Briana Waters, who was just convicted in the 'green scare' is now in federal prison in Seattle (not Oregon) awaiting sentencing. The woman who 'fingered' her had sexually propositioned her at one time, and been turned down. (Can we say psychopath anyone?) Briana is the only one who is in federal custody awaiting sentencing, the only one who pled not guilty, and, from what I know of her and her character, the only one who was incapable by temperament of committing the crime. The people who turned 'states' evidence did not 'remember' Briana at first, it was only after being told that they needed 'more' that the main witness went through her phone book and came up with Briana's name. The states evidence folk are out on bail. Briana is being kept from her three year old daughter, and another life and home is wrecked because of insanity.
The timing of the torching of the McMansions was indeed suspicious, and one of the turning points in the jury. As I can't imagine anyone who cared about the environmental movement doing this to Briana, I can only think that it was either the FBI or the owners of the now unsellable homes.
Briana, who spent her early life fighting for forests and the life of the planet and the atmosphere, was the author and filmer of a documentary about a valley in Washington that was threatened with clear cutting. The valley had already been environmentally and economically damaged, and mudslides due to clearcuts had cut off the population more than once from the outside world. The eco-types and the loggers were in opposition. Briana managed to get them to talk to each other, started community meetings, and saved the valley and started real cooperation between the residents, as each realized their dependence and contribution to each other. This is the mark of a great humanitarian. I can understand that someone who could do this would be a real threat. (Tongue planted so firmly in cheek I'm about to swallow it.)
Briana says there is no light from the sun or moon, and that federal prison is a very frightening place, and certainly there is nothing approaching rehabilitation going on. Briana is fortunate —if you could call it that—that her amazing talent for both music and friendship leaves her with a cadre of people who care about her and are staying in touch. She thinks it must be hell on earth for those who are not this lucky.
This is the way it starts. First they come for the terrorists...If they can lock up Briana on hearsay and circumstantial evidence, ignoring evidence to the contrary, then no one is safe. This is the reality in America now. I wonder when they will come for me? And who will stand up for me then?
Briana Waters is a great human being, and an extraordinarily talented musician. I have been honored beyond belief to have been able to share a stage with her. Briana, your gypsy music will swell and grow, and reach out to the stars long after the souls of those who harmed you have scattered into dust.
