Cryogenic Chamber Therapy / Cold Adaptation

Re: Cryogenic Chamber Therapy

Hi dancingtiger96, welcome to the forum :) . I'm not sure of any cryogenic therapy plans, but I'm sure anyone involved in such would like to first know you a little better.

You can post an introduction of yourself in the newbies section here. How you found the forum, what your interests are, etc.; are good places to start. You don't have to share any personal information, and you may want to read another introduction to see how it's done. Enjoy your stay. :)

Re: Cryogenic Chamber Therapy

I'm starting to get interested in cold adapting, even though it is getting to be summer now.
I was inspired largely by the Wim Hof expose on I found via reddit (_http://www.playboy.com/playground/view/wim-hoff-endurance-mind-control) CAUTION: link is to the Playboy magazine but the article itself is SFW.

I've tried just shocking myself with ice cold showers, but I back out too quickly out of a lack of willpower. I'm wondering if it's the experience of shock that allows us to adapt to the cold to tolerate it, or is it due to some physiological adaptation that diminishes the feeling of cold? Because if it's the latter I could get that by gradually lowering the temperature I shower or bathe in...

What I do is an hour-long FIR sauna in the blanket, work up a good sweat so that getting cold really sounds like a good idea, and then I go in and sit down in half a tub of very cold water and, after five minutes, lie back in it.

Well, not ICY water. Our cold water from the well is about 13C/55F. I guess at some stage, I'll start adding ice to it to make it colder.

Anyway, try the sauna trick: get really hot and then the cold is welcome!

Re: Cryogenic Chamber Therapy

This documentary (just released) features Wim Hof first demonstrating his unique ability to withstand freezing temperature using a breathing technique, He has climbed Everest shirtless and a ran marathon barefoot through snow.

Then under lab conditions we see him injected with dead bacteria, the experiment is to see if he is capable of suppressing his immune response using his mental state only.

He takes 25 volunteers, 12 of whom accompany him to Poland to roll around in the snow, swim under ice covered water etc..

They return to Holland where they show that using his breathing techniques, they are able to play football in -15 wind chill and then have baths in ice water.

The trained group are injected with the same bacteria, and so are the control group.

The results show that the trained group are able to suppress the adrenaline inflammatory response to the dead bacteria and the control group suffer fevers.

The doctors state that this shows you can suppress the autonomous nervous system with the power of the mind. However can't comment whether this would help chronic inflammation issues. such as arthritis. But they are amazed.

Wim Hof claims he has found a way to 'activate' a certain response in the body and that it requires this breathing and visualization technique.

I would just add, does Wim Hof smoke? He has a light cough which makes me wonder, i understand the dutch are a bit more tolerant with smoking.

I have never attempted such feats but i did spend a large part of my youth half naked in the freezing cold in the UK :P(and didn't get sick), I've jumped into a freezing river and the 'dip' pools at open air baths, but not routinely. And what's funny is now i'm older and don't leave the house half naked or waiting for busses in the rain, my tolerance is nil. I actually would be quite up for the activities in the video, and if it was feesable, i would be happy to make a weekly effort at home. I do wonder whether the group
adventure will have had more of an impact, and so is more effective, at training the group. It was commented by the researchers that he worked them hard and they really bonded, and from experience in these 'adventure hollidays', this counts towards alot.

13 minutes long

Wim Hof climbed Everest bare-chested and ran a half-marathon in Lapland without any shoes. So just how does he do it? This bizarre report reveals the science behind 'The Iceman'.

The wind-chill temperature is -15 degrees Celcius, and Wim Hof is playing football. Topless. Though this is doubtless one of his favourite pastimes, on this occasion 'The Iceman' is participating in a medical study by Radboud University in the Netherlands, training a group of spritely young volunteers to acquire his superhuman hardiness. "You're learning to train your mind so that you're in control" explains one apprentice as he dries off after an ice-bath in a car park. "It's a powerful feeling." But the benefits of Wim's meditation techniques turn out to be much more significant than simply not needing a coat. Could they transform our approach to dealing with disease?

For more info, but it's in Dutch.

I do a similar thing -- I jump in right after yoga.
I started putting my shower on 1/4 hot, then moved it to 1/8 hot, then gradually down over 3 minutes, then I spend 3 minutes in a shower with the heat on zero and the stream being purely cold. It's such a vagal rush. I've actually ended up putting my phone's music speakers on full blast while I belt out in there! Giggling and shaking myself off feels great while I do it as well.

Re: Cryogenic Chamber Therapy

I saw this on ebay for $80.00 for those of you that don`t have a bathtub, but would like to do an ice or cold bath/plunge. It`s an inflatable, portable bathtub. It probably wouldn`t take near as much water as a regular bathtub. Also comes in blue. :D

Domi, it looks like the one you posted would be a lot more comfortable, but how comfortable can you get in ice cold water? BRRR!

I LOVE how they've fuzzed out the faces of the 'models' for the bathtub

- have to say though, it's a good idea!! (i'd never really thought of it). With the summer being unseasonably warm at times, for England anyway, people were cleaning out their bins and filling them with water and just chilling out in them.

And i prefer the pink blow up bath. Just looks like more can go wrong ;)

Re: Cryogenic Chamber Therapy

Okay, so that was the coldest shower I have EVER had! The only question I have is, who the hell came up with this bright idea anyway??!!

I figure I'd start with just the shower for the first couple of times so I can get a bit used to it before I go diving into the bathtub. That way I could get out of the water once in a while if I really needed to, but I pretty much stayed in it the whole time, even though it was as cold as I could get it. I can't say that I actually got used to the temperature, but after about ten minutes I started laughing. It was exhilarating!!

I'll have to get myself an appropriate thermometer so I can see what the actual temperature is, but judging from the excessive shrinkage of my genitals, and their seeming desire to recede up inside of me, I think I might have come close to achieving the optimal temperature. For now I will use that as my measuring stick.

So the thermometer showed up within 24 hours. That's got to be a record, even if it was shipped from only 2 1/2 hours down the highway.

Unfortunately, it is telling me that the lowest temperature my shower reaches is 22C. I can't imagine that is cold enough for what I am trying to achieve. I also can't imagine what it's going to feel like when I figure out how to get my water down to 15C…or colder! Brrrrrrr.

An ice bath? What do I do, go down to the gas station and buy ice every day for two weeks, and then 4 days a week after that? And if my wife and kids start doing it too? Buy an ice maker?

I'll figure something out.

So far, our thermometer tells us that the water is around 20 today and since the weather is very hot for this time of the year, it should be warmer tomorrow.

However, don't get discouraged mocachapeau, in a couple of weeks, the weather will become colder and pretty soon it will drop below 15C.

So in the meantime, get ready and practise with that temperature and it would be easier for all of you in November, December....

I had thought of that, actually. I had also realized that when winter arrives, or even late autumn, it will be cold enough to stand out on the back balcony in a pair of shorts for 20 minutes.

But I have also been wondering how soon an ebola outbreak could reach us, with possible cases in Montreal having already been announced. I would like everyone to be somewhat protected as soon as possible.

But I'm not actually worried about it, I'm just asking questions and thinking of solutions. And as it has been said numerous times, it's the actual "doing" that counts, and I've been "doing" a little bit more every day, recently.

And thus, it is time for my shower!
