Freedom Trucker Convoy: From Canada to USA to all across the world

I find it interesting how, from a citizen perspective, there really are two camps:
  • those who want to end all COVID-19 protocols, restriction and vaccine mandates now, and
  • those who want to end all COVID-19 protocols, restriction and vaccine mandates based on when authorities deem it so
While the former believes the latter are blocking them (due to their support for officialdom), the latter believes the former are dragging out the pandemic due to their lack of compliance. Although they share a common objective, it is the differences in how to achieve it that appears unreconcilable, and therefore the weak point that authorities will continue to leverage.

As an Ottawan, I have some insight into how disruptive the protest is, particularly for those living in the downtown core. There are many who cannot concentrate during the day in their home offices or sleep at night due to the loud truck horns blaring all hours. For those with children, and I imagine for those mental health issues (including veterans with PTSD), this would be so much worse. Considering how stressful the COVID shenanigans have been for everyone, I suspect the amount of folks with mental health issues is significant.

As well, I am hearing a few first-hand (and several second-hand) accounts from people in food services of aggressive behaviour mostly around masking and people purposefully looking for an argument if not a fight. Good example would be protester trying to remove the masks off of workers (mostly disempowered minimum wage earners). Although the city has temporarily turned a blind eye to the by-laws around mask wearing in service locations (e.g. coffee shops) to avoid pouring gas on the fire, many of those establishments and their employees bought wholesale into the idea that the masks are a legitimate preventative measure from an occupational health perspective. Therefore, many don't want to be unmasked in an indoor setting and attempts to forcibly remove their masks would (in their thinking) be a form of assault.

Unfortunately, had the convoy not implemented the continuous air horn tactic, much of the noise from politicians would be reduced to complaints around the less urgent pains and more mundane complexities associated with unwittingly hosting large and lengthy protests. Organizers denying this won't resolve it any more than politicians using rhetoric and hyperbole. That is, unless not dealing with it is actually part of the plan.

So, as much as this event in my city, and the broader, ever-growing movement have provided me such an uplifting experience, I do have a lot of empathy for my neighbours in the downtown core.

I think this is pure projection, as more and more is being revealed concerning the political corruption. media compliance in the narrative, the corruption of upper management in those of leadership in Ottawa. This demonstrates to me they are afraid of the people and in fear of their own safety.

People should just roll with it and see how this develops, one thing for sure, it could possibly result in more crackdown on freedoms and freedom of speech. Could this be a fear porn ploy?

Yesterday, there was a Zoom meeting with all provincial premiers, the BC Premier hosted and lead the meeting. I watched very little, I have an aversion to listening to so many lies. The overwhelming subject for discussion was concering healthcare in the provinces, the continued vaxx rollouts. All singing from the same song sheet. Also Ontario Doug Ford calling the truckers presence in Ottawa as an occupation. All this for public viewing. Makes me wonder what they were discussing behind the scenes. Because yesterday demonstrations were held at all major cities in Canada.

Powers under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (Ontario)​

Under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (Ontario), the government has the power to:

  1. Implement any emergency plans formulated by municipalities or provincial government bodies;
  2. Regulate or prohibit personal travel and movement;
  3. Evacuate individuals and animals and remove personal property from any specified area, while making arrangements for the adequate care and protection of individuals and property;
  4. Establish emergency shelters and hospitals;
  5. Close public and private buildings, including any businesses, offices, schools or hospitals;
  6. Construct or restore necessary facilities, and appropriate, use or dispose of property to prevent, respond to or alleviate the effects of the emergency;
  7. Collect, transport, store, process and dispose of any type of waste;
  8. Authorize facilities, including electrical generating facilities, to operate as is necessary to respond to or alleviate the effects of the emergency;
  9. Distribute, make available and use any necessary goods, services and resources within any part, and establish centres for their distribution;
  10. Procure necessary goods, services and resources;
  11. Fix prices for necessary goods, services and resources, and prohibit charging unconscionable prices for necessary goods, services and resources;
  12. Authorize any person, or class of persons, to render services of a type that that person, or a person of that class, is reasonably qualified to provide. The government may not make orders requiring a person or class of persons to render such services.
  13. Require that any person collect, use or disclose information that in the opinion of the Lieutenant Governor in Council may be necessary in order to prevent, respond to or alleviate the effects of the emergency. The legislation includes safeguards to ensure the information is used solely in the context of responding to the effects of the emergency and to protect personal information when the declared emergency has ended; and
  14. Take other actions or measures as the Lieutenant Governor in Council considers necessary in order to prevent, respond to or alleviate the effects of the emergency that are consistent with the powers authorized within the legislation.[3]

Just adding that, although the act provides a duration end for when the Province of Ontario declares a state of emergency, the act is rather silent on how long a municipality can drag it out.

I went to the demonstration site in front of the Quebec Parliament this afternoon about convoy 2022. Yesterday, it was the biggest protest but today, there were very few people. On the other hand, there were no masks and many smiles. I took the opportunity to talk with many people and their hearts are filled with joy to participate in their freedom.

The Quebec City Carnival is usually a big event every years for outdoor fun, see the monuments of ice. Very few people were there. You have to have the vaccine pass (3 doses) to enter and see the ice monuments!
Maybe there is a virus hiding inside!

The police authority of Quebec City blocked the main streets and asked the truckers to go back home tonight.
When the carnival is over, they (the truckers) will be there, with even more trucks.

The truckers are organizing themselves well. Even if the food is offered to them (a pizza delivery man knocking on the door of the truck), there are some who make their own humberger in the back of their cab.

If you'll allow me the indulgence, I'm enjoying some Canadian irony.
Much of the organizing power (at least for the main convoy to Ottawa) that is helping unite the nation comes from folks who were (or still are) members of the western separatist movement. The political party formerly named Wexit, now Maverick Party, has its roots in Alberta separatism, which has its roots in western alienation. These folks are talking about unity and waving the flag of the nation from which some of them want to separate. This is a wonderful illustration of Canada as a nation of contradictions. Not only do we have divisions around language and culture, and how to come to terms with our colonial history, we also have divisions around geography and how some provinces (usually western) feel other provinces (usually Québec) have secured a better deal with the federal government.

To keep the peace at a national family reunion here, one used to have to ensure the family is well served with salmon from British Columbia, grass-fed Angus beef and wheat bread from the prairie provinces, tourtière and baked beans from Québec, and seafood from the maritime provinces, all delivered in a truck manufactured in Ontario.

It's cute that they've invoked magic words in an attempt to end the process. Since the emergency act doesn't magically make thousands of tow trucks appear out of thin air, I suspect this will be as effective as their previous magic words (media invocations of racism, extremism, misogyny, white supremacism, and Russia) ... that is too say, not at all.

They can say whatever they want but at the end of the day words don't change reality.
