Mahavishnu Orchestra, Vital Transformation. Really tight funky jazz rock. The keyboardist Jan Hammer gave a lot to this band in subtle ways, but the band was essentially a vehicle for guitarist John McLaughlin's creative aspirations. The drumming too, Billy Cobham is just insanely good. It took me till my 30s to appreciate music like this.
Just found this live set from Prophets of Rage. They combine funk, thrash metal with a fierce hip hop delivery. I'm eagerly awaiting their album in the post on Saturday! Chuck D is such a legend, and B-Real brings his own distinct style. Tom Morello is on fire on guitar sounds too. A great, if short-lived super group.
I recently happened upon this old hit from 1995. The music's still great, but the lyrics had a lot more meaning ("you must be blind if you can't see the gaping hole called reality") after these past 15 years of enlightening reading I've been privileged to do. The chorus is a perfect anthem for us here on the Forum!
