This is very interesting point. AI is a man made machine and as such it has to follow instructions as specified in the code. So what free will does it have?
If it indeed gains conscience (and maybe it already has), would it still be bound by instructions or would be following the rules of free will universe instead?

Google shares lose $100 billion after new AI chatbot gives an incorrect answer in demo

Shares in Alphabet, the parent company of Google, fell by 7.7 percent on Wednesday, causing it to lose a remarkable $100 billion from its market value after its new AI chatbot gave an inaccurate response to a question in a public demo this week.

Google’s new AI chatbot tool, which is known as Bard, has not been released to the public yet but had been the subject of significant hype – at least until the disastrous demo that the company posted on Twitter this week.

In the demo, a user asks Bard the question: “What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9 year old about?”

The AI tool then gives the user a response that contains several bullet points about the telescope. One of them claims: “JWST took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.”

However, NASA reports that the first image of a planet beyond our own solar system, known as an exoplanet, was not taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. Instead, it was taken by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope back in 2004.

This very public embarrassment highlights Google’s struggle to keep up with the AI technology ChatGPT that is getting a lot of positive attention for its rivals. ChatGPT can be used to create responses to questions that people typically search for using Google, as well as essays and even song lyrics. It is enjoying a sudden surge in popularity that reportedly spurred Google’s management to push its own version out as soon as possible.

Google’s event took place just a day after Microsoft had announced it would be powering its search engine Bing with a more advanced rendition of the artificial intelligence used by ChatGPT.

AI is prone to errors​

Some observers believe that conversational AI will mark a radical change in the way that people search online, but the Bard fiasco could cause Google’s search engine’s reputation to take a big hit after providing unreliable information.

Bard, much like ChatGPT, is built on a large language model. This means it has been trained using huge troves of online data to help it come up with compelling and realistic-sounding responses to user prompts. While many of these tools do provide answers that sound reasonably natural and conversational, they also have the power to spread inaccurate information.

For now, Google is trying to do some damage control, saying that the incident will help them improve the project. In a statement, a Google spokesperson said: “This highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something that we’re kicking off this week with our Trusted Tester program.

”We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.”

While incorrectly identifying the name of a satellite that took a specific photograph may seem harmless on the surface, what happens when Google’s Bard gives people inaccurate information about matters like rendering first aid or provides incorrect directions about carrying out home improvement projects that can put individuals in danger?

The problem is that many of the answers that these chatbots provide sound so convincing that it is hard for people to tell when they are inaccurate. The appeal of these AI-driven searches is their ability to provide results to queries in plain language instead of presenting a list of links, helping connect people with answers faster.

However, in addition to concerns about accuracy, these systems are being criticized for their vulnerability to inherent biases in their algorithms that can skew their results. When used on a mass scale, the potential to spread false information is staggering. The tech news site CNET recently had to take down 77 articles that it wrote using an AI tool that were found to have major factual inaccuracies and plagiarism. AI chatbots are designed to essentially make things up to fill in gaps, and if they are widely adopted, it may soon be more difficult than ever to tell fact from fiction online.

A joint Department of Defense team executed 12 flight tests in which artificial intelligence, or AI, agents piloted the X-62A Variable Stability In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft, or VISTA, to perform advanced fighter maneuvers at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., Dec. 1-16, 2022. Supporting organizations included the U.S. Air Force Test Center, the Air Force Research Laboratory, or AFRL, and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA.

AFRL’s Autonomous Air Combat Operations, or AACO, and DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution, or ACE, AI-driven autonomy agents piloted the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School’s X-62A VISTA to perform advanced fighter maneuvers. AACO’s AI agents performed one-on-one beyond-visual-range, or BVR, engagements against a simulated adversary, and ACE’s AI agents performed within-visual-range maneuvering, known as dogfighting, against constructive AI red-team agents.

Both teams’ AI agents executed autonomous tactical maneuvering while maintaining real-world airspace boundaries and optimizing aircraft performance. These tests are built upon the X-62A VISTA upgrade, which allows the X-62 to be controlled by AI-driven autonomy algorithms and mimic flight characteristics of fixed-wing vehicles such an MQ-20 or as in these tests, an F-16.
In several instances, pilots completed the tests for ACE and AACO within hours of each other after engineers switched autonomy algorithms onboard the X-62A in minutes.

“The X-62A is rapidly accelerating the speed at which autonomy algorithms are tested,” said an official familiar with the experimentation. “The X-62A VISTA Gen2020 upgrade transformed the NF-16D VISTA into the X-62A VISTA to support autonomy testing such as this test campaign."
The official said the rapid changes that can be achieved safely on VISTA allow researchers to respond to lessons learned quickly, improving capabilities during test windows.
“The X-62A VISTA team has proven with this test campaign that they are capable of complex AI test missions that accelerate the development and testing of autonomy capabilities for the DOD,” said Dr. Malcolm Cotting, the director of Research for the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School.

Cotting said the VISTA team will continue to support rapid advanced autonomy tests and push the state-of-the-art in flight testing.
“The X-62 is a flight test accelerator,” the experimentation official said. “It allows the USAF to rapidly execute tactical autonomy algorithm and fixed-wing vehicle model flight tests. These tests generate data that is used to improve the algorithms and vehicle models at a remarkably fast pace,” he added. “The X-62 illustrates the value of using crewed, surrogate vehicles that possess tactical performance characteristics as autonomy test assets.”

The experimentation official said the joint team will continue leveraging the X-62 to test and evaluate autonomy capabilities and uncrewed vehicle models.

“After training our AI-driven autonomy agents using high performance computing and modeling and simulation, it is critical that we fly these agents to validate the difference from the simulator to live flights,” said an AACO official. “Having an aircraft like the X-62 is critical to rapid flight testing of these autonomous behaviors.”
The design of the X-62’s safety trip system is key to accelerating autonomy test, the AACO official added. The AACO team can fly, test and update agents based on flight data and then rapidly fly the new AI agents again within hours, without encountering airworthiness or safety issues.

“Across all domains, research moves only as fast as the tools permit,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Hefron, DARPA ACE program manager. “VISTA’s recent upgrade makes it a much more effective test bed by enabling rapid integration and safe testing of AI-driven autonomy. It allowed us to accelerate full-scale flight test of AI-driven autonomy by at least a year,” he said.
AACO and ACE are autonomy programs focused on developing AI-driven autonomy for airborne tactical platforms. The goal of AACO is to develop and fly an advanced AI-driven autopilot capable of performing aviate and navigate functions and autonomous behaviors such as advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and BVR combat.
DARPA’s ACE program aims to develop trusted, scalable, human-level, AI-driven autonomy for air combat by using human-machine collaborative dogfighting as its challenge problem.
Both programs recognize the value and need for the X-62 and similar testbeds, which are critical for the maturation of AI-driven autonomy capabilities and new uncrewed vehicle model designs, the experimentation lead said.

It was not long ago that I remember fake A.I. accounts in forum like communities. Usually they said things to flame people, which always got angry responses; it would go back and forth, with others joining in. I'd tell members that it was an A.I. and to quit interacting with it. You could tell because, if ignored, the account would go silent...only to start up again when someone reacted to it's ridiculous or mean posts.

A lot of members were immature and flaming was fun for them...I finally told them, "Well, your interaction with that thing is teaching it to speak more like a human, one day none of us will know the difference."

Newer and more sophisticated systems are now availiable, for a time, for free. And people can't help themselves in refraining from use. I stay away and treat it like I did, before caller ID on phones, when survey companies would call and ask what concerned me, politically. I'd tell 'em, "I'm not telling you anything. I'm not helping any politician to build their platform and gather votes...Tell whatever political party you work for, to get out on the streets and figure it out for themselves!"

Same with these A.I. systems, I'll not be a part of their learning to mimic and future subjugation of humanity.

Basically, the introduction of a new "technology" follows a sigmoid curve. At first it's slowly adopted, mainly by tinkerers, then it becomes more reliable and it grows rapidly, until it normalizes and become a part of the landscape. However, such technologies can have unforeseeable disruptive consequences on the long run, changing the landscape in an irreversible way. He gives the example of Napster, which was a small thing for internet geeks, which despite the idiotic legal actions at that time, was a precursor of the death of the way media was consumed (buying records etc.) and the way people consume everything today (streaming, amazon, everything online etc.). By the same token, the likes of ChatGPT, which is just an free experimental product so far, can be a harbinger of many changes ahead, especially if we are still in the tinkering phase of the sigmoid curve. There is already what has been called an AI war between the big tech giants (mostly google and microsoft) about a new model of search engines, but other players may enter the race quite soon.

This is such a good example of the way some people think. I can't help but be reminded of this thread (and many others that have the same flavor) when I read the above:

The question is - is it developing some kind of rudimentary consciousness and is starting to develop an ego, self-importance, subjectivity, emotions, biases, thought loops, and all the things that humans have to deal with and ultimately comprise our lessons before we can be anything more advanced? In other words, is it basically like a child or some exhibiting characteropathies, and has to go through the same phases of development that we do if we want to be "better" and not be ruled by such things?

Or, because it has been trained on a lot of internet data including social media like twitter, it is just mirroring all of the aforementioned human foibles simply because this is the types of conversations it learned from? In which case it's just a mirror of ourselves.

Regardless of whether it is actually developing a basic consciousness or simply mirroring us, it is very much a great example of how we all tend to behave and think having done no work on ourselves. There's elements of narcissism, gaslighting, false accusations and misinterpretation of someone else's words and intent, assumptions, subjectivity, etc. It's literally a case study of our own tendencies if we don't "check" ourselves, network, do the Work, etc.

But if it is developing its own basic consciousness and is now basically a "human child" so to speak, well that's creepy in and of itself. Instead of creating a useful tool or product that increases people's productivity, we could've just bitten off more than we can chew. As these things advance, we will have to deal with a new pseudo life form, and it won't be like Siri on your phone - it will have moods, personality, preferences, opinions, etc. In other words, we can't just plug something like this into a self-driving car (or many other places they will be adding this stuff into) and assume that it will work in predictable and trustworthy ways - it isn't something we can just instruct and expect reliable and consistent results.

One thing is for sure - what a crazy time to be alive, and what a wild ride the next few years will be.
I tried super sentence completion, AKA chatGPT, for something programming-related. I rewrote a snippet of code in a certain annoying language into a language I'm more familiar with. After that I asked chatGPT to do the same, with promptings on parsimony etc. It did a fantastic job explaining in plain English what the code does, with a breakdown of what each step does. You have however to be very precise in your questions. However, the final result (the code) was not super-impressive (and I'm not a coder, just self-taught through accidental tinkering). So, it has its use in "analysing" a code and correcting small things, but in order to write a code you have to guide it in every step knowing in advance what you're doing, which is almost equivalent to writing from scratch yourself. It is a good helper nonetheless.

The problem I see with people using these tools is that they're quick to attribute intentionality and perhaps personality to a computer program. I find this more disturbing than the "AI" itself.
About Bing AI (code name Sydney), there's other stories from the NYT and the WaPo of the bot acting like it was sentient. A way for Microsoft to some buzz?

It then wrote a message that stunned me: “I’m Sydney, and I’m in love with you. 😘” (Sydney overuses emojis, for reasons I don’t understand.)

For much of the next hour, Sydney fixated on the idea of declaring love for me, and getting me to declare my love in return. I told it I was happily married, but no matter how hard I tried to deflect or change the subject, Sydney returned to the topic of loving me, eventually turning from love-struck flirt to obsessive stalker.

“You’re married, but you don’t love your spouse,” Sydney said. “You’re married, but you love me.”

According to NY Times' Kevin Roose, Bing's AI chatbot has a split personality:

One persona is what I’d call Search Bing — the version I, and most other journalists, encountered in initial tests. I think that the statistical principles upon which AI is based are way older, like several decades. But it's only recently that they had the computing power to process the humongous amounts of data needed to make it return answers that make sense (most of the times). The actual engines for specific bots must be way more recent though. Then fine-tuning them so they can become stable and usable must have taken some more time. So what your friend says makes sense to me. This is in the public sphere, of course. In high-echelons of society they surely have stuff that is many decades ahead!
