Members of Hasidic Jewish movement may sue the Russian government to recover 18th century religious writings and prayers seized by the Nazi and Soviet armies, The Associated Press news agency quoted a U.S. judge as saying on MOnday.[...] The plaintiffs are members of Chabad-Lubavitch, a Hasidic Jewish movement that follows the teachings of generations of eastern European rabbis and emphasizes the study of the Torah.
Likely it's Shulkhan Arukh roundabout story.

Reb Shneur Zalman
(1745-1813) Born in 1745 in Liosno, Bielorussia. Reb Shneur Zalman was the founder of Chabad Chassidus, and learned about Hasidism from Rabbi Dov Baer HaMaggid, leader of the Hasidic movement. Under The Maggid, Reb Shneur Zalman wrote updated and profound commentaries about the Shulchan Aruch. His son, Rabbi Shalom Dov Baer Schneerson, became the leader of the Chassidic movement after Reb Zalman's death.

Rabbi Shalom Dov Baer Schneerson
(1773-1827) The eldest son of Rabbi Shneur Zalman, who was the founder of Chabad Chassidism and had suffered the full force of the anti-Chassidic backlash, Reb Dov Baer became the leader of the Chabad dynasty after his father's death in 1813. He moved the group to the town of Lubavitch in Russia, after which the group became known. As a prolific writer, he expanded on the mystical works of his father, and helped to further differentiate the Chabad movement from other forms of Chassidism. Like his father, Reb Dov Baer was imprisoned by the Russian authorities after allegations by opponents, but was released soon after.
Below is the analysis of the Chassidic Shulkhan Arukh given in the article Jewish Good Fortune, Russian Tears also known as

i have my doubts here.

Under this Public Law which sanctions Talmudic Judaism and according to the Talmud Bavli, from which this Law is derived states the following: Melakhim, ch. 9, 10). One additional element of greater severity is that violation of any one of the seven laws subjects the Noachide to capital punishment by decapitation (Sanh. 57a).

Nice, hah?
the public law, as passed:
http_colon_//thomas_dot_loc_dot_gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c102:H.J.RES.104.ENR:

as i read that public law, it institutes the ninetieth birthday of rabbi schneerson as "education day" in the US. also, as i read and understand that public law, the bill in no way institutes the "noahide laws" as part of the civil code, penal code, or any other code of laws of the US. last but not least, IMHO the public law (and the resolution) do sanction ethical values from talmudic judaism as a basis for lawgiving and jurisprudence in a manner similar to ancient roman and greek codes of law, english (common) law, moral and ethical values transmitted by catholicism, protestantism and probably other religious faiths, ...

in sum: it says that these laws from the judaic tradition are "good" and "the basis of universal ethics". it does NOT institute them as "the law of the land". the resolution designates EXACTLY march 26, 1991 as "education day", not more and not less.

the resolution is still problematic, IMHO. it could be interpreted as introducing in laudatory terms laws and the thoughts behind them (and their enforecement) from a legal tradition which has probably little in common with the values of most americans. i am very much for strict separation between govt and religion, for reasons which are IMO well understood in this forum. in this respect, i find it problematic to give "a foot in the door" to extremist and fundamentalist religious movements (jewish or otherwise), what is what i see this resolution + public law doing. i would not wish such a thing coming to pass anywhere i lived.

very strong disclaimer:
a) I am not a lawyer
b) I am not an american.

Still, the way we select our leaders (factual or spiritual authorities), whose lives we set up as examples to educate our kids and base our own life choices, is relevant. There is nothing illegal about Chassidic Rabbi being commemorated and set as an example for US nation. Lubavitch chassids have as much of a constitutional right to exist, be commemorated and freely exercise their religion (or its absence) as Muslims, Christians or anybody else. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson according to US Congress resolution I brought up here has been set up as an example of a righteous man for the whole country. But: this is true that historically US is predominantly a Christian (christian fundamentalist?) country. So, I'm asking why entire country should commemorate birthsday of a Chassidic rabbi as all-country Educational Day? This person might had done some really outstanding extraordinary service to his country to be commemorated in this way. No? Someone dares to explain? I think in education all religions' as well as atheist symbols should be treated equally. Isn't a clear and untainted favoritism case? To me this resolution sounds like US spiritual [freedom], if any prior, has been relinquished de juro.
Compare:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...
There are two clauses to this part of the First Amendment, the establishment clause and the free exercise clause. They can be stated another way:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. - AND - Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion.
I think, it was Jefferson who said that there should be a wall of separation between church and the State.
Lubavitch Chassidic rebbe Mendel Menachem Schneerson commemorated by resolution of US Congress.
If I were American, I would be curious to know whowas Rabbi Schneerson and why he has been favored by US Congress as probably the most righteous man among other illustrate personalia to be prefferred and commemorated and what example he had set up for Education of entire nation. I maybe well wrong here, no doubt!

The Education Day in the US is commemorated to this man. Do you feel fine? With this resolution at least one knows what rules to abide to Educate his/her kids...
Name said:
very strong disclaimer:
a) I am not a lawyer
b) I am not an american.
Me neither, Name. Just wanted to say what I think about it. To me this resolution sounds like US spiritual [freedom], if any prior, has been relinquished de juro. If i'm wrong, just point that out. No pain - no gain.

and from reading Lubavitch Chassidic rebbe Mendel Menachem Schneerson bio i can't grasp WHAT exactly extraordinary service to American nation and American people he was. Really. Thanks, if someone will point it out.

i think i left out or did not say something clearly enough:

I said:
... the resolution is still problematic, IMHO. it could be interpreted as introducing in laudatory terms laws and the thoughts behind them (and their enforecement) from a legal tradition which has probably little in common with the values of most americans
...
i would not wish such a thing coming to pass anywhere i lived
and then your last post. exactly: what ever did this man do for america. moreso: what ever did this man do for anybody who is not a jew ? my answer: he HATED their guts. and that is the whole point about presenting him as a "moral" example.

for all (little) i know, schneerson THE lubavitcher (along with maimonides and rambam and some lesser ones) is one of the names of rabbis which i identify with extreme and uncompromising hatred of anybody not a jew, one of those utterly respected and authoritative religious proponents of "hate the goyim as much as you love their posessions". i read thru his vita, and somehow i imagined one of those crazed settlers running around and holding a cracker (matzot) in one hand and a dollar bill in the other, asking myself, what did this man accomplish during his life, earnestly ? ok: wrote some religious pamphlets, founded synagogues here and there, hit on lots of people for cash, married the daughter of another rabbi, gave the IDF moral support (giving support and sucor to terrorists, i'd say). so what ? nothing any second-rated guru imported from india hasn't done.

those "noahide laws" and their enforcement ("off with their heads" ...) are IMO just the next step in the global pathocracy of their pipe dreams. that public law, as "legal" and "legitimate" it is at face value (about what i wrote before), is insidious in its side effects. when the next step comes, they'll have the precedent: "but it was already voted unanimously in law so-and-so that schneerson is a saint and his laws are examples of morality ..."

schneerson and all his opus are, succintly, cut'n'paste out of lobaczevski. the inquisition in jewish.
