BROOMFIELD - Move aside boys - there's a new girl in town, and she's breaking the stereotype and defying convention.

Thirteen-year-old Abbey Watson just returned from the Powerlifting Federation national competition in Oklahoma City where she set 28 records, including eight world records. She set the world record for squats in her weight class by lifting 143.3 pounds.

Abbey started weight lifting three years ago. Her Dad brought her along one morning to Defy Crossfit Gym in Broomfield.

"I came just to watch. I was wearing my school clothes and they asked me if I wanted to do it too. So, I did one of the workouts and I loved it, so I started coming," Abbey said.

Now she wakes up at 5:30 a.m., three days a week and works out for an hour before school

"I am amazed. I am surprised she has latched on to it as much as she has. I was just hoping she would get into a good workout habit. I never thought she would compete. I'm impressed and proud of her," Steve Watson, Abbey's dad, said.

She has come a long way in three years.

"I think that if someone would have told me at the beginning of 6th grade I'd be lifting this much, I would never believe them," Abbey said.

She now dead lifts 176 pounds - almost twice her body weight.

"When I tell boys how much I can lift, they say, 'I'm not going to mess with you anymore,'" Abbey said.

Her coach and trainer Jonathon Sabar says there's one key element Abbey has that many weightlifters don't.

"I think the reason Abbey is lifting weight that surpasses adults is because she's never been told she can't do it," Sabar said. "It's been amazing watching her grow and develop, and at this point, she is doing weights that are as heavy if not heavier than what full grown women do."

Sabar says it's a common misconception that kids and teens shouldn't lift weights. He says as long as they have the right form and work their way up, there is no health risk to it. It's everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Abbey says her next goal is to compete in the Olympics.

Yeah sure. His money depends on it.

Geeze... That's not what 13-y.o. girls should be doing. Really. Not in a normal world. Well, that would definitely be not this one we live in. And her dad is oh sooo proud of her? Talk about narcissistic family....

Sorry for not being excited despite her love for holy bacon. :(

I think she looks like she's having fun - and - she's not muscular or bulky at all. She doesn't look like she's taking any steroids or anything and it's a sport, just like any other sport. Maybe I'm missing something, but watching her on the video, she seems like a well-adjusted kid who enjoys her sport (and her socks are awesome).

He isn't making much off of her, if her practice schedule is what they say that is. No more than he would be making of a couple of other people who would have practiced in the same time slots instead of her.

He seems like the regular competitive coach who happened to have hit a jackpot with this kid. And, a thoughtful guy who is on the ball with all the nutritional things, judging by his website. He has on it his response to Taubes of Good Calories, Bad Calories, where he emphasizes the insuline-lowering effects of exercise.

If this girl does become successful in nationals and the olympics, she will create more draw for his business but not much more (she isn't even on his website now). His money will still come from regular folks and savvy overall business practices.

out of curiosity, what SHOULD a 13-y.o. girl be doing? Cooking? Sewing? ;)

for a different prospective, I can imagine being selflessly proud and happy for my kid who lucked out to find something he/she excels in so early in life, and is dedicated to it -- at 13, too, when other people don't know how to interest their kids in anything. Unless they edited the actual events for the story?

What's cool is that Paleo was mentioned briefly in the piece so at least their open to it. I've seen on a few Paleo sites that crossfit exercise is incorporated into their schedules so perhaps their leaning towards it if not implementing it. Nice! :)

She does seem healthy both in mind and body to me. Now off to do a search for those socks... :D

Even if it narcissistic thing, perhaps it is a sacrifice on some level ? I would think news like this spreading among bodybuilding/weightlifting community like fire, which sucks for PTB.

And looks like they have tried to do "damage" control by not mentioning bacon anywhere in news text, since it appeared on mainstream news. It only surfaces in the video interview so far.

I did weight training at her age too? She looks like she might be of Nordic descent? If so, she might need that kind of weight to build her muscles if she's going to be an athlete? As you can see her muscles aren't bulging or over developed, she's just built to lift a lot of weight.

Physical training used to be a tool of spiritual development (e.g. Far East martial arts). Now you have....gyms.

What is this girl deadlifting FOR? Her socks don't say "Way of the Fakir", do they? She might as well be "cooking" or "sewing" because it doesn't make a crumb of difference.

I'm with Possibility of Being in not getting my socks off (hah) over this news.

I've been wondering about the dietary changes lately. If a top athlete were to have this diet, would it dramatically improve their performance? I tend to think it would, especially in terms of strength but probably in terms of endurance, as well.

Dunno. Because she enjoys it? All I know is that I'm glad to see a young girl who isn't obsessed about her looks and has found some way in this crazy world to do something that appears to positively affect her. I think that says a lot for someone of her age.

I think she ROCKS! :headbanger:

And...PoB and Muxel...can you dig into why it bothers you so much to see a girl that strong? It was my experience growing up that some men were very upset to find I was as strong or stronger than they were.

Why is that? I never understood it then, and it stil mystifies me.

Well she gives at least one reason in the interview:
Reporter asks: Do you think boys are intimidated by you?

Abbey replies: When I tell them how much I can lift, most people say "I'm not going to mess with you any more" ..then she grins.

Her socks don't say "Way of the Fakir", do they?

No, she's on the BACON path, and I'd bet she's been refusing to eat green vegetables since she learned how to spit them out.

She might as well be "cooking" or "sewing" because it doesn't make a crumb of difference.

Hmmm I'm guessing you don't lift weights, cook or sew?

Female strength isn't my concern, Gimpy. In fact, I applaud it. I don't buy into the self-serving male bodybuilding Matrix manure.

I suppose I was unfairly holding her up to the standards of the Work. Guess I'll have to settle for more secular/human-interest-fodder reasons like self-confidence and personal enjoyment.

Well Guardian, I cook, so that's . :P

I thought this was already covered in your school thread.
