This is a movie related to time traveling. Pretty original I can say, but I don't think the concepts in the film are valid from a scientific point of view. Anyways I can say that I enjoyed the movie because it is a good mix between comedy and drama(along with SF), but it is that kind of movie you'll just watch one time, IMO. I am not going to say more about it. No spoiler alert. But you can give a check on IMDB if you want to.

At least it isn't in teh subset of time travel films in which the character arrives naked... which never really makes sense, but usually in such films time travel is merely a tool and not the plotline itself. The Wikipedia summation of this film is rather thorough and seems to fall in the lessons of life learned.. sort of like Groundhog Day with BIll Murray... or The GIrl that Left through Time etc. The plotlines are always kept on a personal level ... though the Terminator series did reach for the larger issue of 'the rise of the machines' and end of man plotline. Seeing who the director of this film is, it isn't surprising he stuck with the romantic comedy/drama plotline... sort of reminds me of The Time Travelor's Wife... at least from reading the summary.. haven't seen the film yet.... and who doesn't like Love Actually? These time travel films usually involve only the main character who travels through time, even if others had in the past (Girl, mostly implied) or Terminator... in which it seems singular in relationship to the main kid and his mom setup.... Bill Murray didn't so much travel through time as remain stuck in it... as it repeated over and over... with him being the only one aware of it. It seems that any expansion of this plot device gets too complicated... so in this film it is kept to the father and son, right? Imposed limitation to keep the story focused on the son's life lessons.

Perhaps a different take on this time travel plotline is in a manga series called Qualia the Purple... still waiting for an English translation of the last chapters.... the translators have got caught up in new video games But it deals more with quantum realities, alternate dimensions etc... to get a desired outcome... at least so far in the storyline. But that is over many chapters, and only a series, perhaps like the Terminator film/tv could cover such a larger storyline... not to mention the a quick reference or two towards the science invovled... and I take it that such an explanation isn't found in this film? usually it's best to avoid it, unless that is the focus of the film, which isn't the case here.

Does the character have to learn to time travel or is it a given trait that just needs a little practice? That was the problem in Time Travelor's Wife... at least the child seemed to learn how to control the 'power'... similar to Jump.... character took the time in the beginning to learn how to control it... in TTW, he seemed more like a victim to the ability. Was this the case with this film?

The movie is mainly about the father and son relationship. Time travel is their secret and through it they kind of share what life is worth for (books and family blah blah). The father and son friendship is even less plausible than time travel itself, but that's just my very subjective opinion (love stories in the science fiction category) ;)

Science is to be of ordinarity , simplicity, common sense, that connects with every aspect of life...
even to go back in time to correct our mistakes.

I see that's what is going on with our future selves , keep coming back from the future
just to make things right again, after several times of making mistakes.

I see that's how we human being evolved , I see that's how Science serve human kinds.
what the modern world call 'Science' is really of trying to separate / unjoin/ cut things
into pieces in order to analyze... while to me , the real science is to find and connect every pieces together,
and see how things in nature are all connecting with each other - physically, astrally, spiritually ...


We are not moving in linear time, we are ( our mind/ our body/ our experiences ) as a result of past , present, and future
point of learning and evolving - we are multidimensional beings ... all of our aspects link with each other , they are never
seperated , only the perception is limited.

"About Time" is with its valid point : Wherever you want to travel , we need to put intention/attention
to the location , and the point where events happening.

If you see how our mind has been travelling through time a few hundreds of times a day
through the act of RECALLING memories ,
and feeling our body experiencing back the past

If you see how our mind has travelled to the 'future' by having some Dejavu,
some idea of what is to come, what is going to happen,...

I think it's how the advanced Race using their mind to travel.

If you think there is NO time , and there is NO space,
everything is Right here Right Now concurrently , simultaneously ,
that Time or Space are merely of illusion ,
if you see the physical world is like image fames that make a movie,
if you see that everything is of energy ,
if ....

Well, the movie was a big big wake up call for me ,
that time travelling should be for learning and evolving,
instead of going ahead of time to cheat and to gain money/power.

If one could go far enough to see the consequences of his own wrong doings
he would see what he needs to do , ...

After a short review so funny, and also taking the annotation of Carlisle, perhaps see the movie for distension in some occasion.

Well, you make it sound like a friendly little puppy dog! :) So it can't be all bad, until it starts fussing, scratching, crying etc.... but if only a couple of hours... :/

I just watched and enjoyed it. It is soppy and implausible :) but found it quite thought provoking and interesting to play with the ideas presented and questions raised. I liked the general message in the movie along the lines of living each day as if its the last. Agree with edgitarra's introduction of it and as far as rom-com time-travel movies go I'll give it a . Thanks for sharing. :)

I like the movie, but there was again the message to the normal people , about smoking cause cancer. it was somehow not made for this movie, it was strange.

Enjoyed the movie, time traveling and changing things to be more to the liking of people came over to me as cheating and STS though. Although the end is nice.

:/ Blame it on mass consciousness... it seems to be trying really hard to get it's points across.... in 'Hollywood' and everywhere else.... Purgatory... the lessons repeat and repeat, so why not the warnings, the signs etc? Disaster movies have been popular for decades now.... time travel more so recently.

As for the actress? If it works, it works, so don't change it, and how many actresses can really play 10 years younger successfully? Maybe she should have had the lead role instead? Switch parts with the male? That would have changed it up from the usual male Hollywood thought patterns, but then those dudes wouldn't really think of that would they? And the extremely few women in the industry usually learn to think like the guys to survive.... or go independent and still have to rely on them as distributors... ya always gotta dance with the devil, even if only a little while.

Haven't seen About Time yet, but when talking about time travel movies, I recall seeing Looper, starring Joseph Gordon Levitt last year and thought that was pretty good and with a decent plot.

The storyline from IMDB reads:
"In the year 2044, a man working for a group of killers called "Loopers" (they work for the mob and kill people who are sent blindfolded back in time from the year 2074 by their bosses) recognizes a victim as himself. He hesitates resulting in the escape of his older self."


Also, I recall a number of years ago, seeing a movie called Primer. It won the Grand Jury Prize of the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and as I recall was really good.

The IMDB summary reads as follows:
"At night and on weekends, four men in a suburban garage have built a cottage industry of error-checking devices. But, they know that there is something more. There is some idea, some mechanism, some accidental side effect that is standing between them and a pure leap of innovation. And so, through trial and error they are building the device that is missing most. However, two of these men find the device and immediately realize that it is too valuable to market. The limit of their trust in each other is strained when they are faced with the question, If you always want what you can't have, what do you want when you can have anything?"

I immediately thought of this movie when I read the synopsis of About Time. I haven't seen the movie The Time Traveler's Wife, but I have read the book. I thought it was written really well, & I cried my eyes out at the end. Vowed never to read it again because it was so poignant and sad (obviously triggering something in me - I guess there's enough sadness in this world without reading fictional sadness too?).
