Winter Storm Threatens East Coast? Batten Down the Hatches

We lost power from Monday evening on wards. No power yet . Most of us lost power. Around dozen tree fell in our complex, nothing dangerous. Skeleton cell phone coverage, mobile internet connection. Not many people on the streets. Feels like test run for what to come.
Gas, water supply, hot water supply exist. Today I will have to drive to office and every body will be on road.
Drove to office. Local roads are highly unpredictable.
The roads that are good yesterday are today blocked due to fallen electric poles due to soaked lan
d. I have seen dozen wooden wooden pools on the street. Until sun comes out and heats,we will have this issue
Mass transit is still down and estimations of 7 days to 45 days to repair is scary
We have to wait and see whether it is hype or not. Salt damaged electrical systems seems to be big missed in NYC.

I have to admit that yesterday was a bit nerve wracking for me. On the one hand, I had this great feeling that everything was going to be okay, and on the other, there was the media hype. So there was this sort of battle going on in my head between thinking "oh, I know these things can be awful, remember New Orleans!" and that feeling that everything was going to be fine. So it was interesting to observe myself in this. I didn't get paranoid; the worst thing I did was ask the FOTCM crew there in Baltimore to haul 5000 pounds of books out of the basement. I feel guilty for even doing that. But then, I joked afterward that if they hadn't moved the books out of harms way, they would have had water in the basement! Wellll!!! you just never know!!!
Murphy's law wouldn't have missed that chance ;)

Ah...Murphy :) O'Brian's Law states that Murphy was an optimist :cool2:

We're currently without power and I'm at an internet cafe at the moment checking in. Everybody is okay but our area got hit kind of hard. From what we've heard, our electrical substation was devastated, plus there are trees on power lines (there is one that is hanging on a line right outside our house and down the street a bit a telephone pole is hanging over). We also had a pergola collapse right outside the house, but luckily it did not hit the house. We were pretty prepared otherwise. I just don't know when we'll have electricity again or when we'll be back online. We were told it should be back on in 10 days but I'm skeptical. In any case we have lots of water and canned food and should have an electrical hook in for the generator to the house in a day or two.

I'll be on here intermittently as I plan to come to the cafe each morning.

Wow, this is something. Hopefully it seems that members of this forum were ready, with canned food, water, thanks to the advise of Laura and crew. It is really scary how something like Sandy can suddenly come, very fast and suddenly. I hope everyone will be fine and that electricity will come as soon as possible. You are all in my thoughts.

Hope you are taking photos to share when you are able.

Wow--take care Shane!

Two different disasters, and the same, political agendas.
One over stated more than it was, as to the other underplayed for what it really was.

Both have underlying motives, when the dust has settled as now realized from the post shared.

More herding.

What Does Sandy’s Wind “Look” Like?
_http://gcaptain.com/wind-look-like/
Surface wind data comes from the National Digital Forecast Database. These are near-term forecasts, revised once per hour. So what you're seeing is a living portrait. (See the NDFD site for precise details; our timestamp shows time of download.) And for those of you chasing top wind speed, note that maximum speed may occur over lakes or just offshore.

We’ve all seen those somewhat complicated NOAA weather forecasts with the 500 millibar lines and the frontal boundaries and unless you’re a meteorologist, or just really good at reading those charts, they’ve never really provided a good visual of what the wind is ACTUALLY doing.

Thanks to MIT research scientists, Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg, who now lead Google’s “Big Picture” visualization research group, we’ve been given a never-before-seen look at the wind.

Yep, NYC is messed up... its sporadic in some boroughs though. Almost all of my co workers from Long Island lost power.

Been stuck at work since Sunday... slow by slow things are coming back on line.

In Québec, everything went fine so far.

The meteo was kind of funny yesterday going from rain to sun to both at the same time while weird cloud bands passed through. Wind was quite strong but not enough to cause actual damage.

I would not say that.

In my neighbourhood, we have been without power for over 12 hours and some trees have been damaged by the wind, lot of broken branches.

Thanks for more updates. Hoping those who don't have power to have it back as soon as possible. Hang in there and being prepared should hopefully get everyone through.

The stance that some of you have taken, ie Sandy being over blown, has reminded me of a dream I had a few months back.

I met this guy at an apartment building which was pretty high up, when he saw me, he was like Brian!!! like he knew me, but I didn't know him. He started preparing some food to eat by the sink and there was a window there, so that's how I knew we were pretty high up, it was a cloudless, sunny day, and it seemed like spring. Suddenly a ship flew past the window, it was brilliant white and marked fed ex, with the purple and green colors, this was no aeroplane, I was surprised and asked him where the ship was going, because we had been talking about why there were so few people around, which was the first thing I noticed when I came to in the dream, he said "to the moon." I asked him if he had coordinates and he said they were 10 10 10.

I went for a symbolical interpretation of the dream, but when I actually passed the guy in "real" life, the dream became way more curious. This was the same guy, living in the same neighborhood as me, but to paraphrase the C's "dreams are the greatest forum for disinformation that exists" and "4D STS can create synchronicities easily."

I didn't even connect the food for the moon bit until a few weeks later so....FWIW.

Yes. I took some time to read a bit on what happened here.

Apparently, some trees were indeed damaged and some people have been out of power as well.

Anyhow, hope it's all fine now for you and your neighborhood! I didn't know you live in Québec.

Peace.

That's kind of ridiculous isn't it? I mean, TEN DAYS?
