A German high-speed train traveling from Cologne to Munich caught fire early on Friday, prompting the evacuation of all 510 passengers without injury before flames ripped through two carriages and burned them out.

Mass-selling daily Bild said a policeman traveling on the ICE train smelled smoke and activated the emergency braking system, “averting catastrophe”.

Operator Deutsche Bahn [DBN.UL] said it had closed the high-speed line between Cologne and Frankfurt as a result of the fire and would divert trains traveling that route, adding 80 minutes to the journey time.

The cause of the fire was being investigated, it said.

At least seven people were killed and about 80 injured when a train was derailed near the Moroccan capital Rabat on Tuesday morning, a medical source said.

At least one wagon overturned in the incident near Sidi Bouknadel, a town 10 km (six miles) north of Rabat, on a coastal line connecting the city of Kenitra to the commercial hub of Casablanca.

“I heard the very loud sound of the accident and rushed to the site, where I saw people screaming in fear and pain, while others were jumping out of the train windows,” a witness told Reuters.

Many of the injured were taken to the Moulay Abdellah hospital in Sale, near Rabat.

“Some people lost their arms and legs in the accident,” the medical source there said. Relatives of the victims wept at the hospital.

Some cases were treated at the Mohammed V military hospital in Rabat, state news agency MAP reported.

National railway operator ONCF said investigations into the cause of the crash were under way.

The royal court said King Mohammed VI would pay the funeral and burial expenses of the deceased.

Local websites suggested earlier that two trains had collided, though the official then refuted the information.

October 19, 2018 - At least 59 Killed as train hits crowd in Northern India

A commuter train traveling at high speed ran through a crowd of people on the rail tracks in northern India killing at least 59 people on Friday, state officials said, making it India’s worst rail disaster this year.

Video footage from the scene showed hundreds had gathered to watch the burning of an effigy as part of the Dussehra festival celebrations, when a commuter train ran through the crowd.

“We have 59 confirmed dead. The toll can rise,” State police chief Suresh Arora told Reuters, adding emergency officials were still trying to ascertain the extent of the disaster on the outskirts of Amritsar in Punjab state.

A Reuters witness at the scene saw bodies of victims strewn around rail tracks, friends and relatives stood around in shock, many were sobbing and appeared distraught.

An officer in the police control room said it was hard to confirm the toll as there were dismembered body parts all over.

Reuters partner ANI, a domestic news agency, reported that the Chief Medical Officer of the Civil Hospital in Amritsar said 60 people were killed and at least 51 people were injured. Reuters could not immediately confirm that death toll.

Police said it was “freak accident” as people did not hear the train approaching amid the din of festivities and fireworks.

During the festival of Dussehra people all over the country set aflame large effigies of a 10-headed demon from the Hindu epic Ramayana in a ceremony that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.

In Amritsar, video footage showed the effigy of the demon Ravana had just been lit and firecrackers were going off when the train plowed into the crowd, who were craning their necks and applauding the show.

ANI reported that a witness at the scene said the train that ran over people was traveling at a high speed.

Amarinder Singh, Punjab chief minister, said he was rushing to Amritsar to supervise relief and rescue operations.

“We have also ordered an inquiry as to why this incident has taken place,” Singh told ANI, adding he did not know why the Dussehra celebrations were being held so close to the railway tracks.

DECADES OF UNDERINVESTMENT
Singh declared a state of mourning and said all offices and educational institutions across the state would remain closed on Saturday.

A witness told Indian television channel Times Now that relatives of some of the deceased were picking up dead bodies by themselves and no proper rescue operations were currently taking place.

Bodies of victims lay strewn around the scene and local television stations showed distraught and angry people, including a weeping mother who just lost a child.

“Lot of students were gathered here and we can see so many unknown bodies lying around and there is not even enough light here even now,” one person on the scene told a local channel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was extremely saddened by the train accident.

“The tragedy is heart-wrenching,” he tweeted. “My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and I pray that the injured recover quickly. Have asked officials to provide immediate assistance that is required.”

India’s state railways, largely built during colonial rule, have an appalling safety record after decades of underinvestment in rail safety infrastructure, as the priority has remained more on keeping fares low for the 23 million passengers who use the network daily.

Seven people were killed and 21 were injured earlier this month when nine coaches of the New Farakka Express derailed in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

October 21, 2018 - Taiwan train crash kills 18 in deadliest rail tragedy in decades
Taiwan train crash kills 18 in deadliest rail tragedy in decades | Reuters

Eighteen people died and 175 were injured when a train derailed in northeastern Taiwan on Sunday, authorities said, in the island's worst rail disaster in more than three decades.

Four carriages overturned in the crash, which occurred in Yilan County near the coast on a line popular among tourists when all eight cars ran off the tracks on a bend near a station, officials said.

It was unclear what caused the crash. As of 9:35 p.m. (1335 GMT), all 366 passengers onboard - including the dead and injured - had been evacuated or removed from the wreckage, the Taiwan Railways Administration said.

“The train was going very fast. I thought to myself: Why was it not slowing down on a curve?” 30-year-old Henry Tseng, who was onboard one of the overturned carriages and suffered eye injuries, told Reuters.

“I hit a wall when the car started to flip. Around five to six people were thrown out of the carriage door...There’s no time to think what happened. Everyone was in a rush to get out,” he added.

Hundreds of rescuers and military personnel worked through the wreckage with spotlights on Sunday night in search of survivors, with ambulances stationed nearby.

Rescue workers, some attending to injured people at the scene, used cranes to lift the battered cars, some of which were lined in a zigzag pattern near the tracks.

“Check there, check there,” several rescuers shouted while lifting a deformed car with a crane to look for survivors. Some rescuers climbed onto the top of an overturned carriage which had hit a pole carrying electricity.

The official Central News Agency said the incident was the island’s deadliest rail tragedy since 30 were killed in a 1981 collision in northern Taiwan.

“It’s terrifying. I really did not know how it happened. After a scene of terror, the train flipped, the seats were broken and suitcases were all over the place,” a seventh-grader with the surname Yang told the news agency.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
“We need to get some water in quickly,” a woman was seen shouting in a live broadcast on Facebook shortly after the crush in the late afternoon. Several passengers, who appeared to be suffering from minor injuries, were carried out from a deformed car by local villagers before rescuers arrived, the video showed.

“We will use all our strength and efforts for the rescue,” President Tsai Ing-wen wrote on her Facebook page.

An investigation was under way to find out the cause of the crash, Taiwan Railways Administration said. “The train was in pretty good condition,” its Deputy Chief Lu Chieh-Shen told a news conference.

An American citizen was injured. The authority was checking whether more foreigners were on board.

The derailment came weeks ahead of island-wide local elections that are being seen as a bellwether for Tsai’s ruling party’s performance in presidential elections due in 2020.

On November 30, a train with miltiary equipment derrailed west of the Russian city of Omsk. The rail was consisting of 71 carriages. 21 of them overturned as a result of the incident. According to reports, the overturned carriages were containing various armoured vehicles, including some artillery pieces.

The Russian Defense Ministry commented on the incident by saying that no personnel were injured as a result of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

It’s interesting to note that the incident happened amid the recent round of escalation on the border between Russia and Ukraine. The Kiev regime even declared martial law in the regions bordering Russia. Some experts openly say that President Petro Poroshenko and his inner circle are trying to provoke an open military conflict with Russia in order to solve their internal political problems and to keep the shriking power.

Ukraine is set to hold a presidential election on March 31, 2019 if it is not aborted because of a “war” with Russia. Poroshenko’s current rating is about 2-5% rating and he has little chances to win the election “democratically”.
