Multiple casualties are reported in Las Vegas after at least one gunman opened fire on an open-air country music festival on the city's famous strip.

Police are responding to reports of an active gunman near the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino after automatic gunfire was heard from about 10.20pm on Sunday local time (6.20am BST).

Several unconfirmed reports claimed that "two or three" gunmen were shooting from the 32nd floor of the hotel after gunning down a security guard.

It is not yet clear how many people have been injured, but witnesses are reporting multiple fatalities. Hundreds of people dived for cover when gunfire broke out during a song at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.

The Las Vegas Strip was put on lockdown as police swarmed the area. A police officer is among several people who are reported to have been shot.

"We're investigating reports of an active shooter near/around Mandalay Bay Casino," police said on Twitter as urged they urged people to avoid the area.

Concert-goers reported seeing flashes from the upper floors of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

Witnesses said they saw multiple victims as they fled the gunfire raining down on the open-air concert venue nearby.

Police officers were seen taking cover behind their vehicles while others carrying assault rifles ran into the Mandalay Bay.

Some concern goers sought refuge in the basement of the nearby Tropicana hotel and casino.

Eye witness accounts I saw were of 'Muzzle flashes' from the 'upper floors'. If they were planning such a thing as a False-flag, they probably had a few guys in the rooms above, and this guy simply as a patsy. Shot dead before he can speak, of course.

That's all speculation though. It is possible for a guy with appropriate rifles, and clear shot into a crowd, to hit hundreds of people.

Compared to other incidents, that 64 year old man(!) seems to have been extremely accurate and deadly with his spray fire.

Granted, I know nothing about assault rifles, one old guy injuring or killing 400+ people seems rather implausible to me. It has already been declared the deadliest mass shooting in US history!

How likely is it that a "lone" shooter would breakout 2 different window areas running from one to the other to kill 58 and injure over 500.

Odd how there is almost always only one shooter in the end and he usually kills himself or the police do. Dead men tell no tales. And 10 rifles easily taken into the hotel by one man without any detection is something that could use explaining by the hotel I think (not that I think it was one man by himself).

From her description, she also suggests that people stayed huddled low to the ground because they were more likely to be hit if they stood up, which again contradicts the claim that all firing came from above.

Immediate reports on social media of multiple shooters, first police report claims only one shooter.
Anyone with gun experience, is this a likely result considering distance? I would have thought that 'spraying' of bullets from such a distance would have lead to mostly injuries. 50 dead sounds more like highly accurate sniper fire.
