Hey y'alls,
The Am-EU group finishes the introduction and chapter 5 of William B. Irvine's
A Guide to the Good Life on December 1st. The recordings will be shared at a later point.
I've attached the mind map below in both PNG & PDF form. For readability, I've also printed the mind map in bulleted form here:
Chapter 5: The Dichotomy of Control - On Becoming Invincible
- Focusing more on the internal rather than the external is a key to "tranquility, freedom, and calm". Epictetus advises to make it a goal to desire things that are within our reach and are certain we can obtain. By changing our desires, we change our internal world.
- He also mentions that our primary desire should be not to be frustrated by desires that won't be able to be fulfilled (by circumstances out of our control).
- When one bases their desires on things he/she can't control, it is likely that it may disturb his/her tranquility.
- Epictetus' dichotomy of control translated into a trichotomy: "There are things over which we have complete control, things over which we have no control at all, and things over which we have some but not complete control".
- It's futile to worry about things over which we have no control over. This way we can focus energy on things we have control over, like opinions, impulses, desires, goals we set for ourselves, etc.
- Marcus Aurelius believes that humans, in their ability to assign value to things, gives them a pathway towards living the good life. Realizing and assigning the true value of things allows people to avoid grief, suffering, and anxiety. He also points out we have complete control over our character qualities and cultivating them.
- Examples include removing arrogance, rise above pleasures and pains, lusting after popularity, controlling temper, etc. These qualities as Marcus states, can be ours if we choose for them to be.
- (Redrock12): All you can do is your best, but it may not be good enough.
- (Mari): If you know you did your best, at least you won't have regrets or worry. There's also this link. In a test between overachievers and underachievers, they found that when they were told to do it for fun, the underachievers did much better.
- (Goemon_): In the movie, The Peaceful Warrior, it teaches to enjoy the moment, and don't worry about winning.
- (whitecoast): If and when does our acceptance of the current state of things just laziness?
- (Mari): Maybe there can be some middle path between worrying and achieving something. We try our best in the things we can control, but leave the things we really can't control to the universe.
- (Turgon): It's also important to frame these things in relation to a goal. Having these goals helps us aim and reach them.
- (Bluefyre): With setting goals, trauma impedes it by impacting the prefrontal cortex.
- (RedFox): One of the symptoms of this is they have no control and perhaps even don't care. For kids, it can take 20-30 years for the prefrontal cortex to develop.
- (RedFox): Healing this involves shifting from giving in to impulses to considering one's future self. Also, the more information that you have, the more compassionate you can be to yourself and others.
- Take for example a tennis match. We have some control over it via consistent practice, but not complete control over the game due to other factors. Winning isn't a certainty, but hope through action that we can bring it about. For a Stoic, instead of putting energy into trying to win the match (external goal), he/she instead should focus on playing to the best of his/her ability (internal goal).
- In this way, the Stoic will not feel frustrated for losing the tennis match.
- (Mari): One example is playing cards. Every Sunday, our family plays cards and folks are competitive. People can get upset, but for her, she enjoyed it and had fun despite losing. Just being there with her family was enough.
- (Bluefyre): There are things we can and don't control, and the wisdom to know the difference
- (anartist): Also setting a goal can even enhance this process.
- (anartist): When you look to psychopaths, they can't change their internal world, so they seek to change the external with full force.
- (Mari): Shares a section on Paul's letter on love - "Love does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it – pays no attention to a suffered wrong."
- In relation to handling rejections take for example an author getting his/her manuscript approved, in the Stoic way in part involves removing any external goal related to whether or not he/she will get a "yes", and instead having internal goals relating to how hard he/she works on the manuscript and how many submissions he/she does over a period of time.
- The sting of rejection is still there, but it will be greatly lessened. As the silver lining, this internalization of goals will increase his/her chances of getting an eventual manuscript approval.
- (whitecoast): There's a practice to work on rejections by asking a bunch of people unreasonable requests. Say you're at a coffee shop, try to ask if you can have a free coffee and you will likely be met with a no.
- (Laurs): To add on to this, is to not take things personally.
- (Mari): Jordan Peterson says to write down the worst possible scenario that can happen in your life.
- (RedFox): During COVID, we all tried to share the knowledge when and where we could while also practicing strategic enclosure. I'm sure there was an impact we made. Besmet says that the mass formation psychosis that enshrouds society is large, but small lights here and there can make a difference in preventing totalitarianism
General Notes
- (Anya112003): Why do they want war with Russia? They are really crazy.
- (Laurs): Recommends Yaweh to Zion. It explains largely why our world is the way it is. It goes into history.
- (Turgon): In that book, they say that they worship the old deity Seth.
- (Mari): Shares a video with a Rabbi explaining that the Jews are "aliens jews are aliens from a different dimension sent to conquer Earth".
- (Turgon): A rabbi owns Pornhub too.
- (Bluefyre): There's also that Rabbi Schmuley conundrum with Candace Owens.
- (Breo): Growing up among Jewish families, interactions felt ice cold & shallow, and it feels like you are talking to narcissists. There are some Jews in a similar situation too, feeling like outcasts.
- We are glad you found this forum!
- (Laurs): Check out the Stella Riley, particularly the Roundheads and Cavaliers series if you're looking for something more from romance novels. She weaves history in it.
- Working on oneself ala Gurdjieff and his concepts.
- (?): The Stoic principles to control one's desire and stuff relates to programming that Gurdjieff speaks of.
- (RedFox): These Greenbaumed states that utilize extreme control over the subconscious may not be permanent and may eventually be healed. The fact that it can be accessed at all means there can be a pathway forward.
- (Breo): Shares video: "Trained As A Spy At 10” - Sex Trafficking Survivor Anneke Lucas NAMES Her Billionaire Abusers.
- (Pecha): It took a lot--breathing exercises, meditation, etc. for her to come out with bravery and speak up about it.
- (Breo): It takes a whole lot for these SRA abuse victims to get to a point where they are stable. They need time and space, but when they do break out of the shell, it's a beautiful thing.
- (Breo): She may be on to something. These topics should be spoken among the general public, as they can learn so much about themselves and what to do about their trauma. People go about their lives living with symptoms of PTSD and don't even know it.
- (Bluefyre): Maybe that's why people need suffering in order to wake up ala the Cs.
- (RedFox): Trauma takes chunks of your brain and turns it off. As it stands, hyperbaric oxygen chambers can really help as it can help oxygenate deeply the cells. Combine it with thiamine too as it provides energy for the cells. Primally imprinting can be healed, and knowing that other people are going through trauma can help too.
- (Turgon): I feel a great transient sense of peace after doing HBOT. Less anxiety, etc.
- (Turgon): Thankfully there's been a whole lot of work on the nervous system and how it works. References Nervous System Expert by Irene Lyon.
