Emergency services have responded to an incident at Parsons Green tube station in London, with people reportedly hearing an explosion on Friday morning. It is understood that several people have been injured.

Officers were called the station at around 8:20am local time on Friday “following reports of an incident on a tube train,” the Metropolitan Police said.

Commuters have reported the explosion stemmed from a fire in a bucket, although the contents of the bucket are not known. Images and videos circulating on social media show what appears to be a burning bucket inside a shopping bag on the floor of the train.

Passengers were evacuated from the train after the back carriages reportedly filled with smoke.

A passenger shared images of his singed hair after the incident.

“Charred head from the fireball at Parsons Green,” Peter Crowley tweeted.

A number of passengers were stuck on the train.

One commuter told RT.com, “They are evacuating us now.”

Counter terrorism officers are understood to be monitoring the situation, but according to Foreign Secretary and former London Mayor Boris Johnson, the British Transport Police and TfL (Transport for London) are primarily dealing with the incident.

“Obviously, everybody should keep calm and go about their lives in a normal way, as normal as they possibly can,” he told Sky News. “As far as I understand it, the British Transport Police and TfL are on it and they will be updating their websites as and when we have more information.”

“We're aware of an incident at #ParsonsGreen station. Officers are at the scene,” the British Transport Police said on Twitter. “The station is closed.”

We're aware of an incident at #ParsonsGreen station. Officers are at the scene. The station is closed. More information as we get it.

The District Line between Edgware Road and Wimbledon has also been suspended, TfL said.

According to the London Fire Brigade, six fire engines, two rescue units and around 50 firefighters are at the scene.

The London Ambulance Service have released a statement. “We were called at 8:20 am to reports of an incident at Parsons Green Underground,” Natasha Wills, Assistant Director of Operations, said.

“We have sent multiple resources to the scene including single responders in cars, ambulance crews, incident response officers and our hazardous area response team with the first of our medics arriving in under five minutes.”

“Our initial priority is to assess the level and nature of injuries. More information will follow when we have it.”

Witnesses describe ‘fireball’ and ‘stampede’ in Parsons Green explosion: https://www.rt.com/uk/403405-witnesses-parsons-green-explosion/

Witnesses at London’s Parsons Green underground train station say a 'fireball flew down the carriage' following an explosion on a District Line carriage on Friday morning. They describe victims with facial burns and people injured in a stampede.

Commuters are reporting the explosion stemmed from a fire in a bucket, although the contents of the bucket are not known. Images circulating on social media show what appears to be a burning bucket inside a shopping bag on the floor of the train. RT.com has not been able to verify these reports.

An eyewitness told Reuters that flames engulfed one carriage forcing passengers to trample others as they rushed for an exit.

The man said people were trampled as they fled. He said he did not hear a bang.

“I just heard a kind of whoosh. I looked up and saw the whole carriage engulfed in flames making its way towards me,” he told Reuters

The train was packed with people, he added.

A Twitter user at the scene said: “Was on #parsonsgreen train when mass of people came rushing at us after 'explosion' on rear carriage. Surreal moment. Adrenaline pumping.”

Another Twitter user called Rigs tweeted that a fireball “flew down the carriage and we just jumped out open door.”

Emma Stevie tweeted: “I’m safe - had to run for my life at Parsons Green station - huge stampede, lots injured.”

BBC London presenter Riz Lateef, who was at Parsons Green on her way in to work, said: "There was panic as people rushed from the train, hearing what appeared to be an explosion"

"People were left with cuts and grazes from trying to flee the scene. There was lots of panic."

Another eyewitness called Luke told BBC Radio 5 Live there appeared to be "a sort of loud explosion."

"It happened just as we were pulling up to the Tube station so everyone just sort of piled out of the Tube and there was a distinct smell of burning."

"I certainly saw some burning injuries."

"Everyone behaved in the right manner as such, everyone got off as quickly as they can and you know supported everyone."

Another witness called Emma also told the BBC: "We were running down the stairs like. It felt like for our lives. Like sprinting, so happy I was wearing trainers.

"And I went down the stairs and after a while people were just piling on top of each other, because people were falling over trying to run so quickly.

"And there were two ladies underneath me and a little boy to my right, his head had been smacked into the concrete."

It is not yet clear whether the incident is terrorism related.

Britain has suffered four attacks blamed on terrorists so far this year which killed 36 people.

Sept. 27, 2017 - Town of Trosa, south of Stockholm passenger train derailment

Train Collides With Tank During Largest Swedish Military Exercise 'in Decades'
https://sputniknews.com/military/201709271057735937-sweden-exercise-train-crash/

A train has collided with a tank and derailed near the town of Trosa, south of Stockholm, marring the Aurora 17 military exercise, which Sweden proudly advertised as the largest since the end of the Cold War era as well as the first one to feature US tanks on Swedish soil.

The collision between a passenger train run by Swedish railway operation SJ and a combat vehicle engaged in the Aurora exercise occurred at a railway crossing on the regional line between Västerljung and Vagnhärad south of Stockholm, the Swedish newspaper Expressen reported.

According to the police, four people were injured, of which one was taken to the Karolinska University Hospital with an ambulance helicopter. Swedish Armed Forces press officer Jesper Tengroth confirmed that three soldiers from the P7 Southern Skåne regiment were taken to nearby hospitals.

"What we can say is that an armored car of the Pansarterrängbil 360 class [Patria AMV] has collided with a passenger train," Jesper Tengroth told Expressen.

A preliminary investigation into what was cited as "negligence in traffic" has been launched.

SJ reported that the accident involved a regional train that was on its way from Norrköping to Stockholm Central station, when it collided with the combat vehicle. Eyewitness Atia Rasul added that a fire subsequently broke out in one of the cars.

"The locomotive got derailed, but the cars remain on the track. The driver got a slight arm injury," SJ communications officer Karin Starkman Ahlstedt reported.

The police blocked all access to the crash site and launched a preliminary investigation into what was classed as "negligence in traffic," Åsa Willsund of the Södermanland police reported.

The Swedish Transport Administration announced a stop in train traffic between Vagnhärad and Nyköping due to the accident.
At present, the Aurora 17 military drill is taking place in the area, and local traffic was expected to be impacted as a result.

Aurora 17, which cost Sweden's state coffers 580 million SEK ($73 million) is the country's biggest operation of its kind in 23 years, where the army, the air force and the navy collaborate in a single drill. Apart from Swedish troops, it features hundreds of soldiers from the US, fellow Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as France. It is also the first time that US tanks have appeared on formally neutral Swedish soil. Aurora 17 is accompanied by Northern Coasts, yet another international exercise in the Baltic Sea.

The Northern Coasts drill was also set back by misfortunes. A Danish naval officer lost his life in an accident involving a hatchway outside the Danish island of Bornholm, whereas a Polish sailor drowned outside the Swedish port of Karlskrona, after falling overboard with a shipmate, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported.

Northern Coasts is one of the largest annual multinational marine exercises in the Baltic Sea region. This year's edition was hosted by Sweden and featured about 5,000 people from the Nordic and the Baltic countries, as well as other NATO member states.

18.12.2017 Tacoma, Washington - Passenger derailment

A major emergency response operation is currently underway, while the governor of the state has described the situation as "ongoing and serious."

A high-speed Amtrak passenger train has derailed near Tacoma in the US state of Washington, with the Pierce County sheriff's office saying that "injuries and casualties" were reported.

While the authorities are yet to release a statement on the exact number of casualties in the accident that took place before 8 a.m. local time 64 kilometers south of Seattle, a major emergency response has been underway after the train fell off a bridge that runs above a major interstate.

The Pierce County sheriff's department's spokesman told CNN that "there were some fatalities" as a result of the accident as at least one car fell of the bridge onto the highway.

Media reports indicate that first responders are treating the situation as a mass casualty incident, with several cars still hanging from the bridge.

"Multiple motorists injured on roadway, no fatalities of motorists reported," the sheriff's office stated.

Photos from the site released by social media users show that a part of the train is apparently hanging off the track.

The ongoing situation involving the Amtrak passenger train that partially fell off a bridge above a highway is "serious," according to Washington Governor Jay Inslee's Twitter statement.

According to Amtrak's statement on Twitter, it is "aware of an incident involving Amtrak train 501," while additional details are due to be released later.

All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 have been closed south of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, with drivers being warned to avoid the area.

According to Reuters citing a news release from the state's transportation department that dates back to October, the accident has occurred on the first day that Amtrak trains started using a new track between the cities of Tacoma and Olympia in order to reduce travel time.

An Amtrak passenger train derailed Monday morning, spilling multiple cars off an Interstate 5 overpass and killing several people on the train in Pierce County, Washington, according to the spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Several motorists in vehicles that were struck by the fallen train cars suffered injuries, but there were no fatalities among people in those vehicles, the sheriff’s office said.

The deaths “are all contained to the train,” said Ed Troyer, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesman. “It’s pretty horrific.”

EARLIER:

Dec 18 (Reuters) - An Amtrak passenger train derailed on a bridge over a major highway in Washington state on Monday morning, sending part of the train crashing down onto Interstate 5 and killing several passengers, authorities said.

A spokesman for the local sheriff's office, Ed Troyer, told reporters at the scene there were "multiple" deaths but did not have a specific number to report. He also said no motorists were killed, though some were injured when part of the train struck several vehicles.

Amtrak passenger Chris Karnes told local news outlet KIRO 7 that passengers were forced to kick out train windows in order to escape, because emergency doors were not functioning properly following the derailment.

"We had just passed the city of DuPont and it seemed like we were going around a curve," Karnes said. "All of a sudden, we felt this rocking and creaking noise, and it felt like we were heading down a hill."

"The next thing we know, we're being slammed into the front of our seats, windows are breaking, we stop, and there's water gushing out of the train. People were screaming," he added.

The derailment occurred on the first day that Amtrak trains began using a new route between the cities of Tacoma and Olympia, part of a project to reduce travel time, according to an October news release from the state's transportation department.

The new route takes trains along Interstate 5, eliminating a major choke point for passenger trains in Tacoma and allowing trains to reach speeds of 79 miles per hour (127 km per hour), the department has said. Monday's train, which was scheduled to depart Seattle at 6 a.m. (1400 GMT) en route to Portland, Oregon, was the first to run along the new route.

It was not immediately clear whether the derailment, which came during a busy travel time one week before the Christmas holiday, was connected to the new route.

Amtrak confirmed its train was involved and said "some injuries" had been reported but did not immediately offer further details.

The train derailed around 7:30 a.m. (1530 GMT) in DuPont. A photograph posted by a Washington State Police spokeswoman showed an upside-down train car partially crushed on the highway, with a second car dangling off the overpass.

About 70 people were aboard the train, local news media reported, citing the state transportation department.

Authorities warned drivers to avoid the area, and the southbound lanes remained closed.

Update: An Amtrak train hurtled over a bridge across Interstate 5 in Washington State on Monday, which the Associated Press reported led to the deaths of six people and an estimated 77 injuries.

Six Dead, 77 Injured in Washington State Amtrak Crash
https://sputniknews.com/us/201712181060113993-washington-state-amtrak-crash-deaths/

Amtrak reported in a statement that 78 passengers and five crew members were aboard the train when it crashed. All 13 of the Amtrak's cars were derailed.

The derailment occurred in DuPont, 40 miles south of Seattle and just outside Tacoma, Washington. It also happened on the first day of a new route for Amtrak trains moving between Tacoma and the state capital of Olympia.

State transportation authorities reported that the $181 million new route passes over Interstate 5 which allows the trains to reach a higher speed of 79 miles per hour, shortening the commute time. However, Amtrak reported the train to have exceeded its maximum speed, and was traveling at 81 mph at the time of the crash.

Local sources reported that Don Anderson, mayor of the nearby town of Lakewood, opposed the new route because of what he called insufficient safety measures.

The mayor told local source KOMO on December 5 that the new route would lead to a deadly accident. "Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens" Anderson said.

Although it has been speculated that the new route may be connected to the crash, the reason remains unknown at this time. Preliminary reports deny that the crash was the result of a maintenance issue. A press conference is slated for 2 PM local time.

Passengers told local news stations that they had to escape the train by kicking out windows after the emergency doors failed to open.

Washington governor Jay Inslee has declared a state of emergency in the affected counties of Pierce and Thurston. State militia, as well as the National and State Guards, were deployed to the scene. Amtrak service south of Seattle has been suspended.

"Something went very, very wrong and there are some questions we will demand to be answered," said Rep. Denny Heck (D-WA) in a statement. "It's a nightmarish image."

The crash attracted national media attention, with US President Donald Trump acknowledging the tragedy in a tweet. He also pushed for infrastructure reform, which was one of his landmark and highly-anticipated campaign promises.

Amtrak's approach to safety was also criticized by the National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) in November. "Amtrak's safety culture is failing, and is primed to fail again, until and unless Amtrak changes the way it practices safety management," NTSB Chairman Robert L. Sumwalt said in a statement.

"Investigators found a labor-management relationship so adversarial that safety programs became contentious at the bargaining table, with the unions ultimately refusing to participate."

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — An Amtrak train and a semi truck collided in San Marcos, Monday evening.

In video sent to KXAN, firefighters were seen at the Wonder World Drive train crossing just west of Interstate 35. An official on scene told KXAN’s Lauren Lanmon it did not appear there were any injuries. Around 9:25 p.m., the train continued on its way, but crews continued picking up products spilled from the truck and its wreckage.

A passenger on board said the train was stationary for more than an hour after the crash as crews worked to clear debris. The white semi truck did not have a logo displayed and was possibly heading toward Wimberley. The semi was able to get across the first track, but was hit while crossing the second.

The back side of the trailer was destroyed in the collision.

That spokes person just didnt know a single thing did she? lol. as for the speed the train was traveling, here is a Amtrak route tracker link for the Amtrak 501 that was involved in this accident. You can click on the different points on the map to see how fast the train was going at that point.

if you dont want to click on the link or it just doesnt work,
the last ping from the train was at 7:41am and the train was going 81.1 mph and at 7:46am there was a "service disruption" message.

it was going between 78.5 mph and 82 mph for at least 15-20 miles prior to the accident.

if you look at the map, the accident happened on a curve after a long 15 mile straight away. i think it was just going too fast for the curve but then again im just taking a guess.

That's a strong possibility, also, weather conditions could have added to the problem, if there was a small shift in the tracks. Along with the Northeast, Washington experienced single digit temps during the night hours and then a sudden warm up slightly above freezing during the day. According to reports, "It also happened on the first day of a new route for Amtrak trains moving between Tacoma and the state capital of Olympia" and maybe the dirt and gravel foundation under the tracks wasn't "compacted enough" where the train slipped off the tracks? Many possibilities including human error?

Rail experts ask why new track in Washington state Amtrak crash did not have speed control system
http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-washington-amtrak-derailment-20171219-story.html

After a speeding Amtrak train derailed during its first trip on a new rail line — on the heels of two deadly passenger rail crashes blamed on high speed since 2015 — safety experts on Tuesday asked why the train did not have the latest automated control system.

The train was traveling 80 mph in a 30-mph zone on a newly opened $181-million segment of track south of Seattle, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Train cars spilled onto busy Interstate 5 and killed three train passengers.

The new 14.5-mile bypass, developed by the local government agency Sound Transit, was designed to allow the train to travel at faster speeds by avoiding cargo traffic.

But the passage was not yet equipped with what is known as a “positive train control system.” Such systems automatically slow down trains when they are approaching curves too quickly or headed toward a collision with another train.

Sound Transit is working to install the complex electronic system, having outfitted the majority of the equipment on its tracks and trains, but does not expect the automatic system to be operational until the second quarter of 2018, said spokesman Geoff Patrick.

When everything else goes wrong, the positive train control is supposed to intervene. Investigators said the lack of such a system contributed to eight deaths in an Amtrak accident in 2015 and a single fatality in a New Jersey Transit crash in 2016.

“Why they didn’t have positive train control is a question in my mind,” said Michael McGinley, a railroad safety expert and track engineer. “Why wouldn’t they build a new system with the latest technology?”

The simple answer is that U.S. railroads and their government regulators have been slow to implement the tricky system, leaving the majority of trains unprotected. McGinley noted that the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Communications Commission, among other federal agencies, took more than a year to coordinate their rules for the system.

Much of the freight railroad industry fought the regulations, arguing it was not economical. And when the companies were finally ordered to adopt the technology, suppliers were backed up to design and produce the custom systems.

“I think it should make people very angry,” Keith Millhouse, the former board chairman for Southern California's Metrolink commuter rail system, said of the lack of positive train control on the Washington track. Metrolink installed positive train control after the 2008 Chatsworth train disaster, which was caused by a texting Metrolink engineer.

Congress had originally given the nation’s rail services until 2015 to finish installing positive train control systems on their lines. But that deadline was extended until the end of 2018 as rail officials complained about the technical challenges of implementing the safeguards.

To positive train control advocates such as Millhouse, that delay has been deadly.

“It was clear that train could not handle that curve going 80 miles an hour,” Millhouse said of Monday’s Amtrak crash. “Given the fact positive train control was mandated in the Rail Safety Act of 2008, the delays in getting it implemented around the country are really inexcusable, and it’s cost people their lives.”

Patrick, the Sound Transit spokesman, said installation of the positive train control was not behind schedule and that the agency always intended to have it operational some months after the service began. He noted that other segments of the Amtrak rail system between Seattle and Portland, Ore., also do not have operational systems.

NTSB officials gathered the speed data from the rear engine of the 14-car train, which appears to be the only car that did not derail on a bridge over Interstate 5. About five crew members and 80 passengers were on board.

However, it’s “too early to tell” why the train was traveling so fast in a slow zone, NTSB member Bella Dinh-Zarr said at a Monday night news conference, as federal investigators began arriving at the scene of the crash.

She did not say whether investigators believed speed was the cause of the derailment and added that the train crew had not been interviewed yet.

“We will be looking at all the different areas of this accident” to look for possible factors leading to the crash, Dinh-Zarr said. “We don’t have a great deal of information to report.”

Typically, train engineers are supplied with “employee timetables” that include speed limits on every inch of the track they will go over.

About one mile before a speed-restricted curve, signs are posted notifying the engineer of a speed change. And engineers are required to be “territory qualified” and familiar with their route, particularly on an inaugural journey like the one the Amtrak train was taking, said McGinley, a railroad safety expert and track engineer.

The Amtrak’s front locomotive was reportedly carrying two engineers when it crashed, not the typical single train operator used on most trains. The presence of two engineers will probably be examined by investigators.

“Whether they were distracted when they passed the speed sign, we don’t know,” said Steven Ditmeyer, a retired research and development chief at the Federal Railroad Administration.

Monday’s crash seems to share some similarities with a 2015 Amtrak crash in Philadelphia, which derailed after a distracted engineer entered a curve too quickly.
At a 2016 meeting announcing the board’s findings of the Philadelphia crash’s causes, NTSB Chairman Christopher A. Hart said positive train control would have stopped “this entirely preventable tragedy.”

“Unless positive train control is implemented soon, I’m very concerned that we’re going to be back in this room again, hearing investigators detail how technology that we have recommended for more than 45 years could have prevented yet another fatal rail accident,” Hart said at the May 17, 2016, meeting.

The three dead on the train included two rail aficionados, Zack Willhoite and Jim Hamre, who were on board for the inaugural journey.

Willhoite worked as an IT customer service support specialist for Pierce Transit, a Pierce County transit agency.

“Behind the scenes he was a writer and advocate for better transit for all,” tweeted Pierce Transit board member Chris Karnes, a crash survivor, who said Willhoite had also helped the board with IT issues. “He will be missed.”

Hamre was a board member for the Rail Passengers Assn., a transit advocacy group, and he formerly worked at the Washington State Department of Transportation.

“Jim combined personability and kindness, and paired it with an intricate and detailed knowledge of transit policy and technical insight,” the association said in a statement. “This made him an extremely powerful advocate and an inspiration for others.” Willhoite was also a member of the association.

Tuesday was expected to be the first full day on the scene for NTSB investigators. Dinh-Zarr, the board member, said investigators were often on scene for seven to 10 days. It’s common for reports issuing probable-cause findings for the reasons for crashes to take a year or longer.

“Our mission is not just to understand what happened, but why it happened, and to recommend changes so we can prevent another tragedy from happening again,” Dinh-Zarr said, noting that the NTSB has recommended the implementation of positive train control for years.

Millhouse, the former Metrolink chairman, urged swifter action.

“The NTSB report will be very exhaustive but will take a year or 18 months to come out,” Millhouse said. “In the interim, the people of Washington and Oregon just can’t sit back and cross their fingers and hope nothing happens again. They have to be proactive now and take measures with their system.”
