Canadian Orwellian world: Lockdowns, vaccines passports and more

I articles, I keep running into a reference of a 60 Minutes episode that exposes Nazis in Canada. It's this one from Feb. 2, 1997 titled 'Canada's Dark Secret'.

In an RT article from Sept. 25, 2023, titled Canada saluting a Ukrainian Nazi was no accident, was links to two articles from in The Jewish News from Northern California in 1997. I have a vague memory of this in the news from then.

Canada admits letting in 2,000 Ukrainian SS troopers

By Tom Tugend | February 7, 1997

LOS ANGELES — The Canadian government, with British complicity, admitted more than 2,000 members of a notorious Ukrainian Waffen-SS division in 1950, the Simon Wiesenthal Center has charged.

In a related case, the CBS news program "60 Minutes" reported that about 1,000 SS men and Nazi collaborators, mainly from the Baltic states, moved to Canada about the same time.

And the German public broadcasting network reported that 50,000 war criminals receive "victim pensions" from the German government. German sources say 1,882 are Canadian residents.

Almost all the suspected war criminals and collaborators have lived openly under their own names in Canada for 47 years.

The Wiesenthal Center's dean, Rabbi Marvin Hier, and its Canadian representative, Sol Littman, addressed a news conference Monday after meeting with Canadian Solicitor General Herb Gray, who is in charge of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Gray "seemed genuinely disturbed by the material we presented and promised to investigate the charges," Hier said.

Littman, who has been researching Nazis in Canada since 1980, said the 14th Volunteer Waffen-SS Grenadier Division, aka the Galicia Division, largely comprised Ukrainians who served with Nazi police battalions and death squads.

The surviving 9,000 division members surrendered to the British at war's end, and were taken to England.

In 1950, Britain appealed to Commonwealth countries to admit them. Canada agreed to take 2,000, after being assured that their backgrounds had been checked and that they were cleared of complicity in war crimes.

But according to recently released British documents and interviews with officials who conducted the investigations, they were not screened, partly because none of the interrogators spoke their language, Littman said.

The 2,000 settled in major Canadian cities. About half are still alive.

One way of getting into postwar Canada "was by showing the SS tattoo," Canadian historian Irving Abella told "60 Minutes" interviewer Mike Wallace. "This proved that you were an anti-Communist."

He said that longtime Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau once told him his government did not pursue war criminals "because they were afraid of exacerbating relationships between Jews and Eastern European ethnic communities."

But John Sims, the Canadian official in charge of prosecuting war criminals, told "60 Minutes" that this "is going to be an important year, in which…considerable progress will be made in ridding this country of Nazis."

Recent reports of suspected war criminals living openly in Canada follow a November Jerusalem Post series calling Canada a "near-blissful refuge" for Nazis.

Steven Rambam, a New York private detective working with two Post reporters, located about 150 suspected war criminals in Canada, often by looking them up in phone books.

Masquerading as a professor from a fictitious American university, Rambam, a former member of the Jewish Defense League, secretly taped interviews with a former Lithuanian police chief who described in chilling detail his part in the execution of 5,000 Jews.

Meanwhile, the German TV program "Panorama" reported last week that 50,000 war criminals and members of army units who participated in atrocities were receiving monthly bonus pensions, ranging from hundreds to thousands.

The so-called "victim pensions" are added to the pensions of those who suffered World War II-linked disabilities, or to their dependents.

Although a 1950 German law excludes war criminals living abroad from getting such pensions, the law is apparently not enforced in Canada or the United States.

Elan Steinberg, executive director of the World Jewish Congress, has charged that some 3,300 Germans living in the United States receive the pensions.

Canada trying to deport citizen accused as SS guard in Latvia

By J. Correspondent | June 6, 1997

TORONTO — Canada's federal Justice Department has accused Eduards Podins, a 78-year-old resident of British Columbia, of being a former SS guard at the Valmiera concentration camp in Latvia.

The Justice Department is preparing denaturalization and deportation proceedings against Podins that are due to be heard in court this week.

Podins allegedly lied to Canadian immigration officials about his activities in the Latvian auxiliary police from 1941 to 1943.

He has been known to Canadian federal Nazi hunters at least since 1990, when he attempted to enter the United States.

At that time, he was turned back at the border because his name appeared on a computerized "watch list" of about 50,000 suspected war criminals maintained by the U.S. Office of Special Investigations, a branch of the Justice Department that investigates suspected war criminals.

However, despite letters in 1993 from the Canadian branch of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Toronto, federal officials waited nearly seven years to act against him.

Podins is the 11th alleged Nazi war criminal against whom federal officials have launched denaturalization or deportation proceedings during the past two years.

They have indicated that they intend to name a 12th suspect this month.

The action comes amid growing impatience within the Jewish community at the government's long-standing foot-dragging on the issue.

Simon Zuroff, head of the Wiesenthal Center's Jerusalem office, recently spoke at a community rally in Toronto where some 300 people protested the presence of alleged Nazi war criminals in Canada.

Zuroff noted that one suspect, Antanas Kenstavicius, died before he could be brought to justice.

Kenstavicius was allegedly a member of the 12th Lithuanian Police Battalion, which killed more than 50,000 Jews during World War II. He died in January at the age of 90.

A second suspect on the government's list of suspected war criminals also died before his case could be heard.

Josef Nemsila died at age 83 in April without facing justice for having been an officer in the Hlinka Guard, which slaughtered thousands of Jews and other civilians during the war.

Highlighting the government's recent resolve to bring alleged war criminals in Canada to justice, a federal court in which denaturalization and deportation arguments were being heard against Wasily Bogutin, 88, recessed in Toronto and reconvened in Donetsk, Ukraine, in late May.

Donetsk is a large southeastern Ukrainian city located near Selidovka, where Bogutin allegedly served in the police from 1941 to 1943; during that time he allegedly participated in the execution of a Jewish family and other brutal acts.

The court is expected to hear testimony from 13 Ukrainian witnesses before reconvening in Toronto in September.

As Canadian officials go to greater lengths to gather evidence against alleged Nazi war criminals residing in Canada, some Jewish officials are probing foreign archives to find out how so many people with such dubious reputations managed to slip into Canada with relative ease after the war.

Sol Littman, head of the Canadian branch of the Wiesenthal Center, recently charged that members of the British government willfully deceived Canadian immigration officials in order to get Canada to accept almost 2,000 suspected war criminals in the late 1940s.

Documents that Littman claims to have found in British archives show that officials there were aware that about 12,000 members of the 14th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division then being held in British internment camps had a reputation for brutality.

Although Britain assured Canada that all of these detainees had been investigated for war crimes, no thorough investigation was ever conducted, Littman said.

"They were desperate to get them out of Britain," said Littman.

And a third one from 2012.

Ottawa agrees to revisit case of suspected Nazi war criminal Vladimir Katriuk

Steve Mertl National Affairs Contributor
April 26, 2012

Canada's reputation for hunting down and ousting Nazi war criminals from the country has been spotty.

The government largely ignored their presence until the mid 1980s, according to the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies and when aging Nazis were exposed they often tied up their deportation in the courts for years.

So news that Ottawa was reopening the case of Vladimir Katriuk was welcomed this week by Holocaust survivors, the National Post reports.

A four-member delegation met with Justice Minister Rob Nicholson and Immigration Minister Jason Kenny to urge the government to take action against the Montreal resident after new evidence came to light tying him to a massacre in Eastern Europe during the Second World War.

The group, which included former prisoners of Dachau and Auschwitz, handed the ministers copies of a new academic research paper that described Katriuk's alleged role in the 1943 Khatyn massacre.

"Clearly the research that we presented is new information and I think that they have to analyze it but they have committed to us that they will do so," Wiesenthal Centre president Avi Benlolo told the Post. "They will look at it and they will get the wheels in motion to bring it back to the forefront before it's too late."

Time is running out to bring alleged Nazi war criminals to justice. Like Katriuk, who is 90, they are elderly and have lived most of their lives unmolested since coming to Canada.

Kenny spokeswoman Ana Curic said the government would not comment on specific cases but said it was committed to identifying and removing war criminals from Canada, "including revisiting new evidence on previously examined cases."

Katriuk, who was part of a Waffen-SS unit operating in Belarus, in the former Soviet Union during the war, has lived in Canada since 1951. The Federal Court ruled in 1999 that he lied to obtain Canadian citizenship but the cabinet decided in 2007 not to revoke it, the Post said.

But recently declassified documents used for a paper published in the academic journal Holocaust and Genocide Studies implicated Katriuk in the 1943 massacre of residents of the village of Khatyn, whom the Germans suspected were supporting partisan forces.
"Katriuk's participation in the Khatyn massacre is confirmed by multiple testimonies, and in some detail," the paper's author Per Anders Rudling told the Post.

"The testimonies are consistent in identifying Katriuk as a machine gunner at Khatyn, and indeed in other atrocities. Together, the material produces a compelling evidence that Katriuk was indeed an active participant in the massacre."

Katriuk, who said he was unaware of Rudling's paper, said he testified that he did not join the Waffen-SS battalion voluntarily and that his role was limited to guarding villagers and livestock.

Benlolo said Kenny also committed to revisiting the case of Helmet Oberlander, an ethnic German from the Ukraine accused of being part of a Nazi death squad. The government had his Canadian citizenship revoked but the Federal Court of Appeal struck down the decision.

The Wiesenthal Centre estimates about 2,000 Nazi war criminals lied their way into Canada after the war but were largely ignored until 1985, when the government's Deschenes Commission looked into the question. It recommended changes to the law to make it easier to prosecute or deport suspected war criminals. But since then only a handful of cases have been dealt with.

"There is no joy in seeing these men expelled from Canada, - just the knowledge that we have done something on behalf of those who were killed by these men and hopefully, at last, a sense of justice," Holocaust survivor Max Iland said in a Wiesenthal Centre news release.

From the Postil Magazine, we have this article about Nazi monuments in Canada!

However, when I took that url and removed the space, the page would not load for me!

I should have caught that space, which still took me to a page full or links to various report options (not the one from Jacques) and the logical pick was a dead-end.
The link is working for me

Yes, thanks. There is a lot of report reading there.
There's just too much hate for Russia in Parliament.

Yes, carefully crafted hate. Go back to the first JT win, wherein then foreign affairs minister, Stephane Dion (who was working with Russia on Arctic affairs), got shuffled out and replaced by a very junior, well orchestrated Freeland. Everything changes as is known.
Hunka's wife was British, married in 51.

Here is a missing link to the above (2018):

(1931 – 2018) – Margaret passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday March 21, 2018 at the age of 87 years. She is survived by her husband of 67 years Yaroslav Hunka. Dear mother of Martin (Theresa) & Peter (Darlene). She was a loving grandma to 4 grandchildren Leshya Lecappelain (Kelsey), Natalka Hunka, Robin Hunka and Aaron Hunka. Also survived by her sister Frances Collins of England. Predeceased by her brother Oliver Edgerton. Margaret was born in Studley, Warwickshire England. She met Yaroslav after the Second World War. They married in 1951, immigrating to Canada in 1954 where they settled in Toronto. Margaret had many passions in life, including yoga, reading, gardening and especially traveling to new countries. A person of seemingly endless patience, Margaret never had a cross word to say about anyone. Always supportive of her family, she was there to lend an ear and offer advice in her ever gentle way. Family receiving friends at HILLSIDE FUNERAL SERVICES, 362 Airport Rd., on Saturday March 24th from 4 until 6 pm. A funeral service will be held at the St. Volodymir Cemetery Chapel in Oakville on Monday March 26th at 11am. Donations in memory of Margaret to the Alzheimer Society (www.alzheimer.ca) would be gratefully acknowledged by her family.

From of all things, a celebrity page, and here is a little more on the family, including photo with Rota - and guess who? The photo is from Euromadain that includes Rota, Hunka's son and Karina Gould (House Speaker who tried to strike the whole thing from Official records). Note: Don't know where sons Peter and Martin fit in (and there are children) - what they knew or did not, and children should not pay a price for what's on the family tree; unless like Freeland who lied by omission, if not outright.

Concerning Hunka being an"Honorary Citizen of Berezhany," did a little reading on Berezhany during the war, and oh boy, much horror was done in that city and region.

Said here:

The Soviet rule 1939 - 1941

When Soviets entered Berezhany, over night chaos broke loose, though without bloodshed. The uppermost were made lowly and the lowly became uppermost. The newly arrived Russians bought out everything there was to buy. The stores were emptied and closed down. Farmers stopped bringing their produce to town. Before long there was a shortage of foodstuffs and commodidities. The size of population in town grew from ady to day, due to the constant flow of refugees from the West and the arrival of the Soviet Government officials from the East. In a short time, the Jewish population increased from 3,500 to over 12,000. The population of the town reached 35,000. To solve the problem of dwelling the refugees used every vacant store, every synagogue and every hut and cabin. The poverty and shortage grew from ady to day.

On the other side, depending on what is read and who is telling, there was the great prison massacres by the Soviets (NKVD) in 1941.

Then came 1943.

All in all and in every which way, those were horrible times.

Another article that seems to keep popping up is Multiculturalism, memory, and ritualization: Ukrainian nationalist monuments in Edmonton, Alberta, from 2011. Now, it's behind a paywall but there are some notes that are posted. Although not specific to Canada, I thought the mention of 'Churchill joining with the devil (Soviet Union) to fight Hitler' in this note, and the different view for today of 'Canada joining the devil (Ukrainian Nazis) to fight Putin' depends on where you sit. However, all that is thrown out at the end with the revelation of the 'third force'.

Per A. Rudling: "Like the work by any nationalist activist, this book should be treated with some caution. [Lubomyr Yaroslav] Luciuk avoids the difficult questions, obfuscates the openly pro-fascist, pro-Nazi nature of the attempted OUN(b) state. Typical for the pro-OUN apologetics, it uncritically repeats Stets'ko's denial of his own fascist activities. “On relations between the Ukrainian nationalist movement and the Germans, [Yaroslav] Stetsko stated: ‘Only three nations stood against Bolshevism at the time – Germany, Italy, and Japan. We were not interested in the political systems prevailing in those countries, any more than Churchill was interested in what was going on in the Soviet Union when he said he'd join the devil himself if the latter went against Hitler. Those three states were against the international status quo…. When we proclaimed Ukrainian independence we wanted to demonstrate to the Allies that there was another conception, another force, at play in the world, that they should be fighting against both the Nazis and the Soviets” (Luciuk 293–94)."

Matt Ehret talks (1.08.00) with John Helmer a few days ago.

John brings up the question, of where did the Hunka's ("big shots in North Bay") accrue their wealth from - moving from Martin (Redpath) to their family roots. Helmer looks to Martin's contributions to Rota's own campaign, and then unpacks who was there beside Hunka in parliament, and what it may mean.

John said "You can bet your life, Freeland and Gould vetted Rota's speech." Matt said (paraphrasing), you could see how Rota did not write that introduction speech that he read, and he read it well.

John goes on to describe how in the preamble, Churchill is brought up and how Canadians fought in 'their' war, British war, however never says who that war was against (Nazi's in the crowd as special guests). Moreover, John said there was nothing in the speech about the Poles, only defense of Ukraine for the rules based order of democracy, yet every Pole would know, as John is related through family to Poles, who he reminds, like his family roots, were murdered by people like Hunka's SS Waffen.

The Canadian parliamentary "shame/shock looked" only to the Jewish people (appeasing Jewish Canadians divide with Jewish Ukrainians) - and mentions Gould (Jewish Canadian from Ceckoslvakia).

Matt looks at why, and he askes the question, was it just hubris's or what was their reason to do this...and more. Helmer responds, no, this is what they are sayin now as it was in the 20's and 30's, "they want to kill Russians, they hate Russians, it's a race war {against both Russian and Jews}…." John then gets into the British role - the end of the war, SS POW's in British (and American) hands.

John brings up Irwin Cotler (retired), a major Liberal party figure - ex Minister of Justice, Attorney General, now speaking from Israel, who said a few days ago that after the war it was easier to come to Canada as a Nazi then a Jew, essentially (many Canadians already know this, or used to). The "answer" relates to 1948 where John says that the British looked at holocausts survivors etc. and equated them as being more sympathetic to Russia, to communisms (this gets into Freeland and the question that Rebel News brings up of the old Deschênes Commission that took place in Canada, and the PTB don't want that opened up again - War Criminals). So, they are trying to hold together an alliance (a not said and uneasy alignment of Jewish Zionist factions against the Russians). They need them. So, "diminish the scandal and pacify the Jewish community, the Israel community, but keep the alliance between the Jews, including Vladimir Zelenskyy and his supporter Igor Kolomoisky... {unheard part} ...the Oligarchy of Ukraine. Preserve the alliance between them and the state of Israel and Canada's support." - this a continuation from after 1945.

Helmer continues discussing the 1991 Russian revolution, that opened up files, wherein many people from outside were exposed for what they had done - leading to the U.S. and a war criminals nested there (in a major case one was deported and prosecuted).

Matt brings up some quirky questions on what appears to be tacit relations between Israel and the war featuring neo-Nazi groups, even mellowing views on groups like Azov. John brings it back to Canada while acknowledging what Matt said, and yet knowing it is difficult, and then back to Gould (being Jewish), where she is looking like she is trying to say, don't politicize this (recall she tried to strike it from Official record), because if it gets out there, the antiemetic cards will fly at the Canadian government themselves. The real anti-Semites are the Hunker's, etc,. the SS Waffen division, and John said, "they didn't just kill Jews - Grandpa Chomiak didn't just kill Jews, take their property, drive their car, live in their apartment, steal their artwork and steal their printing press. That is what papa Chomiak did. No, no, they were anti-Semitic, they were anti Russian too, and they also murdered Poles."

The state (parties) and groups are worried that people will start seeing what is going on in the "war enterprise for what it is," namely a race war against Russia. They are worried what will happen in France, Germany, in the Netherlands "or anywhere else in Europe" et cetera. Helmer said that "the answerer is almost certainly no, its set for Poland." (Matt jumps in and speaks of Poland breaking, reversing). John says "lets see how far the Polish government will go" - elections coming.... "Complicated {being connected to NATO and under the heavy thumb of the U.S.}" There is more on Poland, including John talking about working with the Polish when files were looked at on Chomiak, with help from the IPN. John is also saying that if the IPN goes through their files and puts Hunka at the scene of war crimes ("disgusting" crimes), they may directly ask for the guy - the British have bigger files due to interrogations, and the Canadians and British are not about to let Hunka go to Warsaw. The media will protect.

Matt mentions after the Hunka fiasco fact, that the Ukraine government decided to (cough) issue a Hunka a postal stamp in commemoration to the man still living - another hero is born, or reanimated for the fight against Russia. Matt goes back to the British role of importation into Canada of Nazi's and collaborators; not all were of course. These questions go back to John for comment, and Helmer does not know what will happen in the UK, the press, or of people asking questions of their government/military role. John does say that in the Chomiak files (with help from within Poland and Alberta), that U.S. army intelligence understood that Chomiak could be used as a future asset - "underground warfare against the Soviet administration of Ukraine" - and his spying aspects were discussed "a family trait" - Chomiak was an employee from 45 - 47/8 for U.S. army intelligence, so why did he go to Canada - a puzzle, was it for what he did and stole, or something else. No one wants the files opened, certainly Freeland does not.

Helmer turns things around and askes Matt a question directly, that being in Montreal, how does this play out with the French there? Matt said, nothing much is going on with people or the press. However he said that the Deschênes Commission is getting some play, it is being brought up. John askes a second question, essentially, is the government in Quebec, its libraries removing books, rewriting history. Matt said he has notice that school boards (some) had announced purging of books published prior to 2008 - more around the sensitivity/inclusive language schtick. He thinks the PTB probably would like to "massage' the narratives of WWII along the way. John then askes, what about blacks in Canada who fought in war, they knew they were fighting with Russia i.e., many would not have come home if not for the Russians (including more from U.S. and Canada). Matt was not ready to look at that yet - it needs to percolate, he said. Matt then said, it brings up all of these wired things - command structures, NATO, intelligence, and he would like to know the purpose of protecting people like Chomiak as far as the global geopolitical - also not forgetting that many Ukrainians did not like Nazis and that there has been this, from within associations, a rooting out, changing focus, if I get what he was saying.

John said in closing, that he hopes this story "burns a little brighter..."

Unpacking the Nazi Skeletons in Canada’s Closet with John Helmer

In this Canadian Patriot Podcast, Matt talks with John Helmer about the many unreconstructed Nazis that were given sanctuary as part of NATO's international secret armies post WWII with a special focus on Yaroslav Hunka (feted by Parliament on Sept. 22) and Chrystia Freeland's beloved grandfather Michael Chomiak.

How are the narrative controllers currently attempting to reduce this scandal to a topic revolving around events locked in a cage 80 years in the past devoid of any connection to current events? How do both anti-Russian secular jews like Kolomoisky and Zelensky resolve their Jewishness with their devoted support for modern nazis working with the Ukrainian military and Civil Service... such as the Azov and Aidar Battalions? What role does Irwin Cotler play within this game or Humka's son Martin whose vast wealth acrued through his role as CFO of Redpath Mining Holdings? What will Poland do with this scandal and what secrets might their archives or the still-classified Deschenes commission report on Nazism in Canada hold today?

One might imagine the Russian's themselves have extensive files.

Putin weighs in on Canadian parliament Nazi scandal

"The now-former speaker of Canada’s parliament is either an “idiot” or a “scoundrel,” Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested."

“If [Rota] says that he [the veteran] fought against the Russians, he cannot help but understand that he fought on the side of Hitler or was a fascist collaborator. If a person does not know that Hitler fought against Russia during the war, then he is an idiot or did not study too well in school. And if he knows and at the same time calls an SS veteran a hero, then he is a scoundrel,” Putin explained."

Via link-jumping, I found a helpful 14:39 minute video about the Galizien Division in Britain by Mark Felton. In Canada, ~2000 Ukrainian Nazi's were admitted because they were 'automatically anti-communist'. In the UK, apparently 8,000+ members of that SS Division were allowed entrance to that country via a 'geographical switch' and support from Pope Pius XII. Before they were shipped to Britain, they were held at a British POW camp at Rimini, Italy where all the prisoners were alphabetically recorded in what's known as the Rimini List. The list is stored at the Shevchenko Library and Archives in Notting Hill, London. Not available online.

I then found this article:

...which has been posted before in the Donbass thread. But there was a link in there that sent me to a huge 21 chapter article titled The Chomiak-Freeland Connection. I'm not sure if this has been posted already somewhere on the forum but it's dated March 22, 2017. It's gonna take me a while to go through it. Chapter 10 is all about Freeland's early days when she joined the Edmonton branch of Plast scouting, and Saturday schools. In an interview she gave, when she was eleven, to the Ukrainian radical newspaper Student on the difference between the public school and Saturday school, she said:

"historically, geographically and gramatically (sic) speaking ... you learned more in the Saturday school.... One of the biggest differences though is that the Saturday schools are much more patriotic and religious, so that history will have a lot of facts about how brave and gallant the Ukrainian kings were. And it will usually be stressed. Sometimes they'll talk about the negative points, but their perspective will be that of the Ukrainian nation."[iv] (Emphasis added.)

A few more snips:

"Dido-gate":

Dido-gate.jpg

Here is a November 1986 article in the CIUS Newsletter (p.14) announcing Chrystia Freeland's government-funded summer job writing articles for the Encyclopedia of the Ukraine. She was 18. This encyclopedia was the brainchild and postwar fixation of the leading Ukrainian-Nazi collaborator, Volodymyr Kubijovich. Kubijovych was the boss of Freeland's maternal grandfather, Michael Chomiak, throughout the war.

In the above link to the 21 page article, in chapter 3 there's a quote that is eerily similar to Rota's admittance. It's true that this is probably a coincidence but it was just weird to read due to timing:

We know that Chrystia Freeland was made aware, in great detail, of her Ukrainian grandfather's pivotal role as a newspaper editor overseeing this hatemongering "fake news," because she was acknowledged in a scholarly article on that subject. The article, "Krakivski visti and the Jews, 1943," was published in 1996 by John Paul Himka, a prominent Ukrainian Canadian scholar who was then a professor of history at the University of Alberta. He listed Freeland as having reviewed his article and he credited her, among a few others, with "pointing out problems and suggesting improvements." Himka then added an additional caveat, saying: "In the case of this particular article, I would like to say explicitly what should go without saying: that I alone am responsible for the views expressed herein."http://coat.ncf.ca/research/Chomiak-Freeland/C-F_3.htm#_edn1

@Benjamin, concerning the Canada Files, was aware of that site and have not checked in some time. It does have a lot to sift through.

As for the film (thanks) - and briefly noted by Mark Felton in it, was that he said many of the SS Ukrainian division men were also used as guards in Polish camps:

Via link-jumping, I found a helpful 14:39 minute video about the Galizien Division in Britain by Mark Felton. In Canada, ~2000 Ukrainian Nazi's were admitted because they were 'automatically anti-communist'. In the UK, apparently 8,000+ members of that SS Division were allowed entrance to that country via a 'geographical switch' and support from Pope Pius XII. There are many articles pouring out, and a very short version might look something like the following:

  • the 14th Waffen (SS Galicia Division) contained some hard core anti-Russians and anti-Jews, recruiting from the Ukrainian areas such as Berezhany, which is where Hunka came from - schooled at the Berezhany gymnasium - see the Israel Times. Recruitment was massive.
  • the 14th did a great deal of killing/murder from 41 to 44 - then they retreated fast to Germany and were captured and placed in a Italian POW camp under British control.
  • being that the British were not so sympathetic to Russia, and knowing the Ukrainian 14th were anti-communists, what to do. They did not want to ship Jews out through the British realm all the way to Canada, being they worried they were overly sympathetic to communisis, no, they picked the Nazi 14th SS to settle the realm. As you stated, Benjamin, 8,000 were dispersed (people contained on the Rimini List that does not seem to exist, except it had existed in intelligence hands) - pockets established through the UK, and thousands to Canada, with the U.S. picking up who they wanted, like taking in Reinhard Gehlen, and who he wanted to help assist US Amy Intelligence.
  • It was always about Russia (and for many it was Jews), and it would also not surprise me if initially some of the 14th were earmarked and possibly used for Gladio operations, yet will never probably know.
  • flying under the radar in the Canadian west, was Peter Savaryn, who received the "Order of Canada in 1987" from Ottawa (curiously that was Brian Mulroney as PM, and he also was the one who initially allowed Polish intelligence to come into Canada along side the Deschênes commission before it was bubble wrapped). Following the Hunka-Ottawa-Knee debacle, the Governor General was forced to strip Savaryn (who had died) of the Order (of course just recently after the big catastrophe). Both Hunka and Savaryn were reported to have served in the same unit - and see National Post.
  • it is highly likely that Chomiak (Krakivski Visti editor) knew both, and as said, Martin Hunka had the endowment at the University of Alberta's Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies (CIUS), that is now canceled.
  • the British M's, (OSS) CIA, CISIS (and deep military backgrounders) were certainly well aware, as was/is Polish intelligence and the Russians, and very likely the Mossad.
  • as for Ottawa, cui bono? A wrench may seem to have been purposely put into the gears as this did not happen by chance.
Throwing caution to the wind, the leftist Jacobin writes - Republished from The Orchard:

The Coincidences Behind Canada’s Nazi-Honoring Debacle Are Deeply Unsettling

The grandfather of Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s deputy prime minister, worked for a Nazi newspaper that recruited for the Galicia Division of the Waffen-SS — the same division as Yaroslav Hunka, the Nazi who was recently honored by Canada’s Parliament.

Now that Canadian parliament has ignited an international conversation about the dark side of Ukrainian nationalism by giving a standing ovation to Waffen-SS veteran Yaroslav Hunka, it might be worth revisiting the role Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland’s grandfather played in recruiting young men like Hunka to the Nazi cause.

During Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s September 22 House of Commons visit, Freeland was one of hundreds of parliamentarians who stood to applaud after now-former speaker of the house Anthony Rota announced the presence of a “Ninety-eight-year-old Ukrainian Canadian who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians during the Second World War.”

The ensuing controversy must have created a sense of déjà vu for Freeland, who is long overdue for setting the record straight about the nationalist hagiography she’s constructed around her Ukrainian nationalist forebear — if only the media would ask her about it.

Michael Chomiak, Freeland’s maternal grandfather whom she’s repeatedly cited as a political inspiration, edited a Nazi newspaper for Ukrainian exiles in occupied Krakow called Krakivski Visti, which was printed on a press seized from a Jewish owner.

Despite the equivocations of Liberal partisans, these facts aren’t in dispute. Freeland, in fact, helped edit a 1996 academic paper on the depiction of Jews in Krakivski Visti, written by her uncle, University of Alberta scholar John-Paul Himka.

At some point, Freeland decided it was politically useful to present the elder Chomiak as an avowed liberal democrat sand the “most passionate” of Canadian patriots. When Chomiak’s history resurfaced in 2017, no doubt with some help from Russian authorities {actually it was Polish authorities}, Freeland claimed it was all a bunch of Russian propaganda.

The reason I bring this family history up is to highlight the newspaper’s relationship with the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, or Galicia Division, in which Hunka served alongside perpetrators of the 1941 Lviv Pogrom and under the command of a coterie of diehard Nazis.

Millions of Ukrainians fought valiantly against the Nazis during World War II with the Red Army, including Zelensky’s grandparents. But Chomiak, like Hunka, wasn’t one of them.

When the Galicia Division was founded in 1943, it received a boost from the Nazi-aligned Ukrainian press, including Krakivski Visti, which ran articles encouraging young Ukrainian men to join the Waffen-SS to fight Communism.

How the Waffen-SS was portrayed in media like Chomiak’s Krakivski Visti helped shape how Ukrainian nationalists like Hunka perceived the Third Reich, which they — at best naively — believed would help fulfill their nationalist ambitions.

From the LA Holocaust Museum’s description of its collection of Ukrainian collaborationist newspapers, which includes Krakivski Visti and its Lviv counterpart, Lvivski Visti:

Everyday attention was given to economic and cultural life, and especially to the support of the German war effort. In 1943 and 1944, both Lvivski Visti and Krakivski Visti hailed the German-approved formation of the 14th Waffen SS Division Halychyna, composed of Ukrainian volunteers. Ukrainians prefered [sic] to see this formation, especially at the end of the war, as a nucleus for a future Ukrainian Army, calling it the First Ukrainian Rifle Division.
Hunka hailed from Berezhany, which is located much closer to Lviv than Krakow, so he would have, if anything, been a Lvivski Visti reader.

The articles in its collection are, of course, in Ukrainian, which I cannot read. But, according to the LA Holocaust Museum, there is an appeal to join the Galicia Division in a May 1943 issue of Lvivski Visti.

A University of Alberta history PhD dissertation from Ernest Gyidel specifically about Krakivski Visti notes parenthetically that the newspaper included “official announcements and newspaper articles” from the Galicia Division.

Gyidel describes how the role the paper’s coverage of a June 1941 prison massacre committed by the Soviet secret police, the NKVD, in Western Ukraine played in getting young people to volunteer for the Nazis:

The 1941 tragedy hit them and the rest of the Western Ukrainian population hard: they have lost either relatives or people whom they knew in the massacre. Two years later, when the UCC [Ukrainian Central Committee] campaigned for the Waffen-SS Division Galizien, which was reflected in Krakivski Visti, many young Galician Ukrainian men enlisted because images of the prison murders from summer 1941 — which was their first exposure to the Soviet mass brutality — became entrenched in their minds.
Although there’s no reason to believe they ever met, there’s a clear convergence between the wartime activities of Chomiak and Hunka.

In this regard, it’s difficult to regard Freeland’s revisionist family history as an isolated incident.

Rather, as I’ve argued since I began writing on this topic a few years ago, it’s part of a broader trend in the Ukrainian diasporic establishment of rehabilitating the image of Nazi sympathizers as anti-Communist freedom fighters, which is why monuments to the 14th Waffen exist in Oakville, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta, as well as in Detroit and Philadelphia.

It’s also why, in 2019, a $30,097 endowment fund for the University of Alberta’s Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) was established in Hunka’s name without controversy until now.

He didn’t appear out of nowhere. Plenty in Canada must’ve known,” Twitter/X account @maoteddymao noted aptly.

It shouldn’t be surprising that the CIUS would accept an endowment in the name of an SS fighter. CIUS cofounder Peter Savaryn who served as the University of Alberta’s chancellor from 1982 to 1986, was himself a 14th Waffen veteran.

In 2011, according to a Journal of Slavic Military Studies article by Lund University academic Per Anders Rudling, the CIUS established endowments in honor of three Waffen-SS veterans: Roman Kolisnyk, Levko Babij, and Edward Brodacky,

On September 27, in response to requests for comment from numerous media outlets, University of Alberta interim provost and vice president (academic) Verna Yiu said the university is closing down the Hunka endowment, returning its funds to the original donor and undergoing a review of the school’s naming policy “to ensure alignment with our values.”

Perhaps the Hunka affair will serve as a catalyst for a long-overdue reckoning with how Canadian officials, in the name of anti-Communism, turned a blind eye to Nazi sympathies among eastern European nationalist émigrés, including our Ukrainian allies.

Freeland could show incredible courage and moral fortitude by leading this discussion, but doing so would require acknowledging that an important piece of her personal mythology is a lie.

Probably wrong, as it is just so insane to have had this happen in Ottawa, yet one can almost smell a rat in all this, some kind of set up...

I'm on Chapter 10 of the 21. When I first started reading it, there was something going on with my left ear. Long, high pitches, pops, lots of activity lasting 15/20 mins? Strange. But I'm really enjoying this series, even if some of it seems out of place.

the Rimini List that does not seem to exist, except it had existed in intelligence hands

In the Mark Felton video, there is a page shown @11:16 that is apparently from that list.

There is also a reply to an email that someone sent, inquiring about the Rimini List. I found it on a site called Rimini DP Camps in Italy (DP means 'displaced persons'). It's interesting that the page apparently has a lot of photos of prisoners from the Rimini camp.

Emphasis theirs:
6/1/2019 I wrote to England to find out once and for all about the Riiimini lists. This is what I received:

Hello Dianne,
Thank you for your e-mail.

The Rimini List is in the possession of the Archive collection and not in the public domain. It contains thousands of names and is not something that our Archive is sending off or providing copies.

Archive can check if your father was a member of the Division or not and send the information to you.

There is a £40 fee for such service. It can be paid by cheque, card or transfer money to the AUGB account.

If you would like to go ahead with this please let me know. You can fill the form https://www.augb.co.uk/…/uploaded…/tracing-roots-details.pdf
send me your father’s details.

Thank you.
Kind regards,
Ludmila

There is also this thread on the Axis History Forum where several people claim it exists, most notably Mike James Melnyk who wrote two books on the history of the 14th Waffen SS Division (which can be found on Amazon) saying he has a photocopy of the first page (which might be the same page in the video? The list starts 1, 2, 3, ...).

As an aside, and yet not the first in Canada, this deals with France and Philippe Pétain (cringe at citing CBC) and a mountain dedicated to him (between Alberta & BC). It later was brought to public attention, which Eva makes mention.

Apparently for a while, only the Alberta side of the mountain changed the name (a half & half mountain) and then BC jumped on board:

But the mountain retained Pétain's name on the B.C. side. So when his father died in 2020, Taylor picked up the cause in his memory, haranguing B.C. politicians about the issue.

Then last week, on June 29, the B.C. government followed suit, removing the name from the mountain peak as well as the Pétain Glacier and Pétain Creek.

The mountain is in the Kananaskis country, west of Calgary, and is still listed on Parks Canada's website under its old Pétain name, although I've never climbed mount fascist before which today it is called Unknown Peak (except for Parks Canada website as previously mentioned).

Putin weighs in on Canadian parliament Nazi scandal

Maria Zakharova had also weighed in, although much more was said:

MOSCOW, 27 September (BelTA) - The Canadian authorities have been the leading voice of the support for Banderites. They spearhead the efforts to falsify the history of World War II, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a news briefing as she commented on the scandal with the celebration of the Ukrainian SS veteran in the Canadian parliament, BelTA has learned.

"This is the pinnacle of immorality of the Canadian government," Maria Zakharova said.

The 98-year-old Yaroslav Gunko (who is known in Canada as Yaroslav Hunka) served as a volunteer in the SS Galicia Division, she recalled.

“He was applauded by Prime Minister Trudeau, the Speaker, members of the House of Commons, and the Western diplomatic corps, including, what is unsurprising, the German ambassador. This scandal continues to elicit outrage and condemnation even among Canada's closest allies. Canada's ruling Liberal Party did not expect this. As I see it, this took them by surprise. Trudeau says he was kind of unaware of the Speaker's initiative. Apologies were immediately offered by the Speaker who is no longer the Speaker. The Canada PM team is now doing damage control wiping off the incriminating footage on the internet. You can hardly believe in the ignorance of the head of government and his right hand Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, the granddaughter of Banderite Mikhailo Khomyak. They want to persuade us they didn't know who they were applauding? How do they govern the country then? The most important thing here is something else. Not only did they know. They are the leading voice of this very campaign to support Banderites, representatives of the OUN-UPA and SS Galicia Division. They support both their direct participants in these criminal organizations and their followers. They sponsor all these structures in their modern versions in Ukraine," she noted.

"They [the Canadian authorities] knew what they were doing. They had been doing it for many years. It's just that this time they overplayed their hand at Russophobia. They insulted not only us, which they do regularly. They also insulted the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, anti-Polish mass terror. Although we do not understand why Ukraine's honoring of SS Galicia Division and Banderites does not insult the memory of the victims of the Holocaust," Maria Zakharova asked.

She recalled that Canada sheltered many of the surviving Ukrainian accomplices of Nazi Germany after the war. "Today, Canada has been spearheading the efforts in the West to falsify the history of World War II," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

She also drew attention to the complete lack of reaction to the Canadian parliament scandal from the Western members of the UN Security Council - the United States, the UK and France.

"It is outrageous that the Western community, the Western permanent members of the UN Security Council did not respond in any way to this blatant fact of support for neo-Nazism. Lack of official condemnation of the SS veteran honoring ceremony from the ‘great powers' is a shame that exposes them," Maria Zakharova emphasized.

"We view Canada as an extremely unfriendly state, whose authorities have tarnished themselves by condoning Nazism, betraying their own history, and we will shape our policy accordingly," Maria Zakharova said.

Spot on, Maria.
