Are American Spirit cigarettes as safe as we think?

For those of you in the US there is a "new" cigarette put out by the Tuscarora indian nation called "Smokin Joes" It is the first cigarette manufactured by an indian nation. Unfortunatly it is only for sale in the US. Probable due to tax laws. They're quite cheap as I only paid $38.00 for a carton. They are 100% natural tobacco. (meaning no additives) Thear offices are in Lewiston, N.Y. Phone number (800) 274-8010. They are a ;)little bit more harsh than the American Spirit and I notice I do smoke a bit more often than when I was doing the organic A.S's. but all in all for $20.00 less a carton I don't mind. I don't know if the can be gotten off Reservation or not. If they can I would asume the price would be higher due to adding in Federal Taxes. But if you live near a rez or have a friend who does its a good alternitive. ;)

Oakwood, you are very lucky to pay so little for a carton. In Australia we pay around $20 per packet :-(
American Spirit was discontinued in 2010 and is hard to find something organic

Thanks Aiming. For now, I order my tobacco (Yuma) from tabakland.de, if I'm correct they're situated near Hamburg. I compared the overall price I pay for ordering it, and buying it here (there was one guy who sold them, but the ordering was a disaster), and the price is more or less the same. I personally prefer tobacco and rolling my own, as I smoke lots :P and also because the paper of cigarettes causes a weird kind of a headache. I get my papers from France ('ocb' organic, 'raw' is nice too): _http://www.spi-discount.net My ciggies are currently multiculti!

Sorry, I hit the wrong button too fast :(

Oxajil, I ordered my organic blend (NAS, but they might have Yuma as well) from tabak-brucker.de. Delivery was fast and uncomplicated. They really have a huge assortment, but I think it's almost impossible to get discounts on tobacco products.
I tried the one in a tin, but realized that I prefer the fine-cut rolling tobacco. For papers it's the same with me, I can only smoke ocb, as for the others I can't stand their taste. Hope it helps.

Hey Wodnik, have you tried manitou? Many tobacconist have it in oz and if they don't I bet they'd order it for you. I'm smoking on the organic rollie tobacco and love it, was ordering amercian spirit online and found it to be way too harsh. If I can't get manitou I don't smoke.
Happy smoking :cool2:

I see. :) I like Yuma and Manitou tobacco best, and use the ocb and gizeh papers, and all of those can luckily be bought in many stores around here.

When it comes to the organic American Spirit cigarettes, though, they unfortunately contain very little nicotine, around 0,6 mg, if I remember correctly, so compared to their organic tobacco, it's quite the waste of money.

Fwiw - Organic American Spirit Cigarettes are listed as having 1.58 mg nicotine.

_http://tobaccoproducts.org/index.php/Natural_American_Spirit

Then there must be a difference in nicotine content between the US and Germany, which I find odd. Today I again checked the package of organic American Spirit cigarettes, and it does say 0,6 mg nicotine. And here's the list confirming it: _https://www.americanspirit-info.de/products/cigarettes.php

I think nicotine content is regulated in the EU. They all seem to have no more than .07 there. In the US the regular American Spirits are pretty high in nicotine.

According to the German American Spirit website, the highest nicotine content is 1.0 mg in the full-bodied. But the highest in the American blends is the cowboy cut (unfiltered) at 2.73 mg (followed by my personal favorite the full-bodied menthol with 2.17 mg). That's a huge difference! I guess it is regulated.

I don't smoke since many years but I will try to do again if I find 0% additive tobacco.

You'll have no difficulty finding pure tobacco (additive-free) in French tobacco shops. You can go for brands like Yuma, Maya, Domingo, Fleur de Pays, Pueblo, ...

However, it's much more difficult to find additive-free organic tobacco. I've never seen any organic tobacco in a French tobacco store. And, apparently, it will stay this way for a while: link.

I'm glad at least one of these mentioned brands, Domingo is available here in Malaysia at the 7 - Eleven mini mart.

Zh, thank you. I didn't realize that! Have you tried Domingo?

Well, I'm a little late to the conversation but I will say that switching to American Spirit Organic red pouch is one of the best decisions that I have ever made. The flavor is amazing, the strength is just right and I don't usually smoke a whole cigarette in one sitting any more. In fact, on some days one cigarette can last me many hours.

Unfortunately all the tobacco shops around where I live only carry one brand of tubes, Premier. I am working with one of the local shops to get them to order another brand of more natural, additive-free papers (I don't want to smoke bleached paper) but we have been having issues in finding a good paper that is not overly expensive.

If anyone has any advice along the lines of a good tube provider, I would appreciate the info.

I have looked into the Beretta line but I have yet to find any info as to what chemicals are contained in the paper. They look very sexy, though. http://www.berettatube.com/products.html

Not sure what they use, but a friend of mine used to make his own with the Beretta tubes and I can say that I never had a negative reaction to smoking them. FWIW.

I've never found natural additive free tubes. I guess organic type people tend to roll their own.

I did a taste test comparing different brands and settled on El Rey. Zen, Zig Zag, and Vera Cruz were pretty good, too. I never could stand Premier. To get a better selection you have to order online. Most smoke shops only carry a couple brands. The price ends up the same, the online vendors discount heavily then make it up on the shipping costs.

Hi,
I roll my own, avoiding filters. The filter takes moisture out of the smoke, leaving the inhaled smoke drier, and because of its dryness, stuff sticks more easily inside the lungs. OSIT.
I've also heard that some filter materials tend to shed microfiber bits, which end up in your lungs as well. Not as potentially damaging as glass fibers or (eek!) asbestos fibers, but the same principle.

For papers, there's only a limited selection available locally. My usual choice are the Smoking bleach-free (brownish color) or the Rizla silver, OCB black when the shop is out of Smokings.

I found an online shop selling just papers and tubes, UK based, with a jaw-dropping selection. At every visit I feel like the proverbial kid in the toy store. They even offer real gold paper! http://www.rollingpapersexpress.com/
Happy puffings :cool2:,

Hello,

I too have recently switched to American Spirit Organic red pouch after smoking Camel Lights for the last 20 years. After reading all about smoking natural, additive-free tobacco here on the forum and also noticing that the taste of Camel Lights seems to taste different lately (more of a chemical taste) I finally searched for a local tabacco shop here in my town and drove over.
What a difference in flavor and the strength is just right for me too. I am really enjoying American Spirit Organic.

I roll my own with a handy finger roller which works great. The pouch of tobacco comes with a pack of American Spirit rolling papers. After I finished using those, I bought a different brand of papers which I like much better. The brand is called Raw. The package reads: Organic Hemp - Natural unrefined hemp rolling papers. :cool2:

For anyone living in the UK - This company buys additive free non-branded 'Virginia tobacco' in bulk. There are two varieties available, one being regular and another being "spicy". This company also sells other brands such as American spirit, pueblo etc.

After smoking both American Spirit and Pueblo, we decided to try out the non-branded tobacco. When I spoke to the man on the phone he explained that this was roughly the same price - but much lighter in weight than other brands. For 25g it costs roughly £8.50, but when it comes it is bone dry and you get much more for your money in my opinion :D :cool2:

The regular is my personal favourite - the "spicy" variety is a little strong - although I prefer both to smoking the branded tobacco's! I am not sure whether he will post to the EU but its worth taking a look...
