Turkey begins operation in Syria to establish buffer zone: Report

http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2016/05/11/465017/Turkey-Syria-military-operation-Jarablus-Kilis-Daesh

Turkey has reportedly launched a military operation on the Syrian side of the border as part of a plan to establish a buffer zone in Syria.

According to a Tuesday report by the Turkish Yeni Safak newspaper, the operation allegedly aims to push back the Takfiri Daesh terrorists from an area that is 18 kilometers long and 8 kilometers deep in Syria’s Jarablus region.

Under the plan, the Turkish military will use artillery shells, guided missiles and mortars to target the militants who have repeatedly fired rockets at the southern Turkish border town of Kilis.

The newspaper said the operation will be supported by the international coalition, particularly the United States and Germany.

Earlier in April, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Ankara will deploy a US-made rocket launcher system on the border with Syria to allegedly combat the Takfiri Daesh terrorists.

Cavusoglu said the US High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) would be “deployed on the Turkish border in May as part of an agreement” with Washington.

HIMARS would allow Turkey to hit Daesh positions within a 90-kilometer (56-mile) range, while Turkish artillery has a limited range of only 40 kilometers (24 miles), the minister stated.

Ankara is seeking to establish a safe zone in the 98-kilometer (60-mile) stretch between Manbij in Aleppo Province, northern Syria, and the border to shelter Syrian refugees, the Turkish foreign minister said.

Citing unnamed US officials, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that Turkey’s special military force carried out an unusual weekend operation against Daesh in Syria.

A small group of elite Turkish troops entered Syria on Saturday to help more effectively target Daesh who have been launching rocket attacks into Turkey for weeks, US officials claimed.

According to the US officials, the operation was part of a deepening campaign by the Turkish army to push Daesh away from a vital 60-mile stretch of the Turkey-Syria border that serves as the group’s main lifeline.

Over the past few weeks, Kilis has come under frequent rocket attacks by Daesh militants, prompting the Turkish army to respond with howitzer fire.

Turkey has frequently used such rocket attacks as a pretext to shell the Syrian territory or send troops into the Arab country.

Kilis is a town located just north of the Syrian border, some 10 kilometers from the Syrian town of Azaz. According to Turkish officials, it is the only town in Turkey with a majority of Syrians.

In late July 2015, reports said that Washington and Ankara have agreed to establish a buffer zone along the Turkey-Syria border in an alleged attempt to flush Daesh Takfiri terrorists out of the demarcated region and facilitate the return of the Syrian refugees to their homeland.

The United Nations has voiced concerns over the plan, saying Turkey should first guarantee the safety of the refugees in the area.

Iran has also expressed their opposition to the plan, saying it encroaches upon the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Arab country.

Moreover, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov censured the proposal, which he said, contradicts the international law and will heighten tensions in the region.

Many blame Ankara for supporting militant groups that have been fighting to topple the Syrian government. The Turkish government also stands accused of being involved in illegal oil trade with Daesh, but it strongly rejects the allegations.

In late May 2015, Turkish-language Cumhuriyet newspaper posted on its website footage purportedly showing trucks belonging to Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization, also known as the MIT, carrying weapons for militant groups in Syria.

Since late September 2014, the United States, along with some of its allies, has been conducting airstrikes against purported positions of Daesh inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or the United Nations. Turkey permits US warplanes to use its air base in the south for the airstrikes.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has furthermore displaced over half of Syria’s pre-war population of about 23 million.

All options on table against ISIL on Turkey’s border: Erdoğan

All options in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on Turkey’s border with Syria remain on the table, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said May 10 amid word that Turkish forces conducted a weekend operation against the group in Syria.

“All alternatives are on our agenda, on our table to find a solution to this problem,” said Erdoğan, addressing the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) in Ankara on May 10.

“What is going on Syria is a historic showdown, do not forget it. The projectiles that hit Kilis are not the brattiness of some of the terrorists there; this is part of a historic showdown,” Erdoğan said, referring to the southeastern border province of Kilis being hit by a series of rocket attacks originating from ISIL-held territories in northern Syria.

“I know the pains and sorrows my brothers from Kilis are going through,” he added.

Meanwhile, Wall Street Journal cited May 10 U.S. officials as saying that Turkey’s special military force carried out an “unusual weekend operation” against ISIL fighters in Syria as part of an increasingly risky campaign against the extremist group.

“A small group of elite Turkish soldiers entered Syria on Saturday [May 7] to help more effectively target [ISIL] fighters that have been launching rocket attacks into Turkey for weeks, American officials said,” the WSJ reported.

Interesting article on Sott -- regarding Erdogan:

http://sputniknews.com/politics/20160511/1039402486/erdogan-one-man-regime.html

"With the resignation of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish president
is on a fast track to consolidate unchallenged power."

Maybe ... maybe not.

I've noticed (over long periods of observation,) the real powers behind the throne -- tend to always get out just before the real SHTF.

A striking case was the U.S. financial crisis and the role of AIG.

While most are still unaware, the mechanism that threatened system collapse -- laid in the transactions between AIG (Financial Products Group) and the likes of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and major banking institutions worldwide. Credit Default Swaps.

All the above firms faced utter devastation (bankruptcy) ... had AIG not paid off (fully) on those "insurance" contracts. The U.S. government MADE SURE it did.

Maurice Greenberg ran AIG -- in a fashion mightier than a king. And for the longest time. But miraculously prior to the meltdown -- he got "pushed" out, stemming from some minor infraction. Pure coincidence? Hard to say.

When I look at Erdogan's situation -- I intuit something similar. The real power behind the throne ... just got out in the nick of time. By "resigning." When the real SHTF in Turkey, he (and others) will be there, to pick up the pieces.

All this is utter speculation on my part.

And I could be quite wrong.

FWIW.

The Erdogan family business

Translated from German by Tom Winter May 9, 2016

A day after the resignation of Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Thursday it has become clear how vehemently Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expanding his power over the Bosporus.

Turkey experts agree: Davutoglu, with his high profile in the EU refugee negotiations, and the criticism of the presidential system Erdogan wants, was becoming too powerful to suit Erdogan. Erdogan on Saturday made it clear all over again that he discounts the EU call for a change in the terrorism laws in Turkey: "Those who criticize us because of our fight against terrorism, have themselves put democracy and freedom on the shelf, when the bombs started to explode on their own ground," Erdogan said, according to the Anatolia news agency.

The odds-on successor for the post of prime minister is therefore also close to Erdogan: his son-in-law and Energy Minister, Berat Albayrak. The 38-year-old married the oldest daughter Esra Erdogan in 2004, and thus has long been an integral part of the clan. Moreover Albayrak is considered ardent admirer of his father-in-law. Erdogan could not want greater loyalty.

A powerful circle They hide behind high walls in Istanbul's Üsküdar. The Erdogan family inhabits five villas there - all are owned by the sons Ahmet and Bilal. Value: around six million euros. Erdogan himself lived here only for rent, they say. While their father earns just 50,00 euros a year, the children are swimming in money. Where does it come from?

Official figures do not exist. According to the opposition newspaper "Cumhuriyet" it all derives from entrepreneurial commitments right down to the youngest daughter - in industries such as cosmetics, ready meals, shipping and jewels.

The members of the Erdogan-clan ► The wife Emine (61) At great events she is always at Erdogan's side. Otherwise she discreetly stays in the background. At least, most of the time. Recently she made the headlines when she extolled the virtues of a Harem.

The harem was a school for members of the Ottoman dynasty and a teaching facility, where women were prepared for life," she said in early March. Critics blasted her for palliating a time when women were kept as sex slaves and had no rights.

► The eldest son: Ahmet Burak Erdogan (36) The Erdogan first-born became a big figure few years ago in the seafreight business. He has the big shipping company Mecit Cetinkaya. Today Burak Erdogan is thought to hold 99 percent of MB-Shipping.

His fortune is estimated at least 80 million dollars. Fairytales are told about how he got the money to get into the shipping business. Again and again questions are raised as to whether he is favored in government transactions. In Istanbul, 1998, the Erdogan oldest son ran over the singer Sevim Tanürek, who died of her injuries shortly afterwards in hospital. Erdogan Junior committed a hit and run - he had no driver's license. When the trial began the perpetrator had suddenly disappeared. He couldn't be there because of a language course in England, it was said. Later the traffic evaluator changed his mind and changed the report: It was Tanürek herself who was to blame for the accident. The evaluator was appointed shortly thereafter by Erdogan to high office in the state shipping company. Ahmet is now regarded as having gone underground. Even at family celebrations and weddings, he does not show up.

► The youngest son: Necmettin Bilal Erdogan (35) Again and again the Erdogan-son shows up in the media in connection with dubious and criminal activities.

Corruption scandal 2013 The accusation: Bilal Erdogan obtained public land in downtown Istanbul for less than 500 million -- against its actual market value of one billion dollars. Supposedly Bilal paid a three million US dollar bribe. The judicial authorities have also implicated Bilal's Türgev Foundation, which is actually is no more than a network of private schools, in this regard. Allegedly the foundation received land through the intermediary of Erdogan's AKP party without paying for it. Bilal Erdogan was supposed to be indicted, even threatened with imprisonment. His father, then prime minister, had the prosecutor unceremoniously relieved from his duties.

The opposition demanded the resignation of Erdogan as prime minister. This was prompted by alleged recordings of telephone conversations with Bilal, which appeared on the Internet. The calls took place mainly on 17 December, 2013. On the day dozens suspects from the ruling AKP party were arrested under suspicion of corruption. On the recordings allegedly Erdogan warned his son to remove the cash he kept in his house. "Put away everything that is in your house," the voice of the older caller says in a telephone conversation, the time is given as 8:02 in the morning. "Your money is safe," replies the younger voice. In another conversation, the time is given as 23:15, and the younger voice says that 30 million euros could be not "shed." Then asks: "Do you want some money left with you?" In a fifth and last call the older voice warns: "Son, you're bugged."

Trading ISIS oil The British newspaper The Guardian revealed last year that Turkish businessmen had concluded lucrative contracts with the ISIS terrorists: At least ten million dollars a week was flowing into the war chests of the killer militia - more than 500 million dollars a year. One of these businessmen was thought to be Bilal Erdogan.

Since September 2015, he has been living with his family in Bologna, Italy - officially to finish writing his doctoral dissertation. Since March the authorities there are investigating him on the subject of money laundering. The accusation: He is there to whitewash the family fortune, which comes from the corruption scandal.

► The oldest daughter Esra Erdogan (34)
Esra Erdogan also was involved in the 2013 corruption scandal. She sits next to her brother on the board of the dubious Türgev Foundation. Her husband could be the new Turkish Prime Minister after Davutoglu's resignation. He is considered a prime candidate and a faithful companion of his father-in-law.

Erdogan himself had arranged the marriage of his daughter with the political hopeful.

► The youngest daughter: Sümeyye Erdogan (30) While the other children are barely interested in politics, Sümeye was already at age 25 appointed honorary consultant to her father - she accompanies him on trips abroad and acts as an interpreter for him. So far, her path to the Turkish Parliament is barred because wearing headscarves in the parliament is prohibited.

Incidentally, the tuition fees for the Erdogan sprouts at US universities, which at times amounted to EUR 100 000 per year, were paid by the textile entrepreneurs Remzi Gür. An act of friendship, as stated on the part of the family. Speculation about any quid-pro-quo has occurred only behind closed doors

"When the government allows 70 Al-Nusra Front terrorists to cross the Turkish borders into Syria's Aleppo concurrent with the extension of the ceasefire by the Syrian army for two more days, it becomes evident to everyone that it is a war-monger," the Arabic service of Russia Today quoted Mohammad al-Zin as saying on Wednesday.

He pointed to many instances of ceasefire violations in Syria by terrorists, and said, "There have been many instances of ceasefire violations by Al-Nusra Front and its allies in Idlib and Aleppo provinces; the ceasefire violations came after the Syrian army sustained heavy losses and damages because of its commitment to the ceasefire," the Syrian writer added.

Al-Zin reiterated that the Syrian opposition forces should take the opportunity of the ceasefire in the Arab country in order to help all sides reach a comprehensive agreement for putting an end to the Syrian crisis.

On Tuesday, informed sources said that a large number of terrorists have crossed the Turkish border with Syria's Northern province of Aleppo to join their al-Nusra Front comrades.

"A 70-member-group of terrorists, trained and supplied in Turkey, have entered Anadan in the territories of Northern Aleppo in groups to join the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front," Syria's Peace Coordination Center in Hmeimim said, adding, "The fresh terrorists have brought with themselves three vehicles loaded with ammunition and weapons."

"Al-Nusra Front's terrorists' artillery units continued to shell two neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ameriyeh and the airport of al-Neireb," the center said, adding, "Handarat refugee camp also came under the mortar shelling of al-Nusra Front."

Also yesterday, informed sources in Aleppo city announced that at least 146 civilians have been killed and over 1,103 others wounded in terrorist groups' brutal shelling of residential areas, hospitals and shopping centers across the Northern city of Aleppo in the last 10 days, city sources announced.

"52 children, 33 women and 61 men were among the killed civilians in the 10-day-long attacks of the terrorist groups," the sources said.

"Over 432 children, 356 women and 315 men were injured in the rocket and mortar attacks on non-military areas in the city," the sources added.

"Over 2,300 cases of attacks by the terrorist groups of al-Nusra Front, al-Shamiyeh Front, Ahrar al-Sham and the Free Syrian Army were carried out on the city districts," they said.

Saudi whistleblower Mujtahid, who is believed to be a member of or have a well-connected source in the royal family, revealed that the country's Crown Prince Muhammad bin Nayef is addicted to narcotics.

Whistleblower Reveals Addiction of Saudi Crown Prince

"Muhammad bin Nayef is addicted to drugs and has been treated several times in Europe when his father was alive," Mujtahid wrote on his tweeter page on Monday.

He also said that the al-Saud family is under the influence of major drug cartels.

"What is announced about discovering and seizing drugs in Saudi Arabia is less than 10 percent of the real amount of narcotics trafficked into the country because most of the drug traffickers enjoy immunity in Saudi Arabia," Mujtahid said.

Every two days, on average, the Saudi government executes someone for drug-related offenses — while its own princes are caught in airports with tons of drugs.

Saudi prince Abdel Mohsen bin Walid bin Abdulaziz was caught in an airport in Lebanon last October with over two tons of drugs.

Lebanese security found 40 suitcases full of more than 4,000 pounds of amphetamine pills and cocaine on the prince’s private plane, which was on its way to Saudi capital city Riyadh. It was the largest smuggling operation ever foiled by Beirut International Airport security.

In fact, just hours after the Saudi prince was caught with thousands of pounds of drugs, a Pakistani drug smuggler was executed by the Saudi government.

Roughly half (47 percent) of people executed in Saudi Arabia are killed for drug-related offenses, according to Amnesty International. From August 2014 to August 2015, Amnesty documented 175 Saudi executions, an average of one every two days.

The Middle East is burning in the fire of violent extremism fueled by a terrorist group which professes its desire to establish an Islamic Caliphate.

Prof. Madhav Nalapat: International Wahhabism Should Be Criminalized and Excommunicated
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13950218000123

The ISIL terrorists, misleadingly calling themselves the representatives of Muslims worldwide, have killed innumerable civilians, beheaded people of various nationalities and raped hundreds of innocent Muslim and non-Muslim girls, especially the Ezadi women living in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Noted Muslim scholars, both Sunni and Shiite, and the majority of Muslim world leaders, have denounced the felonies of ISIL and made it clear that this faction doesn’t have anything to do with Islam and its edicts.

In an interview with Fars News Agency, an Indian economist and author asserted that the ISIL terrorists belong to a Wahhabi lineage and are backed by the powers that propped up Wahhabi ideology since the Soviet war on Afghanistan.

“Since the 1980s, there has developed within the member states of NATO a cult of Wahhabi Jihadism, which has been celebrated ever since such individuals were armed, trained and funded by NATO powers to do battle against the USSR in Afghanistan,” said Prof. Madhav Das Nalapat, the editorial director of The Sunday Guardian newspaper.

“Textbooks inculcating hatred and a predisposition towards violence were designed in US universities to ensure that young minds globally turned towards Wahhabism. Since the 1980s, an estimated $380 billion has been expended by individuals, agencies and countries to build up the Wahhabi international,” he added.

Mr. Nalapat warns that a global coalition, including Iran, should be framed to roll back and eliminate ISIL, otherwise, this terrorist sect has a capacity to expand globally.

“Should a global coalition not get formed against ISIL and other components of the Wahhabi international, a coalition which includes Iran, will this evil spread within populations... The potential of ISIL to spread its cells across entire countries rises with each month that the organization continues to have a safe haven carved out of parts of Iraq and Syria,” he cautioned.

Prof. Madhav Nalapat is a recognized academician in India, and recently attended the International Congress on 17,000 Iranian Terror Victims in Tehran. Aside from his editorial role at The Sunday Guardian, Nalapat is currently the Vice-Chair of Manipal University’s Advanced Research Group. He has been a Professor of Geopolitics and UNESCO Peace Chair at the same university. His writings have appeared on The Pakistan Observer and Organizer. Prof. Nalapat is a distinguished fellow at the University of Georgia’s Center for International Trade and Security and comments on the Middle East and Indian subcontinent issues.

Prof. Nalapat shared his views with FNA on the roots of ISIL, its prompt growth in the recent months and the strategies that need to be adopted in dealing with it. (Transcript follows.)

Turkey: Between Autocracy and a Maidan
http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/05/turkey-between-autocracy-and-maidan.html

The tensions in relations among the top leadership of the Republic of Turkey have reached their logical denouement. On Wednesday night, after a personal meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced his resignation.

The desire for absolute power Ahmet Davutoglu assumed the post of prime minister of Turkey in August, 2014. Shortly before, he became the leader of the Justice and Development Party. Also in August 2014, the post of presidency was taken by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the former head of the country’s government. It is worth noting a particular feature of Turkey’s constitutional system. The head of state is the president, while the prime minister is considered to be the most influential figure in the country . This is at least how it should be in theory, but in practice Erdogan left the post of head of government for the presidency with no intention of becoming a mere formal figure.

The Turkish president went even further in strengthening his own power to the point that it beacme necessary to amend the country’s constitution. For his part in not wishing to cut his authority in favor of the president, Davutoglu criticized the draft of the new constitution. But now, as Ahmet Davutoglu has stated that he is leaving his post (including his leadership of the party), the path to concentrating all executive power in the hands of Erdogan has been opened.

The confrontation between the president and prime minister The reason for discord between the prime minister and president was not only the dispute over the country’s leadership. The views of the republic’s foremost men have diverged on a number of key issues. Davutoglu, being in fact a pro-Western politician, strove for closer cooperation with the European Union. The progress on the visa agreement with the EU is largely to his credit. Erdogan, on the other hand, preferred to settle with blackmailing Europeans in order to obtain various concessions for Turkey. The full integration of the republic into the European community, including the transfer of authority to supranational EU organs, are hardly included in the plans of the wayward president. Davutoglu and Erdogan’s views also differed concerning relations with the Kurds. The prime minister believed that it was necessary to negotiate, while the president considered the issue one to be resolved by force.

Erdogan’s actions aimed at stifling free speech in the country also failed to find full support on the part of Ahmet Davutoglu. Perhaps the last straw in the confrontation between the president and prime minister was the news that US President Barack Obama agreed to hold a face to face meeting with Davutoglu. Given the US leadership’s relatively cool attitude towards Recep Erdogan, the meeting between Obama and the Turkish premier could have appeared to be unambiguous, but with the support of the US, Davutoglu had the chance to significantly strengthen his position.

The road to autocracy The consequences of the Turkish prime minister’s resignation will certainly have an impact on the domestic political life of Turkey. If the new prime minister, whose name will be announced on May 22, will be more flexible, then it can be assumed that Erdogan will now be able to push through his draft constitution to transform Turkey into a presidential republic. One of the main contenders for the post of head of the cabinet of minsters is none other than the Ministry of Energy, Berat Albayrak who, coincidentally, is Erdogan’s son in law.

But a malleable prime minster is only half of the affair. In order for Recep Erdogan’s constitutional reforms to be adopted, he needs significant support in parliament. While the president wields practically full support from his Justice and Development Party, this is not enough to amend the country’s constitution. The ruling party does not possess the necessary number of seats in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and, moreover, public opinion is not yet ready to accept a presidential system of governance.

Whether Erdogan will wait for new elections or will seek to effect amendments to the constitution by other means is not entirely clear in the ongoing scenario. On the one hand, the policy of stifling media and actively fighting dissent could lead to Erdogan’s desires result. But on the other hand, the same actions could drag Turkey into a series of unpleasant consequences.

The ghost of a color revolution Like before, Erdogan is not in favor among his Western partners. By eliminating his relatively pro-Western rival in the struggle for maximum authority in the country, the president of Turkey might have just turned the European and American political elites further against him. Recep Tayyip Erdogan already experienced mass protests in 2013 when he was prime minster. The formal cause of the unrest was the cutting down of trees in Istanbul Park, but in reality the protests involved a reaction against Erdogan’s policies. If cutting down trees in a park led to protests which lasted nearly all summer, then the current situation might provide more than enough reasons for the “coloring” of moods in the republic.

Of course, this requires as a minimum the desire of Western partners to incite such as well as daring opponents ready to challenge Erdogan. The rest is just a matter of technique. However, it is worth noting that the victim in the current situation, Ahmet Davutoglu, is quite unlikely to become a person who would want to lead protests. Davutoglu stated in his resignation: “No matter what happens, I will keep my promise. I will remain loyal to the president until my last day. No one will hear any bad words directed at Recep Tayyip Erdogan [from me].”

In the event of serious protests in the country, Erdogan is unlikely to be spineless. His recent actions have made this clear. Yet another issue is whether or not the president of Turkey will be able to deal with a number of problems and whether or not his Western “friends” will seriously undertake such an affair and, parallel with protests exacerbating the Kurdish-Turkish conflict, will organize their subordinate, motley contingent in neighboring Syria and order it to spread the chaos to the Republic of Turkey.

Specialist on Turkey and director of the analytic agency “Middle East - Caucasus”, Stanislav Tarasov, believes: “Domestically, there is a real, ongoing civil war with the Kurds, and the economic situation is critical. The ruling class in Turkey feels that it is isolated.”

The political scientist and leader of the United Youth Front, Nikolay Shlyamin, expressed: “I would not be surprised if Ankara declares that the US is an unreliable partner. In principle, there are reasons for this, because the situation with the Kurds is rather ambiguous.”

Whether or not such a dangerous scenario for Turkey will be realized and whether Erdogan will be able to smoothly strengthen his power in the country will make itself known in time. However, it is safe to say that significant changes in the life of the Republic of Turkey are inevitable.

The framework of Turkey's democratic government is on the verge of collapse; the country remains in the grip of chaos due to the political ambitions of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ahmet Insel, a columnist from the opposition magazine Birikim, told Sputnik.

Erdogan Regime Has Endangered Turkey's 'Democratic Architecture'
http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160511/1039428463/turkey-erdogan-democracy.html

In an interview with Sputnik, Ahmet Insel, a Turkish opposition columnist, slammed the political ambitions of Turkey's President Erdogan, which he claims have caused Ankara to backslide on its commitment to democratic principles, adding that his country's political crisis shows no signs of abating.

The columnist was interviewed almost a week after an unknown attacker tried to shoot and kill Can Dundar, the editor-in-chief of the opposition Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, in front of a court house in Istanbul, according to media reports.

"Such incidents are a clear proof that all the nails, which earlier held together the democratic architecture in Turkey, are already rotten, and that its collapse is just a matter of time," Insel said.

He also pointed the finger at Erdogan, whose "political ambitions and projects turned the figure of the President into the main source of instability in Turkey."

Insel also berated Erdogan for being behind the resignation of Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, which was announced on May 6.

"By insisting on the presidential system of ruling, Erdogan, who should be the main guarantor of the Constitution, in fact violated its provisions. This very fact is sufficient to recognize the depth of the crisis and the chaos that is currently in place in Turkey. Well, the fish rots from the head," Insel pointed out.

As for the shooting incident, it occurred after a case was heard regarding the publication of journalists' stories about the involvement of Turkish intelligence services in transporting weapons to Syria.

The assailant came up to Dundar when he was speaking with a journalist and fired at least two shots at him. Dundar managed to escape unharmed.
"You're a traitor!" — the shooter is said to have screamed during the incident, according to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News.

Police standing nearby immediately intervened and arrested the assailant. In the immediate aftermath of the attack, it was revealed that another reporter, Yagiz Senkal, was wounded during the incident.

As his rhetoric turns increasingly hostile following the resignation of Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has described the EU as a safe haven for political wings representing terrorist groups.

From Bad to Worse: Erdogan Calls EU Safe Haven for Terrorist Groups
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160511/1039403022/Erdogan-Calls-EU-Safe-Haven-Terrorist.html

Following the resignation of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, whom many in the West saw as the more liberal face of the Turkish government, Erdogan has increased his paranoid rhetoric. During a speech in Ankara, he called the EU a "safe haven for political wings of the terrorist groups," reiterating his displeasure with Brussels, a city that permits protesters, including those of Kurdish descent, to set up tents in front of the European Union headquarters.

The Turkish president seeks, almost to the point of demanding, that the EU allow visa-free travel for Turkish citizens. This demand was met in the EU with a demand to change Turkish law, in particular, that which specifies Ankara's definition of terrorism.

Erdogan, currently at war with Kurds (including the PKK, or the Kurdistan Workers Party) in his own country who have been fighting for an independent Kurdistan for some 30 years, is reluctant to change terrorism laws, as it would diminish his executive powers, including those he invokes to silence dissent among journalists and academics critical of his administration.

The EU, the United States and Turkey consider the PKK to be a terrorist group. The EU has allowed for PKK sympathizers to set up a tent camp in Brussels, later refusing to move them after increasingly angry demands by Erdogan.

The current dispute began when the EU addressed Turkey in what is now known as the EU-Turkey migrant deal, asking Erdogan to take back all asylum seekers that transited Turkey on their way to illegally cross European borders. Erdogan sought favors, one of which was the visa agreement. Remarkably, the outcome so far is neither a solution to the EU migrant crisis, nor visa-free travel for Turks, but instead a rapidly descending spiral of diplomatic claims and counter-claims.

Turkish Police Confirm Capture of Alleged Killer of Russian SU-24 Pilot

http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160401/1037313423/turkey-russia-su24-killer.html

Turkish police confirmed that the alleged killer of the downed Russian Su-24 bomber jet was detained.

Alparslan Celik, who has claimed he killed the pilot parachuting from the Russian Su-24 bomber jet downed over Syria, has been detained in the city of Izmir, a local police source said Friday.

"Alparslan Celik has been detained and is currently being held in custody," the police source told RIA Novosti.

The Russian Su-24 was shot down by a Turkish F-16 jet over Syria on November 24, falling 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Turkish border. The crew of the plane ejected and one pilot was killed by fire from the ground, according to the Russian General Staff. The co-pilot survived.

Currently, the alleged killer of the pilot of the Su-24 shot down in Syria gunman Alparslan Celik is in custody, he told RIA Novosti source in the Izmir police. Other details of the agency not reported.

ANKARA, April 1 - RIA Novosti, Fedor Smirnov. Action Alparslan Celik previously taken the responsibility for the murder of Oleg Peshkov , Russian pilot of the Su-24 shot down a Turkish F-16 on the territory of Syria, indeed detained in Izmir in western Turkey, confirmed the RIA Novosti source in the city police.

Turkey’s decision not to charge Alparslan Celik, the suspected killer of a Russian pilot of the Su-24 fighter jet downed by the Turkish Air Force over Syria, indicates that Ankara’s relations with Moscow will remain sour in foreseeable future, according to a report by the US private intelligence firm Stratfor on Wednesday.

Not Charging Su-24 Pilot's Killer 'Bad' for Turkey-Russia Reconciliation
http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160511/1039444872/turkey-russia-celik-stratfor.html

On Monday, the Turkish prosecutor’s office decided not to charge Celik citing lack of evidence.

"Turkey's decision to withdraw this political gift to Russia demonstrates a hardened stance that will make reconciliation between the countries unlikely anytime soon," the report stated.

On November 24, 2015, a Turkish F-16 fighter shot down the Russian Su-24 combat jet over Syria, which fell 2.5 miles from the Turkish border. The crew of the plane ejected and one of the pilots, Oleg Peshkov, was killed by ground fire, while the second pilot survived and was later rescued.

Celik was arrested alongside 13 others in the Turkish city of Izmir in early April on charges of illegal gun possession. The suspect previously said he did not shoot at Peshkov, but had accepted the responsibility for the killing as a commander of a militant group.

Celik insisted he had repeatedly ordered his men to take the Russian pilot prisoner, and not to shoot at him.

A man suspected of killing the pilot of a Russian warplane downed in Syria last November was cleared of all charges of murder by a Turkish court.

Suspected Turkish Killer of Russian Pilot to Walk Away Scot-Free

Turkish ultranationalist Alparslan Celik who initially claimed that he killed the Russian pilot was arrested alongside 13 others in the Turkish city of Izmir in early April on charges of illegal possession of firearms. While he accepted the responsibility for the killing as a commander of a militant group, Celik insisted he had repeatedly ordered his men to take the Russian pilot prisoner instead of gunning him down.

Murat Ustündağ, Celik’s lawyer, told Sputnik that the public prosecutor handling the case decided to drop the charges after becoming convinced that there’s simply not enough evidence to back up the accusations.

"The pilot’s death could’ve been caused by shrapnel fragments to the head, internal bleeding or the four bullets fired from the ground that hit him. The videos posted on YouTube show that the distance between my client and the Russian pilot parachuting to the ground was simply too great for the former to shoot at the latter. Also, imagine a squad of 500 simultaneously firing their guns. How can you determine which of the firearms used fired those four bullets? And even if you can find that gun, there’s no way to determine its owner," Ustündağ said.

The Russian Su-24 combat plane was shot down by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet over Syria on November 24, 2015, and fell 2.5 miles from the Turkish border. The crew of the plane ejected and one of the pilots, Oleg Peshkov, was killed by small arms fire from the ground, while the second pilot survived and was later rescued.

Russia's agriculture watchdog announced a temporary ban on the imports of Turkish lettuce.

Russia's agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said Wednesday it will impose temporary restrictions on imports of two types of lettuce from Turkey starting May 16.

"Due to the discovery of a quarantine subject — Western flower thrips — in green leaf lettuce and Iceberg lettuce arrived to Russia from Turkey, Rosselkhoznadzor imposes from May 16 temporary restrictions on imports, including through third countries, of this produce originated in Turkey," Rosselkhoznadzor said in a statement.

Turkey's federal expenditure on Syrian and Iraqi refugees has reached $10 billion with the same amount provided by local authorities and non-governmental organizations, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday.

Claims Total Spending on Refugees in Turkey Reaches $20Bln
http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160511/1039447450/turkey-refugees-no-money.html

Turkey has received no funding from the European Union to-date despite providing all that is necessary for the refugees, he added.

"We acted as defenders for 3 million people who had fled from tyranny and violence, we spent over $10 billion on refugees. Given the assistance of local budgets and non-governmental organizations, overall spending reached $20 billion," Erdogan said, speaking at a meeting of the army chiefs of Balkan countries in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Saudi Arabia will send ground forces to Syria only if the United States decides to put boots on the ground, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir said in an interview with a French television channel.

Last month, Washington announced sending 250 US troops in addition to 50 special operations forces already on the ground to help train local militants in Syria to fight Daesh.

"If the United States sends ground troops into Syria to fight Daesh, Saudi Arabia would be prepared to send special forces alongside those troops, but we will not be sending troops unilaterally," the minister told France 24 on Tuesday.

The United States and the Arab Gulf monarchy are part of an international coalition of some 60 nations that have been launching airstrikes at positions of Islamist militants in Syria since August 2014.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz is in talks Wednesday (May 11) with Volkan Bozkır, Turkish Minister of European Union Affairs as more cracks appeared in the EU-Turkey migrant deal, with Turkey's anti-terror laws proving a major sticking point.

Erdogan's Refusal to Amend Anti-Terror Law Sends EU Migrant Deal Into Chaos
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160511/1039448053/turkey-eu-deal-chaos.html

Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu brokered the deal with the EU to allows for "irregular migrants" — those not meeting the criteria for asylum in the EU — to be returned to Turkey, in exchange one-for-one for Syrian refugees to be relocated from Turkey to EU member states.

In return, Turkish citizens would be allowed visa-free travel within the Schengen area and Turkey's accession into the EU would be accelerated. Davutoglu — who has since been sacked by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan — demanded visa-free access be agreed by the end of June.

Part of the deal is that Turkey passes legislation to meet 72 demands from the EU, covering various areas, including a loosening of its controversial anti-terror law that has been used to target journalists and academics, a condition which Erdogan has refused to commit to, according to German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere.

Quoted in the German Bild newspaper, de Maiziere said Erdogan was: "not ready to meet the criteria.

'Not Fulfilled' In a sign that Erdogan is increasing the pressure on the EU, one of his advisers, Burhan Kuzu, tweeted:

"If they make a wrong decision, we will send off the refugees," by which he meant that if visa-free travel was refused, then the migrant-swap deal would be off, potentially releasing a flood of migrants across the Aegean Sea.

Meanwhile, Schulz is due to have talks in Strasbourg with Bozkır, amid severe criticism of the deal within the European Parliament.

Lawmakers have said they will block the deal on visa-free travel unless its conditions are met. However, with the June deadline set by Turkey looking shaky, Schulz is attempting to push the deadline back to October.

He told German broadcaster Deutschlandfunk Wednesday (May 11):

"My task is to check if the if the legal requirements for a parliamentary discussion are fulfilled. My result is: they are not fulfilled."

Liberals & Democrats group leader in the European Parliament Guy Verhofstadt, is particularly concerned by Turkish anti-terrorism legislation, which is being used to silence Turkish and foreign journalists who are critical of Erdogan.

"Erdogan should show his goodwill by dropping charges against the German comedian Jan Bohmermann and letting the Dutch journalist Ebru Umar return home. He should also stop prosecuting over 1800 other journalists."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that the country's ambassador to Bangladesh had been recalled over the recent execution of Motiur Rahman Nizami, a local Islamist leader accused of war crimes.

Turkey Recalls Envoy From Bangladesh Over Execution of Islamist Leader
http://sputniknews.com/politics/20160512/1039504859/turkey-recalls-ambassador-bangladesh.html

Nizami, 73, who led the Jamaat-e-Islami political party, was hanged at the central jail of the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka just after midnight local time on Wednesday (18:01 GMT Tuesday).

"I want to share with you my deep grief over Nizami's execution. I believe that he did not commit any crimes for which he deserved such a punishment. We hope the Bangladesh government will make more fair decisions in future. We have recalled our ambassador to Dhaka because of this case. He has already landed in Istanbul. We have not heard any condemnation from the European Union over the execution. Why? Because the [man who was] executed was a Muslim scientist," Erdogan said in Ankara.

Nizami was sentenced to death in October 2014. The Islamist leader was charged with war crimes for atrocities committed during the 1971 war for Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan. During the war, Nizami allegedly headed al-Badra, a pro-Pakistani paramilitary organization, responsible for the brutal murders of secular pro-independence intellectuals.

In 2013, the Bangladesh Supreme Court declared the Jamaat-e-Islami party to be illegal. Several other members of Jamaat-e-Islami have been sentenced to death for war crimes.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned on Wednesday NATO's insufficient military presence in the Black Sea and urged the Alliance to enhance cooperation in the region.

NATO Should Not Be Part of Black Sea Security Mechanism’ - Turkish General
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160512/1039504739/turkey-black-sea-nato.html

NATO’s engagement in the area would destabilize the security mechanism established by the 1936 Montreux Convention, retired Turkish Air Force Lt. Gen. Erdogan Karakus said.

According to him, the security issues in the region should be tackled in full accordance with the document and tacking into account the interests of Black Sea nations, particularly Russia.

"The Black Sea should be turned into the sea of stability. I told the NATO secretary general that you are absent in the Black Sea and that is why it has nearly become a Russian lake. We should perform our duty as we are the countries with access to the Black Sea. If we do not take action, history will not forgive us," Erdogan said in Istanbul.

NATO’s presence in the Black Sea should comply with the Montreux Convention, Karakus told Sputnik.

"The legal mechanism established by the document is aimed to maintain security for regional nations as well as create conditions to improve relations between them. It is not clear why Erdogan made this statement," he added.

As for Turkey’s interests, the Montreux Conventions is more important than any other documents and treaties, Karakus pointed out.

According to him, all Black Sea countries should cooperate in accordance with the Convention.

"Maintaining security in the Black Sea is one of the most important tasks for regional countries. Up to now, this has been possible thanks to the Montreux Convention. No one should violate it," Karakus said.

"It is unacceptable that non-Black Sea nations are involved in regional security issues. Russian-Turkish ties should be improved as well as cooperation in the Black Sea," he concluded.

Military Helicopter Crash Kills Both Pilots in Southeastern Turkey

http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160513/1039543363/crash-helicopter-turkey.html

A military plane crashed in southeastern Turkey, killing both pilots, the Turkish General Staff said Friday.

ANKARA (Sputnik) – The Cobra aircraft, taking part in the counterterrorist operation, crashed at 2:50 GMT in the Hakkari province due to a technical failure, according to the general staff. Both pilots were killed in the crash.

The majority of the province’s population is Kurdish. Tensions between Ankara and the Kurds escalated in July 2015 as fighting between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the Kurdish pro-independence organization considered to be terrorists by Ankara, and the Turkish army resumed. Ankara has imposed several round-the-clock curfews in Kurdish-populated towns, preventing civilians from fleeing the regions where the military operations are taking place.

Tensions between Ankara and the Kurds escalated in July 2015 as fighting between the PKK, the Kurdish pro-independence organization considered to be terrorists by Ankara, and the Turkish army resumed.

"Six of our comrades died and eight were injured during a shootout with members of the PKK separatist terrorist organization which began on May 13 at [01:50 GMT]," the statement read.

Six militants were killed in the shootout, according to the statement.

Ankara has also imposed several round-the-clock curfews in Kurdish-populated towns, preventing civilians from fleeing the regions where the military operations are taking place.

The Turkish army shelled a district of the Nusaybin city in southern Turkey using munitions which are likely to contain the banned substance of phosphorus, according to a Kurdish source.

The Turkish army used munitions containing phosphorus against the Kurdish-inhabited city of Nusaybin in the country’s south, a Kurdish source told Sputnik on Sunday.

"The Turkish army shelled a district of the Nusaybin city in southern Turkey using munitions which are likely to contain the banned substance of phosphorus," the source said.

Nusaybin is located in the Mardin province, where two Turkish servicemen were killed during a raid against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), outlawed in the country, earlier in the day.

White phosphorus munitions are used in smoke and incendiary munitions. White phosphorus is not specifically banned, but the 1983 UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons bans the use of incendiary weapons in indiscriminate attacks against civilians.

The EU was forced to ask Turkey for help because of its inability to pursue a concerted migration policy, German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel told reporters in Berlin.

Migrant Crisis: German Vice Chancellor Voices Why EU Asked Turkey for Help
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160513/1039555776/germany-migrants-crisis.html

“We turned to Erdogan for help because we did not have a single policy on migrants. I wish we had one and had evenly distributed the 1.5 million migrants who arrived in Europe last year among 500 million Europeans. The problem is that they were distributed among just three countries. That’s why I don’t think there is any alternative to a concerted European policy on migration,” Gabriel said.

Sigmar Gabriel, who is also leader of the Social Democrats, added that such a policy should include “a legal opportunity to migrate to Europe” and provide for an even distribution of incoming migrants among all members of the European Union.

In mid-March, the EU and Turkey agreed to a deal under which Ankara pledged to take back all undocumented migrants who arrive in the EU through its territory in exchange for Syrian refugees residing in Turkey.

In return, the 28-member bloc promised to accelerate Turkey's EU accession bid and introduce a visa-free regime between the two sides.

Turkey has already fulfilled the bulk of the requirements needed for the free travel deal with the five most problematic criteria still remaining.

On Friday, Erdogan rejected the EU call to revise Turkey's national anti-terrorism laws, warning that pressing Ankara to do so would lead to a split in relations.

The international humanitarian group Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, or Doctors Without Borders) on Friday published an open letter to the European Union, saying the bloc has violated its moral and legal responsibilities, by signing a refugee swap deal with Ankara.

MSF Says EU Violates Responsibilities by Signing Refugee Deal With Turkey
http://sputniknews.com/society/20160513/1039544443/msf-deal-eu-turkey.html

According to the letter, the deal creates a dangerous precedent, showing that any country could "buy their way out of providing asylum" that poses a threat to the concept of refugee itself.

"The 'EU-Turkey deal' effectively outsources caring for these people to Turkey in exchange for, amongst other things, a multi-billion euro financial aid package. In an era of the greatest displacement of humanity in decades, this is a historic abdication of your moral and legal responsibilities," the letter reads.

It was added in the letter that the agreement threatened "the right of all people to seek asylum" and violated Brussels' obligation to assist each man asking for protection.

In mid-March, the European Union and Ankara agreed on a deal under which Turkey pledged to take back all undocumented migrants who arrive in the European Union through its territory in exchange for legal Syrian refugees currently residing in Turkey, on a one-for-one basis. In return, the 28-member bloc pledged to accelerate the Turkish EU accession bid and introduce a visa-free regime between Turkey and the Schengen area.

Bulgaria's government has approved the allocation of 6.2 million leva (some $3.6 million) to the construction of an anti-migrant fence on the Bulgarian-Turkish border, the government's press service said in a press release on Friday.

Bulgaria Allocates $3.6Mln to Anti-Migrant Fence on Border With Turkey
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160513/1039556957/bulgaria-fence-turkey.html

In response to the growing number of migrants reaching their territories, some European states, such as Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovenia, have announced the construction of fences, while other states, including Austria and Germany, have toughened their migration policies.

"[As many as] 6.2 million leva [has been allocated] to continue building a temporary fence on the Bulgarian-Turkish border in the region of Burgas. The facility is crucial to counter migratory pressure which has been steadily increasing in recent years on the Bulgarian-Turkish border, and it seeks to protect the state border and control of refugee waves," the press release read.

In mid-March, Brussels and Ankara agreed on a deal under which Turkey pledged to take back all undocumented migrants who arrive in the European Union through its territory in exchange for Syrian refugees accommodated in Turkey, on a one-for-one basis. In return, the 28-member bloc pledged to accelerate the Turkish EU accession bid and introduce a visa-free regime between Turkey and the Schengen area.

Russia urged Turkey to prosecute all responsible for the death of Russian pilot
http://katehon.com/news/russia-urged-prosecute-all-responsible-death-russian-pilot

Moscow has demanded Ankara to find and prosecute all those responsible for the death of a Russian pilot whose fighter jet was shot down by the Turkish military on the Syrian border last November.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova's demand on Friday came after Turkish authorities dropped all charges against main suspect in the killing, Alparsalan Celik.

Addressing reporters in Moscow, Zakharova called on Turkish authorities to “search and hold accountable all involved in the murder of the Russian pilot” identified as Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Peshkov.

Turkish fighter jets shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 bomber on the Syrian border on November 24, 2015, sparking a crisis in their diplomatic ties.

The crew of the plane ejected but one of the pilots was killed by Turkish nationalists on the ground as he was parachuting down. The other pilot was rescued by the Syrian army.

Zakharova voiced serious concern over the fact that Ankara has not charged Celik. A court in the Aegean coastal city of Izmir dropped all charges against him on Monday.

Celik had been arrested along with 13 other men at a restaurant in the Turkish province of Hatay after saying his group killed the Russian pilot.

Aegean Sea issue and refugee crisis (Graph - Map)
http://katehon.com/article/aegean-sea-issue-and-refugee-crisis

Turkey-Greece Affairs Over the last few years, Turkey has totally forgotten the term “good faith bi-lateral affairs”.
Even when their ex-Prime Minister Ecevit officially announced that they do not have any territorial claims against Greece, their actions proved the exact opposite. Diplomacy channels speaking lies while military channels prove the reality.

Conflict Area*Aegean Sea Under International Law of the Sea, Greece has extended its territorial waters around the Archipelagos to 6 nautical miles from the Act of September 1936. Greek territorial waters thus cover 43.5% of the Aegean Sea, while Turkish territorial waters represent only 7.5%.

If the territorial waters of the two countries were brought to 12 nautical miles, 71.5% of the Aegean Sea would be under Greek sovereignty, and 8.7% Turkish. If the two countries established Exclusive Economic Zones, the remaining space (19.7%) would fall entirely under the jurisdiction of Athens.

Also, the United States opposes Greece's right to extend it to 12 nautical miles, as this will interfere in US’ naval operations in the Mediterranean.

The issue on the size of territorial waters has consequences for the airspace, which in general covers the territorial waters. Athens considers that its airspace measures 10 nautical miles around its territory but Ankara only recognizes 6 nautical miles.

Hundreds of billions of dollars worth of oil and gas are trapped under the seabed around Greece (Aegean sea, Ionian sea). Turkey is deliberately being provocative in order to be able to proceed with mutual exploitation and have economic benefits from these natural resources.

But where there is oil, gas, and minerals, there is always conflict.

Several countries are proposing ideas to stop the conflict between these two NATO countries, but strangely their ideas always involve Greece stepping back and Turkey stepping forward, in terms of sea borders-air borders (Flight Information Regions (FIR), - gas and oil benefits etc. As you can see on map Νρ. 2 below, this was another proposal in order to stop the two countries disputing over the Aegean. Cutting the Aegean almost in half, losing Dodecanese sea-air dominance and making the former “grey zones” of their hostile plans to be “legally” accepted and applied. The Turkish government has avoided stating exactly which islets it wishes to include in this category. On various occasions, Turkish governmental sources have indicated that islands such as Pserimos, Agathonisi, Fournoi and Gavdos(situated south of Crete) might be included.

In a 2004 publication by Turkish authors close to the Turkish military leadership, the following (among other, even smaller ones) were listed as potentially "grey" areas:

•Kalogeroi,
•Antipsara (west of the islands of Psara and Khios),
•Pontiko (between Samos and the Turkish coast),
•Fournoi,
•Arkoi,
•Agathonisi (Gaidaros),
•Pharmakonisi,
•Kalolimnos (near Imia),
•Pserimos,
•Gyali (between Kos and Nisyros),
•Kandheliousa (south of Kos),
•Sirina (SE of Astypalaia)

While Turkey has not made any attempt to challenge the Greek possession of these islands on the ground, the claims add to the number of minor military incidents, already numerous due to the 10-mile airspace and the FIR issues. The Turkish Air Force has reportedly adopted a policy of ignoring Greek claims to all airspace and territorial waters around such formations that it counts as grey zones.
According to Greek Military HQ, the number of airspace violations within the 6-mile limit recognised by Ankara rose sharply in 2006, as did the number of unauthorised Turkish military flights directly over the Greek islands. Renewed reports of systematic Turkish military flights directly over Greek islands like Pharmakonisi and Agathonisi are made often.

Turkey and the Refugee crisis Turkey has a huge responsibility towards Europe and the Middle East since her relationship with ISIS has proven to be more than friendly and co-operative. Thousands of people are entering Turkey in order to avoid war, although Turkey is creating much of the issues since Turkish Airlines have reportedly announced very low cost flights for immigrants to reach their country from North Africa in order to send them to Greece and Europe. Also, it is proven that many illegal immigrants of Turkish origin are being sent to Thrace in order to expand the Muslim-Turkish populations there, which is against various peace treaties.

According to sources, the Greek Prime Minister conveyed the government's dissatisfaction to the NATO Secretary General for the fact that the involvement of NATO has not yielded the expected result - the flow of refugees continues unabated in Turkey.

During the telephone conversation, the prime minister expressed his displeasure at the attitude of Ankara and stressed the need to adhere to commitments made to the neighboring country in the context of the Agreement on NATO activation and the EU agreement terms with Turkey. Mr. Tsipras had a similar telephone conversation with Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, asking for the immediate implementation of the agreement and support in logistical level.

Despite all the negative actions of Turkey, NATO and the EU applaud them for being a good ally and performing excellently during the refugee crisis. It seems that when you pretend to be the rooster (Erdogan), the chickens will bite the bait.

German Lawmaker Shocks Parliament by Reciting Poem Mocking Erdogan (Video)
http://sputniknews.com/world/20160513/1039574504/bundestag-erdogan-poem.html

Detlef Seif, a backbench member of Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, has caused a stir in Bundestag by reciting a satirical poem that mocked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as German MPs were debating the fate of the law that was invoked to prosecute the text's author.

The politician hailing from North Rhine-Westphalia did not recite the explicit satirical poem to support its author, comedian Jan Boehmermann, but rather to show that the text was insulting and lacked satirical merit.

"A person's honor is under attack here and the justice must decide if these statements are still covered by freedom of expression and press," Seif told fellow MPs, adding that he was not trying to defend Erdogan.

Yet other lawmakers did not think it was appropriate. Some gasped "unbelievable." Renate Künast of the Green Party called Seif's speech "embarrassing." Christian Flisek of the Social Democrats (SPD) observed that Seif could refrain from reciting the text in its entirety.

"Keep in mind that we are in the German parliament, and that even with quotations one should not forget this fact," Edelgard Bulmahn, a cive president of the Bundestag, told Seif.

The speech was broadcast live on national TV. The comedian uploaded Seif's speech to YouTube, turning the politician into an internet sensation. The footage has already been viewed more than 270,000 times.

The notorious poem has been at the heart of a diplomatic scandal between Germany and Turkey that has sparked an intense debate on the state of the freedom of speech in both countries.

The explicit satirical text was first recited on March 31. The Turkish president then demanded that Jan Boehmermann be sent to trial for insulting a foreign leader under a law (section 103 of the German criminal code).

Angela Merkel gave the green light to the proceedings against the comedian, much to public discontent. She now wants to repeal the law.

If found guilty, Boehmermann could spend up to three years in prison.

EXCLUSIVE: Daesh Terrorists Secretly Treated at Turkish Hospital (PHOTOS)

http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160513/1039561241/turkey-daesh-medical-assistance.html

Four wounded Daesh fighters have been treated at the Ersin Arslan regional hospital, located in the Turkish city of Gaziantep, an unnamed source told Sputnik. They were admitted on May 5, the medical worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added.

One of them, named Bagur Ferhad, is an Afghan national born in 1993, the source said.

"I examined Daesh fighters. They had gunshot wounds. None of them received life-threatening injuries," the medical worker detailed.

Earlier, Turkish forces opened fire when a group of foreign fighters tried to cross into Syria near Oğuzeli, a city in the Gaziantep province. Three militants were killed, 11 were injured. Four of them were brought to the Ersin Arslan regional hospital. No record of their stay has been made.

"I think that the hospital's authorities don't want the public to find out that these people received medical treatment here. Doctors and health workers working here don't want to treat Daesh fighters. Some of the doctors come from Kilis, a town that is daily shelled from Syrian territories under Daesh control," the source explained.

The Gaziantep province shares a 50-kilometer-long border with Syria. Its capital city, located less than 100 kilometers north of Aleppo, has long served as a staging post for those, who wanted to fight in the war-torn Arab country.

Turkey has long been suspected of offering medical assistance to the militants, who are fighting to overthrow Bashar al-Assad. Iraqi MP Mowaffak al-Rubaie told RT as much last December. "There is evidence that some of these high value individuals of Daesh when they get wounded in Iraq and Syria, they cross the border and get treated and operated on in Turkish hospitals," he lamented.

Dirty Games: Secret Docs Reveal Turkey Turns Blind Eye to Daesh Activities

http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160513/1039589716/turkey-documents-daesh-links.html

These 422 pages of classified documents contain blood-chilling information regarding terrorist activities in Turkey.

These documents classified as ‘secret’ material, contain huge amounts of information regarding the activities of Daesh militants in Kilis and Gaziantep.

They also show that all the crossings of thousands of terrorists at the Turkish-Syrian border were known to the Turkish authorities, and despite that, they did not take any action.

Erdem, commenting on this information, said that in Kilis, Gaziantep and across Turkey dangerous processes are taking place to which the government turns a blind eye. “I am speaking here as a deputy, whose duty is to control what is happening. The documents that I present to you, is a living proof of what kind of dirty games the AKP government is involved in.”

He showed the documents containing the phone records of one of the organizers of the terrorist attacks in Turkey, İlhami Balı, known in the ranks of the jihadists, as Abu Bakr.

“These entries recorded comprehensive information such as which hotel the terrorists are going to stay in, where they will wait for their car, which gas station they will use for refueling in a mosque in Kilis, how many people and who exactly would be responsible for the preparation of a terrorist attack."

“Despite the fact that all this information was in the hands of the authorities, the security forces had not carried out any operations to detain terrorists. I ask one very simple question: why were these terrorists not arrested?” Erdem pointed out.

The deputy further spoke about how the Safety Authority tapped and recorded all phone conversations of the terrorists.

“For example, Ilhami Bali asks his interlocutor: ‘How many people have crossed?’ He is wondering how many militants crossed the Turkish-Syrian border. At the other end of the line the man answered ‘175 crossed into Syria.’ He added, ‘No, I mean in the opposite direction.’ The man answers 1,128 people.”

“Do you understand what these figures mean? 1,128 jihadists crossing the border at the same time in a place known to intelligent agencies, but no one even thought to organize an operation to detain them. Control on the border areas is zero,” the deputy stressed.

The documents sent to the Municipality of Ankara Provincial Security Department, provide information showing that Ilham Bali is the organizer of terrorist attacks in Ankara and Suruç, and is also responsible for the collection of weapons and ammunition for Daesh.

According to Bali these documents contain hundreds of addresses, telephone conversations and other information. They also show that all the Daesh militants are being treated in Turkey; there are details of how much money is spent on maintenance and treatment of these jihadists in district hospitals.

“Prosecutors in Turkey have not yet opened a single judicial investigation regarding these hospitals, these doctors. Why are the authorities who arrest civilians for distributing leaflets at Taksim, turning a blind eye to the activities of terrorists and do not initiate operations against them?”

“This is not negligence; it is clearly a thought out, deliberate action strategy. You have all the necessary information, but you do not take any action. So, you, for whatever reasons, are covering the activities of a terrorist organization,” Bali stressed.

At the end of the press conference Eren Erdem stressed that he constantly receives death threats, but is not afraid to tell the truth, and intends to continue doing so in the future.

Report: US, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi to Launch Operation in Northern Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13950227001343

The Rai al-Youm website, edited by prominent Palestinian journalist Abdul Bari Atwan, on Monday quoted Mohib Shalati, a former major general with the Syrian army, as making the announcement on his Twitter account, presstv reported.

Shalati was himself citing the US State Department’s website as announcing that the US has agreed with Turkey to launch a massive military campaign in Northern Syria.

The campaign will be backed by American and Turkish airstrikes as well as Turkish artillery attacks, it said.

Shalati said a meeting had been held in Turkey last Monday with the participation of representatives from the CIA, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey as well as commanders of militant groups in Syria to coordinate the operation.

The report said the so-called “North Army” coalition will be completely financed by Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Shalati added that the force will include militants from Ahrar al-Sham, Failaq al-Sham, Jaysh al-Sham, Thuwar al-Sham, al-Jabha al-Shamiya and Nour al-Din al-Zenki, among others.

Turkey, he said, had told the militant groups that if they refuse to participate in the operations, they will be deprived of support and will be added to a terror list.

Shalati said the agreement entails transportation of forces and weaponry from Turkey to Syria’s Aleppo. The operation will be launched from several fronts in one to two weeks, he added.

According to the former general, more than 3,000 militants with advanced equipment will take part in the operation.

Turkey's intelligence agencies have warned about the possibility of terror attacks being carried out by militants from the Daesh jihadist group or the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in country's largest cities, including in the capital of Ankara, on May 19, local media reported Monday.

Turkish Intelligence Warns Country to Brace Itself for Terrorism on May 19
http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160516/1039694593/turkey-intelligence-daesh.html

On Thursday, Turkey celebrates the Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day, a national holiday dedicated to the beginning of Turkey's War of Independence, which also marks the birthday of the first president of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. A number of sports and mass events are usually held across the country on this date.

According to the Haberturk newspaper, at least 10 Daesh militants entered the Turkish province of Gaziantep through its border with Syria to prepare attacks in the largest Turkish cities, mostly in Ankara, which is expected to host the most important national celebrations and where Ataturk's mausoleum is located.

The Turkish authorities found almost 1,600 pounds of explosive materials that had allegedly been prepared by PKK militants to be used in terror attacks on Thursday, the newspaper reported.

In recent months, Turkey has been hit by numerous terror acts, with both Islamist, such as IS, prohibited in many countries, including Russia and the United Kingdom, and Kurdish militant groups allegedly responsible for the appalling atrocities.

Austrian Ambassador to Russia stated that the difficulties in the implementation of migrant swap deal reached in March between Brussels and Ankara creates "open questions".

Implementation of EU-Turkey Migrant Deal Leaves 'Open Questions'
http://sputniknews.com/world/20160516/1039692137/turkey-austria-eu-migrants.html

The difficulties in the implementation of migrant swap deal reached in March between Brussels and Ankara creates "open questions," Austrian Ambassador to Russia Emil Brix said Monday.

"The problem is that at the moment it is only with the help of partners that we can have a working border control of the external borders of the European Union. This is the reason why the negotiations with Turkey took place. This is the reason why we found this agreement, which relies on the good will of both sides. There are still open questions as far as implementation is concerned," Brix told RIA Novosti in an interview.

The issue of implementation of the agreement was under discussion in the European Union, but it was hard to say, whether the discussions would result in "an acceptable outcome" within the near future, he added.

According to the ambassador, Brussels should not rely on its partners too much.

"This is a task of the European Union itself to make sure that we can control and regulate the influx of migrants to Europe," Brix said.

Ankara Accused of Ignoring Daesh Despite Knowing the Terrorists Locations

http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160516/1039703521/turkey-daesh-terrorists.html

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Friday, Erdem leaked documents to the press allegedly containing phone call transcripts of prominent Daesh figure Ilhami Bali, which reportedly had originally been obtained by Ankara’s security forces. The documents point to Daesh fighters enjoying unfettered movement, medical treatment and accommodation in Turkey.

"While reading the documents, what catches the eye is that a terrorist is on the phone informing about its whereabouts, he names the hotel he is staying in but the security services do not send their personnel to this hotel and do not detain this terrorist… They [terrorists] talk to each other freely on the phone, which is tapped, but no one does anything to detain them," Erdem said in an interview.

According to the lawmaker, the wiretapped extremists smuggled guns, flame throwers and Kalashnikov assault rifles across the border. From the information provided in the documents, it is "absolutely clear that they have either already joined Daesh or are going to," Erdem noted.

"In the phone conversation, recorded in the documents, it is described in detail where the group plans to recruit candidates for jihad, the pickup point, at what point at the border they will cross into Syria," Erdem added.

Erdem, who is being investigated for treason over his allegations that Daesh jihadists had used Turkey as a transit route to deliver deadly sarin gas to Syria, has claimed that militants from the group are regularly escorted through the Syrian-Turkish border with the help of local middlemen. On Sunday, the CHP member blamed the Turkish authorities for covering up the cross-border activities.

Ankara has staunchly denied any links to the terrorist organization, which is outlawed in many countries, including the United States and Russia.

Turkish Opposition MP to Sputnik: Docs Confirm Govt's Connivance with Daesh

http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160516/1039709822/turkish-phone-records-daesh-interview.html

Erem Erdem, the opposition politician who gave the media records of tapped phone calls showing the Turkish intelligence services' passive attitudes toward Daesh-affiliated criminals, tells Sputnik that this is a scandal of national proportions.

Last week, Erdem, an MP from the Republican People's Party, presented journalists with a damning, 422-page document featuring the records of tapped phone calls of Daesh-affiliated criminals on Turkish territory.

Speaking to Sputnik Turkey about the records, the politician emphasized that this is a scandal of national proportions.

"These phone records are cause for a scandal of national proportions, since they contain information about the illegal movement of nearly 1,500 people across the Turkish-Syrian border in groups of 5-10 people each. And despite the availability of this information, the security services did nothing to stop the process," Erdem said.

"About 70-80% of the fighters who crossed the Syrian border return to Turkey. They include [Ilhami Bali] the man who organized the attacks in Suruc and Ankara." Bali is one of the Daesh-affiliated criminal figures whose phone was tapped, and officially has a reward of 4 million Turkish lira (about $1.3 million US) on his head.

"The telephone conversations reflected by the documents show in the most detailed manner possible where the jihadists recruit 'candidates', where they will be awaited, and where at the border they will cross into Syria."

At the same time, Erdem said, "when one reads the documents, what catches the eye is that the terrorist reveals by phone his whereabouts, the name the hotel where he is staying, etc., but the security forces do not send people to the hotel to detain him. Under normal circumstances, he would have to be taken into custody as soon as possible, because it's absolutely clear that he has already joined Daesh, or is planning to do so. These individuals carry machine guns, flame throwers, Kalashnikovs across the border. They freely speak to one another by phone, and these phones are tapped, but nothing is done to detain them."

According to the politician, the main question that arises on his mind is "why didn't the security services intervene in this process?"

Late last week, Sputnik reported that four wounded Daesh fighters had been treated at a hospital in southern Turkey, citing a local medical worker.

Speaking to Sputnik, Erdem noted that the phone taps too confirm the jihadists' use of Turkish hospitals, which indicates that Turkish intelligence knows about it. "The documents…contain information about the medical treatment of terrorists on Turkish territory. For example, there are records of telephone conversations in which militants report on how many militants much be sent to which hospital."

"Terrorists receive treatment in hospital, after which the head of the group asks about the cost of the treatment. He is told 'We paid the hospital $18,000.' In response, the commander says 'You overpaid. You should have found a hospital with better prices.' In short, the terrorists are satisfying their needs, using Turkey as if it were one big shopping and wellness center."

In addition to Ilhami Bali, the wiretap records also mention Ebu Hanzala, a Turkish jihadi recently released from prison believed to be one of the main organizers of Daesh activities in Turkey. "Militants' conversations contain information about how Abu Hanzalah led efforts to recruit fighters in the Turkish province of Urfa, and oversaw the creation of training camps for the jihadists. And this man was released from prison not long ago."

"What else can this be called if not clear evidence of the authorities' complicity and cooperation with the Daesh militants? If the government did not cooperate with Daesh, the security forces would have carried out a series of operations and arrested at least a couple of the militants. Meanwhile, [in reality] it has not detained any members of the terrorist organization – not one."

All this is made worse by the desperate political and social situation in Turkey today, Erdem said. "In Turkey today, any person handing out leaflets on the street, or who signs the petition of the academics, can be accused of terrorism; and yet, the real terrorists continue to freely carry out their activities."

Ultimately, the politician emphasized that "it's necessary to call a spade a spade. This is a betrayal of humanity; it is a betrayal to support the Daesh terrorists, to turn a blind eye to their murderous activities."

Turkey to be prosecuted over illegal oil trade with ISIS

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/turkey-prosecuted-illegal-oil-trade-isis/

A number of western courts are investigating documents and evidences released earlier that imply suspected links between Turkey and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on smuggling Syrian oil.

Sotir Tsatsarov, the chief prosecutor of Bulgaria, said his country is determined to fully and thoroughly investigate documents proving that Turkey has been smuggling Syrian oil into Bulgaria. The claim was supported by information obtained from the Bulgarian intelligence agency, partner European countries and satellite images.

“The evidences clearly show ISIS oil trucks on Bulgarian borders through Turkey. Turkish dealers are deeply involved in purchasing oil from ISIS-held areas in Syria and Iraq, transporting it through Turkish territories only to be sold to European brokers”, he stated.

In a parallel move, the court of Bologna, Italy has also filed a lawsuit against Erdogan’s son, Bilal, who has been repeatedly accused of brokering illegal oil deals with ISIS.

The claim was based on a NATO report criticizing Turkey’s heinous role in ‘ oil laundering’ with the terror group. However, the same report underlined the fact that Turkey, after all, is a NATO member and therefore the issue must be carefully taken care of to prevent undesirable consequences.

Earlier, British Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi has been accused by local media with getting involved in illegal oil trade with ISIS. The Iraqi-Kurdish businessman has been formerly charged with money laundry.

"The Arab countries have purchased advanced weapons from the West for the terrorist groups in Syria to be used in the Northern and Southern parts of the country," sources told the Palestinian al-Manar news website on Monday.

Following the terrorist groups' painful failures in Syria, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are attempting to smuggle these weapons to Syria, the sources added.

In relevant remarks in October, a Saudi official announced that his country had supplied the militants in Syria with a new batch of TOW antitank missiles as the Syrian army forces backed by Russian warplanes continue to gain ground in the Arab country.

BBC correspondent Frank Gardner tweeted that a Saudi official confirmed the delivery of 500 TOW antitank missiles to the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA).

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups which are supported by Saudi Arabia and its regional allies has so far claimed the lives of over 240,000 people.

Saudi Arabia plans Middle East’s ‘biggest security centre’ in Makkah

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/saudi-arabia-plans-middle-easts-biggest-security-centre-makkah/

The Middle East’s largest security operation centre will be launched in the Makkah province in the western part of Saudi Arabia.

The National Centre for Joint Security Operations, to be launched by the interior ministry, will bring together various security centres in the vast kingdom and will merge all existing operation rooms under one system managed around the clock by 400 officers on every shift.

One department at the centre, the road security control, is already operating and receives the emergency reports on 911. It was opened last year by Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Nayef, Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior.

Ahead of the merger of the operation rooms, the interior ministry had organised several training sessions for more than 1,600 officers by experts, Saudi daily Okaz reported on Sunday.

Around 18,000 cameras monitoring the security situation in the country will be linked to the centre. The cameras may be linked to applications in the future, the daily added.

Information received by the centre will be processed smoothly and the identity and location of the caller is determined automatically.

The centre also features two giant screens, believed to be the largest in the Middle East.

All the contact numbers used by the current operations rooms will be changed to a unified number of 911.

The number shifting expected to speed up and improve communications will be gradual and will take place over the next few months, reports in Saudi Arabia said, citing the interior ministry.

All those assigned to the centre have received extensive linguistic training abroad and attended English language courses to ensure a specific proficiency level.

The centre is expected to communicate easily with people with special needs, like the deaf and dumb.

The centre used to be known as the Command and Control Centre and its task was confined to coordinating the efforts of the security authorities.

However, with the increase in the number and quality of the tasks assigned to the centre, and based on the significance of its new role, the interior minister called for a massive upgrade that integrates the new security missions and for a change of the name.

Saudi troops partake in Turkish-led military drills

http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2016/05/16/465962/saudi-arabia-turkey-efes-2016

Saudi ground and naval forces are taking part in multinational war games being held in the Turkish cities of Ankara and Izmir.

According to Saudi naval commander Colonel Ali Bin Mohammed Al-Shahri, the Turkish-led drill, dubbed EFES 2016, is one of the largest multinational military exercises of its kind, the Middle East Monitor reported on Monday.

He noted that the field exercises, which will last for about one month, will serve to “reinforce international security and stability, the solidarity of participating states, the willingness to confront terrorist organizations, highlighting capabilities and raising efficiency.”

“The exercise is aimed at enhancing cooperation, augmenting military understanding, implementing the hybrid tasks in a multinational environment, in addition to implementing the scheme of strategic loading and transporting of troops from areas where they are stationed,” Shahri added.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey are both part of an international US-led coalition purportedly conducting airstrikes against Daesh Takfiri terrorists inside Iraq and Syria.

This is while Riyadh and Ankara have also been implicated in supporting Takfiri groups operating in Syria with reports saying that Ankara actively trains and arms the Takfiri militants there and facilitates their safe passage into the Arab country. Turkey has also been accused of buying smuggled oil from Daesh.

Ankara is using the large-scale joint military operations in Northern Syria with the partnership of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the US to help the al-Nusra Front terrorists, a former Syrian General said on Tuesday.

"At present, Turkey is hosting military exercises and denies any relationship between the drills and the situation in Syria but actually it is betraying the military operations by allowing the al-Nusra Front terrorists' trafficking through its territories into Syria while they carry chemical weapons to kill the Syrian people," Colonel Mare'i Hamdan told Sputnik Arabic.

He also said that Washington is fully aware that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will misuse the presence of the US forces in the joint wargames in Turkey to his benefit.

Hamdan underlined that the only side which is really fighting against terrorism is the Syrian government which is trying to protect the country's people from the terrorist groups' danger.
