As an aside to this supermarket psychosis, I will allude to the case of Tesco heiress Dame Shirley Porter, who fled the UK amid scandal well over a decade ago regarding a "homes for votes" scandal in London, which invoved the sale of council homes in "marginal wards to prospective Tory voters".

Hmmm. Sorry, I am a bit of a luddite, but you can get the gist of her return to the UK after exile in (yes) Israel, here.

I have recollections of reading a few articles on this story back when I was a regular reader of the independent. Anyone intrigued enough to dig deeper? I intend to go a googling in a moment. I also now boycott the store. The only way to hurt them is with the pennies and the pounds.

A few more details from the erstwhile manchester guardian.

And here, another.

Seems like she has been lying about her assets for quite some time. Offshore accounts, perhaps?

Here's the dry read on the company from corperatewatch.

http://archive.corperatewatch.org/profiles/tesco/tesco3.htm

The profits for this company seem to be growing every year, and the evidence seems to point at the fact that this heiress still owes the country money for her crimes, after haggling a settlement in a way in which only the mind-bogglingly rich can do.

Who's the greater criminal? The "hoodie" who pinches a DVD from Tesco, or the lamentable Dame Porter?
