is the highest GI carbohydrate that will very quickly spike your insulin and destroy any Ketogenic effect. Other foods to avoid roughly in order of damage they will do to the diet:

All sugar.
All Bread.
Did I mention avoid sugar?
All traditional carbs like rice, pasta, wheat, potatoes, even the low GI ones like beans and lentils.
Beware of sauces that contain sugar or things like corn starch.

Hi nothingman, I'm happy to hear you have chosen to adapt to ketosis :)

As Menrva suggested, Keto-Adapted really covers most of the pitfalls one might be faced with when approaching a ketogenic diet. It takes a bit getting used to and it isn't just a dietary change, it is more of a lifestyle change. But once you have made the transition from burning sugar to burning fat for fuel, you will instantly feel the benefits, both mentally and physically. It really is worth it :) One thing to remember is to keep hydrated!

Primal Body, Primal Mind by Nora Gedgaudas is also really informative and covers ALOT.

Best of luck, and keep us updated :D

Hi nothingman. You're going to find a lot of stuff on the internet for the ketogenic diet that is not appropriate to the way that we do it here. The red flags that jump out in the page you posted include cheese and milk (dairy is a big no-no), tomatoes (nightshade) and raw veggies (some are OK, but cooking deactivates a lot of anti-nutrients).

If you want to look up stuff online, try to focus on "Paleo-Ketogenic", since the paleo diet removes a lot of the harmful foods that may be considered acceptable on the straight ketogenic diet. Or, even better, do some searches on the forum here. There are lots of keto-friendly recipes here in the forum that will keep you in novel, nourishing meals for months :)

Yeah, it also includes peppers which are highly inflammatory. It is a nice effort to compile this list, but the best approach is to understand why certain foods are best avoided and why others are superfoods.

As many people have posted, the recommended reading list is the best place to start.
monotonic mentioned to read at least one book on the keto diet - this not only informs you of what to do, but more importantly WHY you are doing it. Gaining knowledge on the diet will motivate you to keep going and notice the effects alot more in the body.
Some people do struggle with the drastic change from the standard western diet to keto. If you find that you cannot keep it up, although it is not advised anymore, the paleo diet is a good transition diet to get you on the path of gut healing and eating real clean food.

In regards to price, it can vary depending on what your actually eating. When i first started paleo/keto i found it to be expensive. Once you learn and realize what and how much you need to eat the price drops significantly. Buying grass-fed animal fats to have with lean cuts of meat is a very cheap way to start. Also offal and cooking bacon (the fatty off-cuts) are extremely cheap :)! GOOD LUCK!

Thats a great help thanks. Im going to get one of those books now!!

Hi nothingman. I too, recommend "Primal Body, Primal Mind" by Nora Gedgaudas to get started. I`m curious as to what your diet is like now, if you don`t mind me asking? :)

Thanks for the feedback.

My diet today and since xmas is something similar to this:

breakfast: coffee , toast

lunch: tuna and cheese sandwich

dinner: roast chicken, peas, potatoes

snack: small bag of crisps

for the few months before xmas I would have a Irish fry for breakfast or a breakfast wrap, and then something around mid afternoon like a scone or soup, or something snacky, and sometimes dinner.

I am currently loosing weight, and excercise a lot (1-2 hours per day), but would really like to go to the next level.
