After listening only once I'm inclined to say it's a mixture of both. Most of those high notes are really sung (either live on the spot or in play-back) but the utmost high seem to be got taken over by some instrument (probably electric guitar) and then further enhanced via computer or synthesizer.
The voice type used is called falsetto.
A prime example would be Ivan Rebroff who sported four and a halve octave in range, allegedly.
I think the soprano range technically ends at C6. Well, he hits a note at the highest fret on my electric guitar which is a C# and then zooms up another step with way too much power and "cut/edge" to be real. There are octave devices that mimic the sound played and boost it up the scale an octave (or TWO). He has to be using something like that. Some are foot-switchable and work in real-time. His tone up in that range is definitely unnatural and synthesized.
