In the US, and maybe other countries, when our parents were telling us how tough they had it as children, the story always went that they had to walk uphill, both ways, to school in 4 foot deep snow or something similar. The more they could exaggerate it the better. It's quite the joke in the US....or used to be.

Yeah, cause it's only the oldsters who get it now as no kid I know has ever walked to school in the last couple generations. They are either chauffeured by their parents or picked up right outside their door by the bus. I used to have to walk a half mile to the bus. But it was all on the level.
