Buenos Aires legislature approves the "Facial Recognition Law". Strong criticism for the advance on privacy rights.
Today, the Buenos Aires Legislature passed the Facial Recognition Law that will be used to detect criminals and fugitives from justice. The deputies approved amendments to the Public Safety Law to regulate the use of such surveillance and control technology.
It should be noted that a few weeks ago, the project was turned over to the Human Rights Commission, in order to obtain a more exhaustive analysis of the content and its modifications. However, this instance was ignored and led to the definitive treatment given to the project today in the premises.
On the other hand, representatives of civil rights organisations today expressed their rejection of the approved law.
In addition to being a strong intrusion into people's privacy, it is known that the system of cameras with facial recognition to "detect fugitives" gives an enormous amount of false positives, confusing innocent people with others sought by the judiciary.
