"Something For Nothing"

Waiting for the winds of change
To sweep the clouds away
Waiting for the rainbow's end
To cast its gold your way
Countless ways
You pass the days

Waiting for someone to call
And turn your world around
Looking for an answer
To the question you have found
Looking for
An open door

You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story
In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your own song

You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

Came across this song from the second Hobbit-movie “The Desolation of Smaug”. Altough the text relates to the fire from the dragon what came in mind to me was a different kind of animal altough the dragon is a symbol of the other, comets creating desolation anyone?

Oh, misty eye of the mountain below
Keep careful watch of my brothers' souls
And should the sky be filled with fire and smoke
Keep watching over Durin's son

If this is to end in fire
Then we should all burn together
Watch the flames climb high into the night
Calling out father, stand by and we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side

And if we should die tonight
Then we should all die together
Raise a glass of wine for the last time
Calling out father, prepare as we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side
Desolation comes upon the sky
Now I see fire, inside the mountain
I see fire, burning the trees
And I see fire, hollowing souls
I see fire, blood in the breeze
And I hope that you'll remember me

Oh, should my people fall
Then surely I'll do the same
Confined in mountain halls
We got too close to the flame
Calling out father hold fast and we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side
Desolation comes upon the sky

Now I see fire, inside the mountain
I see fire, burning the trees
I see fire, hollowing souls
I see fire, blood in the breeze
And I hope that you'll remember me

And if the night is burning
I will cover my eyes
For if the dark returns then
My brothers will die
And as the sky's falling down
It crashed into this lonely town
And with that shadow upon the ground
I hear my people screaming out

Now I see fire, inside the mountain
I see fire, burning the trees
I see fire, hollowing souls
I see fire, blood in the breeze

I see fire, oh you know I saw a city burning (fire)
I see fire, feel the heat upon my skin (fire)
And I see fire (fire)
And I see fire burn auburn on the mountain side

I love this song, Ed Sheeran is an amazing musician with an amazing voice. He was asked by Peter Jackson (producer of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies) to do a song for the ending credits to this movie, and he apparently wrote the lyrics and music in a day. Good call on the dragon symbolism relating to comets.

Kaura - A New Refrain (Acoustic)

lyrics:

A New Refrain by Kaura.

No I don’t belong, I wear this skin, so I’ll fit in
Still I hold my breath and bite my tongue as I play along
Yeah I shut my mouth and nod my head, do what they said
I’ve played along far too long, it’s time to change the game
Now…I put my foot forward, it’s time to begin to
Free myself, this is the time for the shedding of skin
To see myself, leaving behind what I’ve been all this time
Still I’m forcing smiles and all the while feeling I’ve been bled dead
I’ve sung their song far too long it’s time to change the game
I’ll sing it now, let it out, I’ve waited so long
I put my foot forward, it’s time to begin to
Free myself, this is the time for the shedding of skin
To see myself, leaving behind what I’ve been all this time
My silence will come to end
I’ll see myself, leave myself, I’ve waited so long to
Free myself
This is the time when I let it all go to
Free myself, this is the time for the shedding of skin
To see myself, leaving behind what I’ve been all this time
I’ll free myself, leave myself, I’ve waited so long

I went to see Paul Ubana Jones play at a small local venue tonight. I think he is a pretty wonderful musician. He was playing mostly Bob Dylan covers on this tour, mixed with his own songs. He told the audience how it was listening to an EP of 6 songs from Bob Dylan's second album when he was 13 years old that was the point in his life when he realized he wanted to be a musician. Paul Ubana Jones is not widely known as a musician, but he tours New Zealand every year and also plays often at folk festivals overseas.

He has a style where he keeps a rhythm going on a bass string with his thumb, so when you listen it almost sounds like there must be 2 guitarists playing, but it is just him and one guitar. I think my favourite song he played tonight was a cover of Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages".

There has got to be hope for the US as long as they keep coming up with bands like this; all the things I love about American spirit and music.
