5th of November - V For Vendetta Day!

You know, this last viewing is the first time I realized what a terrible job Natalie Portman actually did in this movie. I was just so enamored of all the rest of the movie, and the incredible job that Hugo Weaving did playing a man behind a mask that I ignored her totally asinine delivery of lines.

I re-watched V as well on November the 5th and it was such a joy seeing it again. It's easy to go a while without seeing a film and forget how powerful it is, only to come back and be reminded, which I think makes it all the better.

Happy belated V day to all :v: :v:

I agree, her work in V for Vendetta actually somewhat distracts from the general brilliance of the movie, imo. I remember reading that for the movie to get off the ground, a "name" actress was required by the studio, and Natalie Portman must have appeared to be a good candidate to pull in the crowds for this type of film, after having starred in the Star Wars prequels.

I have wondered why she is regarded as such a great actress, as in the movies I have seen her in, her acting seems to leave a lot to be desired. Of course I haven't seen all of her movies, and it has to be said that she did a good job in Black Swan.

Maybe because Nathalie Portman is very vocal about her love for Israel and the need for people to become vegans (as she is)? :D

In 2009 she opposed Naomi Klein's protest against Toronto Film Festival which was honoring Tel-Aviv:

A vegan Zionist? What a lethally anti-revolutionary combination!

They could have cast any number of number of English actresses.

Just an observation:
We get a few celebrity rags delivered to my workplace, and I have to admit occasionally having sunk to the depths of flicking through some of them. I remember coming across non-photoshopped, "minimal make up" -pictures taken of Natalie Portman, and noticing how she looked somehow "unhealthy" or "malnourished" (for lack of a better word): the veganism could be an explanation.

The movie would undoubtedly have risen to even greater heights with a talented English actress in the lead role.
But I guess the main thing is that it at least got made, and the message delivered. Also Hugo Weaving gives simply a stunning performance, one of the best matches between an actor and a role/ material that I have ever seen. And he does it without showing his face, just with voice and body language.
Hugo’s the man! :v:

I was actually thinking something along those lines. Her performance bothered me even when I first saw the movie but every time I see it again or just view a scene on YT, I get more annoyed by her.

Indeed, there is an answer. A pro-israel, pro-obama vegan!

Yes, they could have and she's not even English. Her family permanently moved to the States when she was 3 years old. Her fake accent actually was one of the first things that bothered me about her performance.

The movie itself at first viewing made up for all the negatives she brought to the project. Especially Hugo Weaving, he was what made the movie and brought the best out of it. As you pointed out, Hiker, without ever showing his face, his voice and his gesticulation were perfect throughout the film. I hope Natalie feels glad she had the chance to work with him.

She was pretty good in Black Swan though, who knows why that was the first film where her performance was actually something, rather than just mere indication.

We will definitely be watching! We had a karaoke party last night with Group 4 of our FOTCM WorldPlay Workshops, so tonight will be MOVIE NIGHT!!! :cheer:
