Đedović Handanović: The American partners did not allow NIS to continue its activities, they demand the complete exit of Russian ownership
The American administration was clear and said that it wants a complete change of ownership of NIS and demands a complete withdrawal of Russian ownership from the company, Minister Dubravka Đedović Handanović said at an extraordinary press conference.
Minister Đedović Handanović stated that the USA sent a bad message tonight - that NIS was not given a day to continue working, and that in response to the company's request, they unequivocally demand a complete change of ownership by Russian shareholders. She said that, however, the USA has given approval for negotiations on the ownership of NIS, which is valid until February 13.
As she said, during the night our time, our American partners informed us about "a difficult message concerning NIS".
"At the request of the lawyers of NIS, which they sent to the American government and with which they offered a contract on the change of management in NIS, for the first time the American administration clearly and unequivocally said and wrote that it wants a complete change of ownership of the Russian shareholders, that is, it demands the exit of Russian ownership from the NIS company," said the minister.
She pointed out that they said that there must be no hiding behind it either by Russian collaborators of Gazprom or the Russian government.
Đedović Handanović said that approval was obtained for ownership negotiations valid until February 13, but not that NIS and the Refinery can continue to operate. She pointed out that the difficult message for us is that we have not received a single day that NIS can continue to work.
"You understand that it is impossible to change ownership in seven or eight days," the minister noted. She pointed out that the leadership of Serbia faces difficult decisions, as well as whether to carry out the takeover of the company, and after that determine and carry out compensation for damages.
"I know that President Vučić is against nationalization, as are many of us in the Government and outside the Government of Serbia, and we have repeated this several times," said Đedović Handanović.
She said that an extraordinary session of the Government will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m., which will be attended by President Aleksandar Vučić.
Đedović Handanović emphasized that the leadership of Serbia will not allow the country to be endangered. "In the coming days, perhaps some of the most difficult decisions in our history await us. I hope that our Russian friends will understand the gravity of the situation and will help us to overcome it because we are neither guilty nor obligated to find ourselves in this difficult situation. A political war is being waged, a geopolitical war is being waged, and we as a small country have to pay a big price. A small country that only wanted to be fair and correct to everyone. To all our partners and friends," Đedović Handanović said.
According to her, the functioning of NIS is of vital importance for the economy, as well as for the state and citizens in general.
"We had consultations all night, with President Vučić and with certain members of the Government. We practically did not sleep," said Đedović Handanović. She said that she saw what President Vučić was arguing about and pointed out that these were very difficult and responsible political decisions.
"What the citizens are aware of is that the sanctions have been going on for 36 days, since October 9, but they haven't felt anything, and that's thanks to the good preparation of the state," she said. The minister announced that she will have more information tomorrow during the Government session, but also after it, expressing the hope that we will be united on this issue.
"We must remain united in order to protect the interests of our country, in order to protect the interests of our citizens. We work day and night, we will continue to do it and to fight and protect our country, because the citizens must not suffer," said Đedović Handanović.
On November 11, the Russian owners of the Serbian Oil Industry sent a request to the American OFAC (Office for Foreign Assets Control) requesting an extension of the operating license, based on negotiations with a third party.
A Government session will be held in the Palace of Serbia on Sunday, to which all directors of public companies have been invited. The topic of the session will be the response of the American OFAC to the request of NIS.
The United States of America, after several months of delay, imposed sanctions on NIS on October 9, due to the majority Russian ownership in that company.
