What are you listening to?

Hey guys, check out Chavela Vargas for some deeply melancholic Mexican folk music:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cF6jEclOMcw

('Macorina'. A poem dedicated to a Cuban high-society prostitute who lived in the 1920s in Habana, nicknamed 'Macorina'.)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xvUwn7may5Q

('Paloma Negra' = Black Dove. Basically a mariachi-style broken-heart song.)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vFD-HxPpP_U

('La Llorona' = The Weeping Lady. There's a Mexican legend about a ghost called 'La Llorona' who walked on the streets at night crying. However the lyrics are really a poetic love song.)

This is a song that still has a place in my favorites, even after all the reality and horror, there is the prayer of hope.

A New Year has been created, may it be Fruitful for All!

Desiderata
recorded by Les Crane

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Very Interesting Song by Bruce Cockburn
(pronounced: Co-burn) that I heard many years
ago and now after "the spirits open to the thrust
of grace" found on www.cassiopaea.org have set
themselves to the task of "loving" these lyrics seem
to make perfect sense.................. thank you Bruce,
thank you all.

Lyrics begin:

Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by
You never get to stop and open your eyes
One day you're waiting for the sky to fall
And next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

These fragile bodies of touch and taste
This vibrant skin this hair like lace
Spirits open to the thrust of grace
Never a breath you can afford to waste

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

Another Day in the System by Beres Hammond ( REGGAE )

Another day in the system, burning,
People wanna change,
And the people wanna change.
Watching all my little brothers struggling,
Working so hard.
Another day in the system, slaving,
People want a change,
And people want a change.
We're building up, tearing down,
Still nowhere going.

Now tell me,
Isn't it clear to see,
That the leaders just don't care,
If we should live or we should die.
Oh, so long as they get their share.
Now tell me what are we going to do,
People should arrange up a coup,
And must be willing to sacrifice.
'Cause if we think too high the price,

It's gonna be another day in the system, burning,
The people wanna change,
And the people wanna change.
Watching all my little brothers struggling,
Working so hard.
Another day in the system, slaving,
People want a change,
And people want a change.
We're building up, tearing down,
Still nowhere going.

They tell you don't forget to call me sir,
As we are not friends of the same class.
And keep a smile upon your face,
Be remembered I'm the boss.
They want us to think we've got no pride,
We're living just to stay alive.
But we're not giving up on life.
Until we win the grand first prize.

It's gonna be another day in the system,
Burning, burning, burning.
The people wanna change,
And the people wanna change.
Watching all my little brothers struggling,
Working so hard.
Another day in the system, slaving,
People want a change,
And people want a change.
Building up, tearing down,
Still nowhere going.

They'll wanna kill you for the truth,
But for me it's been much too long.
And I won't take it anymore.
The old system is so wrong.
Now tell me what are we gonna do,
People should arrange up a coup,
And must be willing to sacrifice,
'Cause if we think too high the price,

It's gonna be another day in the system,
Burning, burning.
The people wanna change,
And the people wanna change.
Watching all my little brothers struggling,
Working so hard.
Gonna be another day in the system, slaving,
People want a change,
And people want a change.
Building up, tearing down,
Still nowhere going ...

Thanks for this thread, lots of great lyrics I've never heard/seen before.
Another to share, this one by Railroad Earth. (anyone hear of them?). Bluegrassish/Celticish.

"Seven Story Mountain"

Oh lord to see the light, but fail in strength to follow,
Sometimes it's hard to let it show.
Oh lord to fail in power and each day grow more hollow,
Sometimes I just don't want to know.
But the road that led me here, has begun to disappear,
Sometimes I wonder where I am.

Oh lord to hear the voice, but let it fade and wallow,
Sometimes it's hard to let it go.
Oh lord to find the words, but keep them in and swallow,
One day the top is gonna blow.
But the road that led me here, has begun to disappear,
Sometimes I wonder who I am.

Oh lord to stumble blind, for years, without knowing,
Sunrise has burned my eyes again.
Oh lord to crumble quiet, watching from the silence,
Sunrise has burned my eyes again.

It's a Seven Story Mountain,
It's a long, long life to live,
Gonna find a light and fill my heart again.

It's a Seven Story Mountain,
It's a long, long way from here,
Gonna find a voice and fill my throat again.

I don't listen to such dance-trance-techno-remixy music at all really, but I've always liked the sound of "I Turn to You" covered by Melanie Chisholm; the video's good too.

When the world is darker than I can understand
When nothing turns out the way I planned
When the sky turns gray and there's no end in sight
When I can't sleep through the lonely night

I turn to you
Like a flower leaning toward the sun
I turn to you
'Cos you're the only one
Who can turn me around when I'm upside down
I turn to you

When my insides are wrecked with anxiety
You have the touch that will quiet me
You lift my spirit
You melt the ice
When I need inspiration
When I need advice

I turn to you
Like a flower leaning toward the sun
I turn to you
'Cos you're the only one
Who can turn me around when I'm upside down
I turn to you

Where would I be?
What would I do?
If you'd never helped me through
I hope someday if you've lost your way
You could turn to me like I turn to you

I turn to you
Like a flower leaning toward the sun
I turn to you
'Cos you're the only one
Who can turn me around when I'm upside down
I turn to you

I turn to you
When fear tells me to turn around
I turn to you
'Cos you're the only one
Who can turn me around when I'm upside down

I turn to you
I turn to you
I turn to you

This is my song of the moment LOL - the video version remix is the best version though

BIG TIME SENSUALITY by Björk

I can sense it
something important
is about to happen
it's coming up

It takes courage to enjoy it
the hardcore & the gentle
BIG TIME SENSUALITY

We just met
and I know I'm a bit too intimate
but something huge is coming up
and we're both included

It takes courage to enjoy it
the hardcore & the gentle
BIG TIME SENSUALITY

I don't know my future after this weekend
- and I don't want to!

It takes courage to enjoy it
the hardcore & the gentle
BIG TIME SENSUALITY

Another: One Republic - "Come Home"

Hello, world, hope you're listening
Forgive me if I'm young or speaking out of turn
But there`s someone that I've been missin'
And I think that they could be the better half of me
They're in the wrong place, tryin' to make it right
And I'm tired of justifying, so I say to you...

"Come home, come home
'Cause I've been waiting for ya, for so long, for so long
And right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I've ever known
So come home"

I get lost in the beauty
Of everything I see, the world ain't half as bad as they paint it to be
If all the sons, all the daughters, stop to take it in
Hopefully, the hate subsides, and the love can begin
It might start now, or maybe I'm just dreamin' out loud, but until then

"Come home, come home
'Cause I've been waiting for ya, for so long, for so long
And right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I`ve ever known (ever known)
So come home"

Everything I can't be, is everything you should be
And that's why I need you here
Everything I can't be, is everything you should be
And that's why I need you here
So hear this now

"Come home, come home
'Cause I've been waiting for ya, for so long, for so long
And right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I've ever known (ever known)
So come home

I just watched The Cure's Trilogy DVD set. It's a live performance in Berlin of their three "darkest" albums played all in a row. During the interviews at the end, Robert Smith said he has no idea what's going on, his parents are in their 80s and they've no idea what's going on, and that it's wrong to assume that growing older necessarily makes one wiser. I really got the feeling he could do with a copy of Political Ponerology!

nothing i am
nothing i dream
nothing is new
nothing i think or believe in or say
nothing is true

it used to be so easy
i never even tried
yeah it used to be so easy...

The Last Day of Summer

M.I.A - '20 Dollar' This song is amazing

War war war
Talking bout you all is such a bore
I'd rather talk about moi

Do you know that cost of a.ks
Up in Africa
20 dollars ain't shit to you
But that's how much they are
So they gonna use the shit just to get far

Is girls, diamonds
Helping you?
Don't you like my bandanna?
My stains hang low
On my shirts like ay yai ay
Monkey brains and banana
I'll hit you with my antana
I put soap in my eye
Make it red so I look raa

Ra ra
So I woke up with my holy quran and found out I like Cadillac
So we shooting till the song is up
Little boys are acting up
Baby mothers are going crazy
And the leaders all round cracking up
We goat rich we fry
Price of living in a shanty town just seem very high
We still like T.I.
We still look fly
Dancing as we shooting up
And lootin just to get by.

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head'll collapse if there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
"Where is my mind?"

War war war
Who made me like this
Was it me and god in co-production
My devil's on speed dial
Everytime I take the wrong direction

All I want is one thing and that is what you got
Sometimes I go lose my mind then I feel numb

There's 24 hours in a day
I used to spilt it 8, 8, 8
8 work
8 sleep
8 for play
Now I give it all it takes

People on the Internet
A new life for the intellect
People judge me so hard
'cause I don't floss my titty set
I was born out of dirt like I'm porn in a skirt
I was a little girl who made good with all that I blurt
I put people on the map that never seen a map
I show 'em somthing they ain't never seen
And hope they make it back!!!!

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head'll collapse if there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
"Where is my mind?"

Brian Eno Ambient 4: On Land

No Lyrics.
Wonderful atmospheric and evocative album - it's been one of my favourites for years.
Do you know the work of Steve Roach? Also no lyrics :-)

Here’s a song by Bon Jovi called ’Have a nice day.' What I find interesting is that smirking smiley face (a good likeness of GWB’s face) in the video. I think that smirking face very well represents the ‘self satisfied’ look of American narcissism and the mixed signals that America sends out to the rest of the world (as well as to itself) such as, when America shows the world how it must destroy a country in order to help liberate it.

Bon Jovi
"Have A Nice Day"

Why, you wanna tell me how to live my life?
Who, are you to tell me if it's black or white?
Mama, can you hear me? Try to understand.
Is innocence the difference between a boy and a man.
My daddy lived the lie, it's just the price that he paid.
Sacrificed his life, just slavin' away.

Ohhh, if there's one thing I hang onto,
That gets me through the night.
I ain't gonna do what I don't want to,
I'm gonna live my life.
Shining like a diamond, rolling with the dice,
Standing on the ledge, I show the wind how to fly.
When the world gets in my face,
I say, Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day

Take a look around you; nothing's what it seems
We're living in the broken home of hopes and dreams,
Let me be the first to shake a helping hand.
Anybody brave enough to take a stand,
I've knocked on every door, on every dead end street,
Looking for forgiveness,
what's left to believe?

Ohhh, if there's one thing I hang onto,
That gets me through the night.
I ain't gonna do what I don't want to,
I'm gonna live my life.
Shining like a diamond, rolling with the dice,
Standing on the ledge, I show the wind how to fly.
When the world gets in my face,
I say, Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day.
