Just to re-iterate what others have said about pet diets. We switched all of our animals to what they would eat in the wild mostly. Our cats eat meat with broth as well as our dogs. It's cook a lot of the time but we tend to feed our cats more raw meat and salmon with the bones and skin intact than we do our dog.
So far we've noticed that one of our cats that was really fat and almost diabetic lost all of his excess weight AND they all seem to be more resistant to pest such as fleas and ticks (we don't give them flea or tick medication). Although we will put cooked garlic and rosemary in with our dogs meal to help facilitate that effect. What was really interesting is that we fostered/baby-sat a small dog for a week that had a bad flea issue and even then they did not attack or latch onto to our healthy animals or us for that matter.
I was kind of dumbfounded but after doing some reading it seems as though parasitic organisms tend do go after animals or host that are perpetually sick either internally or blatantly. I guess to speed up the process of removing the vulnerable from the environment?
All of this can simply come down to whether they are on their physiologically correct diet or not. The only downside however is that now they love to try and help us cook our food because we pretty much eat the same things they do. It makes for an interesting dinner-time :D
