The first case of a new and potentially deadly virus circulating in China has been confirmed in Chicago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The patient returned to the United States on Jan. 13, from Wuhan, China, where an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus has been ongoing since December 2019, according to the CDC.

Authorities say the patient remains hospitalized but is in stable condition and is doing well.
This is the second confirmed case of the virus in the U.S.
The CDC earlier this week identified a Seattle-area man who had also contracted the virus after visiting Wuhan.
This is a developing story. Check back for details.

Gilead assessing potential use of Ebola drug as China virus treatment
January 23, 2020 - Gilead Sciences Inc said on Thursday it was assessing whether its experimental Ebola treatment could be used against the new coronavirus that has sickened hundreds of people in China and led to at least 18 deaths.

“Gilead is in active discussions with researchers and clinicians in the United States and China regarding the ongoing Wuhan coronavirus outbreak and the potential use of remdesivir as an investigational treatment,” a company spokesman said in an emailed statement.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) told Reuters his agency was working with Gilead to test the company’s antiviral drug in people infected with the new coronavirus.

NIAID had previously tested remdesivir in patients with Ebola and found it to be ineffective. Fauci said there is some indication that it may work better against this new virus from China.

Coronavirus infections can lead to respiratory illnesses, some of which can be severe and deadly such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). They can also be much milder. The common cold is a strain of coronavirus.

While it is not yet known if the drug will be effective against the new strain of coronavirus that emerged from the central Chinese city of Wuhan, testing in animals had shown activity against the SARS coronavirus.

China has put millions of people on lockdown in two cities at the epicenter of the outbreak as authorities around the world work to prevent its spread globally.

Davos, Jan 23 (AFP) - Clinical trials for a vaccine against the new virus sweeping China could be carried out in the summer, the head of an anti-epidemic coalition said on Thursday, as different companies announced research into the disease. "We can announce that we have three partnerships to develop vaccines against the novel coronavirus," Richard Hatchett, chief executive of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), said in Davos.

Our goal is to have these vaccines developed very rapidly and to move very rapidly to begin clinical trials, perhaps as early as the summer," Hatchett said during the annual World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort town. A fourth company, Novavax,
which has worked on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), said earlier it had also initiated development of a vaccine candidate.

There is no vaccine or antiviral treatment against the novel coronavirus detected in China, which has killed 18 people so far and has now spread internationally. Hatchett said the three partnerships were with Inovio Pharmaceuticals, a US-based company, the University of Queensland in Australia and Moderna, another US biotech firm.

Moderna is working with the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a US government agency. Shares in Inovio jumped 6.68 per cent on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, while Moderna stock was up 1.37 per cent and by a total of 6.5 per cent over two sessions.

Shares in other biotech companies also rose in expectation of growing interest in a vaccine against the virus. Stock in Novavax jumped 11.42 per cent after their announcements, while NanoViricides, which is conducting research into Ebola, rose 36.91 per cent.

Hatchett said that even if the virus had disappeared by the time a vaccine is developed, having one would still be "very advantageous". "If the virus doesn't disappear and it spreads globally, we will be glad that we made these investments today," he added.

Stephane Bancel, chief executive of Moderna, told AFP that his company planned to develop the vaccine at its plant in Boston with financing from CEPI. Bancel also said he planned clinical trials by the summer, adding "normally to develop traditional vaccines the same process would take two or three years".

The thousands of dead are being taken directly to incinerators. No funeral. No burial. Just burned.

What I don't understand is that we have 916 confirmed cases in China, 549 in Hubei province. That's a very little number compared to the total population of Hubei province, or even Wuhan.

And we have 23 confirmed cases abroad. Is it statistically normal to have that much cases abroad ? Wouldn't this be the case if there were already many more cases in China?
