Strange spiral light seen in north of Norway

Absolutely jawdropping... :jawdrop:

Let's download all this stuff and preserve it...

Mystery as spiral blue light display hovers above Norway
This is fascinating and surfing around to different sites covering, theories range from the aurora to HAARP to the LHC to a space portal to 2nd coming to photoshop to missles. In particular the missle theory that's getting pressed by this site's article Failed missile launch caused strange light over Northern Norway? ends up pushing this warning about rocket launching that cites White sea coordinates which should have made news in other parts of northern Europe.

According to a couple of different Norwegian bloggers the site of the spiral was extraordinarily impressive. Although some reports have indicated it happened last night, it apparently happened this morning around 8:45AM. This All News Web article Massive UFO event in Norway: possible first open alien contact, images has a quote from a Norwegian somewhere who had just come home from night duty when this bizarre phenomenon revealed itself before him.
First there was a very strong white light in the middle of the ring. Then it began to spread outwards. The green line or beam that you see in the picture appeared probably ten to twelve minutes afterwards. It was my father who discovered it. He had never seen anything like that before. We stood on the porch at home and wondered how this could be happening. I do not think it's the aurora which we are accustomed to seeing.
This apparently Norwegian YouTube blogger provides an immediate account with Strange Spiral light phenomena over Norway coincides with Obama peace prize reception but possibly most amazing to me is a video link this blogger provides to a video from Senja, Norway which appears to be from a higher elevation than the most common vids out there AND shows some kind of ground level orange beam pointing in the direction of the spiral AND THEN (00:08) out of the spiral shooting straight up there is another glowing orange beam. At about 00:32 the video then shows TWO glowing orange orbs seemingly hovering above the space in the aftermath.

_yr.no, homepage of the national meteorology institute have an articel up now for debunking. I´ve translated it using _http://translate.google.com/#no|en| and brused up some of the most quirky sentences.

New mysterious lightphenomenon in north
Just before 08.00 Wednesday people across large parts of northern Norway observed a fantastic lightphenomenon on easternsky.

- It was like a big fireball that went around, with a great light around it again, "said Fred Hansen from Bø in Vesterålen to NRK Nordland.

Usure meteorologists
At Vervarslinga(Weatherreport) for Northern Norway the phone didn´t stand still. Did the meteorologists have the answer?

Head of the meteorologists in Tromsø observed the phenomenon itself on the way to work.

- From believing that it was the moon behind the cirrus clouds to believe that it was an attempt by EISCAT(HAARP) near Tromsø, I realized that there must be something much bigger, "says Helge Tangen.

But it was clear sky over much of the region, and meteorologists did not solve the mystery.

Fireballmeteor?
Astronomer Knut Røed Ødegaard is also more than sure of what you saw on easternsky Wednesday morning.

- It may have been a fireball meteor, but it doesn´t fit completely, Ødegaard said to NRK Nord Nytt.

Both Ødegaard and Tangen proposes missile launch in the east. In early November, it was also observed a strange light in the north. It turned out to be a Russian rocket.

A Russian rocket that exploded!
But neither the defense had an answer to the lightphenomenon.

- The light was seen in the east from Bodø. But we have no explanation for it. The light doesnt comes from any known air traffic that we can explain, "said John Espen Lien at the force's joint operational headquarters.

Finally NRK Nordland found the answer at Auroral Observatory in Tromsø. The light came from a rocket that was launched from the White Sea in Russia.

- The rocket is probably out of control and exploded. The special helical lightpattern is because the sun was shining on the fuel that leaked out, explained Truls Lynne Hansen.

Note that the Auroral Observatory in Tromsø was founded on money from the Rockefeller Foundation in 1930.

The other lightphenomenon they are talking could most posibbly be a rockett. It can be found here: _http://www.yr.no/nyheter/1.6847340

Bizarre indeed!
I wonder what it really is, and I wonder what the explanation will be, as the two will probably not be the same.

I think they´re already finnish with the explanation here in Norway as the national broadcasters says they have found the answer:

I don´t think we will see a further discusion on this in the mainstream media :-) And i realy thing the new year rockettsmaker want the recipe for the spiraling fuel effect.

Mmmm, and every night at twelve I turn into a pumpkin. By the way, they just love their 'dropping/leaking fuel' ‘explanation’, as they've done with the 'UFO' here by us as well:

But, like Data said, let's snag it all and preserve it.

Here's more - Spaceweather.com has come out with their version: www.spaceweather.com

STRANGE LIGHTS OVER NORWAY: This morning in arctic Norway, onlookers were stunned when a gigantic luminous spiral formed in the northern sky. "We are used to seeing lots of auroras here in Norway, but this was different," says Nick Banbury of Harstad who witnessed the phenomenon on his way to work "between 7:50 and 8:00 a.m. local time." Onlooker Jan Petter Jorgensen took this photo:

The first reaction of many readers when they see this picture is Photoshop! Surely this must be a fake. But no, many independent observers witnessed and phtotographed the apparition. It is real.

Banbury continues: "It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in color to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end. This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to Earth. According to press reports, this could be seen all over northern Norway and must therefore have been very high up in the atmosphere to be seen hundreds of km apart."

UPDATE: Circumstantial evidence is mounting that the phenomenon was caused by a malfunctioning rocket, possibly an ICBM launched from a Russian submarine. A Navtex no-fly alert was issued for the White Sea on Dec. 9th, and photographers appear to have recorded the initial boost phase of a launch below the spiral (see inset). A rocket motor spinning out of control could indeed explain the spiral pattern, so this explanation seems plausible, although it has not yet been confirmed.

I agree, and in particular I'm trying to get my hands on this Senja, Norway video that provides a vantage point which I mention in my post containing additional details I can't find anywhere else (orange beam emitting from the ground, verticle orange beam shooting straight up out of the spiral, two bright orange orbs hovering over aftermath). However, keepvid won't acquire a vid. Anyone know of another techique?

Sounds like it was traumatic for some according to different blog accounts.

Woah... how strange. At first, the pictures remind me of those old school magician umbrellas or boards with the swerving red that puts you into a trance/hypnosis. "you're getting sleeeeeepy!" And when I watched the video, it sort of looked like a projection screen and that the light was being projected from the ground towards the sky. Not the other way around, but maybe that's just me... :jawdrop: I also thought it looked kind of like a galaxy that turns into a black hole, and dissipates.

Either way, I don't think we'll know what it is for REAL until Laura asks the C's ;)

I know little about rockets, but I'd really love to hear a scientific explanation as to how a malfunctioning rocket could cause this light show!

If it was seen from central Norway to Finnmark in the far north of Norway, and was fired from the white sea, it seems strange that it wasn't also seen across much of Finland and Sweden too.

check out this map

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_St._Petersburg.png

Maybe it was fired from the white sea and exploded over northern Norway, but the images make it seem like it originated from "behind a mountain" in northern Norway.

Murmansk is the the headquarters of the Russian Northern Fleet, which suggests that it may well had have something to do with Russian submarines, but again, just what kind of "rocket" fails in that kind of way? Could it really all be down to atmospherics?

Hard to know for sure. Don't we have a career "deep black" balllistics expert on our forum??

Truly intriguing. Apparently a similar phenomenon was reported in China and a video uploaded on youtube in April 09. Click here to view the video. Unfortunately it's in Mandarin so appreciate it, if any Mandarin speaking members can give a brief account of what is being discussed. But the phenomenon looks similar to what was seen in the Norway.

Another similar video, but reported in Russia around 2007.

The Chinese video looks like it might be a piece of space junk re-entering. An odd shape causing it to spiral as it falls and burns.
Indeed it would be interesting to see how it is being described and discussed.

But the Norwegian video. Even a plausible explanation is difficult.

Mac

Truly amazing,3 videos of similiar phenomenon, but what is this, what is meaning of this spiral lights, only explanation is that this is from rockets
It looks like portal to something (just my opinion),but it could be something else,a sign for something to come or just "natural phenomenon".
Maybe Cs can answered.
