Documentaries on psychopathy

The Living Force
I found a quite interesting video on psychopathy. It contains for example a interview with Robert Hare.
Its BBC produced and from early 90´s judging from the editing and overall feel.
I'm sure some of you are way ahead of this video in terms of knowledge about psychopathy but i´ll post it anyway.

"According to popular wisdom, psychopaths are crazed and bloodthirsty serial killers. The reality is not so simple. While many psychopaths do commit violent crimes, not all psychopaths are criminals and not all criminals are psychopathic. Psychopaths are found in many walks of life and are often successful in competitive professions. However they are also ruthless, manipulative and destructive. Equinox reports on techniques developed by psychologists to work out whether a person is psychopathic and shows how brain scientists are coming close to mapping the malfunctions in the brain that cause a person to be a psychopath."

I think its accurate enough to be posted here.

~50min video about psychopathy by the BBC

Useful introduction to psychopathy. The documentary seems to have been made in 2000. Back then they were sure that one is born a psychopath.
Interesting that any kind of conventional therapy actually increases psychopathy! Based on brainresearch one scientist seemed fairly confident that
they could be "cured" in about a decade (next two years!?) by inserting microchips (!!) into their brains. I don`t know about other countries, but
based on this film UK Law forbids to diagnose children/juveniles with psychopathy!

Yes, I saw that BBC documentary when it aired in Australia around 2000. It was certainly interesting, and it appeared to be the first programme that shows that empirical testing can in fact be done to show whether or not a person lacks a conscience. An employer could theoretically determine whether their employees are psychopaths or not, but since most companies are all about competitiveness, they would no doubt be more inclined to hire those ruthless psychopaths before the normal people!

Re: documentary on psychopathy

Hey Chachazoom,

Would you please give a few details or your own brief impressions of the vids? Are they worth watching? Any bias...or angle that matches or distracts from what SOTT members are familiar with in regards to psychopathy?

Re: documentary on psychopathy

It was okay, for a TV-documentary. Robert Hare and Paul Babiak were among those interviewed. Nothing new though... definitely all that was in it has been covered at great length here before.

The documentary devoted some time to explore the business world aspect of the psychopathy, but in a rather speculative manner, or so it seemed to me. An example was given by Paul Babiak though. The obvious fact that a politician can also be a psychopath was also mentioned in passing.

The question of can a psychopath be rehabilitated was discussed for some length, and there were different views posited. One researcher towards the end of the program posed a subtly intriguing moral dilemma: if we can develop brainchip technology, should we utilize it to control psychopaths? In the light of the motives of those who've been developing those and similar technologies, we can pretty safely assume that they aren't going to be put into that use. Interesting however that the issue was raised in a TV-documentary.

Anyway, just my brief impressions.

Re: documentary on psychopathy

Thanks for the summary. For those familiar with psychopathy there's probably nothing really new but for me, no matter how much I read or watch on this topic I always learn something new. The whole rehabilitation thing gives me the willies. Not only doesn't it work, but it teaches psychopaths new tools in trickery.

And that is exactly why it is so important to continue to spread information about psychopathy - and why documentaries that even broach the subject accurately are beneficial - those that delve into the details accurately are invaluable.

Exactly.

Ah yes, the good ol' Equinox - Psychopath. It is very informative and goes into aspects of brain science. It would be interesting to see what others have to say about it.

The full version has been available on Google Video for a few years now.

Video Introduction said:
Channel 4 - 7th December 2000.

According to popular wisdom, psychopaths are crazed and bloodthirsty serial killers. The reality is not so simple.

While many psychopaths do commit violent crimes, not all psychopaths are criminals and not all criminals are psychopathic. Psychopaths are found in many walks of life and are often successful in competitive professions. However they are also ruthless, manipulative and destructive.

Equinox reports on techniques developed by psychologists to work out whether a person is psychopathic and shows how brain scientists are coming close to mapping the malfunctions in the brain that cause a person to be a psychopath.

In Britain one person in 200 is likely to be a psychopath. However psychopaths are thought to be responsible for half of all reported crimes and to make up between 15% and 20% of the prison population.

The programme looks at the most recent research into the brains and behaviour of psychopaths and assesses the prospects for the treatment or containment of this antisocial group of people who create such a disproportionate amount of destruction.

Psychopaths who have been convicted of appalling crimes explain with disturbing clarity what motivated them in their violent and destructive behaviour. They speak without shame, guilt, remorse or empathy with their victims.

Though they are articulate and, at times, plausible and charming, they lack the range of emotions experienced by the rest of society. They know the difference between right and wrong but they do not feel it.

Robert Hare, Professor of Psychology at the University of Vancouver, has devised a system of assessment called the Psychopathy Checklist. In specialised interviews, psychologists assess individuals on a scale of 0 to 40 for a series of character traits, including callousness, superficial charm, lack of empathy and many others (for more detail look at How to recognise a psychopath).

Anyone whose score is greater than 26 is diagnosed as psychopathic.

Re: documentary on psychopathy

Some of it was very very very interesting! There's even a clip of Vaknin trying to spit out his usual word salad and becoming irritated and confused by his own words!

For anyone who's ever dealt with a narcissist or psychopath - some parts of this whole documentary can be chilling yet interesting.
