E-cigarettes: research - experiments - ideas

That's another curious thing: when we started vaping, we coughed very little - only if we took deep puffs.

For others, I've noticed they cough a lot no matter what.

Is that because we had reduced smoking a lot already, or because it was the PG, or because it varies by person?

Time for an update on the coughing.

I'm sure it varies from person to person and perhaps there's something to reducing smoking beforehand because my husband doesn't smoke regularly and he doesn't cough as much as I (still) do, and I'm kind of a medium-heavy smoker.

I changed coils and liquid today and had a much better experience. I'm using a 6mg/ml nicotine natural tobacco 70vg/30pg liquid now with a 1.2 coil at 12-13 watts and that seems to be a good setting for me, at least with this liquid. According to what I understand, that's considered Mouth-to-Lung so perhaps that vaping style is better for me. No coughing, yay! 😊

Haven't bought a vape to try yet, but was curious about MTL as that is my normal habit of smoking if I'm understanding it correctly. In any case, there are two different ways of doing MTL. The first is to draw a puff of smoke into the mouth, take the cigarette away and then inhale through the mouth. The second is to draw a puff of smoke into the mouth, take the cigarette away, close the mouth and inhale through the nose. The inhalation through the nose draws a smaller and more even amount of smoke into the lungs. Also, the smoke can be held in the mouth for a number of inhalations. I find the second method easier on my throat so long as I haven't drawn too big of a puff into my mouth. I use the first method if I'm busy doing other things, but the second method if I'm just enjoying a smoke and am concentrating on that alone. Thought I'd share that in case it helps someone.

What are people thoughts on being a “hybrid” smoker.

The biggest reason I want to give the vaping a go, is because tobacco here in aus is ridiculously expensive.
$80 Aus dollars for 25grams of organic non additive tobacco, which I have been smoking for years, but recently I have found an online place that sells tobacco much cheaper $70 for 100g .. the catch is we don’t know where it comes from or what’s in it, it tastes ok but I would prefer to smoke orgainc, but it’s just too expensive.

So, my intent, is maybe once they change the laws and I don’t need a doctors certificate to buy vapes,(October) I can use that as my most of the day nicotine source, and then have a few cigarettes as well, for all the benefits they have, which has been talked about in the smoking is good thread.

We were talking about this on the Aus meetup chat the other night and @nicklebleu was talking about the fact that smoking tobacco has additional benefits which are not just nicotine based. There is a receptor he was talking about that acts as an antidepressant, sorry I can’t remember what is is called, amongst other things.

So if the vape thing works for me, maybe I can go back to the expensive to organic tobacco because it will last much longer.

Can't you find some people in Aus with gardening skills? Or become a gardener yourself? It can be a very rewarding occupation. And most of the time you just relax...

Haha I would love to, but!

The Legal Status of Growing Tobacco in Australia

Growing tobacco for personal use is not explicitly illegal in Australia. However, there are significant limitations and stringent conditions that one must adhere to if they wish to grow tobacco legally. It is essential to recognise that the laws and regulations surrounding tobacco cultivation may vary between states and territories, and it is crucial to stay informed about any changes in the legislation.

Personal Use vs. Commercial Cultivation

The legality of growing tobacco depends heavily on the purpose of cultivation – whether it is for personal use or commercial purposes. Growing tobacco on a small scale for personal consumption may be allowed. However, selling or distributing the tobacco products would likely be considered illegal without proper licenses and permits.

Basically, it's extremely expensive and time consuming to acquire permits and then you have to prove you're not selling it etc etc plus you need somewhere to grow it and n top of all that it's very difficult to get hold of tobacco seeds.

I ordered this vape from a native smokes site, mostly because I wanted to try a stronger one, so I could vape less.

I think it is quite a bit cheaper when you factor in the higher nic count. OVNS-Meta-Moon-2500-Vape.jpg

Will see how it goes. Hopefully they don't knock me on my ass... :-D 🚬

I got some supplies and tried to go for "pure" one, but no success yet to get vape first. I am not there yet for "coughing"

I have two units one XROS4 another Luxe XR Max

XROS 4 with .6 ohms coil: I used Saltnic Labs Dry Tobacco ( 50mg/ML nicotine - Not sure 50/50 PG/VG or 70/30 VG/PG though shop guy said 50/50) . Atleast I can do MTL , gets puff, but little guilty and neurotic of putting PG into body. As of now, i am doing hybrid smoking with organic American spirit cigarettes.
  • I went to shop where I got XROS4 and complained about leakage, he gave me 1.2 ohm coil free and asked me to try it. But has not tried yet.

Luxe XR Max : It came with
  • 2 pods ( RDL ( Restricted Directed to Lungs - considered in between MTL( Mouth to Lungs) and DTL ) , DTL ( direct to Lungs) )
  • 2 coils .2 Ohms and .4 Ohms
Home made supplies: I got this Liquid Nicotine with VG base of 100 mg/ML nicotine. I tried the following with No success of producing Vape. I tried to replicate Scottie's result - vape of 50/50 VG/distilled water combination at any Wattage ( if not 30W). No Luck with it.
I know they rolled back on this pure VG/Distilled water 50/50 use case due to coughing, I want check my luck any way.

I made 50mg/ML nicotine with distilled water from Liquid nicotine and tried at .2 Ohms in DTL / .4 ohm RDL at different Wattage with no luck.

I suspect there is some thing wrong with the way I experimented as I was not getting proper vape or getting small negligible vape at 60 Watts .4 Ohms on RDL pod on Luxe XR Max

Assumption? : Vendor website says Liquid Nictoine with VG base at 100mg/ML nictoine. Does it mean it is 100% VG already there or do I need to add VG separately?. Any suggestions?

I was thinking of make one more order with DIY kit to experiment little more.

When I ask VG/PG content at the local shops, literally NO body knows. They either check internet (or act like searching on internet) and say 70/30 or 50/50. It looks we on this forum are the GEEKS of Vaping. :cool2:

from the session -

Q: (Chu/Keyhole) This is from the Session from 14 January 2023: "(whitecoast) What is the overall toxicological and carcinogenic burden of additive-free nicotine vaporizers versus organically sourced additive-free tobacco? A: Slightly less." Okay, so the follow-up question is, what is the least toxic type of e-liquid composition for vaping?

A: Distilled water.

If the the overall toxicological and carcinogenic burden of additive-free nicotine vaporizers is "slightly less" than smoking tobacco, then maybe we should be asking, does vaping have the same benefits as smoking tobacco?

As a general rule, a 50/50 VG/water mix should produce vapour on any device. If not it is a hardware problem. I had this once with a subohm coil (0.8 ohm) that wouldn't produce any vapour at all, just hot humid air. Not sure if there is any remedy for this.

What happens again and again in the vaping industry is that producers continue to sell products with design failures or problems in serial production until the next generation comes up.

It is 100% VG with nicotine. You can dilute it to your liking.

Was speaking with a new work mate who vapes. He is aware of the methods of using tobacco to make vape juice, but opted for using a disposable vape that contained nicotine. He warned about using gloves if making your own vape juice because he's had mates get nicotine poisoning when handling the wet tobacco - it absorbed through their skin.

He gave me a puff on his and in comparison to how I smoke tobacco, I think I took too big of a puff. I was expecting to have to draw harder. Other than that I found it mostly satisfying, though the one he had was peach flavoured and I don't think I would like that long term. However, I think there's some utility in having a vape juice that doesn't have a tobacco smell or flavour if vaping around non-smokers, or if a need arises to hide the fact that the juice contains nicotine. That doesn't necessarily mean that the juice has to have a flavour.

I'd be happy to have a disposable as a back up based on the above experience. He said that the one that he uses gives 6000 puffs and lasts him about a week and costs him $20. He also dismantled the one that he had and showed that it could be refilled if needed, but I didn't have enough knowledge on board to know if that it would fit inside the parameters that have been outlined here.

After your suggestion, I used 1.2 Ohm on XROS 4 and it started to work, but I forgot combination as I ended up putting water. Once that 3ml is over, I couldn't figure out what that nicotine % is. What ever I tried, it ended up leaking.

I finally got around to sit down to do "chemistry" experiment to figure out how to use 100%VG + 50% distilled water.

I did spent few hours to try under what circumstances I can make Vaporesso Luxe XR Max. I happens variable are too many - Ohms, concentration of nicotine, wattage , type of Pod and so on. the combination that worked on Vaporesso Luxe XR Max is
- RDL (restricted directed to Lung), 12 mg/ML ( 100%VG + distilled water) at 70 to 80W
- RDL (restricted directed to Lung), 8 mg/ML at 25 to 40 W

I am not sure why XROS4 with 1.2 ohm pod which worked suddenly started leaking. I have a impression from the experiment that , lower than 15 mg/ML ( 100%VG+ Distilled Water) , XROS4 cartridges' are completely leaking. So concentration and viscosity seems to have some contribution to the leakage. The same pods doesn't leak with commercial liquids that are 70/30 or 50/50 PG/Vg combinations though.

What I find it curious in the commercial shops here in US, is MOST of the juices are Nicotine extracted from Non-Tobacco fuits/vegetables erc. . I was wondering about the difference.

One end 4D STS doesn't want smoking people for their "container" purposes, but business is promoting crazily these vapes and most of them are non-Tobacco Nicotine. I am not sure what is going on there.

any way, I was able to reduce my organic tobacco cigarettes significantly. I will order my next batch of PG, nicotine salts , menthol etc. and see which works. I should also get 10mg/ML instead of my current 100mg/ML which takes lot of diluting. It is difficult to say, proper mixing happening or not with little stirring. I have a feeling that it may be contributing to the leakage on XROS4 pod's

I guess it's time for an update.

After puffing 70/30 Silver Blend (commercial) at 6mg/mL in the Luxe XR, we heard about the Farmies love for the XROS 3 because it's a gentler, smoother puff.

So, for the past week or so, we've been using an XROS 3, 0.6ohm pod/coil, with Liquidarom Les Essentiels: Silver 50/50 - also at 6mg/mL. It has been the smoothest, least harsh, and generally awesome vaping experience. No throat irritation, no lung congestion - just happily puffing away.

I did a little experiment with 100% VG, and personally, I found that I could take 2-3 big puffs from the Luxe XR and I would instantly switch to a puff from the XROS 3 with 50/50 because I felt like the first puffs of 100% VG didn't give me any nicotine hit at all!

I have read that in vape liquids, it's the PG that carries flavor & nicotine the most. I was unable to find any kind of breakdown as to how much more effective PG is at carrying nicotine vs. VG.

I also did some testing, and it appears that many commercial blends like our "Essential Silver 50/50" are quite acidic when measured with pH strips: around 5. This is a "blonde ciggy" flavored liquid. Once you mix in the nicotine shoots (very alkaline, like 8), you end up with 50/50 at 6mg and the pH of the final nicotinized liquid is 6.25-6.5.

Since it's impossible to get ingredients lists for any vape liquids around here, I theorize that commercial producers add... something... to their liquids to make them easier to puff. Whether that's just pH-related or something else, I dunno. But for Chu and I, the commercial ones are WAAAY smoother and less harsh than DIY blends.

Chu finds the smaller, lower-powered XROS 3 to be gentler (with the same 50/50 liquid) than the larger, more powerful Luxe XR - even when she turns down the power on the Luxe! Go figure. I find them equally smooth, but I prefer the XROS 3 because it's smaller and lighter.

So the next question is: What is The Mystery Ingredient that could make DIY blends smoother and gentler?? Not sure how I'm going to figure that out, but the quest continues...
