Events in Russia

Informative interview by Youtuber Geopolitics & Empire providing an overview of the US-Russia situation with 'Russian military expert Andrei Martyanov'.

Further below is the video, the youtube blurb, plus some further info on Martyanov and his books.

The following notes are from memory, and so don't do the interview justice:

- Martyanov is a US citizen, from Russia; the interviewer was born in the US but now lives abroad (Mexico, i think)
- Russia is 'decades ahead' in terms of weapons development
- US doesn't make a profit from its arms sales, much of the spend goes on salaries and other expenses, not on R&D
- Russia makes a profit from its arms production, at a much reduced cost, and more so because Russia's output shouldn't be calculated in dollar-terms
- Russia has all but dropped US treasuries, holding only something like $3billion and is now doing business with countries in their currency of choice, and there's nothing much the US can do to stop it
- how the energy crisis in the West means that a large part of the cost of manufacturing, such as German cars, is the energy consumed in production, this is likely to get worse
- He talks about how the US is suffering inflation but, because of the dollar, is managing to stave off hyperinflation, for now
- Boeing's deadly jet crashes coincide with the appointment of a boss who, for the first time, wasn't an expert in the necessary field
- He makes some mention of psychopaths running the US
- Republicans are, ultimately, just as bad as democrats, but they'll take more time destroying the country, so Martyanov votes Rep

From what i recall, he doesn't mention the US resorting to hybrid warfare and how that might factor in.

Andrei Martyanov: It's Game Over for the West
Russian military expert Andrei Martyanov discusses the dangers of American exceptionalism, globalism, and how our societies have become totalitarian.
He explains how American military might was lost years ago and how Russia has not only become a peer competitor, but is decades ahead of the U.S. with a missile gap that has become a “technological abyss,” possessing hypersonic weapons against which there is no defense (and which the U.S. does not have), air defense complexes (e.g. S-500s), and so on. True strength lies in possessing both an advanced physical economy together with first-rate military power.
Russia has moved to a completely different tactical and operational paradigm. Conventionally, NATO and the U.S. can do nothing, Russia doesn’t sweat them at all. The only war possible would be escalation to the nuclear threshold, but he believes there are enough smart people in Washington to prevent that.
He comments on the disintegration of America culturally, and economically, which includes possibilities of hyperinflation and civil war. He believes the pandemic is a leverage points for the changeover of the old guard.

Reminiscence of the Future – Andrei Martyanov’s Blog
Reminiscence of the Future...

The United States is undergoing a profound and radical transformation, all features of which point to the fact of its departure at an accelerated rate from its largely self-proclaimed status as a global hegemon. The United States has lost ground in every single category that defines the power and status of a nation in relation to its rivals.
This book delves into the reasons for a catastrophic decline of the American nation, addressing a range of factors from the economic (especially energy), to cultural, technological and military factors. America’s deindustrialized economy is now deeply affected by what can only be described as a massacre of her small and middle-size businesses and the implosion of the US commercial aerospace industry. America’s only driver of real growth, the shale oil industry, is facing realities which may make the Great Depression pale in comparison.
Disintegration also seeks answers to the precipitous moral and professional decline of the always mediocre qualities of the American elites, from the corridors of political power to those of the military and business, now spiraling out of control.
More alarmingly, the trend also points to the possibility of the actual physical disintegration of the United States as a unified entity―whether the divisions are ethnic or ideological.
The most profound fault line is cultural―between the Coastal self-proclaimed elites backed by the secular, liberal media and deep state, who promote the most radical ideologies as it concerns gender and race, and the working class majority whom the former polemicize as deplorables, Christian fundamentalists, white supremacists, and climate and science denialists.
Investigating these factors sheds light on America’s future which holds very little promise for the country which had once proclaimed itself to be a shining city on the hill.
The American collapse is not just coming, we are presently experiencing it.
How can we deal with a catastrophe which is unfolding before our very eyes?
Disintegration lays out some possibilities.

On Nord Stream 2 Project

It is very difficult to imagine the Nord Stream 2 pipeline becoming operational if Russia advances on Ukraine, Sherman told journalists on Wednesday.

"The Germans federal network agency has suspended certification, and Secretary [Antony] Blinken has said, which underscores what Undersecretary [Victoria] Nuland said to quote the secretary from our perspective, it's very hard to see gas flowing through the pipeline for it to become operational. If Russia renews its aggression on Ukraine," she said.

“We should not drag [Nord Stream 2] into this conflict,” she said. We need to solve this conflict, and we need to solve it in talks – that’s the opportunity that we have at the moment, and we should use it rather than draw a link to projects that have no connection to it.”

And there I was thinking that "false flag attacks" were the purview of "tin foil hat conspiracy theorists" only.
Interesting that they admit a little bit of truth in there - that the US hasn't really got any leverage over Russia at all except for being able to pull strings in Germany regarding Nord Stream 2's certification.

Given the US military-industrial complex's penchant for projection, I wonder if this narrative means that the deep state is planning a false flag attack to provoke Russia, under the aegis of Russia being blamed for attacking itself? That really does take the idea of false flag provocations to a new level, but there's also the possibility that the narrative itself is the provocation, given that an actual false flag attack could start a cascade of consequences the empire doesn't want to risk.

It's also interesting to observe that in this escalation of rhetoric between the US and Russia, the UK has been fairly silent. Given their potential involvement in Kazakhstan's recent troubles, are they licking their wounds and waiting to see how the situation plays out before further diplomatic moves?

The US and allies insist NATO's open-door policy is not subject to discussion, but have expressed readiness to talk about issues where progress is possible. Russia maintains its package of proposals is "not a menu," and the alliance's non-enlargement is central thereto.

"We as the new German government have stated clearly in the coalition agreement that energy projects must comply with German and European laws. This also applies to Nord Stream 2. Currently, this project does not fully comply with European law, so the certification process has been suspended," Baerbock said, speaking at a joint news conference with Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba.
'Does this mean that the Nord Stream 2 will not be operational in the next two years?'

MOSCOW, January 18. /TASS/. The Embassy and Consulates General of Russia in Ukraine are functioning smoothly, despite attacks from Ukrainian radicals and provocations from Ukrainian security forces, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on her Telegram channel on Tuesday.
"The Embassy and Consulates General of Russia work in a routine mode. They do it despite attacks on Russian foreign missions from Ukrainian radicals and provocations from local security forces," she said.
Zakharova added that Russian diplomats in Ukraine and their families, as well as employees of Russia’s foreign missions, receive individual threats. Notes of protests about all this are regularly sent to the Ukrainian side. "One of the recent examples — an attack on Consulate General of Russia in Lviv with the use of Molotov cocktails," the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman recalled.
Commenting on the article by the New York Times about the alleged evacuation of Russian diplomats from the embassy in Ukraine, Zakharova stressed that the US newspaper did not ask the Russian foreign ministry for comment. "If the American newspaper addressed us for a comment, it would know what was going on. But then the interest in publishing the article is likely to be lost altogether," she concluded.

Earlier, the New York Times reported that the evacuation of Russian diplomats from the embassy in Ukraine had started. Commenting on this information, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the Russian embassy in Ukraine was operating as usual. Later, the Russian Embassy in Ukraine said that employees of all diplomatic missions of Russia in the country continue to work in a routine mode.
