Cold wave over Europe

I did just that last week

 haha I nearly missed that. Smart move with smaller font :D
If it is about me , no worries , people here are quite used to temp. drops like this so we have our precautions and procedures developed if compared to other countries - I mean warmer areas , where snow is rather unusual thing.
I would define -20 as unpleasant , hardcore begins when its -30 and lower , especially when living near sea , because of strong humidity. It is much better inland where air is more dry.

But you are right , one should always remember to take and wear proper gear. This is crucial for survival.

And when you considers the wind factor and the weather is -40 or below, it would say that it is an inhospitable place. And if you add a strong humidity, well there is no word for that. Hopefully so far it lasts only for a couple of days.

I've heard that when it is 40 below, your face can freeze and pieces of it fall off!

We had a couple of days with minus 41 (factor wind included) and nothing happened (maybe I did not stay outside long enough). I must say at that weather that i put some cream in my face to prevent it from freezing.

What cream was it? I wonder if duck/coconut fat would work?

I can tell you exactly the name for the moment since i am not home but it is a cream done specially for this kind of weather when you want to do some sport outside.

I would say that the most important thing when it is cold like that is to nourish your skin to prevent it from freezing.

My take on it would be to:
- use as little(or seldom) "additives" as possible, use proper clothing(remove/put on according to conditions) in order to not getting used to greases etc(or too much clothing for that matter)
- when using additives do it before things start falling off :scared:

Telltales:
- places feel cold to touch and have no sensations themselves(rub places, get inside)
- doziness and feeling no cold... "aall is fine n' dandy..."(GET INSIDE)

What to do when freezing temperatures outside:
- move
- move
- move

What not to do when freezing temperatures outside:
- drink alcohol

That is true , but you really have to stay for a while and let that piece cool down a lot.
Covering is a key. Nose , toes , fingers are most vulnerable.

What to do when freezing temperatures outside:
- move
- move
- move

What not to do when freezing temperatures outside:
- drink alcohol

I`ll just add one more thing which is imo important.
Moving will NOT work if you are in water , It will cool you off waaay faster.

That is so true... Avantouinti is a totally different chapter(true such is done without sauna mind you).
But let us just stay out of the water for now and keep dry. :)
