The fire broke out late Sunday afternoon at the car park located next to the Echo Arena, hours before an international horse show.

“Initial investigations indicate that an accidental fire within a vehicle caused other cars to ignite,” a statement by Merseyside police said, Anadolu Agency reported.

It said “all vehicles parked in the car park have been destroyed.”

The fire services said 12 fire engines fought the blaze at the car park with a capacity of 1,600 vehicles.

The blaze forced authorities to move horses from the Echo Arena for protection and caused the show’s cancellation. Hundreds of visitors were left stranded with their cars destroyed, local media reported.

The Liverpool International Horse Show was held at the arena, and it was to conclude with the Sunday show that would have hosted 4,000 guests.

“No one has been seriously injured, the force said. It was also reported that no animals were hurt,” the police said.

Several witnesses reported hearing explosions as other vehicles ignited and the fire spread inside.

All vehicles parked in the 1,600 capacity car park at the Liverpool ECHO Arena have been destroyed, police say.

A number of horses were led to safety from the ground floor and no injuries were reported.

The blaze, which started just before 5pm, also caused the Liverpool International Horse Show to be cancelled at the Arena.

Shocking pictures have emerged showing the devastation caused inside the third floor of the building.

I actually drove past this site after it happened, and now know what the toxic fumes of 1400 burning cars smells like.

Their explanation was that a single vehicle ignited (somehow) and this caused every other car to ignite.

I'm no expert but my first thought was that this doesn't sound right. Cars are not made of paper. Maybe some weird electrical weather phenomena?

And no fire suppression system? Especially since it looks like it's sandwiched between other buildings, so...

According to this report, the blaze started in a four-wheel drive vehicle on the third level. It also mentions, "Horses which had been on the first level were moved to the arena." Yet, none of the reports specify "how many levels" the car park contains?

What I'm having trouble understanding, if the car park is constructed mainly of concrete and steel, how did the fire jump to the other levels and consume a total of 1000+ vehicles? Then to announce shortly after the fire, that they were able to narrow down a four wheel drive vehicle, on the third level, as the one that started the blaze? But don't worry - just contact your Insurance Company?

Is "1,000 cars burnt" a growing trend? This event in France.

Mass disorders erupted on New Year’s night in France leaving more than 1,000 cars burnt, the country’s Interior Ministry said in a statement.

“As it happens every year, there were some disorders: 1,031 cars were burnt … The figure is lower than in 2012 and 2013 – 1,193 and 1,067 [respectively] but a bit higher than last year’s [figure] – 932,” the statement said on Monday.

A total of 510 people were detained on New Year’s night, which is also more than in 2016 when 454 people were detained.

The disorders also left eight police officers and three servicemen injured.

Security in France on New Year’s night was ensured by 140,000 police officers, gendarmes, servicemen and firefighters.

I had the same thoughts too- how does one car burning cause 1400 other cars also to burn. And now the one in France with 1000 cars?

The Netherlands seem to be more conservative with car fires - they prefer to spread them out to about 10 a day?

The Union of Insurance Companies in the Netherlands is worried about the growing number of car fires in the country.

Record breaking number of car fires in the Netherlands this year: More than 10 per day! — 30 December 2017
https://voiceofeurope.com/2017/12/record-breaking-number-of-car-fires-in-the-netherlands-this-year-more-than-10-per-day/

According to their statistics, the number has never been so high. With 2,808 car fires in the first nine months, 2017 is already a record breaking year, with 90 more car fires than in 2016 and 398 more than in 2015.

With 2,808 incidents in the first nine months of this year, 312 cars were burned per month: That’s more than 10 per day!

According to a spokesman of the Union, most car fires are intentionally lit. They cost on average 10,000 euros per car and in total tens of millions of euros per year.

A very odd situation in Liverpool. There seemed to be a phenomenally rapid escalation of fire which quickly consumed all the 7 levels. There is a photo of the car burning which started the blaze. I am glad all the horses were taken to safety.

What happened in France is a bit different. It's not 1000 cars burning in the same place at the same time, but cars being set on fire by individuals in various suburbs, particularly during New Year night...some kind of modern fireworks
